tanding on a little bridge on holiday in Devon, I looked at Reuben, my 23-month-old son, running around excitedly with Isaac, his big brother, and I thought to myself, ‘I’m so lucky. Life doesn’t get any better than this.’ It was August 2012, and the most idyllic of days. The next morning, though, Reuben stumbled in the living room and banged his head. Mike and I rushed him to A&E, where a CT scan revealed he was suffering from an extremely rare and aggressive brain tumour. The horror was unimaginable. Reuben was rushed into surgery to relieve the swelling on his brain. His heart stop pped during the operation but he clung on. Two days later, in surgery, his organs started failing and there was nothing the doctors could do. Just one week after his fall, Reuben died in my arms. Saying goodbye and leaving him there was the hardest thing I had ever done. When we got home to see his little shoes in the porch, I fell apart. The only thing that got me through was thinking what we could do in Reuben’s name, so something positive could come out of the tragedy. We registered the name Reuben’s Retreat on Facebook. Our plan was to open a place where families of children with life-limiting illnesses

Getting my first order for £2,000 in 2010 was amazing, even though it meant working around the clock delivering ice cream from the back of an old van. Later that year, I braved Dragons’ Den and won a £65,000 investment from Peter Jones and Duncan Bannatyne, who said my pitch was one of the most polished they’d seen. After that, things went stellar. ecoming a foster carer at just 26 – as a single mum to an eight-year-old – might sound crazy, but I’ve never regretted it. In six years, I’ve looked after 16 children, aged between eight and 18, and it’s the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done. My own childhood in Guyana was difficult, with domestic violence and instability, until my Aunty Muriel brought me to the UK when I was 10. I’d always wanted a family of my own and fell pregnant at 18 but the relationship with Sophia’s

Helping a child blossom is a wonderful thing dad ended when I was 23. Life as a single mum wasn’t easy, but I wanted to give other kids the same love and support my aunty gave me. I knew how one person can change a child’s life. In 2008, I signed up with TACT – the largest fostering and adoption charity in the UK – and began the rigorous vetting process. In early 2009, after endless checks and interviews, I was both ecstatic and petrified to finally be approved. We live in a four-bedroom house so I can have more than one child at any time and I get paid an allowance for each one. There have been ups and downs – some kids have special needs, 16 | GOOD LIVING
some are violent or swearr a lot – but the rewards alway ys outweigh any downsides. One girl had repeatedly ru un away from every other fosster home, but she stayed with h me for a whole year. Then there was a 16-year-old bo oy who was so nervous, he wouldn’t even walk to the e bus stop alone. Two yearss later, he was brimming with self-confidence. At the moment, we’v ve got a boy of 11 who has been with us for three years. He has complex emotional needs and, in the beginning, wass very destructive, lashing out and breaking things. It was hard for Sophia to witness but he’s so mucch calmer now. She considerss him a brother and we couldn’t imagine life witho out him. It can’t have been eassy for Sophia to share her mum and her home, but she’s never complained and hass grown into a compassiona ate young woman. I couldn’t have done it without her. ut for lunch a few months after our daughter Eva was born, my husband David pointed out a lump on my neck. It was bigger than a golf ball but in the fog of caring for a newborn and Ronnie, I hadn’t noticed it. I saw our GP who referred me to Lincoln Hospital. Tests proved inconclusive but, eight months later, I had the lump removed and a nurse rang to tell me it was malignant. Sitting in the kitchen, feeding Eva, I froze as the nurse explained I had thyroid cancer and would need to have my thyroid – a gland in the neck that makes hormones – removed. Over the next few days, David and I stumbled around in a daze. I couldn’t bear the thought of leaving funny, loving Ronnie and little Eva, who was only 10 months old. In July 2015, I had my thyroid removed followed by radioactive treatment to kill any remaining cancer cells. Even back home, I wasn’t allowed to hug my family for a week. TIP This crumb mix works brilliantly on individual portions of salmon and is also delicious on white fish
until coated – take care not to break up the almond flakes. 2 Line a baking tray with baking paper. Pat the salmon dry with kitchen roll and place the fish skin-side down on the tray. Brush on the mustard, then press the crumb mixture on top. 3 Cook for 25 mins in the oven, on the shelf under the potato stacks, or until the crust is golden and the fish is just cooked through. Garnish with lemon slices and chives.

