Welcome to the 42nd Adhesion Society Annual Meeting! We are excited to gather our society in Hilton Head, maintaining our legacy of annual meetings in the Southeast with the hopes of warmer and drier weather for everyone! This meeting follows the immense success of the World Congress on Adhesion and Related Phenomena (WCARP), which was aligned with our 2018 annual meeting in San Diego. We hope to maintain this trajectory for adhesion science and our profession! Our interdisciplinary program of fundamental science and engineering will surely catalyze new intersections of adhesion science, from pressure sensitive adhesives to adhesion challenges in transportation technology. We continue to infuse excitement for manufacturing with a focus on advanced manufacturing, including recent advances in additive manufacturing (AM). AM combined with the expertise of our society will lead to many innovations in the next decade. I want to acknowledge the tireless efforts of Nick Shephard and Chris Wohl, and through their volunteerism, they have assembled a world-class program with a vast array of sessions that touch on many emerging fields. We also continue the prestigious 3M award session on Sunday, gathering our society to set a tone for the conference while honoring the past giants of our field as well as our current leaders. The program also involves many new elements, including novel programming in “lessons learned in adhesion science, a networking event on Monday evening for new industrial scientists and academics, and an exhibitor space coupled with posters. We also instituted an option for a shorter lecture, which is intended to give everyone an opportunity to lecture in some fashion. Thanks to Henkel for Tim Long, PhD their continued support of the Peebles Professor & Assoc. Director of Outreach, session, please take the time to listen Virginia Tech to our future leaders! President, Adhesion Enjoy the many technical sessions, fun run, various social networking events, including some delicious food and drinks to catalyze discussions and partnerships. I truly hope this annual meeting provides new knowledge and ideas to further your efforts in adhesion science. Welcome to Hilton Head! Tim

February 15-16, 2019 • Sonesta Resort Hotel This course provides an introduction and overview to a variety of critically important topics in the field of adhesion. Unlike other courses, the goal is not to give comprehensive coverage of the adhesion field, but rather to use the Adhesion Society’s Annual Meeting to assemble an outstanding group of instructors that would not otherwise be available in a single course. Each subject is presented by a scientist who is a world leader in that area. This gives the attendees the opportunity to learn from and interact with scientists whose expertise provides a unique view into the history, science, and relevance of their topic.
PROGRAM Topics (tentative) • Introductory Remarks - David Dillard, VA Tech • Designing Adhesives Using the Polymer Parameters: Structure Property Relationship – Tim Long, VA Tech
• Viscoelastic Properties of Adhesive Materials – Dave Yarusso, Consultant, Yarusso Consulting, LLC • Surface Energetics and Adhesion – Giles Dillingham, BTG Labs • Types and Classes of Adhesive Design: Synthetic Strategies – Tim Long, VA Tech • Surface Modification and Surface Analysis – Giles Dillingham, BTG Labs • Stresses, Strength, and Failure of Adhesive Bonds – David Dillard, VA Tech • Fracture Mechanics Applications to Adhesive Bonds – David Dillard, VA Tech • Deformation, Fracture, and Toughening of Structural Adhesives – Ray Pearson, Lehigh University
• Soft Matter Adhesion – Costantino Creton, ESPCI Paristech • Introduction to Pressure Sensitive Adhesives – Dave Yarusso, Consultant, Yarusso Consulting, LLC • Adhesion at the Micro/Nano-Scale: Characterization and Applications – Kevin Turner, University of Pennsylvania
*Course times: 8 am to 4 pm each day (breakfast starts at 7 am)
