2015/16 International Prospectus anglia.ac.uk/international
Welcome
from the Vice Chancellor Thank you for taking an interest in Anglia Ruskin University. I very much hope you’ll join our progressive and highly successful academic community which is making a huge impact on social, cultural and economic development worldwide. I hope this prospectus gives you much of the information you need and that you’ll want to find out more about studying with us. We’re a friendly place, offering plenty of support and guidance throughout your student experience. This support takes many forms, but most importantly we focus, right from the start, on helping you work towards your chosen career. For example, we offer every student the chance to study our entrepreneurship module. We have close partnerships with local, national and international businesses and at the time of writing, nine out of ten of our students leaving us report being in employment, further study, or both within six months of graduating.* We’re proud to be a modern university – but we’re also proud of our long history. This dates back to 1858, when John Ruskin opened the Cambridge School of Art, now part of our Cambridge campus. Ruskin had wide-ranging interests, including painting, architecture and philosophy; with a creative, enquiring mind, he was not afraid to be unconventional. These are all qualities we encourage in our students and I believe they enrich, not only the academic life at Anglia Ruskin, but also our culture and social interactions. Ruskin’s influence is also felt in the range of expertise we have here. Our reputation is growing in a wide variety of fields, giving our students a wealth of opportunities. You can take advantage of these opportunities at one of our two main campuses: in Cambridge itself, the historic seat of learning, or in Chelmsford, the city which is host to the regional government of the county of Essex. Both offer a lively, rewarding setting for student life, and both places provide access to excellent facilities for study, sports, and social activities. I hope you enjoy finding out more about us and that you’ll consider joining us. We’re committed to making your time here happy and fulfilling and to supporting you as you take your next steps in life.
Professor Michael Thorne
Vice Chancellor

This programme appealed to me immediately as it covered a very wide range of areas in film studies including theory and practice. In these last three years, I have become immersed in so many creative activities that have helped me to grow personally and professionally. I have worked for the Cambridge Film Festival, I co-produced a short film, one of my video works was screened at an international film festival, another at the Arts Picturehouse in a special female filmmakers’ screening. In addition, I was awarded a grant by Anglia Ruskin University to participate in a unique silent film festival in Italy, Le Giornate Del Cinema Muto. I visited Venice Architecture Biennale and got an artist residency in Germany for two months, where I taught a video production course and programmed a film-screening event. Most recently, my 16mm film was screened at the Serpentine Gallery along with many other artist filmmakers.

Teaching on the MA course was really inspirational; the students were well-informed and knowledgeable, and full of ideas about the future of publishing. I especially like the hands-on nature of the course, which allows students to see what working in the industry is really like, and equips them with the skills to hit the ground running in their first jobs.

To be accepted by two conferences as a speaker was not something I expected before I started this course. When I look back at my studies in the last two years, what I clearly see is that I would not have been able to get to this point without the knowledge the course has given me and without my supervisor’s help and feedback. Choosing this course was one of the best decisions I have taken for my career.

I have always wanted to study in the UK and the Public Health course at Anglia Ruskin University was recommended to me by several friends who had already studied here. They told me that the campus, its facilities and the support given to students were all excellent and I have to say they were right! The campus is modern with excellent library and classroom facilities, and my tutors are all extremely friendly and approachable. I am really enjoying my studies, particularly our research methods and non-communicable disease management modules. I am really keen to undertake more research in communicable disease management, possibly within a PhD here at Anglia Ruskin.
I would recommend this course to others, because it has met all my expectations. My current studies will help me in my current job, by promoting health issues in homes and promoting dignity. As a Public Health specialist I will also be able to promote health issues in communities worldwide. I have most enjoyed the teaching on the course, have learnt a lot and found the lecturers interesting. I have benefitted from being able to practice my public speaking and also found the social work aspect of the course useful.
LORNA WAITHAKA Course: BSc (Hons) Public Health Country of origin: Kenya
During the course, I have been given excellent support from my tutors and have been able to undertake field trips to London, specifically looking at waste management systems – it was great to be able to go and see how things are done first-hand. I have also been able to take part in and help to organise a range of public health related conferences. I am now a member of the Royal Society for Public Health and joined the American Society for Nutrition. I would 100% recommend my course to anyone thinking of studying Public Health in the UK. The course has helped me to develop both personally and professionally and allowed me to have a greater understanding of effective public health practice and how to tackle inequalities in health.

