Dear WAC 2022 Attendee: As the official host of the 10th World Adhesive and Sealant Conference, it is my pleasure to welcome you to Chicago on behalf of The Adhesive and Sealant Council (ASC)! We are honored that you have joined us for this momentous event. During the next three days, the global adhesive and sealant community will come together to network, collaborate, and learn from keynotes and speakers represented by the industry’s leading companies. “Securing Our Future” is the theme of WAC 2022, and we have numerous sessions designed to prepare you and your company for tomorrow. More than 90 speakers in 16 separate educational tracks are presenting on key topics such as sustainability, circular economy and sustainable strategies, supply and demand in volatile times, mergers and acquisitions, e-mobility, global drivers and trends, adhesive and sealant product innovation, bio-based and bio-inspired materials, and numerous sessions on market and product specific topics, including hot melt technology for packaging and hygiene, applications in building and construction, high performing structural adhesives, and reactive polyurethane materials to name a few. The WAC EXPO will feature the largest assembly of adhesive and sealant exhibitors in North America with more than 100 manufacturers, suppliers, and service providers from across the globe. You will also not want to miss Monday’s Chicago-themed Opening Reception and Dinner, the WAC EXPO Reception on Tuesday, and Wednesday’s Great Gatsby-themed Closing Reception and Gala Dinner. Additionally, the Hot Melt Short Course and Emerging Leaders Workshop held in conjunction with WAC feature outstanding speakers and presentations, offering unique value for attendees on key topics and skills. Our industry, through its strong resilience, has weathered the Covid-19 pandemic and severe supply chain disruptions, and it is poised for continued global growth. WAC is occurring at the perfect time as the industry is eager to reconnect and reestablish relationships with our suppliers, customers, and vendors in the adhesive and sealant value chain. While the future outlook is favorable, there continue to be concerns about supply chains, workforce, raw material costs, and government regulation. These challenges are felt globally and require increased focus within our industry. Working together, we will secure our future. I wish you a successful conference and an enjoyable visit here in Chicago!

Through a combination of careful mineral selection, grinding expertise and high-quality coating, Omya has been able to push the boundary of particle size and moisture adsorption for ground calcium carbonate to new levels. The benefits for formulators extend to easier storage in high humidity conditions, reduced energy and time expenditure during adhesive or sealant production and a reduced dependency on chemical moisture scavengers, such as VTMO. This approach enables formulators to combine the benefits of traditional low moisture ground calcium carbonate with those of reinforcing fillers, such as improved mechanical properties and a reduced need for rheological modifiers. Noon to 1:00 p.m. TUESDAY GENERAL SESSION LUNCH & KEYNOTE Grand Ballroom, 2nd Floor STICKING WITH SCIENCE! THE NEED FOR STEM ADVOCACY Jayshree Seth, Corporate Scientist and Chief Science Advocate, 3M Company Science matters to us - at 3M we care about science. We wanted to understand the public’s perception around science, so we conducted a global third-party study called the ‘3M State of Science Index’ and what we found is that science is largely underappreciated, invisible or taken-for-granted. People don’t seem to understand or acknowledge the role of science in their daily lives but have huge expectations for what it should deliver in the future. It is clear science needs advocates, especially since 4 out of 10 surveyed said that if science didn’t exist their lives wouldn’t be any different! It is also apparent that the relationship of science with people is complex. In fact, 85% of people surveyed admit they know little to nothing about science, but the same percent wish they knew more. Moreover, 87% of the global community believes we need science to solve the world’s problems. Nearly 60% of people interested in science say that they believe scientific advancements will benefit future generations. It was also interesting and perhaps not surprising to see that women trail men in the positive sentiment of science and almost 60% view scientists as elitists. Jayshree was appointed as 3M’s first-ever Chief Science Advocate and she will be sharing the results of this multi-year survey, what 3M is doing about it, and a call for action for all of us.

AFTERNOON EDUCATION SESSIONS

AN INDUSTRY PANEL: SUPPLY AND DEMAND DURING VOLATILE TIMES

Session Chair: Rob Hubbard, Vice President & CFO, H.B. Fuller Waldorf Room, 3rd Floor During the past two years, our industry has experienced extraordinary and unprecedented events. Demand dropped in Q2 2020 due to COVID resulting in a reduction in specialty chemical output and a run-down of inventory levels; then roared back in the second half of 2020 behind strong economic recoveries around the globe. Demand quickly outpaced supply for many raw materials used in our industry. These market conditions were exacerbated in February 2021 by the cold weather event in Texas, creating tight-to-short raw material markets. The demand spike coupled with low inventory, labor shortages, natural disasters, logistics challenges, and fragile infrastructure have created the perfect storm of volatility in our adhesive industry. These conditions are expected to persist at least through 2022. In this session, you’ll hear from experts throughout the supply chain discuss their perspective on how to best manage supplier relationships during volatile demand, the impact of the inflationary environment on their business, how to handle freight disruption, and keys to working through a tough labor market. Moderator: Rob Hubbard, Vice President & CFO, H.B. Fuller Panelists: • Mark Ericson, Vice President, Supply Chain, Meridian Adhesives Group • Dale McClung, Vice President, Supply Chain Services, CLX Logistics • Nirel Inman, Co-President, Chicago Glue & Machine • Stacy Jordahl, Vice President, Industrial Specialties Business, Ingevity • Stuart Jenkinson, Vice President, Global Sales, H.B. APPLICATIONS IN BUILDING CONSTRUCTION

