Fair Information

Letter from Director On behalf of the ownership team of Art Miami LLC, I would like to welcome you to the 24th edition of Art Miami – the City of Miami’s premier international contemporary and modern art fair – and the second edition of its sister fair CONTEXT, featuring the most prominent emerging and cutting-edge galleries from around the globe. This comprehensive pairing offers you the unparalleled opportunity to enhance or develop your collection from our select group of participating international galleries. The combination of 125 exhibitors at Art Miami and 69 at CONTEXT has transformed Midtown Miami in the Wynwood Arts District into a compact art metropolis representing more than 50 cities in 22 countries, covering 250,000 square feet of curated indoor and outdoor exhibition space. Enjoy interacting with our galleries as they are extremely knowledgeable in developing important collections and take tremendous pride in assisting you in learning about the latest movements and advancements of the modern and contemporary art world. Art Miami and CONTEXT are honored to contribute to our city’s continuing cultural metamorphosis with our support of the Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) as the beneficiary of our exclusive VIP Preview on Tuesday, Dec. 3. The VIP Previews of all our fairs are can’t-miss opportunities to be the first to view and purchase the finest works of modern and contemporary art before the doors open to the public the following day. This world-class institution, formerly known as Miami Art Museum (MAM), is now unveiling the latest art facility designed by the award-winning architects Herzog & de Meuron that is reinvigorating the downtown waterfront. We encourage you to visit the innovative facilities and exhibitions at PAMM, who is offering our VIPs complimentary admission throughout the week as well as access to its much anticipated grand opening celebration, PAMM’s Big Jam on Thursday, Dec. 5. As the opening of Art Miami is the traditional kickoff to Art Week on Tuesday evenings, the VIP Preview of Aqua Art Miami has become the annual Wednesday destination of influential collectors, connoisseurs and curators. Now we are pleased to introduce our first edition of Aqua Art Miami since welcoming the nine-year-old fair into the Art Miami family and invite our VIPs and accredited press to attend the opening Wednesday, Dec. 4, after the close of Art Miami and CONTEXT. We are confident that you too will find inspiration among its 46 exhibitors, including young and established galleries and interdisciplinary projects showcasing fresh work by early-to-mid-career artists at the classic Aqua Hotel in the landmark Art Deco District on South Beach. Our shuttle service will provide convenient transportation between our expansive home base in the burgeoning Wynwood Arts District and Aqua Art Miami, as well as Art Basel Miami Beach and our official luxury hotel partners: the JW Marriott Marquis Miami and Hotel Beaux Arts Miami in Downtown Miami. Our participating galleries, recognizing the stature and importance of our fairs, have saved the very best for you, our audience, to acquire. Together we have collaborated throughout the year to present distinctive exhibitions to you with a level of quality, ambience and VIP amenities that are unmatched by any other art fair located in the City of Miami. As our longtime patrons have come to expect, Art Miami adds new dimensions to the fair experience for each edition. There are many special programs this year, so please make sure you take the time to enjoy these highlights: Art Miami and CONTEXT will feature exhibitions curated by Julia Draganovic, Elena Forin and Claudia Loffelholz of LaRete Art Projects. THINK BIG, occupying the passageways linking Art Miami’s three main pavilions, exposes fairgoers to bold ideas and unconventional approaches proposed by

