PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Our July Newsletter is here and I’d like to begin by wishing everyone a Happy 4th of July! This is a special holiday weekend for America, and locally in the Truckee Meadows and Lake Tahoe, there are many activities scheduled to celebrate our Nation’s birthday. For a list of many of the planned events you can visit www.reno.com, and you can also visit www.holidays.net for important and interesting historical information about Independence Day. And now to mention some of the recent/upcoming events for ASCE Truckee Meadows Branch (TMB). Firstly, our featured sponsor this month Is Wood Rodgers, Inc. and you can read their full company advertisement in this newsletter. Sponsorship is key to the success of ASCE Truckee Meadows Branch and cannot be overstated. Lunch Presentation Presenter Bio

Presenter: Dan Gotta Dan has over 45 years of experience in the geotechnical, concrete, and asphalt fields consisting of materials research, design, inspection, and forensics. Dan’s career started in Colorado at CDOT in the Research and Special Studies section. Dan then worked for a Colorado Geotechnical firm for the first half of his career working in and subsequently managing the pavement design and materials testing department. In Nevada he managed materials laboratories and infrastructure related projects. He further developed his expertise in concrete materials research, design, and implemented the state of the art QA/QC programs. He is a member of ACI, ASTM, including several subcommittees, the AGC, and is a founding board member of the Sierra Nevada Concrete Association. He has worked on projects ranging from Ship Terminals, Mines, Dams, Airports, Pavements, and Subdivisions to concrete pads for mobile homes. Dan credits much of his knowledge throughout his career by having the opportunities to learn from great mentors.

Float the River - July 9th Welcome back the rain and join us for a fun day floating the river. We will be meeting up at Wingfield Park and carpool up to Mayberry at 11:00am July 9th.

Food Truck Friday - July 15th Come join ASCE in a family friendly day at Reno's Food Truck Friday at Idlewild Park on July 15th at 6:00pm.

Kickball League - Starting July 25th Starting July 25th, every Monday we will play Kickball for ten games. Games can start from 6:30pm to 9:45pm. As this was a very popular event last year we may have to cap the roster. We will accept members on a first come first serve basis. Mandatory team shirts will need to be purchased to play on the team. Price to be determined as we design the shirts.

Camping Weekend - August 12th - 14th ASCE TMB invites you to a camping weekend Friday August 12th Sunday August 14th. More information will be released as the event approaches.

Lake Tahoe Beach Trip - August 27th Join us for a relaxing day at the beach. We will be going to Sand Harbor to soak in the rays. We will have more information as the event approaches.

The Annual ASCE Marv Byars’ Memorial Golf Tournament is held to raise money for the ASCE Student Chapter at the University of Nevada, Reno. Earned his Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering at the University of Nevada, Reno in 1952; earned his master's from the University of Nevada, Reno in 1954. Organizations/Affiliations: Vice and Head Chairman of the Airport Authority of Washoe County from 1981 to 1983; Reno Air Race Association Chairman for several years; member of the National Society of Professional Engineers; President and National Director in 1972 of the Associated General Contractors; board of directors for the Reno YMCA. Awards: Byars was named Engineer of the Year in 1982 by both the Reno Chapter of the Nevada Society of Professional Engineers and the State of Nevada Society of Professional Engineers; received a Professional Achievement Award and named Alumni of the Year in 1995 by the UNR Alumni Association. PROJECT MANAGER Lumos is actively seeking full-time professionals in the greater Reno-Tahoe region, with strong skills in designing, consulting, and/or project management. Successful candidates will serve in positions as Project Managers, Engineers, and Designers, for a variety of projects and have 2-8 years’ experience in general civil design. Must be capable of organizing and completing phases of projects including proposal, design, submittal, agency coordination and review process, bidding assistance, and construction administration. Must have ability to solve design problems using engineering calculations and general design standards, and to apply concepts learned through required education and prior professional experience to complete project management tasks. Excellent organizational, oral, written and analytical skills are required, as well as an ability to manage multiple tasks. Proficiency in computer design software programs including AutoDesk Civil 3D is required. B.S. in Civil Engineering or equivalent is required. E.I. is required for Project Designers, PE License in the State of Nevada is required for Project Managers/Engineers. Project Managers will manage budgets, technical staff, and reports; contribute to expanding our professional reputation; work closely with other managers throughout the company to promote the company’s business interests in adherence to our mission, vision, and values. SENIOR DESIGN ENGINEER—TRANSPORTATION Under direction, applies full competency in conventional engineering work and broad knowledge of precedents in specialty area. On design assignments, understands how to clearly convey the design intent to engineering drawings and specifications. On assignments involving engineering investigations and planning work, has a firm grasp of the fundamentals of engineering processes and their application to operating systems. On projects involving engineering services related to construction activities, has developed a thorough understanding of construction methods and the manner in which engineering drawings and specifications are translated into the constructed product. Upholds engineering ethics and standards of conduct. 

Strong knowledge of transportation planning and design required, knowledge of water resource and utility design desirable.

Plans, schedules, conducts or coordinates detailed phases of the engineering work in a part of a major project or in a total project of moderate scope.

Performs preliminary engineering design and/or reviews the design and drafting work of junior engineers, designers or drafters.

Prepares cost and man-hour estimates, job budgets and schedules.

Prepares or oversees the preparation of final plans and reports and submits them for approval.

Conducts or oversees personnel involved in engineering investigations and planning work.

Coordinates work with other engineers and professionals within and outside own discipline, and with support services staff.

Plans, schedules and conducts or coordinates construction services on projects of moderate scope.

May occasionally assist in the management of projects.

May perform such other duties as the supervisor may from time to time deem necessary.

Strong AutoCAD and Civil 3D experience, Microstation and InRoads/OpenRroads experience a plus.
