The Johanna Thannhauser Collection

For-Auction is delighted to present a series of exciting auctions over the coming months starting in October 2024 for the family of Johanna Thannhauser.

Brisbane based Johanna Thannhauser’s long involvement with the world of antiques and art began early, under the influence of her parents growing up in the family home of her mother and father who were antiques collectors, in Amersfoort, The Netherlands and this had a great impact on her growing up. In 1951, Johanna and her husband and three children, immigrated to Brisbane, Australia.

While running her fashion business ‘Johanna of Brisbane’ Johanna would also be seen frequently at the antique shops and auction houses in the early 1980’s, before setting up her first shop at Clayfield Antique Centre on Sandgate Road. (Her son Paul would soon follow, and, to this day, he runs Sherwood Bazaar Antiques in Brisbane.)

Johanna would then go on and become an investor, stallholder and then later sole-owner of the Cordelia Street Antique Centre.

However, in 1983 a terrible fire destroyed her family home and with it much of her family’s beloved antiques collection and this had a great impact on her, but over time she regained her enthusiasm for antiques and she would go on and fill her glorious South Bank Brisbane apartment with all the Dutch, French, English and Oriental antiques that now form this amazing collection.

The collection is as extensive as it is broad, and it will be dispersed over several auctions in Melbourne.
