ABOUT US
The ASCE Truckee Meadows Branch has been serving the local Civil Engineering community since the founding date in 1967. As a matter of fact, it was started prior to 1950. Truckee Meadows Branch was originally a part of the Sacramento section. The Sacramento and Nevada Section came together in 1960 and hosted the Annual Meeting of National ASCE here in Reno. The Nevada section was then started once the Truckee Meadows area had enough members to become a section along as in Carson City, and Las Vegas. We are committed to bringing you quality presentations,
community
outreach
opportunities,
learning
opportunities
(including PDH credits and PE review courses), and social events. We believe that our ASCE group is very unique due to the close connection between our Younger Members Forum (YMF) and our branch. ASCE Truckee Meadows is a proud supporter of the student chapter of ASCE at UNR and has helped to develop an environment where engineers graduate into YMF and then continue to remain active with the branch. We are proud supporters of the Concrete Canoe Team, Steel Bridge Team, and other various Civil Engineering competitions. We believe the future of our profession is held within the bright young minds that will one day be in our shoes and that is why it is our goal to foster creative thinking and community involvement. If you want to be a part of ASCE be sure to sign up for our email list and join us at our next event!
The Branch members and I would like to thank John Webster Brown for sharing some information about the history of ASCE here in Northern Nevada. John was a part of the student chapter at the University of Nevada in 1950 and went along and became President of the Truckee Meadows Branch and the Sacramento section in 1960.

Communications
(Letters, Emails, Schedules)
This webinar will describe why the contemporaneous documentation that is created by the stakeholders during the life of a construction project is so important and valuable. The various ways that we document and preserve what occurs during the course of a construction project for posterity will be described, and suggestions for making this documentation more fact-focused and effective will be presented. The webinar will discuss how effective communications and documentation can increase the likelihood of resolving issues in a timely manner and without resort to the claims or litigation process. Real-life examples of both effective and not-so-effective communications will be presented.

Stream Restoreation - Proper Channel Sizing and the Significance for Future Channel Stability - A Live ASCE Webinar *New Webinar*
Date: Monday, September 29, 2014 Time: 12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m. ET
Webinar Instructor Bryan Dick, P.E., M.ASCE, P.H., has 17+ years of experience in water resources, fluid mechanics, fluvial geomorphology, stormwater management, hydrology, hydrogeology, environmental remediation, stream and wetlands mitigation, stream restoration, and natural resource management. .
Reminder: Registration ends on September 25th Pay a single site registration fee and an unlimited number of people in your organization can attend at that site.
The long term stability of stream and river restoration projects, as well as many bank stabilization projects, is highly dependent on proper channel cross-sectional area or channel dimension. Traditionally, open channels have been designed to handle large flow events with little consideration given to the more frequent intermediate flow events that move sediment on an annual basis. As more and more stream restoration projects have been implemented, the ingrained mindset of a larger channel being conservative is apparent in many completed projects that are experiencing excess shear stress, inability to handle the sediment load in wider sections and various other symptoms of oversized channels. Under-sized channels can have problems as well, such as with sediment transport and pattern and bed profile maintenance. Properly sizing the channel and fitting it within the context of the slope and planform is critical for long term project success of stable channels, both in restoration and conventional hydraulic channels. $249 M/ $299 NM Late Registration: Registrations must be received three business days prior to the webinar date. Special Offer on Webinars: Individuals and Small Organizations who are members of ASCE (Less than Five Engineers) save $100 on the Registration Fee – Just Use Promo Code LESS05 when registering.

How to Keep a Busy Life Organized
WAKE UP EARLY AND GET THINGS DONE Make the bed as soon as you get up. If you work late nights, you may want to consider taking your showers and night so you can allow yourself an extra 20 minutes of sleep MAKE SURE THAT YOU WAKE UP EARLY ENOUGH TO GET READY Nothing says bad day when you start off the day by running behind. You may feel run down and don’t want to get out of bed, but you sure don’t want to look like you just rolled out of bed. This will also help you get everything packed up and ready for the day. USE EVERY SECOND OF YOUR TIME WISELY While eating lunch, you may catch yourself staring out the window in a sleepy state; however take this time to make a list of things that you need to get done after work or projects that you make want to do around the house. That way you can go back to work with a clear head. PUMP IT UP Studies have shown that listening to some of your favorite songs on the way to work will decrease stress by half. There may be times when as soon as you walk in, your co-workers start demanding orders. This will help make even the hardest tasks a little less stressful. PAY DAY Remind yourself to be thankful you have a job and that some money is better than no money. It may be able to so spend it right away, but make sure your priorities are set. Bills come first, then make a list of things you want and need. Purchase what you really need and the wants can come later. Think before you buy. Ask yourself these questions: do you need to get your hair done soon? Is this something that I have at home that I can use instead? DON’T WASTE TIME WHEN YOU GET HOME Trust me, I know that feeling as soon as you walk into the door, kick off your shoes you want to head straight to the couch. Instead, get things prepped for the next day so that by the end of the night you can spend some quality time with the family. Go to bed at a reasonable time and your next day will look a little brighter. WORK IS JUST WORK We all know it has to be done and most of us will have to work for a very long time. Do your job well and don’t make it miserable for your self. Do yourself a favor and as soon as your day is done, leave the stress there and walk out the door. Easier said than done I know, but don’t not let stresses take over your life. Remember its just a part of your day.