selected galleries. CHECK OUT installs compelling solo projects presented by participating galleries in prime positions, including the Maserati VIP Lounge at Art Miami and the entrances to the pavilions. ZOOM IN turns the courtyard we have created between the Art Miami and CONTEXT pavilions into a platform for cutting-edge video works. Five galleries have been invited to screen the latest forays of artists selected by LaRete in a series of viewing booths along the covered walkway connecting the two fairs. One of these five artists will be chosen by an independent panel of video art experts to win the inaugural ZOOM IN Award on Saturday, Dec. 7. Inside CONTEXT, the Art Video Lounge spotlights Berlin’s Video Forum of Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (NBK), the oldest collection of video art in Germany, now in its 42nd year with more than 1,300 works in its holdings. This pioneering institution strengthens the global art capital’s presence at CONTEXT with the return of ART FROM BERLIN, a cluster of six exhibitors selected by a panel of expert curators and art critics to represent a cross-section of Berlin’s diverse gallery community. ART FROM BERLIN and its Berlin Lounge are presented by the Galleries Association of Berlin (lvbg), with official support from the municipality of Berlin and the European Union (EU). We appreciate the unique perspectives that LaRete Art Projects and ART FROM BERLIN contribute to our fairs. Our VIPs can also enrich their knowledge of the field at a series of daily symposia organized by ONE ART NATION in the CONTEXT Lounge. The broad range of topics includes specialties such as art history, market trends, advisory services, appraisals, insurance, shipping, storage, design, lighting and security. The continuing collaboration of Art Miami, CONTEXT, the City of Miami, Midtown Miami and the Wynwood Arts District reinforces Miami as an international marketplace and mecca for the arts yearround. We are very grateful to all of our constituents in the area for their ongoing support and for ensuring that our guests are well received. I would like to personally thank our dedicated staff, Host Committee, sponsors, vendors, volunteers and partners who have all helped to spread the news and create the success of Art Miami, CONTEXT and Aqua Art Miami. We especially thank London-based Christie’s International Real Estate for joining us again as the Official Luxury Real Estate Partner for Art Miami and CONTEXT; Maserati North America, the Official Luxury Automobile and VIP Lounge Host; Canon, the Imaging Partner of CONTEXT and the JW Marriott Marquis Miami and Hotel Beaux Arts Miami, the Official Luxury Hotels of Art Miami. On your way into the Art Miami and CONTEXT pavilions and while relaxing at the courtyard lounge and café, pause to admire Maserati’s latest models as well as the special Canon booth in the CONTEXT pavilion. Thank you for attending. I hope that you enjoy Art Miami, CONTEXT and Aqua Art Miami. We wish you all a festive holiday season and Happy New Year and look forward to seeing you back at our pavilion for the third edition of Art Wynwood scheduled for Presidents Day Weekend, Feb. 13 through 17, 2014. Sincerely,

2013 Art Video Program

CURATED BY LARETE ART PROJECTS: Julia Draganović, Elena Forin and Claudia Löffelholz

ART VIDEO LOUNGE Regular visitors of Art Miami know that since 2008, Miami’s anchor fair has put a strong focus on video art and new artistic technologies, presenting each year a curated stateof-the-art video lounge. With the 2012 debut of Art Miami’s sister fair, CONTEXT, this exhibition of video and new media was given a new home in keeping with the younger venue’s emphasis on cutting-edge contemporary and emerging art. Now in its sixth year, the Art Video Lounge spotlights a leading art institution dedicated to video art, invited by the fair director and LaRete Art Projects to share its own important research. The Video-Forum at Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (n.b.k.), established in 1971, is the oldest collection of video art in Germany. The Video-Forum continues to expand its archive of more than 1,600 works while collaborating with artists on new productions. For the second edition of CONTEXT, n.b.k. has designed an exclusive program of four compelling art videos specifically for the fair’s sophisticated atmosphere and audience.

CONTEXT

ZOOM IN The special exhibition ZOOM IN provides a select few galleries with a platform to screen video works by artists that LaRete Art Projects believes to be of notable significance. In a new format, these viewing booths line the covered walkway that connects the CONTEXT and Art Miami pavilions in the courtyard closed to traffic and transformed into a gathering space with a cafĂŠ, lounge and additional curated projects. One of these moving images will be honored with the inaugural ZOOM IN Award, chosen by an independent committee of experts on video art after considering the works onsite. The first artist and gallery to win the prize package valued at $20,000 will be announced at the fair on Saturday, December 7, 2013.

