Our food editor Gregor McMaster is embracing spring with the lowdown on seasonal spuds, Free From dishes and fab new fizz!

sovereign spuds You know summer’s almost here when supper is served with a bowlful of steaminghot Jersey Royal potatoes topped with melted butter and fresh mint. These kidney-shaped new potatoes have a wispy skin and gain their unique sweet, nutty taste from the light soil and mild climate of the Channel Island. Like Champagne and Stilton blue cheese, Jersey Royals enjoy a special protected status from the EU (known as PDO or protected designation of origin). This is a guarantee that they are produced, processed and prepared in Jersey – and

only in Jersey – using distinct local knowledge. Chefs and home cooks love these splendid spuds and, at the height of the season in May, up to 1,500 tonnes of Royals may be exported daily. No peeling required, they are best boiled for 10-15 minutes or until they just fall off a fork when pierced, to keep their firm texture. They’re also tasty with lemon and chive butter; drizzled with olive oil and scattered with garden herbs; or cooled in a potato salad with mayonnaise, dill and spring onions. MY CHEF NOTES

The perfect poached egg The most important thing for poached egg success? Use eggs that are as fresh as possible. Bring 2.5cm water to a gentle simmer. Break an egg into a bowl and slip it into the water. After 2 mins, take off the heat, leave for 10 mins, then lift the egg out with a draining spoon. Easy!

Miguel Barclay’S

Veggie feast The Instagram chef is back, with incredible meat-free dishes your family will love – for £1 or less* per serving!

B

y popular demand, our fave Insta-chef is back – and this time he’s cooking up delicious, super-affordable meals for our vegetarian special. His book, One Pound Meals, was born out of an obsession with creating easy and affordable recipes. ‘I’ve been experimenting with this style of cooking for the past 10 years,’ he says. ‘Instead of adding ingredients to make a dish stand out, I actually take them away and find shortcuts in order to make tasty meals that take as little time and effort to cook as possible.’ Miguel, who now has over 137,000** followers on Instagram, felt inspired

to follow his passion for cooking after spending his teens working in restaurants, washing up. ‘I’m not aiming for a Michelin star. There’s no fancy or hard-to-find ingredients in these dishes – you’ll probably have most of them in your kitchen already. Prepared and processed foods can be expensive, so I make everything from scratch, using only fresh ingredients.’ His top tips? ‘Vegetarian meals are usually cheaper to rustle up, so spend your cash on choice ingredients such as cheese and eggs. Bulk out dishes with grains, lentils and rice, and choose good-value veg, such as mushrooms, tomatoes and aubergines.’

STORE CUPBOARD ● 1tsp olive oil 1 Dissolve the yeast in 100ml warm (not hot) water. 2 In a large bowl, use a tablespoon to mix the flour and yeast-water together to create a dough. Tip it onto your worktop and knead to a smooth, elastic texture. Put it back in the bowl, cover with clingfilm and

leave to rise overnight, at room temperature. 3 The next day, tip the dough out onto a floured worktop. Dust with plenty of flour and use your fingertips to press down into it, gently shaping it into a circle – or just use a rolling pin. 4 When the dough circle is roughly the same size as your biggest frying pan, use your fingers to stretch it into a circle that covers the whole base of the pan. 5 Put the pan on your hob over maximum heat and spread the passata over

the base while it is cooking. 6 Once the base is starting to colour, preheat your grill to high. Add the spinach and mozzarella, then crack the egg into the centre. Season with black pepper and drizzle with the olive oil. Transfer to the grill and cook until the cheese melts and the egg white is set but the yolk is still runny. 7 Sprinkle over the cheese and more black pepper. Each 245g serving contains: ENERGY

63p Mushroom risotto V

Risotto is an important dish for One Pound Meals. It illustrates how you can elevate a simple ingredient like rice into a delicious meal. SERVES 1 READY IN 30 MINS ● ¼ onion, diced ● 75g Asda Risotto

Arborio Rice

● 100g mushrooms,

sliced

● Small handful

grated Cheddar (about 20g) STORE CUPBOARD ● 1tsp olive oil ● 1 vegetable stock cube