● Scissors ● Sticky tape ● Garden wire ● Craft glue ● Crêpe paper ● Ribbon 1 Bend a 90cm length of wire into a hoop and secure the ends with sticky tape. Do the same with a 60cm length of wire to make a smaller hoop. Bend 2 x 45cm lengths of wire into rabbit-ear shapes. 2 Attach all four shapes together securely with sticky tape to create a rabbit-shaped frame. Tightly bind together with strips of crêpe paper. 3 Cut 4cm x 70cm strips of crêpe paper, fold each into three lengthways, twist the middle a bit to strengthen, then tie to the frame. Repeat until frame is covered. 4 Roll a long strip of white crêpe paper into a bunny tail and glue in place. Add a ribbon bow at the neck. 60 | ASDA.COM/GROCERIES

YOU’LL NEED ● Pencil ● Scissors ● Card ● Craft glue ● Thick wool ● Dental floss ● Scraps of felt ● Cotton wool ball 1 Draw 2 x 6cm circles on card and cut
out. Cut a 2.5cm circle out of each card’s centre for doughnut-shaped templates. Repeat for 2 smaller templates, 4cm diameter with 1.5cm holes in centre. 2 To make a pompom for the bunny or
chick’s body, put the 2 large templates together to create a double ring. Wrap the yarn around the outer part of the double ring until covered completely. 3 Cut the yarn between the 2 cardboard rings, taking care not to pull the cut strands. Ease open the rings, place a piece of floss between them and tie around the wool securely. Remove the rings and fluff up the pompom. 4 Using the smaller templates, repeat steps 2 and 3 to make a little pompom for the bunny’s/chick’s head. 5 Stick the large (body) and small (head) pompoms together with craft glue and leave until completely dry.

Hanging eggs strike a chord with pretty pastel prints
YOU’LL NEED
● Pencil ● Scissors ● Glue stick ● Card ● Embroidery thread ● Ribbon ● Plain and patterned craft paper 1 Fold a piece of card in half. Draw half an egg shape that starts and ends on the fold line. Cut along the pencil line through both layers of card. Unfold to give an egg shape. 2 Use this template to cut out a piece of craft paper. Repeat until
you have 4 plain paper eggs and 4 patterned eggs. Fold each one in half, wrong side out and place on a work surface in a plain/ pattern/plain/sequence. 3 Spread glue stick over one half of an egg shape. Align it to the other half of a second egg and press to attach. Continue joining egg shapes, but don’t glue the last segment. 4 Lay a loop of embroidery thread along the central crease of the last segment. Spread glue over one half of the egg and the loop, and sandwich the two halves together. Allow to dry before hanging.
1 Pierce the top and bottom of an egg with the needle. Push the needle through one of the holes, and swirl it around inside the egg to break up the yolk. Working over a bowl, put the straw over one of the holes and blow until all the contents have come out. Repeat for the rest of the eggs. Rinse out each egg with water and allow to dry overnight. 2 Paint the hollow eggs. Allow to dry. You may need two or three coats of paint. 3 Thread the darning needle with a length of narrow ribbon and knot the ends securely. Conceal the knot with a bow made from wide ribbon. Using the needle, pass the double ribbon through a bead, then a painted egg, then another bead and so on until all beads and eggs have been threaded onto the ribbon. 4 Remove the darning needle and tie together the ends of the ribbon securely. Pass another length of wide ribbon through the narrow ribbon loop and conceal the knot with a bow.
Cobweb eggs
Make the party pop with these woven wonders. Who knows what’s inside…
YOU’LL NEED
● PVA glue ● Balloons ● Embroidery thread 1 In a large, shallow bowl, mix a glue solution
of 1 part PVA to 1 part water. Gradually add the embroidery thread to the solution and swirl to soak through. 2 Partly inflate a balloon to the size you want and hold over the bowl. Start winding the thread around the balloon, turning the balloon as you go. Continue until you’ve made a web. 3 Hang the egg to dry, wiping away any droplets of glue that collect at the base. After 48hrs, burst the balloon and remove through the web. 4 Cut a small hole in the egg if you want to fill it with sweets, or treats of your choice.

