business EVER FANCIED BEING YOUR OWN BOSS? MEET THREE WOMEN WHO HAD THE SKILLS AND DETERMINATION TO DO JUST THAT
‘I’m living my dream!’ Katie Craven, 26, from Ribble Valley, Lancashire, was chosen by the Prince’s Trust to design a range for George Home
S
etting up your own business in your 20s isn’t easy – while friends are travelling and having fun, I’m glued to my desk, but I wouldn’t change it for the world. Always creative, I studied fine art at John Moores University in Liverpool. After graduating, I had a few exhibitions and sold paintings but it was never enough to live off, so I worked as a waitress while I figured out what I wanted to do. The answer was designing my own gifts, products and homewares – but I hadn’t a clue where to start. In 2014, a friend mentioned the Prince’s Trust, a charity that helps young people aged 13-30 get into education, training and employment. I got in touch and they were incredible. I went on an intensive four-day course to learn the basics of bookkeeping and marketing and a mentor helped hone my business plan. For the first time ever, I felt empowered and equipped to get started. I spent a few months doing market research, trawling the net to find out what was already on offer and putting out questionnaires to see what customers wanted. Then, my mentor got in touch to tell me about a collaboration between the Prince’s Trust and Asda – a young designer would get the chance to design their own one-off homeware range for the supermarket, with 10% of sales going to the Prince’s Trust. It was an amazing 14 | GOOD LIVING

opportunity, and I decided to apply. After submitting my portfolio, I was shortlisted. When I found out I’d won, I was in total shock. It was a dream come true. With the help of a grant and loan from the Prince’s Trust, over the next three months, I worked with the George Home design team on a range of kitchenware, textiles, furnishings and home accessories with a nautical theme. I almost cried with happiness when I first saw the samples of the pieces I’d designed. After my placement finished, in May 2015, I just had to wait for them to be produced. In the meantime, I started to create my own range of products – tea towels, lampshades, tote bags and other knick-knacks – and built a website. I contacted other designers, who were so helpful, and went to endless art fairs to get my brand out there. My Caspian Collection has just gone on sale at Asda. I’m ecstatic to see it on the shelves!
I almost cried with happiness when I saw the samples of the pieces I’d designed I still work from a studio in the home I share with my boyfriend Billy, 27. Weeks are a blur of designing new products, posting orders, and much more – the admin side of things has been the biggest challenge and cash flow can be erratic, but I feel so lucky. I’m doing what I always wanted to do and living my dream. Katie’s range is available now, in store and online at george.com katiecraven.co.uk

‘We’re changing the world – one macaroon at a time!’ Rosie Ginday, 32, from Birmingham, set up social enterprise Miss Macaroon
S
ome of my first memories are of making samosas with my family – we’re Punjabi and so I know the power food has to bring people together. At 23, I went to culinary college, then got a job as a patisserie chef at Purnell’s, a Michelin-starred restaurant in Birmingham. A year later, I became the pastry chef at the five-star Hyatt Hotel. I loved the buzz but wanted to prioritise helping other people. When I was a teenager, I’d chatted to a homeless guy. He’d gone to uni and led a normal life until his mum died – then he just fell apart and fell through the cracks. I realised we’re all just one bad situation or a few missed pay cheques away from homelessness. So, in 2010, I decided to set up a company selling high-end macaroons that offered training to vulnerable young people. I wanted to change the world, one macaroon at a time! Miss Macaroon launched in 2011 as a social enterprise, with all profits reinvested in the business. Still working full-time, I used my two days off a week to get it off the ground with just £500. I bought the first batch of ingredients, asked my old college if

I could borrow its kitchens, then got a local charity to put forward three young people who had just left care for the pilot training scheme. Slowly, orders started rolling in. In 2012, I left my job to focus on Miss Macaroon. Using a £20,000 match fund grant from Birmingham City Council, I converted an old recording studio into a kitchen – and I now employ four staff. We’ve had 19 trainees so far, and seeing them grow has been the most rewarding thing. One, a guy named Zee, 25, came to us two years ago, unemployed and desperate. He was so eager and quick to learn, I ended up giving him a full-time job. He’s now brimming with confidence and a dab hand at making macaroons. Our turnover soared to £200,000 last year. At times, it’s been tough. I had no business training so I’ve had to learn on my feet. It’s often exhausting, relentless, and stressful but I feel so passionate about what I do. It’s not just about making fancy cakes. In my freezer, I still have the first macaroon Zee ever made – and I’m going to keep it forever as proof that whatever you set your mind to, you can achieve. missmacaroon.co.uk GOOD LIVING | 15