1 Start by filling a kettle and boiling some water. 2 Pan-fry the onion in ½tsp olive oil on a medium heat. After 5 mins, when the onion is translucent but before it starts to brown, add the rice and season with ground black pepper. 3 Add 100ml of the boiled water and crumble in the stock cube. Stir the rice

28 | GOOD ASDAGOODLIVING.CO.UK LIVING

over a medium heat as the stock cube dissolves. 4 After a couple of mins, the rice will have absorbed most of the water. Add another 100ml of hot water from the kettle and continue to stir. 5 Keep adding hot water in small amounts as you stir the risotto. 6 Meanwhile, in a separate pan, fry the mushrooms, along with some black pepper, in the other ½tsp olive oil over a medium heat for 10 mins. Cook until

they are golden brown, then set to one side. 7 After about 20 mins of adding water and stirring the rice – and once you have the firm but creamy texture – remove from the heat. 8 Stir most of the Cheddar and all the sautéed mushrooms into the rice. 9 Serve scattered with the rest of the Cheddar. childhood recipe – his mum Alba’s speedy seafood spaghetti

W

hen you want to try the best spaghetti with clams in the world, you have to get my mum Alba, 62, to cook it for you.Whenever I think of this recipe, I picture a little skinny lady in the corner of a kitchen, chatting and singing – that’s what Mum does – making this amazing, simple dish that I love. Mum lives in the south of Italy and I’m now in London. This means we only get to see each other a handful of times a year but we talk on the phone every week. Since my father passed away, I’ve become the man of our family so I’m the one that Mum comes to when she’s got a problem. I love her to bits. My family used to go camping when I was a little boy and wherever we went, Mum always made this dish because in Italy you can find clams everywhere. We’d even collect our own at the seaside! I hope you enjoy this simple supper as much as I do... This Morning, weekdays, 10.30, ITV

fish facts Public Health England recommends eating at least two portions of fish a week, including one of oily fish such as mackerel, salmon and fresh tuna. Why? ‘Fish provides protein in the diet,’ says Asda Nutritionist Beth Fowler. ‘What’s more, oily fish also provides heart-healthy omega-3 fats. Steam, grill or bake for a healthier alternative to frying, and serve with a variety of veg to boost your 5-a-day.’ Despite its nutritional bonuses, a recent survey by Asda showed that two 34 | ASDAGOODLIVING.CO.UK

in five customers aren’t confident when it comes to choosing, preparing and cooking fish. But help is at hand, explains Gemma Lamond, Asda’s Category Planner for Fish. ‘People sometimes avoid fish because of the bones, but our fish counter colleagues are always happy to clean, gut and fillet fish to order.’

Family and flavour A relative of the salmon, this freshwater fish has peachy-coloured, flaky flesh with a rich but delicate flavour. cooking ideas ● Poach trout in wine with herbs, or bake or grill. ● Marinate before cooking – this fish works well with

robust flavours, such as tarragon or chilli, and a squeeze of citrus will cut through its richness. ● Roast it whole with a drizzle of oil and serve with a green salad. ● BBQ wrapped in foil with cherry tomatoes. ● Try this quick, easy dish: ASDAgoodliving.co.uk/ food/recipes/ pan-fried-trout-fillets

Good catch Over the years, Asda has built excellent relationships with both its fisheries and suppliers. ‘Having a strong sustainable policy in place is very important to us,’ says Gemma. ‘It allows fish to be caught in a way that enables stocks to replenish and doesn’t harm the marine environment.’ So why not head to our fish counters today, available in selected stores, for the pick of the British catch – and check out our recipes and serving suggestions here...

Ray wings Family and flavour These flatfish are part of a family called Batoidea, which has over 600 species. Its ‘wings’ are meaty in texture with a subtle flavour, similar to scallops. cooking ideas ● Ray wings can be roasted in the oven, gently poached or pan-fried. ● Serve with a classic herby dressing, or a creamy parsley sauce or a dollop of tartare.

