An Inclusive Community

ASB educators and staff recognize the value of having a diverse and inclusive school community and work to ensure that all members of the community are seen, heard, and valued.

WELCOMING

Overwhelmingly, when asked what they enjoy the most about working at the American School of Bombay, our educators and staff will celebrate the warm and welcoming community, and highlight the extraordinary support they received during their transitions to Mumbai.

SAFE

ASB is committed to providing a safe environment for its students and all members of the community. To this end we strive to ensure the safety and well-being of every child. The school relies on preventative practices to reduce risk and ensure child protection and will respond effectively to situations that are harmful to our students and our school community.

ASB innovates and responds to learner needs.”

Learning That Matters

An

ASB graduate, empowered by dreams, skilled as a lifelong learner, oriented towards serving others, is dedicated to making a positive impact in the world.

INDIVIDUALIZED LEARNING

Across all divisions, ASB offers a developmentally challenging program of studies that is individualized to meet the needs of each student.

BEYOND THE CLASSROOM

Middle and High School Students participate in learning beyond the classroom through Week Without Walls and Yatra, ASB’s experiential learning programs—both with an intentional focus on service and adventure trips within India. These experiences give students an appreciation for their host country and offer meaningful interactions with local communities.

COMMUNITY & SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

Our CSR program and NGO partnerships provide all Elementary, Middle, and High School Students on-going opportunities to become aware of the social and environmental challenges that exist, to serve the needs of others in our communities, and to reflect and learn from those experiences.

STUDENT DRIVEN LEARNING

Through school-wide initiatives such as SOLVE at ASB —our semi-annual, multidisciplinary design thinking experience—students are given agency to tackle relevant, real world issues as they collaborate across grade levels.

ASB is a space where learning and teaching practices constantly evolve, supported by educational research and best practices worldwide.”

Exceptional Educators

In alignment with our mission, we strive to ensure that every educator who joins our community grows and thrives through continuous inquiry, action, and reflection.

COLLABORATION

At ASB, there is an everyday expectation of collaboration and learning from colleagues. Teachers plan together in subject area or grade level teams, and work with instructional coaches to develop diagnostic assessments and approaches that best support individual student needs.

CONTRIBUTION

ASB educators have the rewarding opportunity to give back to the local community by participating in our very own Teacher Training Program (TTP) which serves local teachers and NGO partners in Mumbai.

PROFESSIONAL

DEVELOPMENT

ASB continually supports opportunities not only for professional learning, but also for speaking and sharing expertise to help shape the future of education. ASB hosts on-site events and conferences such as ASB UnPlugged, attended by administrators and educators from leading international schools across the globe. In addition, ASB hosts or participates in several yearly learning events including IB Diploma and PYP Conferences, training for Adaptive Schools and Cognitive Coaching, and Google Apps for Education Summits.

The care that ASB takes for staff and for students and for families— is unmatched.

Focus on Well Being

We believe a continued and deliberate investment in the well-being of our community will have a direct, positive impact on each individual’s health, happiness, and success.

INDIVIDUAL

& COLLECTIVE

WELLNESS

ASB truly makes individual and collective wellness a priority—whether supporting educators and staff during the work day, supporting students’ social-emotional well-being, improving on-campus air-quality, providing facilities for physical fitness, offering ongoing health support through the on-campus health offices, or opening mental health conversations within the community.

STRATEGIC AGENDA

Well-being is the central tenet of the school’s 2023–2027 Strategic Agenda which promises to elevate well-being so that each and every community member can thrive— be happy, healthy, and successful. This means creating an environment and experience that avoids putting people in a position where they have to choose between health, happiness, and success.

Life in Mumbai

A KALEIDOSCOPE OF CULTURES

Mumbai is truly the gateway to India. Called Bombay for centuries, the city’s name was officially changed to Mumbai in 1995. The birthplace of Rudyard Kipling and Salman Rushdie, Mumbai is India’s vibrant cultural and financial capital—home to Bollywood and a truly international hotspot.

A city of seven-islands, Mumbai has a vibrant arts and culture scene that spills out of its galleries and museums and onto the streets and sidewalks. Whether you are in the historic district or taking a rickshaw ride through the suburban neighborhoods, Mumbai is always an adventure.

A FOODIE’S DELIGHT

The food scene in Mumbai rivals that of international culinary hotspots such as New York and Sydney, with the added bonus of street hawkers offering cheap local fare

alongside internationally acclaimed chefs and Michelin starred restaurants. Everything is on offer in Mumbai— from local Maharashtrian delicacies to North Indian tandoori, from South Indian idlis and dosas to international cuisines such as Japanese, Italian, and Mexican—you are spoiled for choice. Cooking for yourself? Markets line the streets all over the city with an abundance of fresh, seasonal produce.

A LITTLE NIGHT MAGIC

Nightlife and entertainment is abundant in this cosmopolitan city. With an Opera House, National Theatre, and multiple venues throughout the city, there is never a shortage of international and local gigs, performances, and exhibitions. And that’s without taking into account the local festivals that take place almost weekly, including Ganesh Chaturthi, Holi, and Diwali—three major festivals that run over many days and see people taking to

the streets to celebrate. To help you settle in, there are many dedicated clubs for expats and locals that offer leisure facilities and a chance to make friends.

A SHOPPER’S PARADISE

If shopping is your thing, you’re in luck. The shopping experience is a reflection of the city’s diverse culture. Whether you are looking for a bargain at a lively street market, or high-end designer clothing at one of the city’s world class malls, Mumbai has it all.

WORLD CLASS MEDICAL

Top-quality medical treatment is easily available in world class hospitals, and at a much cheaper cost than in other countries. In addition to medical care, Mumbai has world class dental care that can be significantly less than treatment in your home country.

ACCESS TO TRAVEL

Remember, too, that Mumbai is the gateway to India— an incredible country of many cultures and landscapes including pristine mountains and lush, tropical beaches. You may intend to come for a short time, but once you give your heart to India, you’ll end up staying longer than you ever anticipated.

We look forward to welcoming you.

An auto ride right before it starts to rain—with the smell of the ocean in the air and the wind on my face—ah, bliss!”
