Gayle Faulkner’s Textural Impressionism: A Multi-sensory Art Experience

Gayle Faulkner’s art is a delightful sensory experience that blends vivid colors, diverse textures, and a 3D feel. Her mesmerizing acrylic impressionist paintings transport the viewer to her world. Using the Textural Impressionism technique, Faulkner brilliantly captures the beauty of nature, from the sights and smells of the forest to the sensation of walking on grass.

Gayle Faulkner is a renowned artist who skillfully depicts nature in a compelling and unparalleled manner. Her striking works are recognized for their textured appearance, achieved through the impasto technique. This technique enables her to create a profound contrast of colors that breathtakingly reflect light. In addition, her paintings possess a threedimensional quality that entices the observer to immerse themselves in the artwork. Faulkner’s distinctive approach sets her apart and has earned her recognition as an esteemed artist in Textural Impressionism.

Gayle Faulkner finds inspiration from the world around her. She takes numerous photos with an observant eye, which serve as a starting point for her paintings. However, as she begins painting, she rarely refers to the picture. Instead, she engages in a conversation with the painting to determine the next step.

Faulkner has a unique creative process involving extensive experimentation and exploration. Her paintings are primarily made using acrylic paint, gels, and modeling paste, and she uses a palette knife to apply multiple layers of texture onto a blank canvas. This technique creates color and temperature shifts while increasing consistency towards the front or bottom of the canvas.

Throughout her artistic process, Faulkner fully absorbs and enjoys experimenting with various possibilities and variables. She places great importance on value and creates shadows and highlights that provide an engaging experience for both herself and the viewer.

Faulkner’s paintings require a lot of time and effort to create, but the final product is truly unique. Her vivid colors and textures draw viewers into her work and encourage them to explore its many dimensions.

One of the most striking features of Gayle’s work is her use of color. Her rich, vibrant palette captures the energy and emotion of the scene with bright, bold hues that blend and mix on the canvas. By juxtaposing unexpected colors, she creates a sense of tension that adds to the overall impressionistic style of her paintings. This unique harmony creates a powerful yet calming effect. Her art celebrates texture, color, and depth, encouraging viewers to fully engage with the painting and experience it

The result of Gayle Faulkner’s Textural Impressionism paintings is visually stunning imagery. The image appears alive and constantly changing due to the interplay of light and shadow on various textures. The vibrant colors used by the artist generate intense energy, which is counterbalanced by the calming natural forms that frequently feature in her works. Each piece is a complex combination of textures, colors, and forms culminating in a rich, multi-layered adventure.

Faulkner’s art is a feast for the eyes and a celebration of the senses that invites the viewer to explore and engage with it on a more tactile level. Her paintings are an excellent example of how art can inspire and bring happiness. They offer a multi-sensory experience that captures the imagination, transporting the viewer to a world of vibrant colors and textures. The effect energizes and uplifts, leaving a lasting impression on the audience. Faulkner’s unique painting style has resulted in a masterpiece that touches the heart and soul.

“Twilight” Textural Acrylic

As the edge of Twilight gently caresses the landscape the colors mellow and shadows deepen. Step into the wonder of the soft air as you listen to the tinkling of the waterfall. This Textural Impressionistic painting is painted primarily with a palette knife, using acrylic paint, gels and modeling paste. The viewer feels as though they can enter the painting and feel the spray of the water.

CAN YOU DESCRIBE YOUR ARTISTIC STYLE?

“My art is Textural Impressionism which is full of color, texture, and a feeling of 3D that invites the viewer to enter, lean against a tree and embrace the world. Almost entirely painted with a palette knife using acrylic paint, gels, and modeling paste, the painting comes off the canvas. I am always observant of the world around me and take many photos. When I start a painting, I may look at a picture, put down 5-6 lines for my composition, and then seldom look at the photo again. As I paint, I have a “conversation” with the painting to understand what needs to come next. I think of every painting as a newborn baby who will become a toddler and continue to grow and express themselves. Eventually, that child becomes a teenager with angst and drama. But we continue to love and communicate to help that teen find their voice so that the perfect adult emerges.

