On behalf of Art Miami LLC, welcome to Aqua Art Miami 2013, our first edition since joining our family of fairs. Since 2005, Aqua has been established as one of the top fairs during Miami Art Week, recognized for presenting vibrant and noteworthy international art programs with a particular emphasis in supporting young and established galleries with strong emerging and early-to-midcareer artists. This exciting year marks the beginning of a new chapter for Aqua as we integrate this mission with the expanded amenities and infrastructure that are the signatures of Art Miami and CONTEXT. The result is an exciting mix of established galleries and young exhibitors fresh to the Miami fair scene, shown amongst an engaging and immersive environment lasting throughout the week. In addition to Aqua, we hope to also welcome you to Art Miami and CONTEXT, courtesy of the continuous shuttle service between Aqua, Art Basel Miami Beach at the Convention Center, and Art Miami and CONTEXT in Wynwood’s Arts District. A very special thanks to our sponsors and partners, the returning galleries who have contributed to Aqua’s success over the years, and the new exhibitors who have joined us from throughout North and South America, Europe and Asia. Most importantly, we would like to thank you, our patrons. Whether you are a loyal collector or new visitor, we hope you will enjoy the galleries, special programs, installations and events at Aqua Art Miami 2013, and look forward to seeing you frequently throughout the week! AQUA VIDEO LOUNGE MINI MONKEY TOWN Curated and produced by Montgomery Knott Mini Monkey Town at Aqua Art Miami will immerse fairgoers in a unique encounter with cutting-edge video art. The New York City-based Monkey Town has staged underground cinematic experiences and provided a platform for filmmakers, video artists, musicians, performers and culinary artists since 2003. In its popup for Aqua, Monkey Town is scaling down its 25-foot four-screen cube to suit an intimate video installation, featuring the work of Theo Angell, Shana Moulton, Jeremy Couillard and Will Rahilly.

SOLO PROJECTS GARY BASEMAN Presented by Shulamit Gallery, Los Angeles | Room 125 Gary Baseman’s installation at Aqua, titled Mythical Homeland, is an extension of the artist’s personal narrative and ongoing exploration of his heritage. The unique environment dominated by birch trees pays homage to his father’s survival during WWII by hiding in forests on the outskirts of Poland, as Baseman’s new body of work exposes the myths of history and place among shifting geopolitical perspectives. Hung from the life-sized trees and surrounding walls are paintings, drawings and photographs of Baseman’s signature playful creatures and ‘Wild Girls’ in fantastical, allegorical compositions imbued with a dark humor and loaded meaning. Baseman crosses artistic lines as a painter, illustrator, video and performance artist, animator, TV/ movie producer, curator and toy designer. His fine art has been displayed in galleries and museums in Brazil, Germany, Israel, Italy, Russia and all over the U.S. Baseman’s critically acclaimed retrospective “The Door Is Always Open” ran through August 2013 at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles. Baseman will be present for a book signing at Aqua Art Miami on Friday, December 6, at 1 PM. KEVIN BERLIN Presented by Mark Miller Gallery, New York | Room 205 Kevin Berlin’s solo project at Aqua, UNCENSORED, features interpretive paintings of cigarette packs with irreverent warning labels expressed in English, Italian and Russian languages. A satirical mirror of controversial economic, social and political situations of the day, they reflect his stance as a “witness” to global popular culture and communicate what people are thinking about but are afraid to say. He will also invite fairgoers to express themselves in the collaborative creation of a new video work onsite. Kevin Berlin’s works are in prestigious corporate and private collections including Kim Basinger, Luciano Pavarotti and Bill and Hillary Clinton. Berlin currently lives and works in Southampton, New York and Florence, Italy. His recent solo exhibitions include shows in Shanghai, Kiev, Chicago, and New York City. 6 | aqua

SOLO PROJECTS MARI KIM Presented by EJMQ, Seoul | Room 220 Mari Kim incorporates bright colors and bold lines to create simplified and idealized figures with oversized eyes. Mostly young women, fairy tale characters or other popular icons, these “eyedolls” inspired her first book in 2008 and exhibitions in Seoul in 2009 and 2011. Originally trained as an animator in Australia, Kim’s acclaimed short film Religulous was featured at various international festivals in 2007. A leading graphic voice within Korea’s K-pop cult phenomenon, she is known for her collaborations with the famous K-pop group 2NE1 on visuals for their albums, videos and commercial goods. While Kim has exhibited widely within her native South Korea and internationally, this presentation by EJMQ at Aqua Art Miami marks her premiere solo exhibition in the U.S.

