Artworks to be presented at Brafa 2020

Preface

by Harold t’Kint de Roodenbeke Chairman of BRAFA ART FAIR

BRAFA: MARVELLOUS DISCOVERIES GUARANTEED A fair’s standard depends primarily on the quality of its exhibitors. In this respect, Brafa 2020 will once more keep its place in the small circle of leading international art fairs. This year, Brafa will again reunite 133 of the highest-ranking galleries specialising in ancient, modern and contemporary art and design. The figures underline exhibitor fidelity while reflecting the inclusion of prestigious new names who have made their mark in the fields of classical archaeology, old master paintings, furniture and art objects. Faithful to its credo of eclecticism, quality and the representation of diverse specialities, the fair’s rhythm will only alter by shortening by a day, taking place from Sunday 26 January to Sunday 2 February 2020. In line with tradition, Brafa will offer an extraordinary journey covering over 5000 years, incorporating countless historical periods, styles and continents, the whole sublimated by a touch of elegance and our unparalleled Belgian welcome! Initially a pioneering venture undertaken by a few Belgian antiques dealers in 1956, the ‘Foire des Antiquaires de Belgique’, renamed the Brafa Art Fair in 2008, evolved over time into an international fair. This change accelerated over the last 12 years, since the fair moved from the Palais des Beaux-Arts into the huge industrial warehouses of the Tour & Taxis site, the first international event to establish itself there. Currently the proportion of exhibitors is 50 Belgian exhibitors (37 %) and 83 from 16 foreign countries (63 %). At Brafa, quality and authenticity go hand in hand. Thanks to one of the strictest object admission processes in the sector, Brafa ensures it delights and satisfies the curiosity and demanding gaze of collectors and art-lovers. Each exhibited work is submitted to rigorous examination by a team of independent experts before the doors open. The experience and erudition of all those involved are invaluable for visitors intent on enlarging their knowledge of the art world. What is more, the Brafa Art Talks offer a fascinating alternative to browsing the stands, proposing an incredible range of art-related topics. 2020 also marks an important anniversary, the 65th edition of the fair, which will be celebrated in great style! An exceptional auction of five steles from the Berlin Wall will be organised with all profits going to five charitable associations. This has also been organised to commemorate the 30 years since the wall came down. Finally, in order to enrich your stay in Brussels and in Belgium, we have created this City Guide with a selective list of gourmet restaurants, new exhibitions and concerts, original boutiques and so forth. All to wish you the most wonderful stay. Enjoy your visit! 5

Segments of the Berlin Wall Š Raf Michiels

BERLIN WALL CHARITY AUCTION To celebrate its 65th anniversary, Brafa is organising a charity auction that’s all about the joy of sharing.

The 9th of November 1989 is without doubt one of those historic dates that remains etched in the memory of all those who were alive at the time. On that day, after months of growing civil unrest in the Eastern part of Germany and increasing demands for a German Perestroika a botched press conference by the ruling party of the ‘DDR’ started the end of the wall. The people from East Berlin rushed to the Berlin Wall separating the two Germanys and brought this symbol of division, suffering and painful separation peacefully down in front of cameras from around the world. The ever growing crowd and endless streams of ‘Trabbis’ rushed through ‘Checkpoint Charlie’, the Brandenburger Tor, Bornholmer Strasse and all the other new openings between the two parts of the city and quickly made a united Berlin a new reality. The parties on the vanquished wall, the impromptu concert played by Rostropovitch, complete strangers falling into each other’s arms captured the feeling in everyone’s heart that this day in November 1989 presaged a new era.

In the more recent past, Brafa’s visitors have come to look forward to encountering the fair’s guest of honour at each new edition. Belgian museums and Foundations and international artists have all brought their own particular spice to the fair. Brafa, however, decided to do something exceptional to celebrate its 65th anniversary in 2020, and has therefore organised a charity auction of five segments of the Berlin Wall.

There is an element of historical irony surrounding this wall. Once detested and a symbol of oppression, it became, as it fell, an object everyone wanted to appropriate a piece of, as if it was made of some rare and precious substance. Countless fragments of the Berlin Wall are now scattered around the world and few whole segments like those acquired by Brafa in view of this anniversary charity event remain. All profits from the sale will be split equally between cancer research, the social integration of people with disabilities and, of course, our artistic heritage.

The decision to hold this charity auction might seem surprising, but it’s in the fair’s DNA. Brafa (formerly the Foire des Antiquaires de Belgique) is exceptional in the world of art fairs for it is in fact a non-profit organisation. The internationally acclaimed event brings together professionals and collectors keen to share their passion, the benefit the fair makes going towards supporting the art market and those working in it.

The word ‘sharing’ sums up the whole operation. Let’s follow Brafa’s example and be generous!