Within a few years, I was earning £500 a week. By then, I’d married my second husband, Nick, 59. He runs a conservatorycleaning business and thankfully, he was able to help with childcare. Then, in 2007, I got a call out of the blue about cleaning a vacant housing association property. The company was so impressed, they invited me for an interview – and I landed a £30,000 contract. I was ecstatic, but the workload was intense. I’d get up each day at 6.30am to clean four houses, often getting home as late as 10pm. Some of the homes were in a terrible state, with rats or revolting bathrooms. Sometimes, I was so busy I’d forget to eat, and I felt guilty about missing school sports days or having to do paperwork on Saturday instead of spending time with the boys. I was determined to keep going but when I got another housing association, contract, I knew I couldn’t manage on

TRIPLE TREAT
Three slices of bread make a more substantial sarnie and allow perfect layering of the flavours. Crunchy toast contrasts with velvety avocado and creamy mayo. The mushrooms have a meaty texture and savoury flavour, and though the peach may seem an unlikely choice, it’s fresh, juicy and balances the richer ingredients. Chilli and black pepper enhance the flavours and add a satisfying tingle of heat. Welcome to the club. ASDAGOODLIVING.CO.UK | 37

Crack 1 egg into another bowl and beat with 1tbsp milk. In a third bowl, mix 30g breadcrumbs, zest 1 lemon and a little pepper. Coat one goujon at a time in flour, dip into the egg, let any excess drip off, then coat
in the breadcrumbs. Warm 200ml vegetable oil on medium in a small frying pan. When a breadcrumb dropped into it starts to sizzle, use tongs to put the goujons in the oil, then fry for 3 mins on each side until golden and cooked through. Halve 2 crusty rolls. Spread a little butter and the mushy peas over the bottom halves, then add 2 goujons, 1tbsp horseradish sauce with chopped parsley and the tops of the rolls. Serve.
A GREAT CATCH
This takes things up a notch, from old-school cod fillet fingers to sophisticated salmon. Crunchy breadcrumbs contrast with flaky, flavourful fish, horseradish cuts through the overall richness and gives a subtle kick, while mushy peas add sweetness and a soft texture. The mint and lemon give a fresh tang. Add a dash of malt vinegar for a real taste of nostalgia.

STEAK YOUR CLAIM
Cooking the steak in a hot pan gives it a charred, caramelised flavour, with bite on the outside and melt-in-the-mouth tenderness on the inside. Half-melting the cheese leaves it gooey like a sauce, and the tangy, salty flavour brings out the beef’s savoury, umami taste. This, in turn, is balanced by the sweetness of the onions, peppers and cherry tomatoes. Toasting the ciabatta adds a crisp-meets-chewy texture, helping to max the mix of flavours.
Sandwich science made simple
The right combination of ingredients will take your sarnie creations to the next level – here’s how it works USE YOUR LOAF For simple fillings, such as ham and cheese, use a soft bread. But moist fillings, such as egg mayo, need a more solid bread, like granary, and toasting helps too. Or why not mix it up with naan, pitta or foccacia? There’s no need to get stuck in a boring butties rut! 40 | ASDAGOODLIVING.CO.UK
SPREAD THE LOVE As well as adding flavour, butter, nut butters, cream cheese or mayo will form a layer that helps to keep fillings from soaking into bread and making your sarnie soggy. Anything with a little oil in it should work – try pesto or houmous for something a bit different.
THE FILL-GOOD FACTOR Fillings are a matter of taste but combos you like in meals will often work in a sandwich. Think flavour and texture – crunchy bacon with tender chicken or hard cheese and juicy tomatoes. But be sure to strike a balance – for instance, ham, cheese and olives could be too salty.
ADDED EXTRAS Little details can make – or, indeed, break – the perfect sandwich. Think how sad a hotdog would be with no onions, or a ploughman’s without pickle. Again, though, it’s down to personal choice, so our golden sandwich rule is… bespoke is best!

