PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Our September Newsletter is here, along with another premier summer event in the Truckee Meadows, The Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-off at Victorian Square in Sparks!! This popular event began in 1989 with just a few competitors, and has since developed into one of, if not the premier Rib Cook-off in America. So if you would like to partake in some of the festivities, please visit www.nuggetribcookoff.com to find a complete calendar of events along with other interesting Rib Cook-Off information! And now to mention some of the recent/upcoming events for ASCE Truckee Meadows Branch (TMB). But before I do that, I would like to mention that our “Featured Sponsor” for September is Lumos and Associates, and you can read their current company biography on page 4 of this newsletter. Sponsorship is vital to the success of ASCE TMB and cannot be overstated, and is why we include company information to highlight our sponsors for each month of the year. “Standard Specifications for Public Works Construction”

Lunch Presentation Presenter Biography

Topic: This presentation will provide a brief summary of the 2016 changes to the Standard Specifications for Public Works Construction (Orange Book). Speaker: Michele Dennis, P.E., M.ASCE Michele Dennis recently retired after 40 years of professional experience in both the private and public sector. A resident of the Reno area since the early seventies, she received her B.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Nevada Reno. Michele is a licensed Professional Engineer in Nevada and California and is a member of the Washoe County Sewage, Wastewater, Sanitation and Well Hearing Board. She began her career with a brief stint at NDOT, before joining the brotherhood of geotechnical engineering consultants. During her years in private practice, Michele published several articles on innovative individual sewage disposal system design and treatment and was instrumental in developing sand filters and evapotranspiration for local use. In 1998, Michele ventured back into the public arena and was employed by the Regional Transportation Commission. During her employment with RTC, she facilitated the committee to review and update the Standard Specifications for Public Works Construction (Orange Book). Michele is married with one daughter and three grand-puppies. She loves to travel and eat. Always in search of new sights and culinary experiences, you’ll often see her tail lights as retirement has allowed her to answer the call of the open road without hesitation.

Pyramid-McCarran Intersection Improvement Project Tour Come join us for a tour of the PyramidMcCarran Project as the intersection is being widened. We will be touring the site September 21st starting at noon and ending around 1:00pm.  Lunch will be provided. E.I. is required for Project Designers, PE License in the State of Nevada is required for Project Managers/Engineers. Entry-Level Water Resources Engineer The Atkins Water Resources/Water Infrastructure Group is seeking a highly motivated, detail oriented, self-starter to join our Reno, NV staff as an Entry-Level Water Resources Engineer. The applicant will complete and/or assist senior engineers with a broad range of engineering projects related to water resources and civil engineering, including flood control facility design, water/ wastewater utility design, watershed management, stormwater and wastewater master planning, transportation drainage design, storm water quality planning and design, hydraulic modeling and FEMA map revision studies. The preferred applicant will have experience with a combination of the following skills: stormwater/water/wastewater design, hydrologic and hydraulic methods and modeling, drafting/ design software (Microstation/AutoCAD), and highway drainage design. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software experience associated with water resources is preferable. Education and Experience: Bachelors or Masters in Engineering with 0 to 2 years experience

Generally applies standard engineering techniques, procedures and criteria in carrying out a sequence of somewhat diversified tasks requiring the use of analysis, interpretation, and deductive reasoning. Designs and develops plans and drawings, which may include the development of preliminary layout and/or final drawings. - Performs engineering calculations. Performs hydrologic and hydraulic modeling and analysis. Contributes to technical report writing and data/analysis summary tables and exhibits. Participates on projects involving construction activities by reviewing shop drawings for conformance with easily interpreted specifications; assists in recordkeeping and in generating progress reports; observes relatively simple construction procedures, and collects samples for quality control testing. Prepares cost and material quantity estimates. Coordinates work with other engineers and professionals within and outside own discipline, and with support services staff. Performs field observations of construction where appropriate. Performs such other duties as the supervisor may from time to time deem necessary. Upholds engineering ethics and standards of conduct.
