PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Along with our April Newsletter, springtime is here so we have the opportunity to enjoy more daylight hours, warmer weather, maybe even some yardwork, not to mention getting the barbeque in good working shape for the summer. And as we ramp up our businesses for summertime, I hope that this is a busy and prosperous summer for everyone! Our annual ASCE Awards and Student Recognition Banquet was held at the Peppermill on March 8th, 2016 and I am pleased to say that it was an enjoyable and successful event congratulations to all of this year’s award winners! We had more than 170 attendees this year, and we’ll strive to entertain even more patrons next year. Furthermore, I would like to thank our Truckee Meadows Branch Board of Directors, and the Banquet Committee for all their hard work that makes this a special event every year. And as for upcoming events, I would like to mention that the 16th Annual Marv Byars Memorial Golf Tournament is to be held at The Club at ArrowCreek on Friday July 8th (8:00am tee time). As all of you know, this is a fantastic event used to raise money for the Student Chapter at UNR, and a great opportunity to play some golf (you don’t have to golf like a pro), enjoy the company of friends and colleagues, and also meet new people while enjoying a relaxing day on the golf course. For more information about sponsorship and tournament activities, please contact Allen Tryon at 775-232-2980 or tryona@reno.gov. Also included in our newsletter, you will read that Michael Detwiler from Robison Engineering is our guest speaker for this month’s luncheon (April 12th), and the topic of his presentation is Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS)-Applications of Aerial Surveying. Please join us at the luncheon to meet Michael Detwiler and learn more about this interesting topic. Best Regards, John Bonnett, P.E. President, ASCE Truckee Meadows Branch

Lunch Presentation
UAS Applications of Aerial Surveying Presenter: Michael Detwiler , CP, LSIT Presentation Summary: Unmanned aer ial systems (UAS) ar e now legally operating commercially, with an FAA 333 exemption, in the United States, opening the doors to a new means of topographic mapping and photogrammetry. Uses include topographic mapping for land planning, civil site design, road/railway design, major utility design and many more. The cost is often less expensive than traditional aerial photogrammetry, while producing spatially accurate images down to 1” pixel resolution, and high-density point clouds capable of obtaining highly accurate 3D spatial information. However, operating these units legally requires a breadth of knowledge and intensive paperwork on a federal and local level. This presentation is designed to educate the local Civil Engineering community (private consultants and public officials) on the laws of UAS operation and questions to ask UAS consultants before accepting services and data products available from UAS mapping.