Whizz a handful of berries (strawberries, blueberries or raspberries all work well) in a blender with a dollop of yogurt, adding a splash or two of milk (dairy, almond or
soya are all fine) if the mixture is too thick. Pop whole berries or mixed fruit slices into your mould, top up with the berry yogurt, add a stick, then freeze for a few hours. For a tropical flavour, blend mango and papaya, thickened with banana. Or, for a refreshing zing, use lemonade and fruit slices. George Home Ice Lolly Moulds, £3 (12-pack, exclusive to george.com)

There are two Mondays off in May, but will you be ready if the sun puts its Union Jack hat on? ● Give your barbecue a good scrub with hot soapy water to get rid of any mould, mildew and hardened grease. Then heat for at least 15 minutes to burn off any cleaning residues. ● If your gas BBQ has been left uncovered over the winter, check the burners haven’t become blocked with dirt or insects and that the gas pipes aren’t frayed or damaged.
● Barbecues should
always stand on level ground, away from sheds, fences and any overhanging branches. ● Dig out the tongs and kebab skewers, put charcoal, napkins, sauces and sunscreen on your shopping list, then fill your freezer with chicken, sausages, burgers and ribs. And that’s it – you’re BBQ-ready!

Why are ticks a problem? These can transmit Lyme disease, a potentially serious infection, so if your pet’s been in long grass, check its head, ears, legs and body. If you feel a bump it may be a tick – don’t try to remove it yourself, see a vet. What about fleas? They irritate your pet, bite people, and can infest carpets and furniture. If your cat or dog is scratching a lot, comb their coat over white paper and watch for tell-tale black flecks. Tackle them at home with singletreatment Bob Martin Clear Spot On Solution for Cats, £4.48 (50mg), or Bob Martin Clear Spot On Solution for Medium Dogs, £5.48 (134mg). Prep school Pre-tanning, thou shalt shower, shave and exfoliate with St Moriz Advanced Pro Formula Exfoliating Skin Primer, £5 (200ml). Don’t moisturise immediately before applying fake tan as it can stop the colour ingredients working. Instead, smooth Vaseline Intensive Care Aloe Soothe Lotion, £3.29 (200ml), over your elbows, knuckles, wrists, knees, ankles and toes (the dry areas that ‘grab’ tan, creating that orange, wrinkly effect).
Gloves on! Hands that look like they’ve been tangoed are never a good look. That’s why we love the nspa Pampering Tanning Mitt, £1.50.
Add Asda Self Tan Mousse, £4 (150ml), to your mitt, scrunch it up to spread the tan, then work onto the skin in sweeping motions. Do legs, then tummy, arms, neck, back, feet and hands. The colour you apply shows where you’ve put product. This will wash off eight hours later to reveal a natural-looking glow. Don’t overload the mitt – less is more for that Majorca-kinda-tan.

