WHERE California, USA

Founders: Taylor Lane Since 2014, Ben Judkins and Taylor Lane have worked alongside eachother to create a number of short films. Ben Judkins, a filmmaker, raised in Southern California, found his medium to explore and create while helping create a change in the world through documenting the process of making the cigarette surfboards. Taylor Lane, an industrial designer, grew up with a garage full of tools on the ethos of Venice Beach, California, learnt to appreciate alternative perspectives, and has always wanted to be someone to fix things. With cigarette surfboards, you can do it.

CIGARETTE SURFBOARD After a young designer realized that a surfboard – which he crafted from thousands of littered cigarette butts picked up off California beaches – could captivate the eyes of millions across the globe, he decided to use it as the impetus to do something more. The award-winning Cigarette Surfboards became a platform to spark ocean stewardship, a bridge between surfing and activism, and the symbol of a campaign to hold Big Tobacco accountable for their toxic cigarette butt waste.

WHAT

We are strategic creatives and creative strategists, culture experts and design thinkers on a mission to build brands that are relevant to a new generation and resilient for the fast, transparent and volatile world we live in today.

DESIGN PROCESS

Aware Brands sensing and serving the truest, deepest needs of people and society. Awareness allows the Regenerative Brand to create new products, services and experiences that deliver meaningful connection, brand loyalty and indispensable value in people’s lives.

Additive Brands that give more than they take in an interconnected, living ecosystem. An Additive mindset sparks innovation. It’s a “yes and” approach that demands brands go a step further than the status quo.

WE BUILD REGENERATIVE BRANDS WHERE Brooklyn, USA

Alive Brands that create energy and momentum in culture. Being Alive creates a deeper, more personal relationship with the people brands want to reach and leads to more thoughtful and better designed products, services and experiences.

For over 50 years, The North Face has inspired people to live a life of exploration. At the same time, the apparel industry is infamous for impacts on the environment, with 85% of textiles produced every year ending up in landfills. The North Face turned to BBMG to help develop a refurbished product line and marketing campaign that could extend the life of its products, deepen its relationship with a new generation of consumers and position the brand as a leader of a new recommerce movement that inspires more adventures with less waste.

THE NORTH FACE

Research revealed that young millennial women in particular were primed and ready for a new kind of recommerce. A shopping experience that flips expectations of remade clothing on its head. For her, it’s not about sustainability, it’s about style and adventure. It’s about making more exploration, more accessible. Together with The North Face teams, we brought this badass mindset to life with a bold brand experience and go to market strategy for a new, younger consumer.

IBUKU ARC GYNASIUM At the Green School in Bali, in the middle of the Ayung River Valley, a gym under bamboo arches. A structure that could be as light as possible, providing large space, this naturally led to bamboo as the preferred construction material. Anchored to the ground with concrete feet and thin bamboo poles, this majestic roof gives the space below a lively sense of protection and freedom. These grids curve in opposite directions, creating a moving drape that meanders 41 metres long.

The main structure of the house is made of bamboo, however strong foundations are constructed from stone, concrete and steel. To ensure long-term weather resistance, roofs are made using bamboo shingles with an aluminum lining. A wall-less, nature-immersed campus, a model for sustainability and a centre for experimentation, innovation and solutions.

WHERE Bali, Indonesia

Elora Hardy is a Canadian designer, who founded the company IBUKU. She is most well known for designing a community of bamboo homes.

THE DESIGN PROCESS Harvest bamboo is carefully selected from the river valleys and mountains of the islands of Bali and Java in Indonesia, only the mature poles are harvested, creating an incentive for the bamboo farmers to allow the younger shoots to grow. In the past bamboo buildings were susceptible to termites and Powder Post Beetle infestations that would eat the bamboo to dust. The bamboo is treated with a boron solution, a naturally occurring salt solution that renders the bamboo indigestible to insects. Like any natural fiber, bamboo must be protected from the sun and rain. The dramatic overhanging roof and tilting structural columns are designed to protect the villas for the long-term. To prevent moisture, structural beams are secured by steel and concrete to large river rock stones.