ART VIDEO LOUNGE Works from the Collection of the Video-Forum at Neuer Berliner Kunstverein The Neuer Berliner Kunstverein Video-Forum (n.b.k.) was founded in 1971 and devotes itself to collecting, presenting and communicating the relatively new medium. One of the first institutions around the world to do so, n.b.k. has amassed a growing archive that encompasses more than 1,600 works of international video art, ranging from the beginnings to the present day. Major focal points of the collection have developed along with the evolution of the medium: Fluxus, video performance, feminist video practice, media-reflexive approaches and contemporary video art from Berlin, as well as an emphasis on Eastern European video art. Key works from the early phase of video art – including seminal artists Marina Abramović & Ulay, Vito Acconci, Rebecca Horn, Bruce Nauman, Nam June Paik, Ulrike Rosenbach, Bill Viola and Wolf Vostell – ground and contextualize current productions by Alejandro Cesarco, Reynold Reynolds, Hito Steyerl, Ming Wong and Haegue Yang.

CONTEXT

20

Since 1972, the Video-Forum has regularly acted as a co-producer of new works –most recently by Ciprian Mureşan, Anetta Mona Chişa & Lucia Tkáčová, Christian Jankowski, Bjørn Melhus, Mathilde ter Heijne and Artur Żmijewski. Comprehensive exhibition projects, screenings, discussions and artist talks, as well as the possibility of viewing the works at the in-house video lounge, contribute to the visibility of the medium. With its history of over four decades of collecting, the Video-Forum is one of the most consistent institutions in Germany for collecting, exhibiting and communicating video art, and offers a comprehensive overview of the main lines of development in 45 years of contemporary art history. Kathrin Becker, head of the Video-Forum, has curated a special program exclusively for CONTEXT of four video works by Hartmut Bitomsky, Anetta Mona Chişa & Lucia Tkáčová, Hito Steyerl and Amir Yatziv. Recognizing the origins of video technology within the military, this exhibition stimulates a timely dialogue with a critical examination of the complex military technology, ideology and politics of imagery. ART VIDEO LOUNGE Hartmut Bitomsky: B-52 Hartmut Bitomsky reflects on his film subjects as symptoms of their time, subjecting them to social and political inspection. In often-elaborate montages, essayistic film compositions emerge that can be minimalist, poetic or objective, and a further perspective is added by the soundtrack, composed by the director himself, and the off-screen commentary. Bitomsky’s more recent films look at our so-called “post-industrial” future, where film has a different future than it has had until now: “The cinema in the past 100 years has faithfully accompanied the industrial age. And now we have to be prepared for the fact that a certain kind of filmmaking, a certain way of recording the gaze on the world, is coming to an end,” Hartmut Bitomsky predicts. The film B-52 begins with a 360-degree panorama shot to get an exact notion of the physis of the subject: the military plane B-52. The large airplane was constructed for the Cold War, and was used as a bomber in Vietnam and long after the end of the Cold War until today in Iraq. The long-distance jet plane was the prototype for large planes for passenger travel. In the film, the B-52 becomes a metaphor for modern warfare and is the starting point for an engagement with U.S. world policy at the end of the 20th century as well as the struggle for global hegemony and nuclear superiority. CONTEXT

22

Hartmut Bitomsky, born 1942 in Bremen, lives in Berlin. He is considered one of the most outstanding German filmmakers today, and enjoys an international reputation. He has made more than 40 films; some of the best known include the films of his Germany Trilogy: Deutschlandbilder (“Pictures of Germany” 1983), Reichsautobahn (1985), and Der VW Komplex (The VW Complex, 1988). He was awarded the Grimme-Preis for Reichsautobahn and for Der VW Komplex. From 1993 to 2002 he served as Dean of the School of Film / Video at the California Institute of the Arts. From 2006 to 2009 he was the director of the Deutsche Film- und Fernsehakademie Berlin (dffb). In 2010, Neuer Berliner Kunstverein presented the work of Hartmut Bitomsky for the first time in an art institution.

ART VIDEO LOUNGE Anetta Mona Chişa and Lucia Tkáčová: Manifesto of Futurist Woman (Let’s Conclude) In their collaborative works, Anetta Mona Chişa and Lucia Tkáčová question gender relationships and their own roles as Eastern European female artists in an art world dominated by men and by the West. The process of post-communist transformation, with its multiple rifts and discontinuities, stakes out the framework of the subject matter of many of their works. Without explicitly taking up feminist positions of the historic neo-avantgarde, many of their works are intended to address gender politics.