Living on the Anglia Ruskin University campus, I realised that studying is only a small part of living in the UK. Fitting into western culture is important and understanding different aspects will teach you to be independent. Welcome Week was excellent; the Students’ Union held lots of activities giving students the opportunity to join different university social clubs. I joined the Football Club, as I love playing football. At first I found it hard communicating with other members of the club as English is not my first language. However, the people I met were very friendly, and my social life has grown as well as my confidence and ability to communicate. I’ve adapted well to fit into western culture and I strongly recommend taking part in Anglia Ruskin activities and joining social clubs. It helps you get to know different people as well as improve your English language skills.

I plan to open my own business in the future and believe that one needs to be aware of the trends in business. The MBA provided me with the ideological, theoretical, practical and intellectual framework upon which my business will be based.
I’ve had a great experience studying at Anglia Ruskin. All the lecturers and personal tutors were very supportive and friendly. Besides studying, I had several group projects with other students. This environment provided a great opportunity to work with students from different countries and cultures. During my time at Anglia Ruskin I also entered the Big Pitch competition which was a business idea competition for students. The competition made studying even more attractive. It meant I experienced all my modules in theory and practice as well as real life. I was delighted to win third prize in the competition, which was £5,000 to start my own business.

Global Sustainability Institute (GSI)
Cultures of the Digital Economy (CoDE)
The GSI is committed to playing a key role in the development of practical solutions to the challenges facing humanity and bringing together information needed to make decisions and the people capable of implementing action.
CoDE is a network of academics working in media theory and network culture, media archaeology, digital music and video, fine arts, video games, production and performance, serious gaming and digital text, combined with scientific contributions from colleagues involved with design and technology, audio engineering and computer design and animation.
The GSI’s research focuses on personal motivations and systems change set against the challenges of sustainability. Our core research question is how does the system influence the individual, and how does the individual influence the system? The ‘system’ is the political, financial, industrial and social frameworks that contribute to challenges we face and lock us into future pathways. These may be environmental challenges such as climate change, natural capital challenges such as resource limits or social challenges such as local and global inequity.

Types of Doctorate Doctor and Master of Philosophy (PhD MPhil) You’ll identify an area where significant new knowledge or understanding will be generated. Having determined an intellectual problem (‘gap in knowledge’) you’ll establish the research question or hypothesis. The framework for undertaking the research is then formulated. Full-time PhD students normally complete their research within three years. MPhil candidates also critically investigate and evaluate an approved topic and must demonstrate an understanding of research methods appropriate to the chosen field. We offer PhD and MPhil study across a wide range of subject areas and in each of our five faculties.
Doctor of Medicine by Research MD (RES) MD degrees are a higher degree available to qualified medical doctors and dentists. You’ll undertake an in-depth research study that will relate specifically to your own medical practice. Completion of the doctorate will identify you as an expert in your field. The qualification will also demonstrate you have a proven ability to problem-solve and to conduct original research at a very high level, contributing to the existing body of knowledge within your own specialist field.
Professional Doctorate (DProf) These programmes are tailored to meet the needs of experienced professionals and practitioners. Research focuses on your own professional practice and integrates professional and academic knowledge.

Practice-based Doctorate Practice-based Doctorates include practice as an integral component (or theorise that practice). This type of doctorate advances knowledge partly by means of practice. Creative work must be accompanied by a written component (thesis or commentary), the length of which must fall within the boundaries established by the Research Degrees’ Regulations.
PhD by Published Work Candidates who have published work (normally written within the last ten years) that demonstrates an independent and original contribution to knowledge and an understanding of research methods, may apply to establish a prima facie case for the award of a PhD or MPhil.