We also offer a wide range of fresh and frozen seafood, including prawns, scallops, lobster tails, mussels and mixed seafood cocktail

Mackerel

Hake

Family and flavour If any fish is underrated, it’s the humble mackerel. A relative of tuna, this streamlined fish, with distinctive, striped skin, is versatile, great value and full of flavour. Its flesh is firm and oily – a source of omega-3 fatty acids.

cooking ideas ● Roast whole on a bed

of vegetables. ● Brush fillets with oil and

grill for 6 mins each side. ● Serve with a potato or

salad and green beans. ● Try this simple dish:

Family and flavour Hake is a deep-sea member of the cod family. The flesh is firm but flaky and sweet and works in place of most white fish in many recipes. It goes well with strong flavours such as curry and citrus. cooking ideas ● Hake’s firm flesh makes it ideal for pan-frying, grilling or barbecuing. ● Stir cooked, flaked hake through flavoured couscous or into an omelette. ● Use fillets in this delicious, spiced dish: ASDAgoodliving.co.uk/food/recipes/ ikan-kacang-fish-with-peanut-sauce

Add flavour with smoke chips. Soak them in water for 15 minutes so they’ll smoulder without burning, then sprinkle onto the charcoal. Or, wrap the smoke chips in foil with holes poked in the top, put on the BBQ grill and cook your food with the lid shut.

Expert tip

To clean your grill without chemicals, heat it up, cut a large, raw onion in half and prong it on a big BBQ fork, then rub it over the hot bars to help loosen sticky baked-on grime. Genius!

expert tips… One of the rites of spring is dragging out the BBQ and firing it up for another season of outdoor cooking. BBQ expert Rich Harris, chef and author of Fire & Smoke, says that whether you’re a seasoned pitmaster or out to buy your first grill, the greatest joy is the simplicity of the cooking. ‘For me, barbecuing is about getting everyone round for a good time, having a feed and enjoying yourself without slaving over the grill the whole time,’ he says. ‘The results that you get from cooking over fire can be really special – those lovely smoky flavours that permeate meat, fish or vegetables. ‘If you tend to stick to burgers and sausages but want to try something more adventurous, I’d suggest a butterflied leg of lamb,’ Rich explains. ‘Use a handful of ingredients to marinate [such as oregano, garlic, olive oil and lemon juice] and simply grill it, turning occasionally, then you just have to tend to that one piece of meat and it works out as good value for money to feed a crowd, too.’ Want to get the barbie started? Anatomy of a sandwich

£1.55 per serving

Sarnies are a very personal thing – everyone has likes and dislikes – but there are a few things to consider when building the ultimate butty.

Choose the right bread for the job

This really does make all the difference between sarnie success and failure. Think about the filling – for soft centres, such as cream cheese or jam, you want bread with a crunch, and vice-versa. Crispy fillings, like fried chicken, should come wrapped in a soft roll or tortilla. It’s all about creating a contrast.

Spread the word

Butter, spreads and mayo don’t just taste good – they also form a barrier between the bread and filling that helps prevent sogginess. Think of it as waterproofing your sarnie! For even more flavour, mix herbs and spices into your mayo or softened butter.

Top billing in your filling

Avocado-chickpea mashup in a pitta pocket Your smash-and-grab lunch SERVES 1 READY IN 20 MINS

Preheat your oven to 220C/200C Fan/Gas 7. Toss 100g canned chickpeas, rinsed and drained, in a little oil and 1tsp ground cumin then roast until crispy. This tends to be the protein, such as meat or dairy, and it’s usually layered on the bottom slice of bread. Where it’s placed matters – yes, seriously. If you don’t believe us, try eating your next burger-in-a-bun upside down!

Layer it up…

Make your sarnie simple or complex – as long as the tastes and textures complement each other. Keep building that contrast, but not so much that the flavours clash, and, to avoid first-bite fallout, don’t layer slippery ingredients like tomato and cucumber slices together.

…and know when to stop!

