PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE “There's nothing I believe in more strongly than getting young people interested in science and engineering, for a better tomorrow, for all humankind.” –Bill Nye Education and outreach are very important facets of our profession to ensure we attract young people into engineering. Many K-12 students lose interest in math and science, especially in middle school, which makes them less inclined to study engineering in college. Although many people attribute this to low quality of teaching and preparation, this simply isn’t true. Instead, the K-12 science curriculum is highly disconnected from topics that are relevant to students’ daily lives and interest (Miaoulis, 2010). To mitigate this, there has been a recent push to increase STEM education for K-12 students. As someone who works in engineering education, I feel strongly that students can be easily engaged and excited about engineering through hands-on outreach activities. The perfect opportunity for these types of activities occurs during Engineers Week, which is February 22-28, 2015. It is a time to celebrate engineering and increase awareness of the profession. This includes outreach to the public, kids, educators, and parents. The university will be celebrating E-Week with many on-campus events hosted by the various engineering clubs (including our own ASCE Student Chapter). The branch is also participating in outreach activities outside of E-Week. First, we have visited several high school career fairs in the past few months to talk to students about engineering. Second, The Younger Members will be making several visits to ACE High School—a local charter school that focuses on building trades, CAD, and other emerging technologies—and giving presentations about engineering. This is designed to inform students about engineering, engage them with various activities, and encourage them to pursue engineering as a career option. There is still a lot of room for expansion of these activities within out branch, and I would be very excited to get more people involved with engineering outreach. If you are interested in any of these activities, I would love to hear from you.

UPCOMING ASCE WEBINAR Calculation and Use of Time of Concentration

- A Live ASCE Webinar Date: Friday, February 27, 2015 Time: 12:00 9m - 1:00 pm ET Mark Peterson, P.E., M.ASCE, has a BS and an MS degree from Montana State University. He has been practicing engineering for 30 years and is a registered engineer in Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota. He has worked in state government in highway design and subdivision review.

For more info and registration go to www.asce.org/seminars

REGISTRATION ENDS ON FEBRUARY 24TH Pay a single site registration fee and an unlimited number of people in your organization can attend

WEBINAR BENEFITS •

Know the basic tools needed to select an appropriate method to compute time of concentration

Become familiar with five different methods that can be used to compute time of concentration

Understand which method should be used for which type of drainage basin

Each attendee earns 1.0 professional Development Hours (1.0PDHs)

www.ascetruckeemeadows.org

Time of concentration is a frequently overlooked parameter in urban drainage design. It is often calculated using one of several common equations that are selected based on user familiarity rather than on the characteristics of the drainage basin. Time of concentration can also be calculated incorrectly when the emphasis is placed on finding the longest flow path, which often is not appropriate when used to determine peak flows. This webinar will cover the Kirby-Hathaway Equation; the Kirpich Equation; the FAA Equation; the SCS Method for computing time of concentration; as well as a solution using the physical concepts of sheet flow, shallow concentrated flow, and open channel flow. The webinar will include examples of the different equations and a discussion on when the use of each equation is appropriate. It will also include a discussion on requirements for time of concentration calculations in stormwater design manuals.

Cost: $249 (Member)/ $299 (Non-Member) Special Offer on Webinars: Individuals and Small Organizations who are members of ASCE (less than five engineers) save $100 on the registration fee – Just use promo code LESS05 when registering.

Exercises You Can Do Behind The Work Desk Basic Neck Stretches - Rotate your neck from side to side, forward and backward. Look left and right. Do not roll your neck, this is not good for your neck joints

Roll it - A good way to prevent Carpel Tunnel Syndrome is to roll your wrists clockwise and counterclockwise once every hour Also for good circulation, do the same for your ankles and shoulders. Squeeze and Release - Squeeze your abdominal muscles, hold for a few seconds and then release. Try even doing this with your buttocks. Leg and Foot Raises - Push back from your desk while sitting in your chair. Lift up your foot at a 90 degree angle or as far as you can go and hold as long as possible. Repeat with your other foot. For an extended workout, hold your leg out so that it is level with your hips. Now hold in that position for as long as you can. Repeat with the other leg Utilize an Exercise Ball– Try swapping out your chair with an exercise ball to sit on. This will not only help you with your posture, but you will be working out your core muscles, force proper spine alignment and help improve your circulation.