Support for research students Each of our faculties has a dedicated infrastructure to support research and research degree students. All research students, with the exception of those registered for a PhD by Published Work will have a supervisory team. In addition to support from the supervisory team, the department and the faculty, students enjoy training and advice from our support services. Research, Development and Commercial Services (RDCS) is a support service that provides generic training for research students. All the RDCS training sessions are provided free of charge to our research students. We hold an Annual Research Student Conference, during which research students have the opportunity to present posters and papers.
Entry requirements If you are an international student wishing to apply to study for direct entry to a doctorate, you’ll need to show evidence of having studied at a level equivalent to that of a UK Masters degree, which includes training in research. If you do not have these qualifications, your application will be considered on its merits in relation to the nature and scope of your proposed research. In addition, you should be prepared to supply documentation to support your application. For details see How to Apply section.

PRE-SESSIONAL ENGLISH COURSES The pre-sessional course provided by the Language Service Unit (LSU) has been designed to improve your English skills before you start your academic life at Anglia Ruskin. We provide high quality teaching in a friendly and supportive learning environment. We also offer all our pre-sessional students a free pick-up service when they arrive in the UK. course overview
Course ASSESSMENT
Our pre-sessional courses are an intensive programme that ranges from 4-24 weeks, depending on your level of English. Classes are taught in small sizes and every week you will have the opportunity to attend a one-to-one tutorial. Our aim is to develop both your English language and academic skills. Most of all, at the end of your pre-sessional course we want you to feel confident in communicating in English.
At the end of the course, we will assess our students’ proficiency in English with our own test. After successfully passing the test, students will be able to progress to their academic course.
Course Details
Through the short period that I have attended Anglia Ruskin University Language Centre, I have improved my English language skills and gained the knowledge and confidence I need to pursue my life as a Masters student of the university. All this was given in an amazing environment and with great faculty support.

My experience at CRIC was very good. I loved everything about it and had a wonderful time studying there. Living in Cambridge was one of the best times of my life and I made so many friends from all over the world, who I am still in contact with now. I enjoyed everything about CRIC. The staff are very generous and kind and always ready to help. It made me feel like they really do care about every single student they have. The teachers are also very helpful and professional. I definitely think that studying in the UK has been beneficial to my future. For me it has been a ticket for a better and more successful life. I recently launched a new Real Estate Agency in the heart of Dubai and although we are only two months in, we already have more than 100 luxurious properties to work with. I believe I wouldn’t have had this opportunity if I hadn’t studied at CRIC and Anglia Ruskin.

Your Accommodation
Residential Service University Accommodation General information Flats HOUSES about university accommodation Living in university-provided accommodation can be an excellent way to meet new friends. In both Cambridge and Chelmsford, the accommodation is close to the city centre and within walking distance of the train station with its fast links to London. We advise you to apply for accommodation as soon as you have accepted your offer of an academic place with us.
All of the accommodation is self-catering, but meals can be purchased from multiple on-site catering outlets, if required. These amenities are open during the day from Monday to Friday, while vending machines are accessible 24/7. You have a very good chance of securing your first choice of accommodation, especially if you apply early. We can also help if you have any medical requirements and we have a selection of rooms suitable for a range of disabilities, and a few rooms with provision for an adjacent live-in carer.
Flats and houses are normally shared between three and nine students.
■
Most accommodation consists of single study bedrooms, sharing kitchen/living areas and either an en-suite shower room or shared bathroom.
■
Study bedrooms are usually furnished with a single bed, wardrobe or hanging space, chest of drawers or under-bed storage containers, desk and study chair.
■
All room sizes and facilities vary. All accomodation offers broadband internet access (in some houses in Cambridge you may have to organise connection).
■
Room rents, which include utilities (gas, electricity and water charges) to a generous limit, are based on the room size, property location and facilities available.
■