Overstuffed butties can end up droopy, with precious ingredients spilling out. As a general rule, the firmer the bread (think baguette) the more filling it can take. Selected stores only, subject to availability. Minimum spend will apply online. 40p bag charge and delivery charge may apply online

Trim the pastry. Put the case on a baking tray, line the pastry with baking paper and fill with baking beans or uncooked rice. 3 Bake for 8-12 mins, on the middle shelf of the oven, until the sides of the pastry case have set. Reduce the oven temp to 150C/130C Fan/Gas 2. 4 Meanwhile, cut the peaches in half, twist to separate the halves and remove the stones. Cut each peach half into 3 slices and toss in the oil. 5 Heat a griddle or frying pan over a high heat

NUDE AWAKENING S

Pretty, flawless and fresh. Find your skintone saviours and nail the natural look this season

kin that gleams, subtly defined eyes and freshly flushed cheeks… It’s no wonder the nude, barelythere look is at the top of everyone’s make-up to-do list this spring. Whatever your skin tone, it’s actually super-easy to bag this look. Make sure you prep your skin first, then pick the celeb complexion closest to yours, add the products to your trolley and give it a glow…

Prep Step Everyone needs to beautify beneath their nude style make-up. Why? Hydrated, healthy faces not only look plump and fresh, they also make the perfect base for all our sheer layers of foundation, highlighter and blush. Everything stays in place all day long. So… exfoliate with a DIY facial – try nspa Hot Cloth Polish, £6.40 teamed with the nspa Radiance Boosting Mask, £2. Next, pitter patter nspa Illuminating Beauty Serum, £6.40 across your face with your fingertips. Let it sink in for at least five minutes before smoothing on nspa Brightening Day Cream with SPF15, £6,

then leave this to settle for five minutes, too. Finally, to give a sheeny, 3D effect to your make-up, work L’Oréal Paris True Match Liquid Glow Illuminator in Icy Glow or Golden Glow, £5 each*, across the cheeks, nose, temples and cheekbones. Pick the cooler icy colour for pale to fair skin. Medium to dark tones? Go for the gold. And if you want to help minimise pores, fill in fine lines and give your foundation a smooth base, add a touch of George Illuminating Primer, £3.50**.

Add Collection Speedy Blush in Cheeky, £3.98 just below the apples of your cheeks, then bring the colour up towards the cheekbones, blurring the edges. Strong brows and lashes are a fair-maiden must, so make them pop with Colorsport 30 Day Mascara Eyelash & Brow Dye Kit in Dark Brown, £7.50. Boost natural lip colour with a slick of Nivea Pearly Shine Caring Lip Balm, £2.30.

This skin tone typically needs a twoproduct approach to deal with coverage as well as combination skin. First, use a little Garnier BB Cream Miracle Skin All-in-One Moisturising Cream in Medium, £10 for a base that glows. Next, dab George Silk Finish Pressed Powder, £2 over your T-zone. Add a soft contour with a sweep of L’Oréal Paris True Match Powder Glow Illuminator in Golden Glow, £7.98 over the highest points of your cheekbones, your temples and a little over the top of your cupid’s bow – this will emphasise the golden tone of your skin. Finally, treat your pout to a peachy hint of nude with the hydrating Maybelline Baby Lips Lip Balm in Cherry Me, £1.75.

All hail the classic English (or Welsh, Scots or Irish) Rose! This pinkish skintone only needs a little help to look its best. Start with a light base to cover any blemishes – Maybelline Fit Me Matte & Poreless Foundation, £5.98 glides on effortlessly. Next, lightly dust your face with Rimmel Natural Bronzer in Sun Bronze, £4.50* for a healthy-looking glow. Accentuate eyes with a subtle slick of George Lash X-Tend Mascara in Brown, £3.50, then a brush of Rimmel London Eyebrow Pencil in Hazel, £2.50* to highlight your brows. A worn-in nude lip is best for you, so apply Rimmel London Lasting Finish Lipstick in Nude Pink, £4* to your pout.

You can’t go wrong with Rimmel London Fresher Skin Foundation, £7.48 smoothed all over the face if you’re lucky enough to have this golden-peachy colouring. Do one fine layer, then add more where you need it – usually around the chin and nose. Next, pat L’Oréal Paris True Match Liquid Glow Illuminator in Golden Glow, £5* onto the tops of your cheekbones, before adding swirls of George Blush in Rosey, £3 to the apples of the cheek. You can be bold with this – the pinky, purply hue will accentuate your natural flush. Play a strong game with your lippie, tracing the lip line with L’Oréal Color Riche Gold Obsession in Nude Gold, £6.98 and filling the rest in straight from the bullet. Repeat and blot.

