Welcome to ASB’s Elementary School for the 2024/25 School Year: A
Year of Creativity and Innovation
We are so glad that each and every one of you is a part of our school community. This year is extra special because it is our Year of Creativity and Innovation! Our school is a place where learning is an adventure, and everyone gets the chance to explore, discover, and grow Let’s take a journey together through the wonderful world of ASB!
The Science of Learning and Innovation
At ASB, we are on the forefront of the Science of Reading, led by our dedicated Literacy Coach This approach harnesses the latest research to create a dynamic learning environment where curiosity and creativity flourish Just as our STEM Coordinator innovates with the coding of robots to make math engaging, our commitment to the Science of Reading ensures that learning is not only relevant and purposeful but also deeply impactful.
The Science of Reading explores how children learn to read and aims to improve literacy outcomes by applying evidence-based practices. It emphasizes phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension strategies, ensuring that every student develops strong reading skills essential for academic success and lifelong learning.
Using robots in math class not only sparks enthusiasm and participation but also cultivates problem-solving abilities vital for future academic and professional endeavors This innovative approach transcends traditional methods, encouraging students to explore and understand concepts in meaningful ways
“Creativity is intelligence having fun.” – Albert Einstein
Personalized Learning with Inquiry at the Core
Every child is unique, and at ASB, we make sure each one learns in the best way for them This means that in Grade 3, some kids might be working on pre-reading skills, while others might be reading books meant for older grades. We mix different age groups in activities, especially in Pre-K and Grade 4, to help everyone learn together. Our curriculum is always being updated to match our students’ strengths, needs, and interests We listen to their voices and help them become more independent and confident
Rigor In our Elementary School
“Personalized learning is a philosophy rather than a method It’s about meeting each child where they are and helping them reach their potential” – Carol Ann Tomlinson
“It is not the answer that enlightens, but the question.” – Eugene Ionesco
Community Connections
We love to explore and help our community! Our Kindergarteners work with the Welfare for Stray Dogs (WSD) to learn about kindness and care. One of our 4th graders was curious about how sports can bring people together, so they organized a soccer game between ASB and one of our NGO partner schools We learn both inside and outside our school walls, connecting with the world around us
“Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” – Helen Keller
Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice
The Power of Literacy
We believe in the magic of reading! The more our students read, the more likely they are to become successful learners and lifelong thinkers and problem solvers. Research shows that children who read regularly are more likely to do well in school and beyond.
“The more that you read, the more things you will know The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” – Dr. Seuss
Our school is full of wonderful, diverse people from different cultures, with unique ideas and beliefs. We make sure everyone feels like they belong and can share their stories. We learn to understand and respect each other, finding both our differences and our commonalities
ASB Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice Agreements
“Diversity is not about how we differ. Diversity is about embracing one another’s uniqueness.”
Social and Emotional Learning
At ASB, the most important thing is that our students feel good and know how to handle the world around them If they aren’t happy or don’t know how to navigate life’s challenges, learning Math and Literacy won’t be as meaningful. That’s why we have a strong Mental Health Team to support everyone.
“When we feel supported, we can achieve anything!” – Unknown
Collaboration and Teamwork
Parents, you are a vital part of our team! Your child’s teacher is your first point of contact, but at ASB, we work together When we assess writing, for instance, the whole grade level team is involved Every two weeks, we have Student Success Meetings where teachers, counselors, and learning specialists discuss the social, emotional, and academic needs of every child You, as parents, share valuable insights that help us understand and support your child better.
“Coming together is a beginning Keeping together is progress. Working together is success.” – Henry Ford
