Shoes For Crews (SFC) was founded in 1984 by Stanley and Matt Smith. One of their business contacts highlighted the need for shoes with a firm grip to allow staff to work safely whilst moving around slippery restaurant floors. The Smiths took this idea on board and together with a Professor of rubber technology, crafted their first range of slip-resistant footwear.
Since then, Shoes For Crews has been producing one of the best slip-resistant outsoles on the market. Over the last two years, a wave of innovation has swept through the entire product range, focusing on comfort, technology and durability, to offer footwear of outstanding quality from every aspect.
However, one thing has stayed the same, namely our remarkable slip-resistant technology. We take occupational safety and the slip-resistant properties of our outsoles so seriously that we manufacture them in our own factory. This gives us total control over every single component and a close eye on every step in the manufacturing process.
Shoes For Crews now has more than 500 employees in the USA, Europe and China, and has its own logistics centres in the USA, Canada, UK and the Netherlands. Personnel in over 150,000 companies around the world rely on the safety and protection afforded by our footwear. m O re details O n O ur strategy
Our feet won’t be getting any smaller – but the ecological footprint that they leave behind will. This is why we are launching a totally new concept for our work and safety shoes, one which is based on the continuous further development of sustainable production and the increased use of recycled materials. Because our shoes must continue to meet the highest standards of comfort, durability and safety, we have opted for an approach based on continuously adapting our processes.
The use of recycled material requires a completely new production process. The requirements are uncompromising as a result: leading to new tools and moulds being sourced and also new certification processes that had to be set in motion. That is why we are moving forward step-by-step and switch the production of our soles and linings to ever greater use of recycled materials.
Since 2022, we are able to produce linings and microfibre uppers for all of our shoe models from 100% recycled PET, thereby saving significantly on resources in the process. Additionally, we only use insoles made from recycled EVA. The recycled EVA comes mainly from discarded flipflops and waste from industrial productions. The proportion of recycled rubber for outsoles is gradually being increased.
Going forward we strive to introduce more recycled components: Our PU uppers will be produced using approximately 35% recycled PU. We are also in the process of testing recycled alternatives to traditional leather.
We are transferring 30% of our production to the EU – to Portugal and Italy. This shortens our delivery routes and enables us to improve our supply chains in every way.
In 2022, we published our first CSR report, which also includes our CSR strategy. We have set ourselves ambitious goals for the future, to demonstrate how the company can contribute to sustainability.
Together with the launch of our eco-range, we are introducing a sustainable product range consisting of materials made predominantly from recycled components.

PET bottles are converted to a granulate which we use to manufacture, among other things, a new inner lining for our shoes.
Old tyres are separated into their constituent materials, and the rubber processed into granulate or powder form. From this, we make components for our new outsoles.
The EVA material from old flipflops is granulated and recycled to produce new insoles.