DARKER TONES

Naomie Harris

Darker skintones can be as prone as any to looking dull or uneven, but there’s an easy fix – fake tan! This works by adding subtle golden tones, giving your skin a ‘best version of itself’ radiance. Mix two parts of your fave base with one part of Rimmel London Sunshimmer Instant Tan 9-in-1 BB Skin Perfector in Medium Matte, £6.99 on the back of your hand. Apply, then enhance your natural tone even more with a double layer of blush. Pat creamy Collection Soft Glow Blusher in Trouble, £2.98 into your cheeks. Set with a little powder and add depth with shimmering berry shade Max Factor Crème Puff Blush in Alluring Rose, £8.98. To finish, go for a dark-nude lipstick with burgundy hints – try L’Oréal Paris Color Riche in Nude, £6.98. Selected stores only, subject to availability. Minimum spend will apply online. 40p bag charge and delivery charge may apply online. *Price valid until 17 May 2017

family fitness challenge Three families took on our week-long fitness bootcamp – find out how you can do it, too! Josie Gibson, 32, The Jump contestant and personal trainer, knows just how important it is to stay active, having lost an amazing 7st through changing her own diet and exercise regime. ‘Sadly, one child in three in the UK is now overweight or obese *,’ says Josie, and as a result she stresses ‘it’s important to get kids into fitness habits from an early age.’ If you’re one of the 80% of families in the UK who don’t do the recommended amount of exercise**, you’re probably not alone. ‘There’s always an excuse not to get moving,’ argues Josie, ‘time, housework, your job, the weather – so you need to build exercise into your family routine.’ A kick-start is the best way to get going, she suggests, and to prove this Josie has created a week-long ‘boot-camp’ for families who’ve let their fitness slide. Three families were given a plan that took into account their lifestyle and daily routines, with a rest-day on the Sunday. Here’s how they did... Selected stores only, subject to availability. ‘I’m going to cancel our gym memberships!’ Julia Shields, 38, a copywriter, lives in Yatton, Bristol with her husband Doug, 49, a PR director, and their sons Will, 13, Alex, nine, Eric, six, and Bear, three Julia says ‘With work and four boys to ferry to activity clubs, we don’t exercise as much as we once did. We’ve been married for 12 years and used to both work out at the gym a couple of times a week. Despite not going any more, we’re still paying our membership fees in the hope we’ll get our act together but, with four young children, there simply isn’t time now. ‘Doug and I have both put on weight and I feel exhausted most of the time. Getting everyone organised and out of the door for school is tiring enough, not to mention the fact we’re constantly cooking for the kids and cleaning up after them. I’m intrigued to find out whether we’ll be able to find the time to incorporate exercise into our family routine.’ MONDAY No-car day and a 45-minute walk after dinner. TUESDAY Family burpees – do these every time there’s an ad break on TV. WEDNESDAY No-car day and a family planking competition – see who can hold a plank the longest. THURSDAY Family Nerf battle for 30 minutes in the garden or park. FRIDAY Family disco – compile a playlist of everyone’s fave songs, then dance to it for 45 minutes. SATURDAY Kids lead the way – go for a walk, but the children get to decide the route and length.

The Verdict ‘We all found it hilarious doing burpees during the ad breaks but, as well as all having a laugh as a family, we also got out of breath every time which must have been good for us. The boys loved the planking, too – they’re all competitive. I read online that if you can’t hold a plank for 120 seconds you’re either overweight, too weak or doing something wrong in your workouts. So I need to work on that! ‘The boys have already asked if we can have a Nerf battle every week and

What is a burpee exactly?

Burpees are great for all-round fitness – each one gives your arms, chest, legs and abs a workout and you may get out of breath quickly! Here’s how they’re done… 1 From a standing start, squat down with your hands on the floor in front of you. 2 Lean onto your arms and, at the same time, kick your feet back so that you’re stretched out into a ‘press up’ position with your legs behind you. 3 Jump your feet back into a squat as fast as you can. 4 From the squat, jump up in the air as high as you can. You’re now ready to go again!