Private sector accommodation If you need to find a room or flat in the local area, our Residential Service offices at both campuses manage ‘AngliaStudentpad’, our password protected website that advertises accommodation available for students. The website also includes general house-hunting information and a student accommodation message board service.
Visit:
angliastudentpad.co.uk
Types of private sector accommodation – Shared houses/flats The owner will not usually live on the premises.
■
Kitchen and bathroom facilities are shared with other tenants.
■
There may be a communal living room.
■
Accommodation is usually selfcatering.
Normally a deposit of between one and four weeks rent will be payable.
■
An owner would not normally expect you to sign a long-term contract.
■
Most bills are often included.
■
Lodgings can be particularly helpful to students who are studying for just one semester or for students looking for the experience of living with local people. You’ll live in their home which may include their family, pets or others. You’ll share the facilities and in many cases form good friendships. Lodgings will require a student to be flexible and prepared to make adjustments to suit everyone in the house e.g. times when the kitchen and bathroom may be available, meals taken, etc. It can be a very effective means of both consolidating language learning and exploring a different culture. Rooms can be shared, or single, and offered on various board types.
■
You’ll be required to sign a contract, usually for the academic year or for 12 months.
■
Rents range from approximately £90 to £150 per room per week.
■
Rents usually exclude bills, such as electricity, gas, water and telephone/ internet.
■
Please be aware that Anglia Ruskin does not have any accommodation suitable for families and that self-contained accommodation in the private sector can be very expensive (typically a self-contained, one bedroom flat costs from around £800 per month based on a twelve month rental period). Family houses are normally more than £1,000 per month in Cambridge, much lower rents can be found in Chelmsford.
Lodgings/homestay The property owner will usually live in the premises.
■
Half board You’ll receive bed, breakfast and an evening meal. You can expect to pay between £80 and £100 per week in Chelmsford and £95 to £130 per week in Cambridge.
Bed and breakfast You’ll receive breakfast only (which may be self-service), and you can expect to pay between £75 and £85 per week in Chelmsford and £90 to £105 per week in Cambridge.
Self-catering You’ll be allowed to use the family kitchen to prepare your own meals and can expect to pay £70 to £90 per week in Chelmsford and £75 to £95 in Cambridge.
Bathroom facilities are often shared with the household.
■
Meals may be provided or you’ll use the family kitchen to self-cater.

Applying for university accommodation How to apply See our website for the latest information and online application forms – applications are accepted from January onwards for September entry in any given year and are processed in date-received order. You can apply online at our website.
Visit:
anglia.ac.uk/housing
How will an offer of accommodation be made? If we can offer university-provided accommodation, an offer will be sent to the email address stated on your application. The offer will include your accommodation address, weekly rent, occupancy agreement dates and rent payment schedule.
Accepting an offer of accommodation
To set up your instalment payments for university-managed accommodation you’ll need to enter the appropriate card details online to enable us to collect payments on the due dates.
Visit:
anglia.ac.uk/webpayments You’ll be issued with a confirmation once you have successfully set up a web payment schedule. For university-provided accommodation that is managed by others, including Sedley Court, CB1, The Forum, YMCA and The Railyard, you’ll be advised on how to set up rent payments as part of your acceptance offer.
Arrivals information Prior to the start of your accomodation contract, you’ll be invited to undertake our online welcome. This will give you all the specific details you need about moving in and what to bring. You’ll also be able to download a specific Resident’s Handbook for the property you’ll live in.
If you wish to accept the offer of accommodation you must follow the instructions you are provided with to confirm your place. Rents are collected electronically via automated means, whether through a credit or debit card or via a secure online gateway. Details of how to pay are provided as part of your accommodation offer. Rents are usually paid in instalments throughout the year with the first instalment commonly higher than later instalments. Students studying for only one semester are usually expected to pay either in full, or in three instalments. In all cases an advance rent payment to secure an offer of accommodation, as well as the first regular instalment, must be paid in full before keys are issued.

COST OF LIVING The UK Visa and Immigration (UKVI) regularly reviews and sets the minimum living cost requirements for students studying in universities in or outside London. This is the same amount which is needed for your visa application too. At the moment, for students studying outside London the required funds are £7,380 per 9 months academic year or £820 per month. Please be aware that this monthly recommended amount does not include your tuition fees. The recommended amount is the minimum funds required to cover living costs and your budget should reflect your own priorities – for example, you may wish to spend a little more on books and a little less on clothes. Please visit the UKVI website for the most up-to-date information about the cost of living in the UK.