CONTEXT

24

Manifesto of Futurist Woman (Let’s Conclude) shows a group of majorettes with seemingly generic movements crossing a concrete bridge in an urban space. Rather than following a conventional choreography, the majorettes communicate a message encoded in semaphore, a signaling language using flags, disks or bare hands that was used to communicate information visually over great distances. The phenomenon of majorettes, young women who marched in groups in parades wearing quasi-military uniforms, is a relic from the early 20th century. Synchronized movements of female bodies and skilled baton twirling characterize the movements of the ornament. The message communicated by the majorettes in the video is the last section of the Manifeste de la Femme Futuriste, which the French artist Valentine de Saint-Point composed in 1912 in reaction to Filippo Marinetti’s notorious call for “contempt for women” in his Manifesto del Futurismo of 1909. De Saint-Point’s controversial manifesto calls for a strong, self-confident woman who is like a man, even if society forces her into the role of reproduction and thereby weakens her. Anetta Mona Chişa, born 1975 in Nădlac, Romania, and lives in Prague and Bratislava. Lucia Tkáčová, born 1977 in Banská Štiavnica, Slovakia, and lives in Bratislava. They have worked in collaboration since 2000, and have participated in numerous international group exhibitions, including at the Kunst- und Ausstellungshalle der Bundesrepublik Deutschland, Bonn (2013); Whitechapel Galerie, London (2012); Moscow International Biennale For Young Art (2012); ZKM | Museum für Neue Kunst, Karlsruhe (2011); The Power Plant, Toronto (2011); Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Zurich (2010); Museum of Contemporary Art, Miami (2009); Museum moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Wien (mumok), Vienna (2009); Taipei Biennial, Taiwan (2008). Solo exhibitions include: waterside contemporary, London (2013); Art in General, New York (2013); Sorry We’re Closed, Brussels (2012); Salonul de proiecte, Bucharest (2011); Christine Koenig Gallery, Vienna (2011); Neuer Berliner Kunstverein, Berlin (2008).

ART VIDEO LOUNGE Hito Steyerl: In Free Fall Hito Steyerl works as an artist, but also as a theorist, and is essentially involved in the discourse about the so-called “Documentary Turn.” Since the 1990s, this “turn” notes an increased appearance of documentary forms in the visual arts field and proposes that in the context of global medialization, the relationship between reality and documentary forms changes significantly. In her work, Steyerl entangles aspects of the documentary with elements of fiction, in order to question the media production of “truth” in a critical way. In the video In Free Fall, the artist stages herself as she makes a slip of the tongue while reading a text about the adaptability of technical things: “Matter loves on” instead of “Matter lives on.” This error becomes the catalyst for the various set pieces of the film, which interweaves the love- and lifecycles of things with each other. An airplane junkyard in the California desert and pictures of aircraft wrecks become the epitomes of the current economic crisis and the stock market crash. The owner of the junkyard reports of economic success in times of crisis: Hollywood, the Chinese – they all need aircraft wrecks, at a high price, for the global entertainment industry, be it in the form of spectacular images, or in the form of aluminum as a raw material, which is recycled to be used as a coating material in the production of DVDs. CONTEXT

26

Hito Steyerl, born 1966 in Munich, lives in Berlin. Steyerl’s work has been featured in numerous international group exhibitions, including: the Venice Biennale (2013); Istanbul Biennale (2013); Athens Biennale (2013); Institute of Contemporary Arts, London (2012); K21 Ständehaus, Dusseldorf (2011); Centre d´Art Contemporain, Geneva (2011); ZKM | Museum für Neue Kunst, Karlsruhe (2011); Taipei Biennale, Taiwan (2010); Documenta 12 (2009); Manifesta 5, San Sebastian (2004). Solo exhibitions include: WYSPA, Gdánsk, Poland (2013); Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego (2013); Portikus, Frankfurt am Main (2012); Chisenhale Gallery, London (2010); Villa Stuck, Munich (2010); Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (n.b.k.), Berlin (2009); Kunsthalle Winterthur, Switzerland (2008).