SHAPE UP FOR SUMMER WITH OUR 28-DAY EATING PLAN, PLUS TRAINING TIPS AND MOTIVATION FROM 'THE BODY COACH'
Turn over to get started. Ready, aim, fitness! GOOD LIVING | 77
GOOD LIVING’S
Ins nsi siid dee & Out d Ou ut Pla lan an STICK TO OUR SUPER-SIMPLE FOOD PLAN, PLUS EXERCISE TIPS FROM JOE WICKS TO GET IN SHAPE THIS MAY… If you want to shift a few pounds for the summer, or you’re simply looking to adopt a healthy eating plan, we’ve devised a four-week menu that’s simple to follow. Our Inside & Out Plan is based on meals and snacks that have all the nutrition you need, and uses the natural power of food to help you feel great on the inside and look your very best on the outside. Make it your goal to complete between the two bank holidays in May, and you could lose up to 2lb a week. Getting active can help you to max the benefits, so we’ve enlisted mighty motivational personal trainer Joe Wicks to get you started. Turn over for his buns-of-steel exercise advice!
The food plan
Devised by dietician Nigel Denby, the menu consists of a carefully selected balance of wholesome food. ‘It’s packed with fruit and veg containing a wide variety of vitamins and minerals,’ he says. ‘It also contains specific proteins that aid growth and repair of cells, plus the right balance of slow-release carbohydrates – low GI (glycaemic index) foods – and essential fatty acids to keep up your energy levels.’ Start by following the 28-day golden rules and week 1 healthy meal plan, then look online for the next seven-day plan. After that, mix and match from both menus – just stick to one breakfast, lunch and dinner plus two snacks per day. It’s not just a diet – it’s a healthy way to eat for life, so make it a part of your daily routine. Go on, what are you waiting for? 78 | GOOD LIVING
Let ’s go!
Getting started: the 28-day golden rules
1
No coffee, tea or sugary canned drinks – only water, herb and fruit tea or very diluted fruit juice is allowed. We recommend up to eight glasses every single day. If you want to drink alcohol, stick to dry white wine. More importantly, allow yourself only a couple of glasses each week. No added salt or sugar. We know it’s tasty, but sadly, it’s got to go. You’ll thank us eventually! Oils and spreads are high in fat and should make up no more than 1% of your energy intake. Strike the right balance at lunch and dinner. First, fill half your plate with veg or salad. Then fill two-thirds of the other side with starchy carbs, and the rest with protein and dairy. Be portion-size savvy. Use our menu as a guide and check packaging for suggested servings as well as info on ingredients. Plan ahead. Don’t get caught out being hungry on the run – be sure to take snacks out and about. Eat slowly. The feeling of being satisfied when you eat is actually a delayed reaction – pesky brain! Give it time. Don’t skip any meals or snacks – chances are you’ll reach for junk food later on in the day. Don’t try to lose any more than 1-2lbs (1kg) per week – this is a healthy eating plan and, if you achieve your goals gradually, you’re more likely to keep the weight off for longer. Book in a facial or manicure for Day 28 so you have a reward to look forward to. Treat yo’ self.

Joe Wicks FOLLOW THE PERSONAL TRAINER AND INTERNET SENSATION’S FIVE-POINT PLAN TO GET MOVING
1 PREP STAR
‘My mantra is, “Prep like a boss.” Once you’ve decided to get fit and lean, you need to take time out each week to put in the groundwork. Food is important because, no matter how much you exercise, you can’t out-train a poor diet. It’s essential to shop for the right foods and plan exactly when you’re going to fit in exercise. Prepare as much as you can in advance so that you give yourself the best fighting chance to achieve your goals.’
2 GOAL-KEEPING ‘Set yourself realistic goals. If you’ve never run before, don’t agree to do a marathon in a month’s time! One of the big mistakes people make is to try and do too much. Be realistic with your time and what you can commit to, then focus on that. You might aim to get up at 5am to fit in a four-mile run but, in reality, that snooze button is tempting and you’ll only beat yourself up if you don’t do it.’
80 | ASDA.COM/GROCERIES
HEALTH &
WELLBEING
‘Now for action. High-intensity Interval Training (HIIT) is great because you can smash it and get results in minutes – if you’re new to it, see What is HIIT? (right) to find out how to get started. I recommend 20 minutes two or three times a week. It’s an achievable amount of time that you can fit in by getting up a bit earlier or even in the evening between your favourite TV shows. Incorporate this with something else you enjoy, like swimming, yoga, running or playing football.’
4 PACE YOURSELF
‘Again, take things one step at a time. Set yourself small goals to build up to one big, achievable ambition – that could be walking to work every day or mastering a new sporting skill. It’s hard to stick to your exercise goals if you don’t enjoy your workouts. Quick HIIT sessions are great, but anything that gets you moving is good for you. If you’re enjoying it, you’ll work harder without even realising.’
5 RUN IN THE FAMILY
‘Train with a partner, friend or colleague and you’re less likely to skip a workout. You’ll spur each other on to push harder – a little healthy competition never hurt anyone. It’s important to get kids into exercise when they’re young so it becomes habit and part of everyday life. Doing things together like playing outdoor games – rounders, hide and seek, dodgeball or tag – is great for all the family and will tire everyone out!’
‘Set yourself small goals to build up to one big achievable ambition. Anything that gets you moving is good for you – you’ll work harder without even realising’ Visit ASDAgoodliving. co.uk for more tips to help you stick to our 28-day plan
What is HIIT?
‘I’m a huge fan of High Intensity Interval Training – bursts of intense exercise followed by rest periods, like running full whack on a treadmill for 45 seconds, then resting for 30 seconds and doing repetitions in 20-minute slots. Getting your heart rate up then resting helps the body burn fat quicker. And you don’t need a gym or any equipment. ‘While HIIT principles can be applied to any cardio machine, like a treadmill, exercises – such as star jumps, burpees, sprints and skipping – can be done at home or in the park. A work:rest ratio of 1:2 is most effective. ‘Start with a workout of about five minutes – try 20 seconds of burpees, 40 seconds’ rest; 30 seconds of star jumps, 60 seconds’ rest; 20 seconds of high knees, 40 seconds’ rest; 20 seconds of mountain climbers, 40 seconds’ rest. As the weeks go on, build up to 20 minutes by gradually adding more reps.’ For more about Joe’s HIIT plan and his Shape, Shift & Sustain plan, visit thebodycoach.co.uk

