Monthly Newsletter June 2016
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Our June Newsletter is here and I’d like to begin by wishing everyone a Happy Flag Day-June 14th! And now that the summertime vacation season has arrived, I once again mention all the great activities you can find right here in the Truckee Meadows. So when planning for your hard earned time-off this summer, you need not look further than the Reno-Tahoe area, to enjoy a top notch vacation while at the same time supporting your local economy. And now to mention some of the recent/upcoming events for ASCE Truckee Meadows Branch (TMB). Firstly, our featured sponsor this month is NCE, and you can read their full company advertisement along with a current job posting, in this newsletter. NCE is a regular sponsor of ASCE TMB and on behalf of our Board of Directors and Membership, I would like to thank them for their continued support! Next, we are still in search of a representative for a Green Building Design Task Force created by Lynne Barker-City of Reno Sustainability Manager. The goal of this committee is to create a Green Building Design Strategy for Reno and Northern Nevada. If you are interested, or know of someone that has green building design experience and may be a good candidate, please contact any of the ASCE TMB board members. Also, don’t forget that the Marv Byars’ Golf Tournament will once again be held at The Club at Arrow Creek on Friday July 8 th (8:00am tee time). Registration is open until June 10th, so if you haven’t signed up yet or would like more information about sponsorship and tournament activities, please contact Allen Tryon at 775-232-2980 or tryona@reno.gov. Last but not least, for those of you that may not know, Kristina Swallow (Las Vegas, NV), our Master of Ceremony for the last two ASCE TMB Annual Awards and Student Recognition Banquets, has been officially elected as ASCE President-Elect, 2017! This is a major accomplishment for her and a great source of pride for ASCE-Nevada Section (Southern Nevada Branch, Truckee Meadows Branch and Capital Branch). Please join ASCE TMB in congratulating Kristina for this well-deserved position! For complete ASCE election results please visit www.asce.org. Also included in our newsletter, you will read that Scott Gibson, from RTC-Washoe County, is our guest speaker for this month’s luncheon (June 7th), and the topic of his presentation is the Pyramid-McCarran Intersection Improvement Project. Please join us at the luncheon to meet Scott Gibson and learn more about this important and interesting project. Best Regards, John Bonnett, P.E. Lunch Presentation
The Pyramid Way and McCarran Boulevard Intersection is a transportation network component serving the needs of the communities in Washoe County and the Cities of Sparks and Reno. The intersection, one of the busiest in the region, is an active important crossroads for the Truckee Meadows linking Spanish Springs and unincorporated Washoe County to the north, downtown Sparks and I-80 to the south, US 395 and Reno to the west, and residential and industrial areas of the City of Sparks to the east. The Pyramid/McCarran Intersection Improvement Project will reduce traffic congestion at this busy intersection. One new lane in each direction will be added to Pyramid Way. Dedicated turning lanes will also be added to both Pyramid and McCarran. The project will add new sidewalks for pedestrians and a paved multi-use path that will parallel Pyramid on the eastern side. Providing separate spaces for vehicles and pedestrians has been shown to enhance safety. Additionally, trees will be planted near the path further beautifying the area. Privacy screens with a decorative design, selected by the community, will be constructed. The project will also result in an improved and safer configuration of the intersection of Pyramid and Queen Way.
Presenter: Scott Douglas Gibson, P.E. Mr. Gibson currently serves as a project manager of the Regional Transportation Commission of Washoe County Nevada and has nearly 40 years of highway construction and pavement engineering experience. He is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin and a registered civil engineer in Nevada, California, Oregon, and Utah. He has made Reno his home since 1995. Since arriving in Reno Scott has been active in the community both professionally and privately. He was a two term president of the Truckee Meadows Branch of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and is a Past President of the Nevada Section of ASCE as well.