CONTEXT

27

ART VIDEO LOUNGE Amir Yatziv: DETROIT Amir Yatziv, in many of his video works, addresses the military complex. Sometimes he works with the strategy of re-enactment, with reality and fiction, staging and documentation. The historical range reaches from the Second World War and the genocide of the European Jews up to the present day and the conflict-ridden situation in his home country of Israel. In his video piece Arbeit macht frei (2009) he focuses on the metal lettering attached to the gates of the former concentration camp at Auschwitz and the process of its restoration, including the production of duplicates of the lettering as a temporary replacement at the memorial site, and also as an exhibit for a museum in Israel. His video work DETROIT shows different town planners analyzing the layout of a nameless city on a map left to them and their speculating about the possible influence of the city’s structures on its inhabitants. What the map that Yatziv found in a military training area actually shows is the layout of a city called DETROIT built in southern Israel. It was designed as a 1:1 simulation of a “prototypical Palestinian” urban structure and only serves to prepare Israeli soldiers for their military combat mission. The simulation generates an alternative reality that reveals more about the idea of a Muslim-dominated city than being its realistic image. CONTEXT

28

Amir Yatziv, born 1972 in Karmiel, Israel, lives and works in Berlin. Yatziv has participated in numerous international group exhibitions and screenings, including: Museum Weserburg, Bremen (2013); NCCA Kaliningrad, Russia (2013); Prichard Gallery, University of Idaho, (2012); The Israeli Centre for Digital Art, Holon (2012); Ramat-Gan Museum of Art, Israel (2012); Videobrasil, São Paulo (2011); Kunstverein Harburger Bahnhof, Hamburg (2011); Kunsthaus Baselland, Basel (2011); Haifa Museum of Art (2010); Tate Modern, London (2010). Solo exhibitions include: Galleria Laveronica, Modica, Italy (2012); Holstein-Haus Kunst, Schwerin, Germany (2011); Ramat-Gan Museum of Art, Israel (2010); Appendix2 Gallery, Warsaw (2010).

ART VIDEO LOUNGE: ZOOM IN Raphaëlle de Groot: La réserve Represented by z2o Galleria l Sara Zanin Raphaëlle de Groot’s artistic practice focuses on often-overlooked communities, apparently useless and abandoned objects, and sparsely frequented places. Since 2009 de Groot has collected dispensable objects from people she asked to deliver those objects which have sat for ages at the bottom of their drawers or wardrobe. An entire series of artworks came out of the collection of those futile articles circa 1780. In the video La réserve, de Groot connects those objects of all kinds and sizes with a thread and carries them crammed into the many pockets of a reversed coat she wears onto the roof of an anonymous building, an empty parking lot or a storage facility. Very soon the objects that de Groot connects in an endless process of knotting and knitting seem to assume their own life and meaning; they obviously still reflect the emotional life of their former owners. La réserve is a network of things which isolated do not mean anything, but which acquire meaning through their connection, their mobility and, last but not least, through the performance of the artist.

CONTEXT

30

Raphaëlle de Groot was born in Québec, Canada, in 1974. Her work has been shown actively in Canada and Europe since 1997. Over the years she has acquired valuable collaboration experiences with, among others, the Musée de la Civilisation (Québec), the Cittadellarte – Fondazione Pistoletto (Italy) and the Quartier, Centre d’art Contemporain de Quimper (France). In 2013, she carried out a performance at the Venice Biennale. She was also selected for the first Biennale Online produced by Art+ under the direction of Jan Hoet. She has received numerous distinctions including the prestigious Sobey Art Award in 2012. ART VIDEO LOUNGE: ZOOM IN Jay Yan: Sleeping Giant Represented by Galleri Urbane Marfa + Dallas | Booth E38 In Sleeping Giant, the video of Jay Yan attempting to sleep in a tiny 27-inch box – which was recorded and then projected to fill a tall architectural facade in El Paso, Texas – a man is squeezed in a confined space. The human body struggling under constraint, the human body in relation to inhuman architecture which dominates the postmodern cities, the same cities which are often the destination of those who are in search of a better life: illegal immigrants who are dreaming of better living and working conditions in the Western world, and soon their dreams turn out to be unattainable. But the video of Jay Yan’s endurance performance deals also with every kind of restriction that is, unconsciously or not, part of our everyday life between job and home, crises and fear. Jay Yan works in the space between art, architecture, and design. With a repertoire that spans from the conceptual and the self-referential to large-scale, interactive media projections, he utilizes art as a device to expose the deeper nature of human beings and to explore society’s complex and ever-changing relationship with new media.

