PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Greetings! I hope your 2017 is off to a great start! It’s Banquet time! Our Annual Awards and Student Recognition Banquet will be held on Thursday March 9, 2017 at the Peppermill in the Tuscany Ballroom. Sponsorships forms and award nomination forms are available and contained within this newsletter. Please consider purchasing a sponsors table and attending this celebration. We have also added some new sponsorship levels and are really looking forward to showcasing the local talent and projects we have in our area. Please also take a couple minutes to think about a project and/or engineer that deserves recognition and get their nominations in! Recently, Dan Stucky, the TMB president-elect, attended ASCE’s Western Section Branch Leaders Conference. This was a great forum to learn about other ASCE branches and to gather ideas on how we can make our branch better at serving our membership. Dan had this to say about the experience. “It was a great opportunity to attend the annual ASCE WSBL conference this year in Los Angeles, CA. We were able to meet and exchange ideas with many of the western U.S. branch and section leaders, as well as interact with national leaders and learn about the various ASCE initiatives. For me, the most exciting moment of the weekend was talking to and meeting with some of the ASCE student members. The incredible enthusiasm and interest exhibited by this youthful group convinced me that the future of engineering is in pretty good hands.” Thanks Dan for attending, being such a great TMB delegate, and being so enthusiastic about the future of our branch and profession! Thank you to all of our luncheon attendees that took the time to fill out a member questionnaire about our luncheons. For anyone who missed it, please find the questionnaire in this newsletter and feel free to fill it out and send it to me. Your feedback is invaluable to us as we look to provide our members with the experience you are looking for. Results of this questionnaire will be compiled and presented along with any new directions the board decides as a result. Again, thank you so, so much for your time and input! Presenter Biography
Nevada Land Ferry Concept Presented by: Steve Merrill
&
Steve is a graduate from University of Nevada Reno in civil engineering and has his professional Presentation engineering license in the state of Nevada. Steve Summary is also a graduate from the Nevada CPM program. Steve has worked for the Nevada DOT for the last twenty five years, eighteen of those in the Roadway Design Division and the last five as the Chief Location Engineer. Steve started his career at NDOT as a rotational engineer. While in Roadway Design, Steve held the positions of a staff 1 engineer, Road Designer, Senior Hydraulic Engineer, Project Manager and ten years as Principal Road Design Engineer. Steve is the creator of the Nevada Land Ferry concept and Demand Response Rumble Strips.
Presentation Summary At the February 7 ASCE meeting, attendees will learn about the Land Ferry/Steel Interstate concept, who is involved, research that has been completed in Phase I, research that is being proposed and potential next steps with taking the concept forward. A short video and PowerPoint presentation will be given. The Land Ferry/Steel Interstate concept can be viewed as both a mobility, and as a service concept that embraces and synergizes the best of different modes of transportation. The presentation will illustrate how entire trucks along with cars can quickly be loaded onto shorter faster trains that operate on schedules similar to a transit system. The Land Ferry will only stop at its final destination. Drivers are accommodated in passenger cars providing lounges, food, and sleeping space. Most important to truckers is that their trucks continue to move while drivers take their required rest, a big productivity boost. The Land Ferry modernizes electrical systems within the corridor. Using railway catenary to provide power to electric locomotives, new power transmission corridors will be opened allowing smaller renewable electrical resources to become viable in areas that in the past were not. Electric cars and trucks will be charged while on the Land Ferry. By the end of the presentation, attendees will have a better understanding of what the Land Ferry/Steel Interstate concept is, and will be welcome to attend a short Stakeholders Working Group meeting immediately following the luncheon. We will discuss and critique the Phase II work scope. The concept touches on several different transportation modes and engineering fields. Attendees will be intrigued and have opportunity to ask questions to spark discussion and debate.
Please RSVP by Wednesday February 1st