hat one thing would you love to do to change your family’s life for the better? When we put this question to Asda customers as part of our competition to find a cover-star family, by far the biggest response was from parents desperate to get themselves and their kids
fitter. Which is why we chose David Guy and Rachel Manning as our worthy winners. Their entry said their ambition was to do more outdoor activities with the kids this year. The couple, and their six children, are on a mission to get fit. At the ph hotto sh hoott in London,, they’re chatty
and full of energy. But Rachel (from Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk and mum to Courtney, Freddie, Bobbie and Evie) and David (from Burnhamon-Crouch, Essex and dad to Chloe and Jack) admit they’ve let their eating and exercise habits slip since they met two years ago. Workk has sidelined David’s workouts,
Rachel’s given up jogging, and the kids are off their bikes and on their phones and gaming consoles. Here, we talk to the family about their activities and food habits. Plus, nutritionist and personal trainer Tali Spink shares her simple fitness prescriipttions to hellp them kick-start their new w regime.

GOOD LIVING
Rachel, 37
After a day spent looking after my kids I’m frazzled, so I sink into the sofa instead of putting my gym kit on. But the less exercise I do, the less energy I have, and I worry about setting a bad example. When David and I met, he told me I was beautiful, so
them cereal or beans on toast. David stays at my house every weekend and, each fortnight, his two kids, Jack and Chloe, join us. We’ll share a bowl of sweets on Saturday night, but I worry because I’ve read too much sugar can lead to diabetes and obesity. We do need to be more active. At least now it’s lighter after school, the kids jump on the trampoline rather than head straight for their screens. David has dusted off his bike and I’ve started to go to Zumba classes. Next? I’m determined to do a 5k run! FITNess PRESCRIPTION The best way to keep your family fit is to make it fun. Trampolining is an excellent workout and also low impact, so it’s gentle on the knees and other joints. And you could invest in a Zumba Wii game to play together. Tempt the kids into giving veg a go by parboiling then roasting it – it tastes nicer! And always eat breakfast as it can help you to maintain stable blood-sugar levels throughout the day.
I’d put on 2st and weighed 15st – the same as David, who’d put on 7lbs I stopped worrying about my weight and portion sizes. After six months, I’d put on 2st and weighed 15st – the same as David, who’d put on 7lbs. I started jogging three times a week, for 30 minutes, and lost a stone, shrinking from a size 18 to a 14. But six months ago, changes at work meant David had no time for exercise, and without him to spur me on I quit running and my weight hit a plateau. I skip breakfast so by lunch I’m ravenous – I go overboard on pasta. I follow the Slimming World diet, which will often involve eating potatoes and veg for dinner – but finding meals everyone enjoys is hard because my kids are so fussy. I often resort to giving
Jack, 8
Freddie, 12
I’m a good runner. Dad says that it won’t be long beffore I’m faster than him! At school, we do ho ockey and gymnastics, and even if I’m tired before I start, I feel better afterwards. I like burgers and d sausages but I en njoy oranges and grapes, too. I think I’m pretty healthy.
Pizza is my favourite food, butt I want to be a footballer so I need to be healthy. My favourite player is Santos. It’s important to o exercise as otherwise your body stops being able to do stuff. I tried running with Mum last year but I got so tired I had to stop. I want my whole family to be fit because I care about them.
FITNess PRESCRIPTION As Jack has discovered, the more you keep fit, the more you want to keep fit! Exercise helps to increase the levels of feel-good endorphins in your brain and gets your blood pumping, giving you energy. Limit burgers and sausages to once or twice a week and go for lean poultry and meat or meat-free alternatives.
FITNess PRESCRIPTION Football is a brilliant activity for kids – it’s usually free, it’s sociable and it gives them a real sense of achievement. Freddie should keep it up! As for pizza, if you eat a healthy, varied diet 70% of the time, you can factor in the odd treat – so it’s fine for him to enjoy a slice once a week.
Courtney, 16 I’m trying to stick to Mum’s Slimming World meals, and I’ve lost 7lbs. I want to lose more so I can fit into a size 14. I loved modern dance at school, but now I’m at college, my only workout is walking for 30 minutes a day. FITNess PRESCRIPTION Walking – a minimum of 5,000 steps a day – is great exercise and a free smartphone app will help Courtney to keep count. Using the stairs at home for step-ups is a good workout, too. GOOD LIVING | 89

