Hey! I am a student studying visual communication at Unitedworld Institute of Design. This year has been particularly interesting for me- getting the chance to study design in Milan has been an eyeopening experience. I have immense admiration and curiousity for the vast worlds of typography and color theory. This is a look into my journey of learning about such creative things- a look through my (contact) lenses. FUNDAMENTALS OF GRAPHIC DESIGN

chaos ―

balance ― Chaos, in your mind or in your surroundings, is extremely unpleasant and irritating. Through this poster, I tried to show the chaos we may sometimes experience by breaking all the gestalt principles used in the previous poster. The color palette chosen for this poster is very bright, colorful, jarring to the eyes.

Balance is pleasing to the eyes. A good, balanced mindset is pleasing for us. Through this poster, I have tried to show the importance of this using gestalt principles like closure, similarity, common path and more. The color palette chosen is very neutral to symbolise the calm and peacefulness.

CARDS BASED ON A SPECIFIC PERSON’S COLOR, MOOD AND OBJECT ASSOCIATION

Everyone associates colors with different emotions- yellow may be a happy color for one person and a sad color for another. This was an incredibly specific assignment.

8

The person chosen by me for this project was my friend Paridhi Sarda. I asked her questions to get to know how she associates certain colors with moods and emotions.

Working out how a specific person sees color, and associates it with their moods and emotions, how much they like to use it, be it in their work, or clothing, or food, tells you a lot about a person.

After I got to know her color association traits, how she sees colors and uses them to describe herself in everyday life, I made some mood cards for her using the knowledge that I had gotten from her. Each card has the colors associated with the mood at the back and a quote related to the mood.

Every day, she will be able to pick a random card based on which illustration at the front draws her the most, to find out what emotion she is currently feeling. The cards are a way for her to get to know more about herself and her way of seeing colors in a better way.

Each illustration on the card is very minimal and related to the mood it is representing. The colors used for each card are solely based on how Paridhi uses color to represent her moods, so she can identify the moods perfectly.

SOCIAL INNOVATION LAB People seldom do not know of all the things a place has to offer. Popular tourist attractions like Bandra Bandstand are extremely difficult to navigate, even through the navigational apps, and the signages on the road are not sufficient to give proper information. This is the problem/ challenge chosen by me for social innovation lab. Target location: Bandra Bandstand, Mumbai

User Persona

14

Age Group: 15-25 Location: Mumbai, Maharashtra Work: Student, Newly Employed Reason for visit: Tourist, Outings, Dates Things to do: Walking along the promenade, eating/ drinking, taking pictures, enjoying the sunset

primary on-site observations There are boards with rules to be followed at the promenade. The boards are so hidden in the trees and the text is so small that no one even stops to read the rules.

15

wayfinding and navigational system + identity For my identified issue of lack of proper signages, I designed a whole wayfinding system. Since Bandra Bandstand is so long and continuous, I also included a branding campaign or a identity for the area. The designs are all templates which can be used for any new tourist attractions in the future, or modified if there are any changes.

ILLUSTRATION

CATANIA

The ‘Turbo Maxi’ brief was to create illustrations for things starting with any three random alphabets assigned to you. The topics for the illustration had to all be correlated to eachother. My illustrations for N,P,C were based on Italian cities- Pisa, Catania and Napoli.

NAPOLI

PISA Illustrations made using Turbo Maxi color markers/ pens and then digitalised using Adobe Scan and Adobe Photoshop.

PORTRAITS: SHERLOCK HOLMES Sherlock Holmes is a character who talks a lot; he has a lot of iconic dialogues and quotes. To show his personality in a portrait, I thought a typographic portrait fit best. The quotes featured on the portrait are all iconic for Sherlock, and the illustration is of Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sherlock Holmes.

PORTRAITS: TOM HIDDLESTON Tom Hiddleston is famously known for playing the God of Mischief, Loki, in the MCU. Through his portrait, I wanted to show the duality of the actor and the difference between the personality of the actor and that of the character he plays. The color palette was inspired by Loki’s signature colors.

20

TAROT CARDS based on a pop culture/ pop art theme. ILLUSTRATION FOR AN ARTICLE The article chosen for my illustration was on microdosing and its effects. This assignment was for us to learn how to adapt our illustrations and ideas for specific briefs and clients. Made using Photoshop.

VINYL COVERS: COLDPLAY I have wanted to design vinyl covers for a long time, so this brief was one of my favorites. The artist/ band I chose was Coldplay. I designed a front and back vinyl sleeve for one of the band’s LPs ‘Adventure of a Lifetime’ and the vinyl record design. The record cover was designed to also have an outer sleeve with the band’s name typecast on it [as shown in the bottom pictures on the left page.]