SPECIAL EXHIBITIONS Furthering Aqua Art Miami’s mission to support the development of new work and ideas, exhibitions featuring emerging artists and promising graduates will introduce art enthusiasts to fresh voices, while accomplished artists’ collaborations with student printmakers will inspire visitors with experiments in form. ISLAND PRESS | Room 221 Island Press is a research-based printmaking workshop at Washington University in St. Louis that is committed to creating and publishing innovative prints and multiples, educating students and the broader community about print media, and advancing the printmaking field. Their exhibition at Aqua Art Miami offers collectors the results of intensive printmaking residencies by prominent visiting artists including James Siena, Trenton Doyle Hancock, Nina Katchadourian, Radcliffe Bailey and Ann Hamilton. ERNEST G. WELCH SCHOOL OF ART & DESIGN AT GEORGIA STATE UNIVERSITY | Room112 In a new series spotlighting a different institution of higher education each year, Aqua welcomes the Ernest G. Welch School of Art & Design at Georgia State University, which has curated an exhibition of recent graduates from its competitive MFA program who are working in a variety of media. ARTSLANT | Room 124 The online network and magazine ArtSlant presents the results of its yearlong contest leading up to a special exhibition at Aqua Art Miami. The open call to artists worldwide was juried by a panel of international art luminaries who selected several finalists for this annual opportunity to gain invaluable exposure during Art Week. The ultimate winner of the 2013 ArtSlant Prize – whose artwork will be purchased for the ArtSlant Emerging Collection – will be unveiled at a private party ArtSlant is hosting on Saturday, December 7, from 9 PM to midnight.

DECEMBER 3-8 | 2013 VIP PREVIEW | DECEMBER 3 CONTEXT is the sister fair to Art Miami dedicated to the development and reinforcement of emerging and mid-career artists. CONTEXT’s open atmosphere creates a meaningful dialogue between artists, galleries and collectors while providing the ultimate platform for established and emerging galleries to present cutting-edge and emergent talent. Its second edition will feature 70 international galleries, vetted by the CONTEXT Selection Committee, as well as symposia, solo artist exhibitions and curated projects. ART VIDEO LOUNGE Since 2008, Miami’s anchor fair has put a strong focus on video art and new artistic technologies with its state-of-the-art video lounge. With the 2012 debut of CONTEXT, this annual program was given a new home in keeping with the younger venue’s emphasis on cutting-edge contemporary and emerging art. For the 2013 Art Video Lounge, La Rete Art Projects has invited the Video-Forum of Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (n.b.k.), the oldest collection of video art in Germany now in its 42nd year, to present works from its archive of more than 1,600 videos spanning the history of the medium. A special program the Video-Forum has curated exclusively for CONTEXT features Hartmut Bitomsky, Anetta Mona Chişa & Lucia Tkáčová, Hito Steyerl and Amir Yatziv. Recognizing the origins of video technology within the military, this exhibition stimulates a timely dialogue with a critical examination of the complex military technology, ideology and politics of imagery. ZOOM IN The special exhibition ZOOM IN provides a select few galleries with a platform to screen video works by artists that curators Julia Draganović, Elena Forin and Claudia Löffelholz of LaRete Art Projects believe to be of notable significance. In a new format, these viewing booths line the covered walkway that connects the CONTEXT and Art Miami pavilions in the courtyard closed to traffic and transformed into a gathering space with a café, lounge and solo artist projects. CONTEXT has partnered with One Art Nation to feature daily symposia presented by leading art experts. Seminars focus on various art specialties including art history, market trends, advisory services, appraisals, insurance, shipping, storage, design, lighting and security. These educational programs are all free for VIP cardholders in the CONTEXT VIP Lounge. ART FROM BERLIN Returning to CONTEXT after its first appearance at Miami Art Week last year, ART FROM BERLIN offers insight into Berlin’s influential art scene with six emerging and established contemporary galleries selected by a panel of curators and art critics. ART FROM BERLIN is presented at CONTEXT by the Galleries Association of Berlin (lvbg), with official support from the municipality of Berlin and the European Union (EU). The 2013 BERLIN LOUNGE is curated by Haus am Lützowplatz (HaL), Berlin’s oldest existing Kunstverein (non-profit art association). Founded in 1960 during the cold war period, HaL continues to produce exhibitions and panel discussions that bridge aesthetics with political and social realities.