Bobbie, 10
If you’re healthy, you can enjoy life more. I like carrots and sweetcorn – but I like sweets better! At school, we do street dancing, and I love the wind on my face when I go cycling.
Words: Antonia Hoyle. Photographs: Alex James. Illustration: Louise French. Thanks to: Tali Spink @ talispink.com
FITNess PRESCRIPTION Street dancing is a form of gymnastics so it can do wonders for flexibility and strength – and why not make cycling a family thing? For a sweet tooth like Bobbie’s, sprinkle pomegranate seeds or even cinnamon on veg to add flavour and variety.
Chloe, 9
Evie, 4
David, 34
Broccoli and peas are my favourite vegetables, but chips taste good, too! At school, we do tennis and maypole dancing. I was worried when Dad got tired on a walk recently – I want him to stay healthy because I love him.
I have fun dancing to songs from Frozen, jumping on my trampoline and playing ball. I like Coco Pops for breakfast and sandwiches with cheese or chocolate spread for lunch. Sweets and biscuits taste nice, but Mummy says I can’t have them every day, as they’ll give me bad teeth and a tummy-ache!
FITNess PRESCRIPTION As kids grow up, they become more aware of your fitness levels as well as their own. All too often, parents sit with their phones in the park while their kids are crying out for interaction. Try chasing them about – it’s more fun for them and your body will thank you for the extra activity.
FITNess PRESCRIPTION Getting active once a day at Evie’s age will set her up with good habits as she grows up. It’s good to build children’s exercise into play – so ball games and dancing are ideal. Chocolate spread sandwiches are OK for a treat, but cheese or chicken on wholemeal bread would be healthier.
I’m not feeling my best right now. Rachel says I look great but my stomach is developing a podge and I’ve been forced to undo another notch on my belt. I’m dreading middle-age spread. Last year, when Rachel and I were on a fitness drive, I did 45 minutes of cardio and weights five days a week and cycled four miles on the other two days. I felt fantastic and dropped from 15st to 14st. But, since I got a new contract with longer
working hours, I’ve put on 7lbs. I rarely eat breakfast, have a baguette for lunch and try to avoid fast food, but when work takes me away from home, I’ll get through three bottles of beer from the hotel mini-bar due to boredom. When I’m with Rachel I eat her meat and veg meals, but I lack her willpower. When we curl up on the sofa after dinner, I can easily plough through a box of mini-eggs. I’d love to get back on my bike and in the gym – not just to look good, but to be a good role model. I don’t want my kids to be embarrassed by me. FITNess PRESCRIPTION Lifting weights at home can be as effective as the gym. All you need is a pull-up bar, a Swiss ball to sit on and a couple of kettlebells. Use the
I don’t just want to look good, I want to be a good role model to my kids ball as a bench for shoulder and chest presses. Make time for breakfast, limit drinking alcohol to once a week, and swap chocolates for fruit, like blueberries. Focusing on your goals and remembering why you want to achieve them can help if willpower is failing.
Tali says: ‘I love this family’s positive new attitude! Going forward they should eat healthy evening meals together five times a week and save treats – and alcohol – for weekends. And make exercise fun! Simply walking in the park or jumping on that trampoline can be a great bonding activity and doesn’t cost a penny. Their relationships and waistlines will thank them for it.’