Got a fridge full of spring lamb and double cream? No room left for beverages? Chill. There’ll be no warm wine this Easter with our tips Fill a bowl with ice and cold water – liquid covers more of the bottles than ice alone ever can. Add a couple of tablespoons of table salt – the salt lowers the temperature at which liquid will freeze. That’s where the science bit comes in – trust us. Stir it all around and leave for a few minutes – chilled drinks, guaranteed. El vino did flow…

Is the th heerrree a way to keep fo foo oo od d fre frreesssh h for longer? We waste (wait for it) a colossal 7m tonnes of food a year. But with a few storage tweaks, you can lengthen the life of your groceries, reduce landfill, and save on food bills and those stinky black bags. ● Prepacked salad leaves wilt because moisture gets trapped in the plastic, so wrap any leftover leaves in kitchen roll and refrigerate. ● Most berries (strawberries excluded) freeze and defrost well. Wash, dry and separate each berry onto a flat surface in the freezer for 20-30 mins.
Once frozen individually, store in a freezer bag. ● Eggs aren’t refrigerated in store because the temperature is constant, but at home, it’s best to keep eggs in the fridge, away from other foods. ● Keep mushrooms in a paper bag, not plastic. If you don’t have a paper bag, use kitchen roll. ● Don’t store tomatoes in the fridge. (They thrive in hot Mediterranean countries, don’t forget!) Keep away from other fruits, somewhere warm or near natural light,
such as on a windowsill. ● Remember, food should not be eaten past its ‘use by’ date, but it can be eaten or frozen right up to it. For more info and advice, visit lovefoodhatewaste.com

How often should I get my blood pressure checked?
Twice a year if you have no underlying conditions, or more regularly if you suffer from high or low blood pressure. Also, your blood pressure is likely to increase as you get older. We’re supporting Public Health England’s ‘One You’ campaign** by running free blood pressure checks for customers in all of our 255 pharmacy stores†. The pharmacies also carry a selection of blood pressure monitors, so you can take control of your health at home. It’s important to know your blood pressure numbers, so ask about an appointment next time you’re in store, and, if needed, get professional advice from our pharmacists on lifestyle changes that can help. EVERY
DELICIOUS ALMOND We think a delicious almond drink starts with delicious almonds. So we grow our own. In fact, we’re the only almond drink that does. Ours come from California, where our farmers have been lovingly growing them since 1910. Once ripe, we use them to make Blue Diamond Almond Breeze® that’s dairy free, full of goodness and yes, you guessed it, absolutely delicious.

‘I’m cutting off all my hair for charity’ Nicola Lewis, 29, is a radiographer who lives in Nantgarw, Wales with her husband David, 31, and their daughter Olivia, six months. She says: ‘Working as a radiographer at the Velindre Cancer Centre in Cardiff, and witnessing what kids battling this killer disease have to face every day, I wanted to do something to help. ‘I’ve had long hair ever since I can remember but I've decided to donate it to the Little Princess Trust, a charity that provides wigs to children who lose their hair through cancer treatment. ‘Before I became a mum last year, I used to braid, plait and curl my hair – my long locks were my crowning glory. I don’t have time to style my hair now but the very thought of them taking off more than an inch freaks
before
me out. The only people I’ve confided in apart from my husband are my parents, who sounded hesitant and asked whether I was sure – way to fill a girl with confidence!' Her verdict: ‘When Andrew hacked off my plait, I actually expected to feel physical pain, but I couldn't be happier with this sleek, sophisticated bob that, quite literally, feels like a weight off my shoulders. And I love the chocolate highlights. ‘The charity needs seven inches and I can give them 14. Knowing how much this will mean to a child who’s undergone chemotherapy, I don’t miss my hair at all.’

