PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Happy Holidays! I know all of you are very busy with work and family obligations, but I wanted to let you know how much we appreciate all your support for our branch. Our sponsorship drive was a great success. We truly have amazing support from our Truckee Meadows engineering community. Thank you! I will be brief in this message, but wanted to announce a special and well deserved honor that our Truckee Meadows Branch received this past week from ASCE National. Our branch has been awarded the ASCE Outstanding Section and Branch Award for Small Sections and Branches. There are nearly 250 ASCE sections and branches across the country and our branch is recognized as one of the best in the country. This award considers the ability of the branch to provide meaningful events, outreach activities, educational opportunities, support to our YMF and student chapters, and other beneficial opportunities for our membership. This is an incredible achievement and something that we are very proud of. We have many people across our branch board of directors, YMF and student chapters, and others who volunteer their time and effort to make our branch outstanding. The combination of these volunteers and the great support we get from our members is unique. I’m extremely proud to be a part of this branch. Lastly, I wanted to remind you all of the upcoming ASCE Annual Awards and Student Recognition Banquet scheduled for the evening of Thursday, March 8, 2018. A save the date reminder will be sent out to all members soon, so you can add to your calendar. Included in this newsletter are nomination forms for project and engineer of the year awards, as well as student scholarship applications. Please complete to nominate the outstanding projects and engineers that make the Truckee Meadows a better place. We hope all of you will attend this special event to celebrate all the great projects, engineers and students that we have in our community. Thanks again and Happy New Year! An Engineer-Philosopher's Approach to the Interaction of Earthquakes and the Built Environment
Presenter Biography & Presentation Summary
Presentation Summary: The world is not as it seems. This also pertains to the built environment. Energy flow is in everything. Structures that we often think of as "rigid" are actually vibrant with energy and have their own unique personalities (natural period, etc.). Likewise, every earthquake also has its own personality, energy content and frequency signatures. When the energy from an earthquake enters a structure and interacts with its energy there is a dance of energies and it is analogous to a musician (the earthquake) playing a musical instrument (the structure).
