This work is part of the 1960 Verve Bible series. The subject is one of the most obscure of all those selected by Chagall for the project and comes from the "Book of Esther". Vashti, the wife of the Persian King Ahasuerus, resists an order to dance before him and his guests at a banquet and is banished, to be replaced as Queen by the Jewish heroine Esther. This work is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from the Comité Marc Chagall.