Nicola needs products to smooth her sleek bob, as well as a lightweight conditioner to hydrate her hair without weighing it down. Deanna Gush, 42, runs her own marketing company and lives in Coventry with her husband Greg, 37, and their sons Jack, four, and Finn, two. She says: ‘I used to be a real colour chameleon when it came to my hair, experimenting with blonde, purple and even jet black during a goth stage I went through in my 20s. I’d fork out on expensive salons and was never afraid to take style risks. ‘When I had my son, Jack, in 2011, I stopped investing so much in my appearance, including clothes and haircuts. I felt guilty splashing out on a trip to the hairdressers, which seemed like a luxury I could go without. ‘But your hair is a real statement of your identity and, at the moment, mine is screaming out “bedraggled mum”! I look drab and washed out, and am craving a colour injection. I can’t remember the last time I had my dry and straggly hair cut and it’s in desperate need of a good chop. Still, as a busy mum of two now, I can’t afford too much off the length, as I don't have time to style it every day.’ Her verdict: ‘I have to say it’s not what I was expecting. I was thinking blonde highlights and these bright copper hues were never on my radar. But they really do suit me. It’s quite Christina Hendricks from Mad Men. I feel like Deanna’s back and the kids have a cool new mum!’
These bright copper hues suit me – quite Christina Hendricks from Mad Men
,
Safeguard your shade
To keep her red locks looking bright and glossy, Deanna needs products with a UV filter that shield hair from colour-fading sun rays. It’s also important to use a conditioning mask once a week to nourish dyed hair. Try L’Oréal Elvive Extraordinary Oil, £9.99 (100ml) and Andrew Barton Protect My Colour Treatment Mask, was £4, now £2.50* (300ml).

‘Make me look 10 years younger!’ Monika Montague-Porter, 63, is an oil painter and lives in York with her husband Mark, 52. She says: ‘In my youth I was known for my thick, lustrous, chestnut-brown hair. At the age of 16, I destroyed it after discovering peroxide powder. It was the swinging ’60s and the bright blonde looked trendy teamed with my white PVC boots. ‘I used to enjoy following fashion but I’m a hippy at heart and I believe it’s what’s on the inside that counts. I know my second husband, Mark, who I met in 1999, would love me even if I was bald! Over the past decade, I’ve tried to channel Goldie Hawn’s feathered golden style by covering up the grey with bleach – but it hasn’t done my hair any favours. ‘Looking at my reflection in the mirror today, I feel ashamed of how I’ve let myself go. Overnight, roots
before
can suddenly become glaringly obvious and my shabby, thirsty barnet sadly looks like a witch’s mop. ‘I’m happy to leave myself in Andrew’s trusty hands – all I ask of him is that he wind back the clock and make me look 10 years younger. I may be a grandmother of two but I’m not ready to admit defeat in the looks department yet!’ Her verdict: ‘I thought I’d miss the blonde but this soft warm brown is gorgeous. Everyone keeps commenting on how it accentuates my green eyes and skin tone – and it’s so soft and shiny to touch. I feel like a new woman – and Mark says he has a stunning new wifey!’

MAKE GARDENING FUN WITH THESE SOWING AND GROWING ACTIVITIES FOR KIDS!
M
ore than two million children are now gardening at school but the horticultural adventures don’t have to stop there. Kids love playing with compost, water and generally getting messy – plus there’s a real sense of achievement when they have their own patch or pots to look
after. You don’t even need a garden with these simple ideas for planting buckets or other containers. Get them a scrapbook, too, so they can paste in their empty seed packets, take pictures of their progress and record how quickly and tall everything grows. Above all, have fun!
TOP TIP
TOP TIP
Grow fun nibbles with edible bright flowers such as Little Growers Nasturtium Jeepers Creepers, £1.49 or 3 for £4 – add to salads or sandwiches*
MOBILE GARDEN
Add a layer of gravel to stop muddy water splashing veg and herb leaves, so they are not too dirty when you snip them off
A wheelbarrow can create a great garden of flowers or veggies that kids can personalize with paper windmills, flags or little signs. 1 Give kids a pen to mark the base
MINIATURE BUCKET GARDEN Encourage little ones to create their own mini garden in a fun bucket. 1 Make about 10 drainage
holes in the base of the bucket, explaining how holes help water drain away so the roots don’t get waterlogged. 2 Get your kids to fill their bucket with potting compost up to 2-3cm
from the top, pressing down as they go. 3 Show them how to scatter seeds over the top – pour from the pack into their hand first, so they don’t tip out the lot in one go. Sprinkle over compost until the seeds are just covered. Encourage pollination by growing bee-friendly flowers such as Little Growers Poached
Woodland’s steel bucket, £2.50
Egg Flower Sunny Side Up, £1.49 or 3 for £4. 4 Tell them to water their bucket well and leave outside in a sunny place. Set a time every day for them to check on their seeds or water if need be. 5 As the seeds grow, show kids how to thin out the seedlings so there’s at least 10cm between each.
of a wheelbarrow every 10cm so that you can make drainage holes in it. Then let them fill it with compost. 2 Sow a selection of vegetable seeds, such as radishes, lettuces and carrots, according to the pack instructions. Try Little Growers Carrot, Nantes 2 seeds, £1.49 or 3 for £4. 3 For an instant garden any time of year, plant small pots of herb plants like thyme, chives or parsley. Show your kids how to make holes in the compost with a trowel, take the herb out of its pot, put in the hole and firm the compost around it. ASDA.COM | 91

