Making School Canteens More Successful

In our last newsletter, I mentioned that we had received your responses to our annual survey of ASCA member school canteens. I gave a brief outline of the results that revealed a number of school canteens were continuing to be successful, but others were facing increasing challenges from costof-living pressures, restrictions on menu choices due to government guidelines, and lack of staff resources and volunteers. We will shortly send out the survey results to all our members.

Meanwhile ASCA is continuing to take measures to help school canteens. We have recently launched our Canteen Resource Centre on our website which is free to use by you as one of our member schools. Some school canteens take one further step and go through ASCA’s Accreditation process. Again, this is free of charge for our members. The Accreditation helps school canteens adopt improved processes.

Since then, there has been increased attention on the viability of school canteens with some closing and others facing difficult times. ASCA is seeking to form an alliance of organisations that have a strong interest in the success of school canteens. While we can learn from measures implemented by school canteens that remain successful, there is clearly also

We find that the most successful canteens are loyal to their distributor. Continually switching suppliers to make short term savings takes time which should be used to focus on work in the canteen and school, and in the long-term results in poorer service and results.