Too Fast to Live, Too Young to Die / 20.11.2019 > 26.04.2020 This exhibition, based on a private collection from New York, explores the unique visual idiom of the punk movement from the mid-1970s to the 1980s through the icons of its graphic universe: flyers, posters, albums, etc. Immersed in professional and amateur-designed punk, the visitor will be able to explore associated fashion, contemporary visual art, archival images, videos, and a participatory ‘concert hall’ where they can DJ their own vinyl playlist.

Unveiling of the restored Maquette of Rome After a year of restoration work, the Maquette of Rome, one of the must-see masterpieces of the Art & History Museum in Brussels, has been unveiled to the public in November 2019. The Maquette, made by French architect Paul Bigot, shows Rome in the 4th century, when the city was at the height of its monumental splendour. Not only the Maquette itself was restored: interactive information and virtual reality was added to the installation to create an immersive visitor experience.

Travelling through the Middle Ages / 27.09.2019 > 29.03.2020 People migrating over long distances, new political structures, climate change, religious conflicts, shifting markets... The turbulent times of Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages between 300 and 1000 A.D. have more similarities with our modern world than we might think. In Western Europe, this period is often referred to as the ‘Dark Ages’. Numerous historical sources and artefacts prove however that many significant exchanges took place during this period, involving travel, trade, diplomacy and armed conflict. Diverse artefacts, from Merovingian jewellery to parchment manuscripts with Runes, golden coins from Byzantine Empires to Coptic textiles covered in stunning colours and motifs, reveal this exceptional time of cultural exchange.

Underexposed / Opens only on 9.11 - 23.11 - 07.12.2019 - 04.01 - 18.01 & 01.02.2020 The exhibition Women. Underexposed is an ode to the power of women and to the sheer determination of female artists. Throughout the ages, they have fought for the privilege to make their passion a reality and share it with the public. The show moves from the past when women artists had to pass themselves off as men in order to display their work, to today, when women can stand up for themselves and confidently engage in dialogue with their male counterparts. The incredible story of Belgian women artists showcases works by Marthe Donas, Jane Graverol, Lili Dujourie, Liliane Vertessen, Marie-Jo Lafontaine, Ann Veronica Janssens and Berlinde De Bruyckere (among others) alongside pieces by their contemporaries: René Magritte, Paul Delvaux, Pieter Paul Rubens, Luc Tuymans, Michael Borremans, Philippe Van Snick and Jan Vercruysse.

Through enormous drawings and paintings, videos, collages, posters, painted objects and murals, you get a glimpse of the artist’s short and powerful career in the vibrant New York art scene of the early 1980s. Haring was involved in the fight against drugs, aids, apartheid and the nuclear arms race. His main ambition was to make ‘public art’ that he distributed through his Pop Shop boutique and the channels of mass media, in collaboration with Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat.

Two surrealist icons in dialogue / 11.10.2019 > 09.02.2020 For the first time ever, this show highlights the connections and influences linking the two greatest icons of the surrealist movement. In the spring of 1929, Salvador Dalí and René Magritte meet in Paris, surrounded by the great names of the artistic avantgarde. In August of the same year, at Dalí’s invitation, Magritte travels to Cadaqués, the Spanish painter’s home. This ‘surrealist summer’ - which also includes visits by Éluard, Miró and Buñuel - proves decisive. Dalí and Magritte both aim to challenge reality, question our gaze and shake up our certainties. The Catalan and the Belgian show a fascinating proximity, despite their very different creations and personalities. The exhibition reveals the personal, philosophical and aesthetic links between the two iconic artists through more than 80 paintings, sculptures, photographs, drawings, films and archival objects.

But it is thanks to collectors that we are able to enjoy these outstanding works today. This exhibition invites you to step into the world of the art-connoisseurs Fritz and Florent and discover their relentless quest for beauty. Florent van Ertborn (1784–1840) and Fritz Mayer van den Bergh (1858–1901) collected paintings, sculptures, manuscripts and other art objects with tireless passion. Their acquisitions were often bargains, sometimes investments and occasionally brilliant discoveries. This show sweeps you up into their collector’s world by showing some of the masterpieces they unearthed. The highlight is the recently restored Dulle Griet (‘Mad Meg’) by Pieter Bruegel the Elder. A number of masterpieces from the Royal Museum of Fine Arts (KMSKA), including Fouquet’s enigmatic Madonna will be shown at the exhibition.

For the very first time, the Snyders & Rockox House is focusing on Pieter’s son Jan’s draughtsmanship, with a display of about fifty drawings. Jan Bruegel I was proficient at developing diverse subjects, and was an inspired painter of landscapes, seascapes, still-lives, historical themes, hunting scenes and allegorical and mythological stories. Seen as the inventor of the floral still-life, he was also an important innovator in the depiction of landscapes, in which his father’s artistic legacy and his visit to Italy played no small part.