FAMILY CHALLENGE

I enjoyed the boogie we had at our disco. None of it really felt like exercise because we were more focused on the family time instead. Still, Doug and I were aching by the end of the week – my abs have definitely seen better days! ‘I count my daily steps on my smartphone and usually average about 5,000 steps, which includes walking our

dog. On the no-car day, it shot up to 14,000! Although walking everywhere seemed like a hassle at first, I was happy with the end results – even after my youngest,

‘We’re getting fit and spending quality time together, too’

Bear, had a tantrum, lay down on the pavement and refused to move. ‘I always thought I didn’t have time to exercise but doing it as a family means we’re all getting fit and spending more quality time together, too. ‘The best thing is, it’s all free – I’m going to cancel those gym memberships and save us a bit of cash!’

‘It’s been a fantastic family-bonding experience’

The Verdict

Gemma Andrews, 32, a housewife, lives in Chesterfield with her husband Michael, 31, a security guard, and their children Lewis, 13, Macie, 11, Findlay, three, and Noah, 10 months

younger boys to follow in his footsteps and would like to instil fitness into their lifestyle from an earlier age but I don’t know where to start – the thought of rounding them all up makes me feel drained.’

Gemma says ‘We could do more with the kids and we should do more ourselves to get fit and lose weight but it’s easy to find excuses when you’ve got a hectic schedule. I used to do Zumba three times a week but since I stopped two years ago, I’ve ballooned to a size 22. I want to lose two dress sizes by the summer but Michael is out of work so we can’t afford the gym. Lewis is always glued to his Xbox, so I’m worried about what he’ll think of this challenge. ‘I always feel like I’m fighting a losing battle to get him outdoors. The only reason he was active last year was Pokémon Go. I don’t want my

MONDAY After-school swimming for one hour, and see who can tread water for the longest time. TUESDAY No-wheels day – walk everywhere, no bus and, in the evening, a 45-minute walk. WEDNESDAY Balloon keepy-uppy, then catch, with a two-burpees forfeit for dropping the balloon – 30 minutes each. THURSDAY Tag – play in the garden or local park for 30 minutes after school. FRIDAY YouTube yoga – find a beginner’s yoga workout online and do it together as a family. SATURDAY Family footie – play for 25 minutes, then the losing team has to run three laps of the garden.

Gemma says ‘Until we took this challenge, I didn’t realise how much space we had for activities together in the week. It’s been a fantastic bonding experience. ‘I was overjoyed that Lewis got involved – he was chuffed to win the pool challenge, treading water for seven minutes! He also loved the jeopardy of whoever lost at football having to run laps – and we all had a good laugh when Michael and I lost! ‘It’s spurred Macie to start working at the local stables in return for free riding lessons. Findlay is out of his pushchair, and sleeping and eating better as a result of walking more. ‘Our chaotic household was surprisingly calm after yoga – the kids were really inspired by the animalthemed moves, like Cobra and Downward-Facing Dog. ‘It’s ages since Michael and I worked up a sweat but this challenge was cheaper and more fun than the gym. We’re all happier when we’re active – I’m determined to keep this up.’

‘The more exercise we did, the more energy we had’ Vicki Finnegan, 62, and husband Mike, 61, are grandparents to Sofia, 18 months. They are retired and live near Plymouth Vicki says ‘We used to do gardening, long walks and tennis. But if the weather’s bad and we’ve had Sofia for the day, it’s easier to find an excuse to relax on the sofa than get the trainers

on and get out. As retired doctors, we know it’s vital to stay fit, and we used to run marathons. I feel guilty we’ve fallen by the wayside. I feel sluggish and Mike has a bit of a paunch!’