SUNFLOWER ALLEY Let kids plant rows of nodding sunflowers. A chart will keep track of how tall they grow! 1 Indoors, you’ll need
20 small pots filled with compost. Get the kids to make a 2cm-deep hole with their finger. Drop in a sunflower seed and cover with compost. Try Little Growers
Put your finger deep into the soil. If it doesn’t feel damp, your plants will be thirsty, so keep them well watered!
Sunflower Sunshine Giant, £1.49 or 3 for £4. Sit the pots on a sunny windowsill, then water. 2 When the risk of frost has passed, arm the kids with a tape measure and get out in the garden. Mark out two rows, 1m apart, in a sunny spot. Dig small holes and plant the sunflowers every
40cm along each row. 3 When the stalks are about 1m tall, push in a bamboo cane next to each one and tie together in a figureof-eight knot to give them support.
CLIMBING BEAN WIGWAM
Once the beans have climbed up the frame, it creates a leafy den to hide in. 1 Take four to six small compost-filled
pots and let the kids plant a single bean 3cm deep in each. Place the pots on a sunny windowsill and water regularly – they should see shoots within days. Try Little Growers Runner Bean Scarlet Emperor, £1.49 or 3 for £4. 2 By the end of May, they can plant the be eans outside. Help the kids make the ‘w wigwam’ by pushing tall bamboo canes

into the ground in a circle, leaving a larger gap between two of the canes to make an entrance. Do supervise this stage as bamboo can be sharp. 3 Next, show the kids how to carefully remove the bean seedlings from their pots and plant one at the base of each cane, gently wrapping the shoot around the cane to encourage climbing. Fill up a watering can and give them a really good watering. Within a few weeks, the beans should have raced to the top of the poles to create the bean wigwam!

DOES YOUR CHILD NEED GLASSES? HERE ARE SIGNS TO LOOK OUT FOR
He wears: black/ blue Kids Vision frames*. She wears: purple Disney Princess frames**
I
spy with my little eye… what are the clues that your child might need an eye test? Claire Slade, Superintendent Optometrist at Asda, explains: ‘If your child isn’t keen to read; rubs their eyes while looking at books; or loses their place when reading, they could have a problem with their vision,’ she says. ‘Other signs include headaches, and one eye turning in or out – even if temp porarily y.’ The earlier a problem is detected, the better the chances are of getting it treated. ‘Whether or not you suspect something’s wrong, your child is never too young to have their
eyess examined at an opticians,’ says Claire. ‘Parents should bring child dren in for an eye test before they y start school, at four to five yearrs old. And because many scho ools no longer offer free eye testing, it’s even more important to orrganise a check-up. It doesn’t mattter if your child can’t read lette ers – the optometrist will use othe er tests to test for short- or long-sightedness or astigmatism, whicch causes blurred vision.’ Th he good news is that all child dren under the age of 16 get free eye tests and glasses with an NHS voucher – so why not go along to your local Asda Optician for a check-up?