Student visas and immigration Students studying with Anglia Ruskin for longer than six months As a non-EEA student you need a visa to study at Anglia Ruskin University. The Tier 4 (General) visa is the category for adult students who want to come to or remain in the UK for their post-16 education. In order to apply for your Tier 4 student visa you’ll need a Confirmation of Acceptance of Studies (CAS), which is a unique 14 digit alphanumeric reference number and the information we have sent to the UK Visas and Immigration regarding your study with us. As a university, we will issue you with a ‘CAS statement’ which includes the CAS number and information that you’ll need to complete your visa application form. The earliest you can apply for your Tier 4 student visa is 3 months before the start of your course and for most countries the British Embassy Entry Clearance Officers will let you have the decision on your visa within 3 weeks of your application with them. Check the guide processing times (gov.uk/visa-processing-times) to find out how long getting a visa might take in your country. Your CAS will not be issued until you have met all the conditions of your offer including paying your deposit and sending us a copy of the information page from your passport. If you have made your application to Anglia Ruskin University via one of our agents or our partner institutions, they will support your visa application and will ask you to provide a number of documents to ensure you are ready to apply for your visa. They will then request your CAS from us. The documents they will need to see will be: Original documents that you have used to obtain your offer including academic qualifications and evidence of English language proficiency.
■
A receipt for your deposit payment.
■
Your passport and any previous UK visas.
■
Evidence of your maintenance funds.
■
If you have applied directly to the University you’ll need to submit these documents to International Admissions (internationaladmissions@anglia.ac.uk) before your CAS is issued. So that you are ready to make your visa application in good time to arrive at the start of your course you should start preparing early.
Students studying with Anglia Ruskin for six months or less The ‘Special visitor: Student visitor’ category will allow you to come to the UK if you are 18 years or older, and want to enter: for up to 6 months to study a short course; or
■
This is especially important if you are from a country which requires you to obtain a certificate confirming you do not have infectious pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) before making an immigration application to come to the UK. Details of how to obtain a TB certificate in your country can be found at: gov.uk/tb-test-visa. Please be aware that you’ll need to book an appointment and at busy times (such as between July to October) you may have to wait ten days or more for an appointment. You’ll also be required to show that you have sufficient funds to pay for your remaining fees and a fixed amount towards your living costs, this is known as maintenance. You must be able to show, using original bank statements, that the money has been held for at least 28 days (finishing on the date of the closing balance) and the end of that 28 days period cannot be more than one month before the date of the application. The bank statements must also be from a bank recognised by the UK Visas and Immigration. If the bank account is not a UK current account then you must show that you have sufficient funds based on the prevailing exchange rate at the time of the application of your visa (not at the time the bank statement commenced). You cannot apply for your visa if you do not meet this requirement – your application will be refused. If you are in doubt please check with us or with our agents as non-compliance with this requirement even on a technicality will result in a refusal of your visa. If you would like further information about applying for a visa, contact the British Embassy or High Commission in your home country.

for up to 11 months to study an English language course.
■
This particularly applies if you are coming to study on one semester programmes (such as Study Abroad) or are undertaking a ‘dual award’ programme where less than six months of the course is based in the UK. If you are coming to Anglia Ruskin University to study an English language course lasting less than six months, but intend to then continue studying with us on a degree programme the Tier 4 visa route is more appropriate for you.
Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) clearance certification from The Foreign and Commonwealth Office International candidates who are applying for postgraduate level courses in certain science or technology subjects (and who are not from either a European Economic Area country or Switzerland) will require ATAS clearance certification from The Foreign and Commonwealth Office. At Anglia Ruskin University, this will mainly apply to students undertaking research or Masters degrees in the faculties of Science & Technology, Health, Social Care & Education and Medical Science. If you require an ATAS certificate, we will inform you of this requirement in your offer letter and provide you with details to support your ATAS application. Park and ride
Cambridge has long been regarded as the cycling capital of the UK. Being such a cycle-friendly city, there are plenty of facilities including a cycle park at Park Street and a hire shop at the railway station. The Cambridge Cycling Campaign provides a comprehensive map of all cycle routes throughout the city, available interactively online or for download.
Chelmsford has two park and ride sites located at Sandon on the A12 (Junction 18/A414/A1060 Maldon Road interchange) and Chelmer Valley. The park and ride site at Sandon has over 1,100 parking spaces available on a daily basis, with 700 at the Chelmer Valley site which operates a bus route through our campus. Buses from both sites serve Chelmsford city centre every ten minutes.