CONTEXT

32

Jay Yan was born in 1983 in Shanghai, China. He now lives and works in Los Angeles. His recent works have focused on the sculptural aspects of video projections, architecture and time. He received both his M.F.A. and B.A. from the University of California, Los Angeles, and has studied closely under Pae White, Jennifer Steinkamp, Christian Moeller, Casey Reas and Robert Israel. His works have been exhibited internationally including at F.I.L.E. in Sao Paulo, Today’s Art in Den Haag, Pictoplasma in Berlin, STRP in Eindhoven, and 404 in Trieste, Italy. ART VIDEO LOUNGE: ZOOM IN Nicholas and Sheila Pye: Trilogy Represented by Curator’s Office Trilogy is composed of The Paper Wall (2004), A Life of Errors (2006) and Loudly, Death Unties (2007). These three films give voce to themes and questions deeply rooted in the oeuvre of Nicholas and Sheila Pye, which they develop through video and other languages like photography, installation and performance. The Pyes relentlessly blur the borders between their lives and their art as they tackle the highly charged yet poetic issues that arise from their own relationship. But theirs is not a self-absorbed biographical fascination. Rather, the relationship depicted in their bodies of work becomes emblematic of all things that can go wrong in a mutually dependent and suffocating relationship.

CONTEXT

34

Nicholas Pye was born in Torquay, England, in 1976. He lives and works in Toronto, Canada. As a musician, Nicholas released and toured with four albums in the mid-‘90s. Moving from music to visual art, Nicholas completed his undergraduate degree at the Ontario College of Art and Design in spring 2002 and his Master of Fine Art degree at Concordia University in cinema production in 2005. He maintains an active art practice, which braids together his various interests in performance, cinema, video installation and large-format still photography. Sheila Pye was born near Hamilton, Ontario, in 1978. She currently lives and works in Madrid, Spain. She studied painting, photography, and video at the Ontario College of Art and Design, where she graduated winning the top scholarship. She completed her MFA in film production at Concordia University in Montreal. Sheila is active in directing and producing short films and is currently developing her first feature film. CHECK OUT Milton Becerra: Wynwood Represented by Lyle O. Reitzel Gallery | Booth E49 The fundamental medium for Milton Becerra as an artist is time – the time that Aristotle calls “Aion” or the Continuum, captured in space in an allegorical way through a continuous thread. They are threads, ropes or a variety of fibers with which Becerra succeeds at containing the gravity of matter, and sometimes even its optic presence. Knitting with them a net of luminous energy and physical force, he makes the stone levitate. It is an act that, in itself, goes beyond the symbolic, for it doesn’t limit itself to designating the performative event, but reveals new portals of consciousness – something that precedes, and proceeds from, its own creative process. Milton Becerra was born in Venezuela in 1951. In 1980, he moved to Paris, where he currently works and resides. In 1976, he held his first solo exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Caracas, Venezuela. This was the beginning of a series of interventions in the natural landscape, part of the Land Art movement of the epoch, to demonstrate the process of pollution of the rivers and the devastation of the landscape.