Coldplay songs are an exhiliarating experience- they make you appreciate the universe and the beauty of nature through modern rock. They feel like an explosion of color, a kaeidoscope of visions, a gradient of pure joy. I tried to show these feelings and emotions visually in the vinyl sleeves, making the front cover incredibly detailed and ethereal and the back cover minimal, but still maintaining the colors from the front cover of the record sleeve.

MUSIC FESTIVAL POSTER TOMORROWLAND 2022 A poster for Tomorrowland 2022: A Reflection of Love using paper cutouts. The design was conceived of elements typically seen in the grand music festival put together in the Tomorrowland logo. The paper cutouts were composed physically and then scanned to add text on Adobe Photoshop.

BRANDING

PERSONAL

BRAND IDENTITY

26

This was a logo that I made for myself. My keywords for the logo were minimal, organized, perspective, clean- things that described me the most. After a lot of ideations, I came up with this logo with positives, negatives and color.

PERSONAL BUSINESS CARDS The main purpose of making business cards was to see how the logo designed by us applied in a professional setting. This was the final design for business cards that I came up with. The cards were designed to be as minimal as possible. The light blue and dark teal colors were chosen for these business cards because light blue represents peace and calm, while the dark teal color is very regal and reminds one of the sea or oceans. The geometric lines at the back of the card are derived from the logo.

Tic Tac launches limited edition flavours every summer. We were asked to come up with three new limited edition flavours and an umbrella theme for this year’s summer Tic Tac and then come up with marketing options like posters, billboards and instagram ads.

TIC TAC LIMITED SUMMER EDITION BRANDING Summer = vacations and fun, but not for everyone. The tagret audience for my Tic Tacs were the people who do not get a summer vacation in their work. This Tic Tac will help transport them to a summer vacation destination no matter where they are. The Tic Tacs are based on the most popular summer vacation destinations and the flavours represent the most popular fruits consumed in those places.

PACKAGING DESIGN 2 EGGS PACKAGING

This project to design a packaging for 2 eggs was a group project between me and Kripa Gambhir. Together, we came up with this structure that tessellates with eachother. The structure and shape is like a pyramid or diamond, inspired by the roofs of Japanese houses. The tessellation ensures any number of these structures to be put together while being sturdy.

34

Our main idea was to keep a geometric structure for the packaging while occupying as less space as possible. The major issue was making sure that the eggs would be safe and not break at all while in transport. We did multiple tests and iterations to the model to make sure it was as sturdy as possible and finally arrived at this completed design. The materials used were simple cardboard and glue. Kripa and I came up with the idea together and each one of us made one of the packagings and then put it together.

35

NABA PACKAGING FOR NABA WELCOME KIT The project to design a packaging/ container for the NABA welcome kit given out by the university every year to new students was a group project between me and Kopal Bhargava. We had to ensure that the packaging that we made would also have a second life i.e. it would not be thrown out after the contents of the welcome kit were taken out. As a welcome it, it needed to contain a thermos, a t-shirt, a pencil and an A5 sketchbook. The packaging should also show the essence of NABA or the city of Milan. The structure of our final model was inspired by the geometricity and the angles of the logo of NABA.

36

The second life of this packaging is a storage organiser. We include the dividers and structure for it with the welcome kit, and after assembling, it can be used to store stationary, makeup, etc. The structure of the dividers is inspired by the Milan city skyline. They are placed in an ascending order so you can see the skyline clearly.

GRAPHIC DESIGN

Personal logo design using geometric shapes and typography respectively, and making patterns out of the geometric logo shape to explore visual graphics and their usage.

38

MOVIE POSTERS OF DIFFERENT GENRES, SAME TITLE/ LINE Seeing how one sentence can be interpreted in so many different ways and made into movie titles for such different genres was one of the best things I learnt from this brief. The line chosen for my posters is ‘I Remember’, and the genres are drama, documentary, horror and romance. I chose to explore different ways of making posters for each of themone was made using paper cutouts, one using collage-making, one was a product of basic photoediting, and one was inspired by Saul Bass movie posters type illustrations.

39

SYNESTHESIA In this brief, I listened to some of the greatest and most influential rock bands of the 60s and 70s [Classic Rock] and made compositions for each band using visuals of what their sound ‘looks’ like to me, and then one collective composition [pictured below] for classic rock as a genre. The bands chosen were Queen, Led Zeppelin, David Bowie, The Rolling Stones, AC/DC and The Beatles. The color palettes for each composition were based on the vibe of the band.

40

Patterns based on the classic rock composition.

41

APPLICATIONS I applied my classic rock composition to music appliances like spotify playlists, album covers, vinyl record covers, VHS records. I also made a playlist on spotify for the most iconic classic rock songs as a tribute to all the artists and the music that I had worked on for this project. Synesthesia was one of the most interesting briefs of the year and I liked every part of it.
