Letter from the Director Dear Art Patrons, On behalf of our organization, Art Miami, we would like to welcome you to the Inaugural Downtown Fair. This is a very exciting time for the arts in New York City, as well as for our organization, exhibitors and the international community of art collectors who chose to visit during Frieze Week or call New York City home. Our goal with the Downtown Fair is to produce a high-quality, stand-alone International Contemporary Art Fair providing a fresh alternative to acquire important never-before-exhibited works from both the primary and secondary markets in an intimate light.

The versatile and rich array of works has a strong focus and representation of emergent talent, as well as mid-career cutting-edge artists, anchored by a fresh selection of secondary market works by top name artists from the Modern & PostWar eras. Nearly 600 artists from more than 35 countries are exhibited at the fair. From over 200 dealer submissions, the top 50 galleries were carefully selected by the Downtown Fair’s formal Dealer Selection/Advisory Committee, which includes Yossi Milo of Yossi Milo Gallery, Nancy Hoffman owner of Nancy Hoffman Gallery, and William Shearburn of his eponymous gallery. Between Frieze New York and the Spring Auction previews, the Downtown Fair holds a unique place in the mix of artistic offerings being celebrated this week. The Fair will continue to distinguish New York City as the epicenter of art, fashion, design and the culinary arts, where participants may collect the finest in contemporary art within the historic Lexington Avenue Armory. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our Host Committee and the gallerists for their unflagging support of the Downtown Fair. In addition I would like to thank our philanthropic partners Creative Capital, No Longer Empty, and Time in Children’s Art Initiative for their continued support and commitment to excellence. Last and most of all, we would like to thank you, our patrons, for your support of the Downtown Fair. We hope you enjoy the Fair and look forward to seeing you throughout the most exciting week in New York City’s arts community. Sincerely,
Nick Korniloff Director | Partner

Creative Capital 65 Bleecker St. 7th Fl. New York, NY 10012 tel: 212 598 9900 url: www.creative-capital.org Groundbreaking creators at the height of their powers do more than advance their art forms. With targeted support, they can shift public understanding of our lives, our economy, our culture. Creative Capital invests in those artists, across all disciplines. Some are deep in their careers, others more recently begun. Some are boldly experimenting in form and content, while others hold a creative lens to complex social issues and create spaces where vital conversations occur. Many work collaboratively with other artists and those outside of the arts—in the sciences, in the tech sector and in their local communities. What unites them is that they are all creating transformative work.

As the leading provider of risk capital for the arts, we’ve invested $30 million in 419 projects, supporting more than 500 groundbreaking artists. But our commitment to these innovators doesn’t end with a check. We believe that artists are entrepreneurs in the cultural arena and that they deserve access to tools and resources that parallel what would be available in other sectors. That’s why we partner with artists over the long-term to help them transform their careers. We have seen our model break the cycle of artists working project-to-project, building the sustainable careers needed for them to thrive as artistic visionaries and affect change as creative placemakers. As artist and community organizer Theaster Gates, a Creative Capital grantee, has said, “Artists have the capacity to not only INVESTING ARTISTS WHO SHAPE FUTURE redefine the small spaces that we inhabit, but toINhelp redefine theTHEworld.”

No Longer Empty 150 East 58th Street, 34th Floor New York, NY 10155 info@nolongerempty.org Manon Slome, Chief Curator On the occasion of the inaugural Downtown Fair, I am pleased to have the opportunity to briefly introduce No Longer Empty (NLE) to the galleries and visitors to the fair. NLE’s central and guiding principle is to foster engagement with contemporary art to wider audiences, to break through so many of the erected barriers that have arisen around the establishments of art, be they educational, financial or class based, leading to an oft quoted sentiment that, art is not for me. I feel confident in saying that most of you, as reader’s of this brochure or visitors to the fair, feel that art enriches lives and expands the imaginative possibilities of seeing or being in the world. With these convictions, we have endeavored to develop an artistic model that embraces engagement, education, support for artists, community and collaboration.

