Monthly Newsletter November 2015

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE With Thanksgiving just around the corner, it’s a great time to remember what is important in our lives, and to be thankful for all of life’s many blessings. On that note, I would like to thank all of you for your ASCE membership, and wish all of you a very Happy Thanksgiving! Speaking on what is important in our lives, in our region and local community, UNR will be hosting the ASCE MidPacific Regional Conference April 7-9, 2016. In this newsletter you will find a message from Evan Jordan, our ASCE Student Chapter President, outlining the conference and its activities. Also, Evan has identified the need of volunteers for judging the many events, and I ask that all of you please give some thought to possibly donating your time and expertise to make this Mid-Pacific Regional Conference a memorable success! Also in this newsletter, you will read that Dan Holly is our guest speaker this month. Dan is the City of Reno’s Building and Safety Manager for Community Development, and has a lot of experience with building permitting. This topic is always of great importance to our profession and should be a very interesting material for discussion. In addition, you will find a flyer highlighting the ASCE Youth Member Forum (YMF) tour for November, “Seven Troughs Distilling Company Tour”. Please see the aforementioned flyer for all pertinent tour details. Lastly, I would like to thank Atkins Global for being this month’s Gold Sponsor. Atkins Global has been very active in the community and has provided numerous quality individuals to our ASCE Truckee Meadows Branch-Board of Directors.

Dear ASCE Truckee Meadows Branch Board and Members, The University of Nevada, Reno will be hosting the American Society of Civil Engineers Mid -Pacific Regional Conference, a premier engineering convention that promotes practical application of scholastic knowledge in various engaging competitions between engineering students. With over 600 students, faculty, and engineers from the United States, Canada, and China, the conference, taking place April 7-9, 2016, attracts international attention both in the engineering community and with the general public. Any student that participates is guaranteed an improved understanding of civil engineering field, leaving them better prepared for their careers, and you would play a direct role in that. My name is Evan Jordan, and I am the co-president of the ASCE/AGC Student Chapter at the University of Nevada, Reno. For this competition, we need a variety of experts within the civil engineering community to help ethically and effectively judge the competitions. Along with this letter there is a small packet on the different competitions available to judge for. Any level of experience in your field is welcome in the field you would like to judge for. All volunteering is welcome! The conference is composed of many competitions that include the Concrete Canoe, Steel Bridge, Daniel W. Mead Paper, Geo-Wall, Water Treatment, Water Research, and Transportation that all test the participants’ abilities in design, analysis, and practical execution. After reviewing the information enclosed, I would be happy to answer any questions that you might have regarding what being a judge entails, my contact information being at the bottom of this page.
