Notes from Our Leadership As you read the following pages, it is my sincere hope that you feel inspired by the work we have done together over the last year. Because of your support and participation, we have been able to advance the mission of the Anne Springs Close Greenway further and faster than previously imagined. A favorite quote of mine is, “A society grows great when old men plant trees in whose shade they know they shall never sit.” Our organization looks to inspire the next generation of conservationists - people who see the value in green space and their place in it. We will never have another Ms. Close, but we will succeed as a community if we foster young people who think as she did, and strive to make a difference as she did. It is our hope that you will continue to be a member, donor, volunteer, or even all of those things. We hope that you continue to find refuge in the 2,100 acres we call the Anne Springs Close Greenway. We could not do it without you.
Throughout her life, Anne Springs Close lived the mission of this Greenway. She connected people to nature, fostering a passion for conservation, preservation and protection of natural resources in countless individuals, children and families. In my time with Ms. Close, it was clear that she was particularly passionate about ensuring that the Greenway remains accessible and affordable for everyone. In this report, you will find information describing how the Greenway continues to work to improve upon and find new ways to increase affordability and accessibility. Your support of initiatives such as the Anne Springs Close Bridge Program helps make that goal a reality. Thank you for your generous support and for helping ensure the Greenway will continue to fulfill its mission for generations to come.

In Memoriam On behalf of the entire Close family, we want to express our most sincere gratitude and appreciation to the members and donors who give back to support the mission of the Anne Springs Close Greenway. Our mother announced to the children in attendance at the inaugural, opening Earth Day celebration in 1995 that this would be a place where, when they were as old as she was or when they were grandparents, they could bring their children to the Greenway...that it would be here forever. While our mother may not be here with us in the physical realm, her spirit, vision and steadfast determination to ensure that we always preserve this resource [the Greenway] and always strive to keep it accessible for all, remains with us, always. As we enter into spring, a time of rebirth and renewal, our family celebrates alongside you - the members and families that illuminate this magical place each and every day. Greenway membership grew over the previous year to 17,500 households, representing more than individuals.
T I M PAT T E R S O N R E T I R E S 2021 marked the completion of Tim Patterson’s leadership as President/CEO of Leroy Springs & Co. In his unassuming way, Tim led LSC through two decades of change and growth, and his steadfast leadership and tireless work ethic have set the company’s course for a prosperous and stable future. Tim oversaw the sale of Springmaid Beach (2014), with proceeds benefitting the Greenway endowment. He cemented the Greenway’s conservation easement, ensuring that its 2,100 acres will remain protected forever by the Nation Ford Land Trust. Tim was also instrumental in the creation of a communityled Board of Managers and stewarded construction of some of the property’s most-loved spaces, including the Comporium Amphitheater, Mary Warner Mack Dog Park, Greenway Gateway and Domtar Forest Porch. Tim’s impact can be felt throughout the organization as other assets have grown and thrived under his leadership. He remains committed to the mission and vision provided by the Close family and his daily presence will be greatly missed.

A Year in Review
CO N S E RVAT I O N E F FO RTS G RO W Two strategic partnerships were strengthened in 2021, helping to advance the Greenway’s conservation initiatives and natural resource management. First, a grant totaling $39,200 through the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program, allowed staff to enclose two additional acres of Piedmont prairie habitat located near the endangered Schweinitz’s sunflowers and to help manage woody species that have encroached upon nearly 11 acres of prairie. Additionally, in partnership with the Catawba Riverkeeper, funds were raised to deploy a Litter Gitter™ marine debris collection device into Steele Creek to capture litter before it reaches the larger watershed and further impacts wildlife habitat.
G R E E N W AY P R E S C H O O L E X PA N D S In 2021, the Greenway’s nature-based preschool added a second location at the Hampton Wildlife Fund Adventure Center (HWFAC). This program served 46 of our community’s youngest learners ages 3 and 4, incorporating indoor and outdoor experiences that prepare children for kindergarten, while positively affecting their emotional, mental, physical and social development. Kids learn outside, rain or shine, dressing for the weather and following a regular schedule of enriching activities. The half-day program has been warmly received by our community, with public enrollment for the 2022-23 academic year filling in less than 24 hours.
OUTREACH PROGRAMS RETURN While schools temporarily paused or reduced field trips due to the pandemic, Greenway staff brought programming directly to the students, providing outreach programs in area schools and working to mold programming to meet specific, state-aligned curriculum for Kindergarten through Fifth graders. Outreach programs cover a robust set of subjects such as recycling, animal care, eco-stewardship and environmental food chains. Activities include the use of hands-on learning tools that foster creativity, collaboration, critical thinking and communication. Outreach programming on site grew as well, adding more opportunities for the community to try new and different aspects of programs offered on the property, including camping, fishing and kayaking, among others.
BRIDGE PROGRAM RENAMED Leroy Springs & Co. (LSC) announced the renaming of its financial assistance program in honor and memory of visionary leader and Greenway founder, Anne Springs Close. To make its facilities and programs accessible for all, LSC restructured its financial assistance program in 2018 to provide free or reduced cost membership and program access to the Greenway, FLYERS and other programs. Ms. Close served at the helm of the LSC board for over 40 years and believed deeply in expanding this program to provide a means for even more people to afford LSC and Greenway recreation and education opportunities. The Anne Springs Close Bridge Program will continue to broaden community access to member privileges and programs that were so important to Ms. Close. In 2021, 438 families received $231,331 in financial assistance for various Greenway and LSC memberships and programs.
ST R AT EG I C P L A N U P DAT E D In partnership with Chuck Flink, FASLA, the author of the original Anne Springs Close Greenway Strategic Plan and CEO of Greenways Inc., our organization is working to update the most recent strategic plan and create a new five-year master plan for the Anne Springs Close Greenway. This plan will serve as a roadmap for expanding programming, improving facilities and becoming financially self-sustaining for the long-term. The Greenway continues to be a national leader of green infrastructure planning and design, working to incorporate world-class conservation practices that encompass trail development, operations and management plans. Last September, the Greenway announced that Sandra Hagler White and her husband, Spratt, had donated a beautiful 167-acre tract of land located in the Bethesda community near Rock Hill to the Greenway. The Whites placed a conservation easement on the property in 2016 with the Nation Ford Land Trust, the same organization that holds the Greenway’s conservation easement. The acreage currently offers a horse barn, 32 acres of pasture, several miles of trails, two ponds and a cabin. Land management is a primary focus, including pond management to help control aquatic weeds and remove invasive species. The Greenway hopes to utilize a portion of the land to conduct private programs and events, similar to current group campout offerings, scouting opportunities, fishing and other outdoor recreation programs. The property is currently used only for Greenway programming and is not available for public use.