‘Can I live in the house please?’ OUR PET EX XPERT, VET ZARA BOLAND, GIVES US THE LOWDOWN ON DOMEST TICATED RABBITS
T
his Easter, you may have adopted d your first bunny, but before you set up camp outside, consider sharin ng your pad with your pet. Many breeds are now being kept indoors by owners kee en to develop a more rewarding relationship with their furry friend. You can keep an n eye on them more easily and, with extra sp pace to roam, they can be happier and healtthier. Bunnies can be timid by nature, but with a bit of TLC, you’ll soon see them jump ping onto your lap for a treat.
Happy bunny
First you must ‘bunny-proof’ your hou use. It’s natural for rabbits, especially youn ng ones, to chew on furniture and deadly electtrical cords that must be encased in strong plastic tubing. Top hay with a bunny-ssized

portion of Simply Nibbles Dandelion Garden, £2 (100g), every day to help grind down its teeth. Rabbits are clean animals with odourless fur, and can be litter trained (yes, really). You don’t need a hutch indoors, but start off by enclosing part of a room and placing the litter box in the corner. As soon as your pet uses its toilet consistently, you can let it roam the house. Hormones cause rabbits to ‘mark territory’, so neutering as early as possible will reduce the risk of pesky mishaps. Giving them a seccure area of the house to call their own will help, as will providing somewhere e for them to hide, such as a cardboard box. Bob Martin My Little Friend Mead dow Hay, £2, makes a soft, cosy bed.
Pet pals
Bunnies can get along with cats, but dogss should be trained to respond to command ds before being trusted with a freerunning rabbit. Rabbits love company but are less likely to fight with their own kind if they are neutered adults of the opposite sex. Reward good behaviour with Rotastak Nature’ss Nibbles, £1, but never repriman nd your rabbit, as it won’t know what it’s done wrong. Some rescue rabb bits find being indoors stressful if they were used to living outside, so always seek advice from your vet.

very night, Lindsey Fish, 32, falls into bed d completely exhausted d, but her well-earned sleep eludes her. Throughout the e day she feels groggy and worries she’s not doing he er best as a businesswoman or mum to two-year-old Molly. Lindsey, who lives in Hertfordshire with partnerr Andrew, 36, finds it difficu ult to switch off from running her events company from home, often working on he er computer until 2am. In bed d her mind whirrs with stresss. So why can’t she, and th he one in three people in the UK who suffer from insomnia**, enjoy blissful, uninterrupte ed shut-eye? Sleep expert Dr Neil Stanley gave Lindsey tips to try for better slumbe er. This is her three-week diarry. 102 | ASDA.COM
I’m shattered after another night of little sleep. Black bags under my red eyes make me look a fright when I drop Molly off at childcare. My frazzled brain struggles to remember everything on my to-do list yet, frustratingly, my mind was racing with ideas until 4am. Coffee is my crutch. At 3pm, I’m racked with guilt for wishing Molly could stay at childcare longer. Back home, she wants to play hide and seek but I feel so drained, I bribe her with a DVD. I explain my problems to Dr Stanley and the battle against insomnia begins.
SLEEP: 2 HOURS
Day 2
Andrew wakes me at 8am. Work is crazy and, without a caffeine fix, I’m too weary to tackle my inbox. Switching to mummy mode when Molly comes home squeezes all the strength I have. My get-upand-go has got-up-and-
gon ne. I put Dr Stanley’s tips in place by banning all pho ones and laptops from the bedroom. He explained that blue screen lights keep us alert and block a good nigh ht’s sleep. I log off at 10pm and read for 45 min nutes to switch off but I can’t resist sneaking out of bed to check my phone...
SLEEP: 4 HOURS
Day 3
Molly wakes me at 4am and, while the little monkey fallss straight back to sleep, I do on’t. All the emails I read befo ore bed churn through my mind. I spend the day batttling fatigue to stay on top of meetings and, at
dinnertime, I snap at Andrew over who should give Molly a bath. Note to self: stop che eating and lock away phone in the evening.
SLEEP: 5 HOURS
Day 6
I can easily plough my way through a glass of wine to wind down after work. Giving up alcohol and drinking two litres of waterr under the doc’ss orders means I’m m not waking up with a raging thirst and I ha ave more zest for the day. I’m m no gym bunny but I’m m trying to exercise, so I ditch the car and walk Molly to childcare. On the way back I buy some earplugs to sh hut off night-