Nature Morte/Nature Vivante 24.11.2019 > 08.11.2020 In French, the expression ‘nature morte’ (literally ‘dead nature’) refers to still life painting, a genre in which natural things are often used to reflect human vanity and the ephemeral aspect of life. Nowadays, we are increasingly aware of how human activity contributes to the impermanence of nature, and even its annihilation. Yet nature has a formidable capacity for regeneration. In this exhibition designers, architects and artists present practical and experimental research that questions the relationship between man and nature, delving into fields that include ecology, science, ethics and artistic creativity. Nature Morte/Nature Vivante reveals how man’s ambiguous relationship with nature can be both perverse and inspiring.

Borman and sons ‘The Finest Image-Carver’/ 20.09.2019 > 26.01.2020 Jan Borman (1479-1520) was a medieval sculptor – the best according to some – and a shrewd businessman. His workshop in Brussels was much in demand and it was there that Borman taught his sons not only his masterful skills but also his commercial acumen. He was technically brilliant, but was above all an innovator with a large number of followers. This autumn, M is bringing together over 100 sculptures in a unique retrospective exhibition on the Borman phenomenon.

Nel Aerts / 25.10.2019 > 23.02.2020 Nel Aerts (°1987) has created a highly varied yet organic oeuvre incorporating drawings, collages, textiles, photographs, paintings and performances. The influence of artists such as Jean Brusselmans and René Magritte never seems far away.

Ceci n’est pas un corps. Hyperrealism Sculpture / 22.11.2019 > 03.05.2020 ‘Hyperrealism’ is an art movement that began in the United States in the 1970s. Shunning abstraction, the hyperrealist artist seeks to achieve a meticulous representation of nature, to the extent that observers sometimes wonder if they are in the presence of living bodies. The works are sometimes amusing, sometimes disturbing, but always meaningful. With a selection of about fifty hyperrealist sculptures by leading international artists George Segal, Ron Mueck, Maurizio Cattelan, Berlinde De Bruyckere, Duane Hanson, John De Andrea, and others - the exhibition illustrates the evolution of the human figure in the work of hyperrealist sculptors from the 1970s to the present day. The selection high-lights key issues in this approach to figurative realism and shows how our perception of the human body continuously evolves.

Bye Bye Future! The art of time travelling / 25.01.2020 > 24.05.2020 What does the future hold? This burning question has been taken up by artists of all times. Through literature, films, artworks and even pop culture, creators of today travel in time to play with the future and explore their ideas about tomorrow. In doing so, they reflect our society today; our technological evolutions, our fears of apocalypse, our hopes and dreams. This exhibition presents unexpected associations of ideas and art forms. Visitors are invited to explore unexpected connections between More and Grandizer, Verne and Miyazaki, Nostradamus and Truffaut, fairy tales and Schuiten’s interpretations of utopia, and much, much more.

Le triangle d’or / 14.05.2019 > 10.05.2020 We are in the 18th century, in the studio and shop of a Master silversmith in the heart of the city. To whom will he deliver his next piece of work? The court abbot? The château owners? The lady spy? With whom does he have a quiet word? The successful writer? The freemason? How does he keep in touch with popular mood? Through the apprentice plasterer or at the tavern? Become a spectator of the lives of fourteen characters from a range of backgrounds. Experience fourteen encounters in different settings of the period. Each character in the exhibition will tell you his or her story through the objects, paintings, decorative items and books on display. Each one represents the thinking of the time, and the Master silversmith is at the centre of these encounters.

AFRICAN ART AT THE VAN BUUREN MUSEUM Van Buuren Museum and Gardens, 41 Avenue Léo Errera in 1180 Brussels

19.01.20 - 01.03.20

It is on the initiative of Isabelle Anspach, curator of the Van Buuren Museum, that this emblematic home of Art Deco will host its very first exhibition of African art. Didier Claes, president of Bruneaf, vice-president of Brafa and curator of the exhibition, presents us with a remarkable and expertly chosen selection of major African works of art so in tune with the soul of the museum that they create an expressive connection that is nothing short of stunning.

The beauty and astounding quality of the masks and sculptures on display all come from two Belgian collections. Fruit of a common passion, this introductory journey offers us a perspective on the adventures of two sets of friends on a quest to discover an ancestral world that is as rich as it is complex. Opening hours: Afternoons from 14:00 to 17:00. Closed on Tuesdays Exhibition entrance fee: €10 (Adults) €8 (Senior citizens), €7 (Groups of 10 or more), €5 (Students), free (Children under the age of 12) Guided tours (by appointment): 60 € en semaine 80 € le week-end Contact: Isabelle Anspach, conservatrice Tel.(Monday-Friday, 09:00-13:00): +32 2 343 48 51 Email address: info@museumvanbuuren.be Mobile Isabelle Anspach: +32 475 62 49 62
