The Memory Man
in random order? Dave Farrow, a Guinness World Record holder for the greatest memory, remembers all 3068 cards from 59 decks of cards in random order. How does he do it? This is what he says about his unique skill.
Reporter: When did you first discover that you have this gift of memorizing cards?
Dave: Well, I don’t have a gift. Memorization is a skill, and it can be taught. So we can all actually train our brains to memorize better.
Reporter: What kind of student were you in school?
!
Dave: At first didn’t do very well in school. I was diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia. But wanted to do better, so I went on a two-year quest to discover everything could about memory. went from being a very poor student to being at the top of many of my classes. This happened so quickly that some of my teachers thought I was cheating and lowered my scores. But when demonstrated my memory techniques, they believed me.
Reporter: Do you have any advice you would give a student who is struggling in school and with tests?
Dave: There are many tips, and here are a few: Break up large tasks into smaller parts. Take each part and do it fast, then take a break. And repeat. You can also visualize what you read. But the most important thing that learnt is: Don’t believe what other people say about you. Don’t let people put you in a box because then you will be in that box for the rest of your life. You have to decide what you want to be and what will make you happy. Based on an interview at ConstantContact.com.

Thursday 17 October
Dear Diary, It is autumn. It’s cold and rainy outside. It started out as a boring day. We had a maths test at school.
After school I had to go to grandma’s birthday party. It turned out to be quite good fun! My uncle Josh took a big bite of the birthday cake, his face turned red and he spat out the whole bite on my mum’s dress. Then he had to run to the kitchen to have a huge glass of water. We soon found out why. My grandma had put salt in the cake instead of sugar! We all had a good laugh and it will definitely be a party to remember. Now my mum’s dress is in the washing machine.
Come on, you can do it!

How do you become friends with someone?
Getting to Know People
You need to talk to others to make friends. Ask them questions about different topics or problems.
You: Hello, Nadya. Nice to see you again. How are you?
Nadya: I’m fine, thank you. What about you?
You: Oh, I’m fine. How is your dog? I remember you said he was sick.
Nadya: Thanks for asking! He’s doing much better.
You: I’m glad.
I’d = I would
Friends often have something in common. Then you always have something to talk about.
You: Do you like spiders?
Tim: No, I prefer snakes.
You: Really? I have two spiders at home. Do you have any pets?
Tim: No, but I visit the reptile zoo quite often. They have spiders there, you know.
You: Cool! Maybe we could go together some time?
Tim: Yes, I’d like that.
Friends can live far away from each other. You can still meet online to talk or play a game.
You: Hello, Wei! How are things in Singapore?
Wei: Fine, thanks. It’s so hot outside.
You: Oh, really? It’s the opposite in Norway – freezing cold. Do you want to join our group for some quests later?
Wei: Sure! Who’s the group leader?
You: It’s Daniel. We will go online around 1 pm, Norwegian time.
Wei: Great! I will join you for a round before I go to bed.
You: See you then!

Which language(s) do you use when you talk to your friends?
The Language of Friends
We asked two children who recently moved to Norway: Which languages do you speak? Which language(s) do you use with friends?
Lilja (11), Sweden
I speak Swedish, Norwegian and some English. I speak Norwegian with my friends in school, but when I chat with my friends from back home, I speak Swedish of course. I am glad I can speak English. In the future, I think that will be the most useful language to know. I would also like to learn French in secondary school.
Ernesto (12), the Philippines
I speak Tagalog, English and Norwegian. In the Philippines, people speak many different languages. My family speaks Tagalog, but we also learn English in school. They are both official languages in the Philippines. I have lived in Norway for four years now, so I speak Norwegian with my friends at school. It was hard in the beginning, but after a while it got better. It helped a lot that I could speak English.
