Monthly Newsletter May 2016
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Our May Newsletter is here and I’d like to begin by wishing everyone a Happy Mother’s Day! Also, the month of May brings the start of our Summertime vacation season along with all of our favorite outdoor activities that the Truckee Meadows so famously has to offer. One of the activities that is a favorite of mine, golfing, leads to the following summary of upcoming ASCE events. Thanks to ASCE YMF (Younger Members Forum) President Bryan Byrne, the annual 2016 ASCE Golf League is set to begin! In fact, you may have already received an email pertaining to this, and if not, the ASCE Golf League will be at Washoe County Golf Course again this year. It will consist of 2 player teams playing 9 holes, and be held every Tuesday night at 5:00pm - the actual start date and league duration has yet to be determined. Please RSVP to Bryan at Bryan.Byrne@ch2m.com by May 19th if you are interested in joining the league. And, if you have any questions pertaining to the league, Bryan can also be reached at the aforementioned email address. Also, the 16th Annual Marv Byars Memorial Golf Tournament is to be held at The Club at Arrow Creek on Friday July 8th (8:00am tee time). As all of you know, this is a fantastic event used to raise money for the Student Chapter at UNR, and a great opportunity to play some golf (you don’t have to golf like a pro), enjoy the company of friends and colleagues, and also meet new people while enjoying a relaxing day on the golf course. For more information about sponsorship and tournament activities, please contact Allen Tryon at 775-232-2980 or tryona@reno.gov. Also included in our newsletter, you will read that Stephen Dickenson from New Albion Geotechnical, Inc., is our guest speaker for this month’s luncheon (May 10 th), and the topic of his presentation is “Performance Based Seismic Design of Buildings, Bridges and Earth Structures” as it pertains to Reno. Please join us at the luncheon to meet Stephen Dickenson and learn more about this interesting and relevant topic. Best Regards, John Bonnett, P.E. President, ASCE Truckee Meadows Branch

Performance-Based Seismic Design of Buildings, Bridges, and Earth Structures: What Does it Mean for Reno?
Lunch Presentation
Presentation Summary: Cur r ent seismic design codes, standar ds, and provisions for civil infrastructure including highway systems, tall buildings, and dams outline the need and methods for performance-based seismic design. Performance-based seismic design is intended to allow for a range of tolerable structural deformations at defined seismic hazard levels. The deformation limit is specified considering; the type of earth- or structuralsystem, impact of the earthquake-induced deformations on appurtenant structures, and post-event serviceability and repair. Dr. Dickenson will share an illustrated overview of insights gained on numerous projects, postearthquake reconnaissance investigations, and applied research focused on the seismic performance of various structures. The presentation will address the implications for civil engineering practice in Reno and highlight the need for integrated project interaction by geotechnical and structural engineers. Presenter: Stephen Dickenson, Ph.D., P.E., D. PE Dr. Dickenson has been active in geotechnical earthquake engineering research, education, and professional practice since 1985. His international project experience and applied research has focused primarily in the areas of; seismic hazard evaluation, seismic ground motion characterization, dynamic soil response, liquefaction evaluation and mitigation, slope stability and seismically-induced ground deformation, dynamic soil-foundation–structure interaction (SFSI), and performance-based seismic design of major civil infrastructure. He has served on several professional committees charged with developing seismic guidelines, standards, and codes for lifeline infrastructure, with incorporation of performance-based design principles.

THANK YOU TO ALL THE MID-PAC VOLUNTEERS AND SPONSORS! On behalf of the ASCE Mid-Pacific Regional Conference Planning Committee, I would like to thank everyone for their support in helping the student chapter put on an amazing conference. Held April 7-9, Mid-Pac facilitated seven engineering competitions that focused on different aspects of the civil engineering profession that includes geotechnical, transportation, steel and concrete, and environmental. The incredible organization and work done by our volunteers and coordinators led to an efficient schedule that streamlined competitions. The ASCE chapter leadership worked with substantial cooperation with YMF to make sure that everything was ready. I received a multitude of feedback commending the overall conference and how well it was put on from many of the attendees. I would like to thank all of the sponsors who contributed not only judges and volunteers but also financial contributions that made the entire event possible. In addition to the success of the conference, I am also proud to say that the UNR Concrete Canoe Team will be attending the National Competition for the 11th year in a row. As a project manager I am thrilled by the performance of team members who worked tirelessly for months on end to ensure that we would secure the regional title. The National Competition will be held on June 9-11, 2016 in Tyler, Texas, and the team is making all preparations for yet another memorable Nationals venture. An additional thank-you to the sponsors of the canoe team. Without your support, we would never reach this point in our decade-long tradition of excellence. We look forward to what awaits us in June! Sincerely,
Evan Jordan ASCE Mid-Pacific Student Conference Chair UNR Concrete Canoe Project Manager (775) 722-6602 nevadacanoe@gmail.com
