Second Take At Saronsberg Wine Estate During The Tulbagh Arts Festival Weekend 28-30 September

Clare Menck is the festival artist of

the Tulbagh Arts Festival taking place from 28 to 30 September.

She will also curate an exhibition at Saronsberg Cellar where the existing gallery space has recently been expanded. This exhibition, titled “SECOND TAKE” will showcase the work of 26 artists represented in the Saronsberg collection.

Clare has approached each artist for a new “conversation piece” to enter into dialogue with their work currently in the collection.

The idea is that the new work should not be too similar, but that a comparative chord will be struck through contrast versus similarity. This could perhaps be a then-and-now look at the artist’s output. Participating artists are

Diane Victor, Luan Nel, Arlene Amaler-Raviv, Colbert Mashile, Clare Menck, Cobus van Bosch, MJ Lourens, Johann Louw, Rina Stutzer, Angus Taylor, Claudette Schreuders, Heidi Fourie, Lee Molenaar, André Naudé, Renée Rossouw, Anton Karstel, Nina Holmes, Ruhan Janse van Vuuren, Guy du Toit, Jacques Coetzer, Otto du Plessis, Francois Visser, Sarah Ballam, Ndikhumbule Ngqinambi, Herman van Nazareth and Brett Murray.

“SECOND TAKE” will be on view from 23 September until 28 October. Clare can be contacted at 083 225 0059. At 12pm on Sunday 30 September Clare and several of the participating artists will conduct a free walkabout of the exhibition. This will be followed by a long table lunch. (R200 pp. Bookings essential, contact us at 023 230 0707 or relax@saronsberg.com)

Clare will also hold a cameo solo exhibition at the Epi-Art gallery, 10 Church Street, during the festival. Clare’s work explores water and the inevitable existential experience thereof. Water as subject is prevalent in her work. She is a figurative painter and printmaker known for her bathers and nudes, with retro themes revisited occasionally. Her love of colour and the human figure have become apparent over years of semi-autobiographical exploration. She has, however, diversified into the mediums of clay ceramic sculpture and painting on ceramics.

The Tulbagh Arts Festival features several solo exhibitions in and around the historical Church Street as well as on wine estates like Schalkenbosch, where a “studio sale” exhibition in The Barn promises to bring well-known names to the public at reasonable prices.

The Christo Coetzee Museum will hold a group show of self-portraits titled “Then and Now”.

An exhibition of local artists’ work will open on the Friday evening at the historical Maker’s Mark homestead with live music by Emile Minnie, Colorfields and others..

Raku firing demonstrations will take place at the studios of Vasek Matousek and Ian Robert Simons throughout the weekend.