MONDAY Standing pressups – do these (carefully) against a worktop, while cooking. After lunch, go for a 90-minute walk. TUESDAY No-car day – speed-walk everywhere, including errands and the shops. While queuing, tense abs for 20 seconds, relax for 10 and tense again for 20 until you’re served. WEDNESDAY 15 burpees and 50 abdominal crunches before the morning shower. THURSDAY Wash and polish the car and walk up and downstairs 20 times. FRIDAY Go the long way. Walk for 90 minutes before eating dinner at your fave restaurant, then walk home. SATURDAY Picnic hike – load your backpacks with food, plus 1L water as extra weight. Map a three-mile route to a picnic spot. Walk there, enjoy an al fresco lunch, then walk back.

The Verdict Vicki says ‘It’s easy to get complacent when you’ve got time on your hands. Mike and I were surprised at how much exercise we

could fit in. We enjoy eating out but adding a long walk to the meal made it feel more deserved. We also found that the more exercise we did, the more energy we had. Even playing with Sofia in the park, not just watching her, helped increase our heart rates. ‘We live in a village in the middle of nowhere so the no-car day was tricky – we ended up walking for three hours to buy a pint of milk! It felt strange tensing my abs in the local shop while having a chat with the owner, but I’m sure I’ll get used to it if I start to see results in the long term. The burpees made me realise how unfit I am – by the end of the week, I just about managed 10 without stopping but they still turned my legs to jelly. ‘There’s a lot we’ll take away from the week and we’ve both promised we’ll incorporate little things like adding extra weight to our backpacks and relying less on our cars. Now the sun’s out again, I’m keen to get back in the garden, too!’

Try it at home! Josie’s week-long bootcamp can be built into your weekly routine, with a bit of planning. Josie says ‘As our families found, there’s always time to fit in exercise, no matter how busy you are. The key is thinking on your feet – literally – and working exercise into other activities. ‘If family time is a priority for you, play in the garden rather than sitting indoors and watching a movie. If you’re picking the kids up from 106 | ASDAGOODLIVING.CO.UK

school, walk, or if you have to drive, park further away, get there early and go for a pick-up power walk. Making huge, sweeping lifestyle changes can be daunting, but as soon as you switch your mindset to being more active, losing weight and getting fit becomes a much more realistic proposition. ‘Make sure you schedule time, too – it can make so much of a difference. We keep to a timetable

for work and we wouldn’t dream of letting down the dentist when we’ve booked an appointment, so start treating your exercise time with the same level of commitment you do other aspects of your life. ‘Finally, don’t put it off or say “I’ll start tomorrow” – if you have time right now, put the magazine down and go for a walk. If you’ve only got a few minutes, do a few burpees. The change you want starts today.’ It is recommended that you consult your GP or other health professional before starting any kind of fitness programme

Snack Hacks Everyone gets peckish now and again but how do you know what’s good for you and when? Here’s our how-to for snacking

S

nacking – everyone does it! While it’s fine to have a little bit of what you fancy every so often, healthy eating shouldn’t go out of the window whenever a mid-afternoon slump comes along. Asda Nutritionist Beth Fowler says, ‘Snacks can introduce variety and be part of a healthy diet, provided they don’t contribute to excess calorie intake and that we eat a good balance of food groups in the right proportions. So, planning ahead is key. ‘The Eatwell Guide* shows the types and proportions of food and drink that make up a healthy, balanced diet – and can help you fit snacks into the context of your overall food intake.’ Here are some tips and snack ideas to start you off…

Give a dog a home

Adopting a dog is a wonderful way to rescue an animal and find the perfect furry friend for you, says vet Dr Zara Boland

A

dopting a dog can be a hugely rewarding experience. Whether you’re after a puppy, or a four-legged friend who’s a little more senior, rescue dogs come with unique personalities and a lot of love to give. But where do you begin when looking for that new addition to your family?

It’s important to create a quiet place, with a soft dog bed, that your pet can go to when they need some downtime. Plenty of love and kindness will help them to settle in – and, remember, you can teach an old dog new tricks!

