PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE January marks the New Year, a month of new beginnings, and fresh starts. The Truckee Meadows Branch of ASCE is embracing that idea and beginning some great new things with our professionals, younger members, and students. To being the year off right, we are very proud to announce that the Truckee Meadows Branch was awarded the Outstanding Award for Small Sections and Branches! This was awarded to one small section/branch within all of ASCE and we are honored to be recognized for this achievement. The first big change for 2015 is that our professional luncheons will be held in a new location with the intent of bringing more value to our members. The luncheons will still be held on Tuesdays at the beginning of each month during the same time frame. We have moved to location to the Peppermill, and the cost of lunch will increase slightly ($25 for members). We hope the new venue is a positive change for our luncheon attendees. Next, the Annual Awards and Student Recognition Banquet has been moved up one month and will be held on March 10, 2015 at the Peppermill. This will enable us to submit our local award winners for regional level awards within ASCE. In addition, it will give the students a little breathing room before the Mid-Pacific Conference, which is generally held in April during the same week as the banquet. The Younger Members are starting off a new year with a new board of direction and a lot of activities planned. They will be hosting a technical tour of Peavine Hall (the new UNR dormitory), reinstating the monthly socials, and hosting PE Review Sessions for the spring exam. The ASCE Student Chapter has a new set of officers starting in 2015. I would like to congratulated Evan Jordan and Claire Schreckenberger for taking on the role of Co-Presidents for the chapter this year. I am also very happy to announce that the student chapter won the ASCE Music Video Contest, where they rewrote the lyrics of a popular song to be about the Earthquake Engineering Lab at UNR. The Younger Members helped with the contest and the two groups will be splitting a $5,000 prize! I am very excited and proud to start a new year with the Truckee Meadows Branch of ASCE and look forward to everything to come. Kelly Doyle, P.E. President, ASCE Truckee Meadows Branch

With the advent of numerous stormwater regulations, the use of stormwater BMPs to manage and treat runoff has become a critical component of any site development project. This use of stormwater management measures, while intended to protect the environment and control the quantity and quality of runoff, can still alter hydrology in ways that may give rise to legal issues and litigation from downstream landowners. Claims of hydrologic trespass, nuisance, and other actions deriving from the broad area of water law can sometimes arise even when the designer has properly followed the local regulations. This one-hour webinar will discuss the basic principles of water law, drainage law claims of nuisance and trespass, and other legal actions as they relate to stormwater management design. Cost: $249 (Member)/ $299 (Non-Member) Special Offer on Webinars: Individuals and Small Organizations who are members of ASCE (less than five engineers) save $100 on the registration fee – Just use promo code LESS05 when registering.

Fighting Off the Pesky Flu with Food
HEALTHY TIDBITS
The first thing that comes to mind when trying to avoid catching a cold, is good hand washing and getting plenty of sleep. But did you know that a lot of what you eat and digest is a huge factor in your health? It may surprise you, but Vitamin C is not one of them. Vitamin D This little vitamin adds a huge amount to your immunity. Eating fatty fish like salmon, herring and light tuna canned in oil is a great start. Drinking fortified low fat milk and orange juice are great to pair up with a healthy packed breakfast. Doctors typically recommend 1,000 units for these winter months since the sun is scarce. Protein If you do not have enough protein in your diet, your body has to break down its own tissue to make the necessary nutrient. Try to eat two to three servings a day of dairy foods, soy foods, nuts or dried beans. Also skinless poultry and lean meat are great as well. Unsaturated Fat Omega 3 fatty acids may enhance immunity by flattening inflammation. Research has found that a higher intake of specific monosaturated fat decreased pneumonia risk. Fatty fish, omega 3 enhanced eggs, tofu, walnuts and ground flaxseed are filled with fatty acids. Zinc This mineral is crucial for supporting healthy immune cells. Its antiinflammotiry and antioxidant properties help fight virues. Eat beans, lean red meat and nuts, such as cashews and peanuts. But do be careful, when taking a supplement there is such a thing as too much zinc. It can actually interfere with immunity.

Kelly Doyle, President kellydoyle.asce@gmail.com 775.784.4223 JANUARY LUNCH MEETING Tuesday, January 6th at 11:45 am Peppermill Casino Capri Ballroom “ Renown TRV”” Presented by: Mike Davidson and Tom Casazza The Renown Institute of Cancer currently provides radiotherapy therapy services and due to increased patient volumes is requiring expansion of its current facilities. Renown has looked to RAD Technologies to assist with upgrading existing equipment without shutting down current patient therapies. RAD Technologies is the developer of the Temporary Radiotherapy Vault (TRV) which is a modular building that can be installed in as little as two days once the foundation for the building is prepared. The TRV comes with a preinstalled and pre-commissioned Varian linear accelerator which allows for the TRV to quickly begin treating patients. Once Renown has completed the permanent upgrades necessary to address the increased patient volumes, the TRV may be removed in a few days and delivered to its next destination. The construction of the Renown TRV was recently completed in November 2014 and was previously in use in Idaho and Colorado.