Session Chair: Mick Funderburg, Principal Technical Representative, Eastman Chemical Company Williford Room B, 3rd Floor 1:15 to 1:40 p.m. FAST CURING JOINT SEALANTS FOR FLOOR JOINTS, PAVEMENTS, ROADS AND CONNECTION JOINTS TO TRAM TRACKS Ralf Heinzmann, Global Technical Manager, Sika Deutschland GmbH The right combination of properties makes polyurethane sealants the optimal choice for high demanding applications such as floor and facade joints and even for joints that are fully immersed in water or where the sealant is exposed to aggressive chemicals like in sewage treatment or bio-gas plants. 1:40 to 2:05 p.m. ADHESIVE CHALLENGES FOR FLOOR COVERING AND CONCRETE SUB FLOOR INSTALLATION Raj Hariharan, Senior Group Leader, Mapei Corporation USA Flooring manufacturers produce a variety of floor coverings such carpet tiles, modular carpets, wood flooring and resilient flooring, which includes luxury vinyl tile and plank, Linoleum, etc. A variety of adhesives such as pressure sensitive adhesives (PSA), polyurethane, epoxy and modular are required for flooring installation and it depends on the type of floor covering and sub floor as well. When flooring is installed on sub concrete floors, following proper preparation procedures before flooring installation is a primary requirement. Due to compact construction schedules, many times these procedures are overlooked and in such cases floor moisture becomes a billion-dollar problem for commercial and residential establishments. Moisture penetration through concrete flooring can cause subsequent problems to structure above such as flooring and building system. Most significant is health related issues due to mold, mildew and rotting problems. In this presentation an introduction to type/class of adhesives that are used for different floor covering will be presented. Moisture issues through case study will be illustrated. Further moisture mediation remedies such as coatings/sealants will also be discussed.

attractive and available assets. What can be done to maximize a buyer’s chance of success? What are some of the best practices used by successful consolidators?

from it. Learn how to leverage external innovations to create significant value in new or existing product lines.

10:50 to 11:10 a.m. PERSPECTIVES ON VALUATION IN M&A TRANSACTIONS Andy Hinz, Managing Director, Grace Matthews, Inc. This presentation highlights the increasing M&A valuations across the adhesives, sealants, and coatings industry and discusses rationale for strategic buyers to pay premium valuation multiples in an acquisition. Using the perspective of a seller, the presentation also shares insights on how adequately framing synergy potential to buyers can drive incremental value in a sale process. The discussion concludes with several summary considerations for both sellers and buyers in M&A transactions.

11:40 a.m. to 12:05 p.m. NEXT GENERATION ADHESIVES FOR PERSONALIZED DOSAGE PHARMACEUTICALS USING BINDER JETTING ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING Emily Wilts, Polymer Scientist, Exponent Incorrect medication dosing accounts for 75-85% of all adverse side-effects, even some reactions resulting in death. Binder jetting AM has potential for fabrication of customized dosage tablets, but the resulting parts lack in strength due to solely relying on the binder to produce structural integrity. To investigate and ameliorate these limitations, a comprehensive study of linear, 4-arm star, and graft poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) as polymeric binders for binder jetting additive manufacturing increased tablet compression strength enabling the opportunity for controlled release profiles.

11:15 to 11:35 a.m. VALUATION AND INTEGRATION LESSONS FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF A FINANCIAL BUYER Brian Orkin, Partner, Arsenal Capital Financial buyers, generally, may focus on different criteria or valuation metrics than strategic/trade buyers. There are also many approaches to creating these returns – some financial buyers are oriented more towards “value” and are looking to buy low and sell high. Some buyers are looking more towards “growth” and are looking at hitting their value by growing EBITDA exponentially, and in doing so getting a higher multiple on exit than on entry. So you are lucky enough to buy an Adhesives & Sealants company, what then? How do you go about integrating it into and existing company? And then to maximize value for an Adhesives & Sealants Company, financial buyers will try to create a “strategically important” or “must have” company. Such an asset typically will provide the next acquirer (whether strategic or financial) with outsized growth, new technology or market access, margin enhancement, scale or cash flow. If the company offers prospective buyers one or more of the above, the selling financial investor should be rewarded by the market. 11:40 a.m. to Noon MANAGING THE INTEGRATION OF A TRANSFORMATIONAL ACQUISITION Ted Clark, Chief Operating Officer, H.B. Fuller This presentation provides an in-depth look at H.B. Fuller’s acquisition and subsequent integration of Royal Adhesives and Sealants in 2017. Within the PET recycling industry, pressure sensitive labels (PSLs) are widely considered to be an impedance towards closed loop, bottle to bottle (B2B) recycling due to contamination of the PET from the adhesive and label. This generally results in a downgrading of the recycled PET (rPET) which limits its downstream value. While ‘wash off-able’ PSL solutions are available, many of these products suffer from either a lack of adhesion or wash-off robustness. Avery Dennison is working towards understanding how systematic adhesive design can lead to PSLs solutions that enable label wash off in today’s PET recycling streams. This presentation will discuss the challenges with marrying a pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) to current recycling processes while enhancing both wash off and adhesion performance. 2:10 to 2:35 p.m. POLYCHLOROPRENE BASED CONTACT ADHESIVES WITH SUSTAINABLE AND SAFER SOLVENTS Rainer Kalkofen, Technical Manager/Technical Service and Application Development, ARLANXEO Deutschland GmbH Strength and easy handling make solvent borne polychloroprene based contact adhesives indispensable. However, typical solvents are raw oil based and bear health risks. This talk shows how to formulate these adhesives with sustainable solvents and with solvents that are no health risk to the operator.