SLEEP RULES 1 No mobiles, tablets or computer screens in the bedroom for at least 45 minutes before bed. 2 Wind down by reading or listening to music. 3 Cut down on caffeine and, if you smoke, stop smoking! 4 If possible, give up alcohol for at least five nights a week and Nice Work If You drink more water to stay hydrated. Can Get It by 5 Don’t eat or drink after 8.30pm Celia Imrie, £7 as the body warms up to burn calories and this hampers sleep. 6 Set your alarm for the same time every morning, including weekends. Day 11
I’m feeling less narky and re-energised without coffee – and increased sleep is helping me feel on top of things. I blitz my emails and whizz around with the vacuum. At 3pm I can’t wait to collect Molly. Supermum m!
SLEEP: 7 HOURS
Day 14
Andrew and I stomp around the park with Molly and, instead of being distracted with work, for once I feel fully present. I laugh as Molly chases the ducks (I left my phone at home on purpose, hurrah!) Friends come for tea and I’m more upbeat instead of stifling yawns – although I’d kill for a glass of prosecco. Dr Stanley explained the importance of winding down before bed. He asked if running a warm bath with candles, then enveloping myself in a fluffy robe before snuggling into a
fresh bed sounded horrible. Of course it doesn’t! So why hav ven’t I been doing it?
Day 21
Had d the best non-alcoholfuellled shut-eye in years afte er a heavenly bath last nigh ht, and am up with the larkk this morning. I even man nage to fire off a work proposal before Molly’s breakfast. Being more productive eases anxiety. The e knackered me is starting to feel quite exhilarated...
No need to trrowel on the concealer tod day as my bags are less puffy y and my eyes are bright nott bloodshot. Andrew is chu uffed with his shiny new wiffe – I’m not as moody and, apparently, look younger! Mollly seems happier too. This new regime is still a work in progress; my insomnia cree eps up on me some nights, but I appreciate now how sma all lifestyle tweaks make a huge difference. I fe eel revved up rather than ru un-down!

MY FOODIE
‘I have five triple shots a day’ GRANTCHESTER’S TV TREASURE TALKS ENERGY HITS, FISH AND GROWING VEG
Who’s your cooking inspiration? My grandmother, Sarah Green was like a Michelin chef. Most of her sons worked down the mines and she cared for them through food, such as freshly baked bread, game like pigeon and goose that she plucked herself and homegrown vegetables. Do you grow your own veg? Yes, and I cook all my meals from scratch most days. Top cooking tip? Bake Yorkshire puddings in a sizzling hot oven with beef dripping and never open the door while they’re cooking. My WHAT A CATCH grandmother told me the batter should look like snot! 106 | GOOD LIVING
What are your guilty pleasures? Wispa chocolate bars. One night I knew there was one in the fridge and I couldn’t sleep until I ate it. I also love Melton Mowbray pork pies with homemade chutney. Best food discovery? I spent eight months working in Thailand two years ago on the drama Strike Back and ate everything from chicken’s feet to spicy ducks’ tongues – which were both divine. Quick weekday supper? I’m a big fan of Rick Stein. I make a delicious dish of his with sea salt prawns, olive oil, sea salt, lemon rind and garlic. Do you diet? I’m on a fitness regime for a TV show at the moment, so sadly my meals consist of grilled fish, chicken

and protein shakes. It’s making me feel a bit edgy! Coffee or a tipple? Coffee. I don’t drink alcohol but I’m a coffee addict. I can get through five triple shots a day. Favourite fish? Haddock. The meat is solid because the fish swims around a lot – unlike cod, which is a sluggish creature and tends to be fluffy and light. How do you cook it? Lightly grilled with lemon juice and salt. Any food coming from the earth or out of the ocean should be kept simple. Dream dinner party guests? Isaac Newton, who gave us the principles of natural philosophy; Billy Connolly, who’s one of the funniest men alive; and Helen Mirren – I’m a massive fan. Restaurant of choice? A beautiful wooden hut on the beach in Northumberland called Crusoes. The fish and chips and bacon sandwiches are exquisite. Favourite snack? I make my own crisps, slicing potatoes really thin, cooking them in really hot lard and then lightly salting them. Anything you avoid eating? Fast food. A good meal takes care and commitment. The last drive-thru I had was out of desperation otherwise I would have passed out at the wheel. What would your last supper be? A classic tomato soup with homemade garlic bread, followed by a turkey dinner with all the trimmings and then Christmas pudding. If I’ve got to go, I’ll go out with a blast!