Photograph: Getty Images

Pick a pet Adoption centres go to great lengths to match families with pets to ensure you are a good fit for one another. Contact the centre to arrange a visit and, when you meet your potential dog, bring the whole family so you can assess if there are any obvious challenges, behavioural or otherwise. After completing an application form, home visits are usually carried out by adoption support volunteers, who check your place is suitable for your new fluffy pal. A reputable adoption centre like the RSPCA* will have your dog neutered, microchipped and vaccinated, and may even come with six months’ free pet insurance. moving in Settling into a new home can be stressful for pets. It’s a good idea to give your new dog a T-shirt or a blanket from your home before they move in, so they can familiarise themselves with your unique smells – plus, it’ll give them something comforting to travel with. Avoid tummy upsets by continuing to feed the dog food they are used to. If you want to change to a different food, do so gradually over seven days and always take them outside for toilet breaks within 30 minutes of eating. Selected stores only, subject to availability. Minimum spend will apply online. 40p bag charge and delivery charge may apply online. *Other rescue centres may differ. For more information, visit RSPCA.org

‘ They love cuddles’

Klare Kennett, from Haywards Heath, took in two rescue dogs – Border Terrier Monty and German Shepherd Barney. ‘We adopted Monty, eight, and Barney, two, from the RSPCA as puppies. Monty was born at the RSPCA after his mum was rescued from appalling conditions at a puppy farm, and Barney was found caged up at an illegal security-dog breeding kennels. ‘They’re very affectionate and love cuddles, and the fact that we’ve rescued them from horrible circumstances make them even more precious.’

, ‘I love a one-pot wonder’

Davina McCall talks golden syrup sandwiches and celebrating her 50th this October

TV presenter Davina, 49, lives with her husband Matthew and children Holly, 15, Tilly, 13, and Chester, 10 Who’s your cooking inspiration? My granny, Pippy, was a great cook who made wholesome, delicious food. One of my earliest memories is of her conjuring up boiled ham with parsley sauce. Since I started cooking more, in my early 30s, I’ve loved Jamie Oliver. His recipes are accessible and easy to make. Childhood favourite? Buitoni tinned ravioli. It was a newfangled convenience food back in the ’70s and, every so often, I was allowed a tin. I thought it was amazing. Quick weekday supper? I love a one-pot wonder and my family love a pie so I make the Chicken, Leek and Mushroom Pie from my new book. It’s topped with filo pastry so it’s nice and crunchy, and you use crème fraîche instead of cream. Yum! 114 | ASDAGOODLIVING.CO.UK

Favourite comfort food? Scrambled egg and avocado because it’s like baby food. Anything you avoid? Shellfish. I don’t like the texture. Eurgh! Kitchen tip? Try to enjoy yourself. Sometimes we get so stressed, we stop enjoying the therapeutic effect cooking can have. Last supper? I’m partial to sausages, beans and sweet potato mash. Any plans for your 50th? I’ll be spending it in a nightclub going absolutely crazy with all my good friends. Dream dinner-party guests? A lot of women! I met Caitlin Moran recently and love her. Kate Bush is a heroine of mine, and I’d invite Jennifer Lawrence and Helen Mirren. I’m quietly convinced I’d become best friends with them both. How do you stay in shape? Training three times a week, and more if I have time. I do exercises from my DVD 30 Day Fat Burn to

tone up. I also go for lovely dog walks and stay as active as I can. Your in-training diet? Unless you’re working towards an extreme event, you don’t need to change what you eat. I try to eat a balanced diet – a bit of protein, fat and complex carbs, like brown rice and sweet potatoes, with every meal. And I keep low on sugar. Guilty pleasure? A Coke Zero – a sweet treat, but without the sugar. Believe it or not, I used to eat golden syrup and sugar sandwiches on white bread with butter! How do your kids eat? You have to show kids the way. I started them off with vegetable purées when they were weaned. I always ask them to try something and if they don’t like it, they can have something else. Plus, don’t be afraid of mess. Let them eat with their hands and have fun with their food. What do you like to cook for Matthew? I often give him quinoa with veg so, as a treat, I make a beef fillet, steamed in red wine on a bed of root veg to make him happy. I serve it with roast potatoes and bread sauce – we have bread sauce with everything! Best meal you’ve eaten abroad? I’m half-French and you can’t beat the South of France. It has such a lovely atmosphere. There’s a wonderful beach restaurant, where I can put my toes in the sand, that serves simple dishes like grilled fish with rice and lemon sauce. Delicious!