e all know how important it is to keep fit and healthy (you’ve obviously already started Good Living’s 28-day challenge, ahem!) and it’s no different for pets. Fat cats and plump pooches are also prone to heart disease, breathing problems, obesity and even depression if they don’t get enough exercise. Pets need to stretch their legs regularly to get rid of energy as well. Without it, they may begin to act up – young ones, in particular, are more likely to develop behavioural issues. So help pets reach their full potential, emotionally and physically, by upping their fitness levels. What’s more, keeping your furry friend at an ideal body weight can extend its lifespan by up to two years*. In human terms, that’s an additional 15 years – hurrah!
Hound stretcher
Encourage your dog to be active by walking or running in the local park – or play fetch with toys in the garden. It’s a fun way to get out into the fresh air and has health benefits such
as reduced blood pressure, a healthy heart and lower stress levels – for you and your pooch.
Cat and mouse
Felines love to chase and leap on anything small that moves, as it triggers their hunting instinct. Set aside a specific playtime every day and encourage your cat to chase a toy or crumpled piece of paper. Cats also enjoy climbing, so it’s worth investing in an indoor cat tree or a tall scratching post as another outlet for pent-up energy.

Super furry animals
Rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters can benefit from a run of the house for a mini workout. Small pets love exploring new environments, but it’s important they have somewhere to hide if unexpectedly spooked – cardboard boxes with doors cut in and open-ended tunnels are good. ‘I love to indulge with Ant and Dec!’
ASHLEY ROBERTS LOVES SAUSAGE SARNIES AND TACOS – NOT SO KEEN ON WALLABY
What’s on your daily menu? Eggs and avocado for breakfast. Lunch is usually butternut squash or sweet potato salad with seeds, nuts and greens, then dinner will be chicken and vegetables. Do you diet? I watch my weight by eating healthily and exercising, but I have treats, too. When I eat badly, I feel disconnected from my body and I don’t like that. Favourite childhood food? I grew up in Arizona so we had a lot of Mexican dishes, like tortillas and taco salad. After school, I’d have a toasted English muffin with peanut butter and 98 | GOOD LIVING
jelly [jam to us in the UK] and a Sprite! Who was your culinary idol? My mum, Peggy, taught ’80s step aerobics and was a big influence influence on me eating well. In America, you’re either having pizza for every meal or eating healthily. Thankfully, I was the latter. Where are you living now? I’m hopping between the UK and the US doing a show for NBC called 1st Look, where I go around trying cool stuff, from fine dining to yoga on a surfboard. Favourite cuisine? Australian – they have really great chefs and restaurants there. Though in the I’m A Celebrity... jungle [Ashley took part in the series back in 2012] the food wasn’t so good – I ate kangaroo penis, crocodile and wallaby.
,
TV presenter and former Pussycat Doll Ashley, 34, divides her time between London and LA, and is an ambassador for mental health charity Mind.
How was the jungle experience? I appreciated food so much afterwards, even basics like salt and pepper. I left with a sense of gratitude and now, every morning, I go through all the things I’m thankful for. Tell us your favourite snacks In the green room at Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway, there are sausage sandwiches, crisps and pizza. When the show’s over, we indulge. It’s Saturday night, after all! Dream dinner party guests? Goldie Hawn – I’ve loved her since I saw the film Overboard. Also, actor Paul Rudd, because he’d make me laugh, and Prince could serenade us while we ate. The best dinner parties are with the people you love, though, like my friends Laura Whitmore and Kimberly Wyatt. Laura’s a great guest because she always brings wine! She’s good in the kitchen, too. Do you have a hangover cure? Give me a burrito and nachos and I’m happy. I also love the woodfire pizzas at Homeslice in Covent Garden. If I’m going big, I’ll have a chocolate brownie or a warm cookie. Any dinner date disasters? I once spilled wine on a nice white shirt. I don’t know why I miss my mouth every time I try to drink something! Top takeaway treat? Turkish food from Fez Mangal in Notting Hill, London. Lots of houmous, falafel, tabbouleh and fresh pitta bread. Number one restaurant? Xiao Bao Biscuit in Charleston, South Carolina, which serves Asian comfort food in an old converted gas station. One dish, okonomiyaki – candied pork on a cabbage pancake topped with a fried egg – is next level! mind.org.uk