No Longer Empty fosters access to contemporary art by engaging the public and experimental, socially conscious artists in professionally curated, site-specific exhibitions throughout New York City and beyond. A nomadic model that provides a transitional or interim approach to vacant properties, we turn each venue into a vibrant site for contemporary art, educational programming and cultural events that are relevant to the dynamics of the host community and devoid of the connotations of traditional art venues. NLE was founded in 2009 as a response to a vacuum left by the fiscal crisis, namely the proliferation of empty storefronts and commercial dead zones throughout New York City and their devastating impact on neighborhoods and communities. The success of an exhibition in a former fishing-and-tackle store next to the legendary Chelsea Hotel and subsequent exhibitions with over whelming attendance provided the impetus for establishing NLE as a new model of community based art practice. Deeply routed in research of the site and the neighborhood, our exhibitions provide artists with exciting possibilities to create new work in response to the architectural and social or historical aspects of the space. Indeed, the commissioning program has become an integral and vital part of NLE’s curatorial process with commissions representing about 80% of the works in our major exhibitions. Since 2009, a succession of sixteen exhibitions and over 60 public programs and events has established NLE’s prominence in New York’s public art world.

NLE’s upcoming exhibition, If You Build It in Sugar Hill, Harlem occurring on the occasion of our 5th Anniversary serves as a milestone of how far we have come in such a short period. The impetus for the exhibition is the realization of Broadway Housing Communities’ new building designed by architect David Adjaye. With 13 floors of affordable housing, an entire floor devoted to early childhood education, and the future Sugar Hill Children’s Museum of Art & Storytelling, we are witnessing a radical example of what can be achieved when architecture and artistic interventions are united with goals for spatial and social justice. If You Build It is an artistic response to the site through the works of 21 artists. The artworks address cycles of urban decay and regeneration; building community through shared heritage; archives and narratives of the neighborhood revealing its many faces and voices; and the role of history in contemplating the present. While many people are cognizant of the neighborhood’s heritage as the epicenter of the Harlem Renaissance, artists have been motivated to bring the communities that now constitute Sugar Hill and its surrounds into new dialogues and to reflect on the present realities of the site: Repercussions of oppression and racial injustice, immigration and displacement, the longing for home in all its senses, and the vast economic disparities that plague our cities. We are delighted to be collaborating with the area’s renowned cultural organizations in expanding the themes of the exhibition through exciting cross-disciplinary programming. Partners include Harlem Arts Alliance, The Classical Theater of Harlem in collaboration with The Dimona Culuralab Theater, Israel; Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance, The Schomberg Center for Research in Black Culture, Proyecto Grafica, The Institute for Public Architecture and Harlem Needle Arts. We are deeply grateful to the Downtown Fair for their generous sponsorship of this exhibition.

The Time In Children’s Arts Initiative: No More Time Outs! On October 3, 2006, a class of timid kindergarteners from Harlem edged cautiously through Time In’s studio door. Their heads peeked anxiously into the strange new space as a host of warm greetings spilled out in their direction. Over the next two hours they would take their first steps toward an entirely new phase in their lives: singing, dancing, making art, learning opera, gallery hops and museum visits – all integrated into one weekly experience Opera through Hands-on Art! For 400 of the city’s youngest and most at-risk public school kids from Harlem and the South Bronx – beginning from Pre-K - dreams have indeed become reality. Time In: a bold outreach program whose ambitious mission is to take children out of underserved classrooms and offer them the experience of a larger, art-immersed world as part of their regular school day, engages children in the vibrant world of the living, contemporary arts, not as spectators or consumers, but as artists themselves. Watch any group of kids at Time In, and you can’t miss how intelligent, gifted and expressive they are. Unfortunately, the majority of them have never been celebrated for their talents: their first order of business has most often been survival. “Children in at-risk communities have so much they’re trying to negotiate,” says founder and director, Cyndie Bellen-Berthézène. “A world of distractions lies right below the surface, and it keeps them – and everyone around them – from being able to focus. Art, movement, music, stories: these are not just educational, but therapeutic activities for them. Making art is a way of creating order in chaos. And children who learn to control their inner lives and trust their imaginations become leaders.”
Do kids think this high art stuff is interesting? Bellen-Berthézène beams, “They ask every day whether or not it’s time to come to the studio. They cheer when I say we’re going to a gallery.” She smiles, “Art doesn’t just mean Picasso. To be great at anything requires creativity. The space between dreams and reality is bridged by imagination, knowledge and mastery together. That’s why it’s imperative that we reinforce children’s innate creativity, at the same time that we give them a broad range of real-world skills.” Can we really change an antiquated educational system and give it artistic flexibility? “Of course we can,” Bellen-Berthézène opines. “If we work together. One child at a time – through the arts – Yes, we really can change the world.” Please join us for Time In’s Gala, Changing the World through Art, at Nancy Hoffman Gallery, June 11, 2014. Contributions to Time In, a 501c3, may be made online at www.timeinkids.org, or by check to The Time In Childrens Arts Initiative, 227 West 29th Street, Studio 4R, New York, NY 10001.
