The Robert Allan Collection
Bob Allan was a member for over half a century of the Australian Ceramics and Glass Circle, president of the Adelaide Society of Collectors and a past president of the Pioneers’ Association of South Australia.
Bob is one of Adelaide’s, and for that matter Australia’s, most passionate and discerning collectors of English 18th century porcelain and historical objects. The depth and breadth of his knowledge in this field, as well as his highly regarded reputation, has resulted in loans to exhibitions at the National Gallery of Victoria, the Art Gallery of South Australia and Melbourne’s H. J Johnson Collection.
At an early age, Bob realised that an accumulation was not a collection. As a result, he set himself the task of understanding and studying his specific areas of interest, in particular Chelsea and Worcester and English 18th century porcelain, thus embodying the actual objective of collecting.
His lifelong passion for collecting was informed by his friendships with such people as John Klinger (Artist’s Market Antiques), Ned Roberts (Moghul Antiques), Harold Quigley (H.J Quigley Antiques) and Shirley CameronWilson. Through his friendship with the legendary English Worcester expert and Antiques Roadshow personality-Henry Sandon, and a long and valued association with Felicity Marno (Stockspring Antiques UK) Bob was able to refine his interest and appreciation in porcelain.
After more than seventy years of assembling and refining his collection Bob has made the difficult decision to retire from the field and sell his collection. Always keen to foster interest in and knowledge of a wide range of antiques and decorative arts, Bob sees his collection as now available to complement current collections or to begin new ones. The opportunity awaits.