At the moment, passion and energy are communicated as the palette knife moves across the canvas. I love to watch the paint come off the palette knife so that even though the process is specific, the texture created is happening.

My colors are always mixed with exploring the nuances of tone, temperature, and value. I think colors are a big part of establishing a mood, whether soft, soothing, or dramatic. It is always fun to put unexpected colors next to each other to create a tension that enhances. Many layers of paint are applied either impasto or after areas have dried. This layering is one of the things that increases the impressionistic feeling of my art.

It’s sometimes fun to experiment with a new “process” or painting tool to create a different mood or tone. However, it is vital as an artist to always be willing to grow and improve the entire process.”

“Autumn Lights” Textural Acrylic

The waterway is mesmerizing with the still reflection that glows as the day subsides. The air is calm and the night sounds are beginning. Painted almost entirely with a palette knife using acrylic paint, gels and modeling paste, the painting has touchable textures that invite you to enter.

WHAT IS YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS?

“My paintings are on gallery-wrapped canvas and painted almost entirely with a palette knife using acrylic paint, gels, and modeling paste. Many layers of texture are applied to create color and temperature shifts and increase texture closer to the front or bottom of the canvas. I become immersed in the process and play with possibilities and variables. Value is essential, with shadows and highlights creating an engaging experience for myself and the viewer.

I may paint for several hours before I evaluate what the painting needs. Just stepping away often points out an area that requires adjustments in value or size relationships. It’s fun to be so in the moment that surprises emerge. When these are embraced, a slight shift in direction may be available.

One of the most important things I do as an artist is to be totally in the moment so that my passion and creativity show through. I am always willing to play and sometimes back myself into a creative corner. What fun to find a way to make this work and sometimes discover new possibilities.”

This impressionistic image invites you to enter the forest and to walk about experiencing the colors and textures as they come to life. The verdant landscape is full of gently rustling from the wind, small animals or maybe Merlin, The feeling of 3D comes from the use of a palette knife using acrylic paint, gels and modeling paste. “Gilded Woodlands” Textural Acrylic

HOW AND WHEN DID YOU DISCOVER YOU WANTED TO BE AN ARTIST?

“About 40 years ago, I plucked the idea of being an artist “out of thin air.” I created a 5-year plan to see if I could be successful and make money as an artist. Knowing that education was important, I took some workshops and worked many hours to hone my skills. I did not want to look like any other specific artist but to create a style that was uniquely mine. My plan worked, and I continued to grow and find ways to market my art.

I worked in watercolor and, over the years, added some mixed media. My paintings were structured using the elements and principles of design and were often called whimsical. Subjects were recognizable but lived in creative environments. I had great success with this art, winning numerous awards, and collectors worldwide have purchased the paintings.

With the COVID quarantine, I decided I was ready for a new adventure and started working in acrylics, using a palette knife to create most of every painting. I love to see the texture dance across the canvas. I painted over 100 paintings that first year to find a look that is recognizable as mine. I love this new direction, and it has opened many doors. I am excited to see where the future will take me. As an artist, I want to continue to grow and have the opportunity to enrich the lives of others.”

WHAT MESSAGE DOES YOUR WORK TRANSMIT TO YOUR AUDIENCE?

“Walk into this world and breathe. Lean against a tree, sit amongst the flowers, listen to the music of nature, and find your special place. We all need a place that speaks to the inner harmony of our souls. Many times, a piece of art can do just that.

I want my audience to find the place that speaks to them, whether a favorite memory or a spot that is their ideal. At times, we all need a place to escape. I love that my art can be in that place. If I can transmit my creative passion on canvas so that it speaks to someone, then my work is a success.”

HAS ANY PART OF YOUR STORY INFLUENCED WHAT YOU DO NOW?

“I grew up in a family that emphasized education and hard work to achieve your goals. If you work hard enough with a passion, anything is possible. My passion changed many years after graduating from college, but I knew that if I worked hard enough, learned along the way, and was always open to critiques, I could continue to grow.”