CONTEXT

40

Since 1980 he has been participating in the XI Biennial Young Artists, Museum of Art Modern of Paris; Arte Amazonas Workshop, ECO 92, Museum of Modern Art in Río de Janeiro, Brazil. He is in the private collections of international museums in France, Germany, Spain and Taiwan. He won the Prize for International Projection Exhibition at AICA (2008); Auction Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Texas (2011). Lyle O. Reitzel Gallery www.lyleoreitzelgallery.com

CHECK OUT Mark Jenkins: High Noon Represented by Fabien Castanier Gallery | Booth E45 High Noon is a site-specific installation that Mark Jenkins has created especially for CONTEXT. Two figures, wearing Jenkins’ signature hoodie outfit, stand apart and face each other as if they were two gunslingers from the Old West about to start a duel. Instead of guns, however, the weapons at their hips are rolls of toilet paper. Mark Jenkins is an American artist most widely known for the street installations he creates using packing tape and plastic wrap. With this technique he has created a range of characters, from clear ducks, dogs and babies to clothed hyper-realistic anthropomorphic beings molded from his own body and that of his partner Sandra Fernandez. He describes his work as “absurdist” and with the intent “to create situations that turn the world into a stage.” His installations interact with the surrounding environment, including passersby who unknowingly become actors in his “scenes.” His work has often been called whimsical, macabre, surrealist, shocking and “situationist”, the latter referring to Situationist International.

CONTEXT

42

Mark Jenkins, born in 1970, lives and works in Washington, D.C. Although selected works by the artist have been shown in renowned group exhibitions, including at the Moscow Biennial (2009), and recently graced the stage of Berlin’s Hebbel am Ufer HAU 1 theater, his art is primarily made for the street. For Jenkins, the interaction between his sculptures, their urban environments and the people within them are an integral part of the lifecycle of his work and are needed to make it complete. Indoors, Jenkins has exhibited internationally in galleries and museums, as well as continuing his public interventions in cities around the world. Fabien Castanier Gallery www.castaniergallery.com

BERLIN LOUNGE by Galleries Association of Berlin featuring Haus am Lützowplatz Welcome to the second BERLIN LOUNGE at CONTEXT art miami 2013! This hub showcases the ART FROM BERLIN galleries and provides an insight into Berlin as an art metropolis. With 400 galleries and about 200 museums, institutions and showrooms for contemporary art, Berlin is a magnet for international art lovers. ART FROM BERLIN is a platform for the Berlin art scene at international art markets and is organized by the Galleries Association of Berlin (lvbg) with support from the state of Berlin and the European Union. A professional jury selects the galleries from a citywide call for tenders and presents contemporary art galleries that reflect the city’s innovative and international approach. This year’s jury comprised: Brigitte Werneburg (art critic and independent journalist, taz die Tageszeitung), Dr. Matthias Harder (curator Helmut Newton Foundation Berlin) and Kit Schulte (art dealer and lvbg Board of Directors member).

HaL features exhibitions in two separate spaces, the main gallery and a project space (“Studio Galerie”), which is focused on emerging artists, guest curators and artists groups. Apart from an ambitious exhibition program, HaL regularly hosts talks, concerts, performances and guided tours. This year’s BERLIN LOUNGE presentation previews a selection of works from HaL’s Spring 2014 exhibition, “The Hallucinated World”, featuring painters primarily from Berlin, Leipzig and Hamburg. The works represent a predominantly urban attitude and echo our warped, accelerated and mediated contemporary lives. The Berlin-based artist Philip Grözinger, for instance, portrays modern life with an almost surrealist naiveté. His harshly colored paintings are inspired by German expressionism and are bursting with popular culture references. Haus am Lützowplatz (HaL) Fördererkreis Kulturzentrum Berlin e.V. 45 CONTEXT

The presentation is accompanied by the BERLIN LOUNGE, which offers information on the city’s contemporary art galleries, institutions and museums. The 2013 BERLIN LOUNGE is curated by Haus am Lützowplatz, (HaL), a contemporary art space founded in 1960 during the cold war period. HaL is Berlin’s oldest existing “Kunstverein” (non-profit art association) and continues to realize exhibitions and panel discussions that bridge aesthetics with political and social realities. It is located in the center of former West Berlin next to the Bauhaus Archive in the heart of the lively Potsdamer Straße gallery district.
