PICK OF THE SEASON Savour the last days of summer with the finest food in store this month

F

rom fresh Italian pasta to succulent British chicken, we’ll go to great lengths to bring you delicious food inspired by beautiful global cuisine. Since winning Quality Food Retailer of the Year last November, we’re determined to keep you satisfied – this month you can expect lots of innovative food for a brilliant gastronomic experience. After all, the foundation of great cooking is first-rate ingredients – and we’re always passionate about delivering them to you. Tempted? Here, we reveal our pick of September’s unmissable products… ‘These grapes have a wonderfully crisp bite which makes them ideal to add to salads and curries. Alternatively, you can freeze them to eat as a snack or to chill a late-summer cocktail.’

Good Living Food Editor, Gregor McMaster

FULL OF FLAVOUR Our Grower’s Selection range offers a delicious variety of red and green seedless grapes which are firm to the touch and full of juicy goodness. Straight from the field (or vineyard) to fork, they’re absolutely bursting with freshness. Enjoy these smooth-skinned delights simply as they are or roasted with a sharp balsamic vinegar and served with creamy Camembert. See p57 for our recipe.

CATCH OF THE DAY Create magic in any dish with our Extra Special Wild Pacific Sockeye Salmon Fillets, £6 (230g; £2.61/100g). Caught from the cold waters of the Pacific Ocean, in and around Alaska, this sustainably sourced, firm-textured fish has a rich and robust flavour that will pass any taste test. Serve this grilled or pan-fried – complete with gloriously crispy skin – alongside some seasonal greens and a squeeze of lemon or lime.

PESTO PERFECTION Traditionally crafted in the Lombardy region of northern Italy, our new Extra Special Basil Pesto Girasole, was £2.50, now £2* (300g; 66p/100g) has a blend of soft wheat flour and durum wheat semolina. The sumptuous, free-range-egg pasta shells are packed with ricotta, basil and pinenuts. Our range also includes classic flavour duos Butternut & Sage and Beef & Red Wine.

THE ULTIMATE BRITISH ROAST Nail the perfect roast with our awardwinning 100% British Extra Tasty Whole Chicken in a Bag, was £5, now £4.50 (1.5kg; £3/kg). Basted and sealed-in for extra succulence, it’s even readyseasoned. Just pop it in the oven and you have a delicious no-mess, fuss-free, flavoursome dish to serve on any occasion. It also comes in a variety of flavours – why not try the Garlic & Herb for a Mediterranean spin on this oh-so-British classic.

MELT IN THE MOUTH ‘From one coast to the other, we went all around Italy to find the finest pasta from recipes passed down through generations. Ideal with torn basil and Italian olive oil – a true taste of la dolce vita!’ Mark Richmond, Asda Innovations Development Chef

Inspired by great gastropub favourites, our new Extra Special Salmon Fishcakes with a Hollandaise Sauce Melting Layer, £2.75 (290g; 94p/100g) combine tasty ingredients with a decidedly artisan feel. Succulent chunks of Atlantic salmon are beautifully blended with Melody and Maris Piper potatoes, double cream and roasted shallots, topped with a wineenriched hollandaise sauce and then hand-finished with a barley and spelt crumb. Perfect with poached eggs for a lazy Saturday brunch.

MAGNIFICENT MASCARPONE Superb for solo dining, our single-serve Extra Special Sunblush Tomato & Italian Mascarpone Pizza, £2.50 (170g; £1.47/100g) is inspired by the pizzerias of Naples. The dough is handstretched for an authentically thin, soft base that crisps in our stone-bake oven and is topped with creamy mascarpone and sun-ripened tomatoes. Also available in the equally more-ish Extra Special British Chicken & Basil Pesto Pizza, £2.50 (170g; £1.47/100g).

Selected stores only, subject to availability. Minimum spend will apply online. 40p bag charge and delivery charge may apply online. *Offer price from 7-27 September 2017. **Offer price from 17 August-27 September 2017. GOURMET DELIGHT We’ve scoured Europe to bring you some of the finest gourmet cheeses around, such as our Extra Special Burrata, £1.40 (100g). Burrata, which literally translates to ‘buttered’, is known as the queen of Italian cheese – and once you try it, you’ll know why. Made from torn mozzarella and velvety cream, it’s gooey, rich and truly indulgent. Try with tomatoes, basil leaves and a drizzle of olive oil for a mouthwatering meal that wouldn’t be out of place in a sun-soaked piazza.

A SPOONFUL OF HEAVEN Sweet vanilla pods and creamy Cornish clotted cream go into our Extra Special Madagascan Vanilla Ice Cream, was £2.50, now £2** (500ml; 40p/100ml). Savour every spoonful of this deceptively simple but ultra-decadent dessert.

SUNDAY SUCCULENT The perfect roast can now be perfectly easy to make, thanks to our Extra Tasty Medium Whole Chicken In A Bag (£5), one of our hero products this season. Handselected, basted and sealed-in for extra succulence, this 100 per cent British bird is also ready-seasoned with spices and bell peppers. Just pop it in the oven and you have a delicious no-mess and no-fuss flavoursome dish to serve on any occasion.

FOOD

pimp your lunchbox Fed up with the same old soggy sandwiches every day? Time to refresh your packed lunch and make it the envy of your colleagues. For starters, change the ‘platform’ – try baps, wraps, flatbreads and rye. Use leftovers such as chicken and salmon, add colour with grated carrot and beetroot, and finish with a splash of minty yogurt or pesto mayo. Top cream cheese or almond butter sandwiches with sliced seasonal fruits such as pears and figs to add sweetness. TIPS FOR A TOP SARNIE ‘Sandwich architect’ Victoria Watson tests over 1,000 butties a year, so follow her guide. ‘Choose quality bread, position “wet” fillings carefully to avoid sogginess, and use condiments like mayo to keep it all together.’ Find our fabulous range of food to go – sandwiches, wraps, salads and more – in store now.

Butternut squash

It’s the perfect veg to bridge summer’s end and the start of autumn, but did you know you can eat the skin and seeds of butternut squash once cooked? If you prefer it skin-free, cut it in half lengthways to give you a solid base and make it stable for peeling. Then cube, and roast or steam. Mashed squash is great for bulking out pasta sauce while adding ‘hidden’ veg for kids.

The cost of a daily high-street coffee soon adds up, so capsules at home are a great alternative. Stay savvy, without missing out on flavour, by switching to our Extra Special Nespresso Compatible Capsules (was £2.48, now £2* for 10 x 5g). Developed by our expert coffee-tasting team, each pod is carefully sourced, roasted and ground to deliver a perfectly balanced range. Try Aromatico for a delicate, caramel smooth blend of Arabica beans, or intense Possente for a bolder espresso to kickstart the day.

KITCHEN KIT

George Home stand hand mixer, £24

Whisk cakes into shape with this handy two-in-one, five-speed mixer. The hand-mixer part detaches from the base, so it can be used independently to whip and beat everything from cream to eggs. FOOD

QUICK FIXES Easy veg snacks and sides – ready in no time

Waste not, want not!

Got veg left over? Here are a few ways to prevent it ending up in the bin…

GRATE IDEA Grate or finely chop carrots, onions and peppers and put in freezer bags with pinches of chilli flakes or herbs, if you like. Freeze for up to 1 month, then use straight from frozen. It’s a great way to sneak veg into a sauce or casserole.

CRUNCH TIME

Cut onions into 1cm slices and separate into rings. Make a batter of self-raising flour and sparkling water. Fill a deep pan ⅓-full of rapeseed oil and heat. Dip the rings in the batter then deep-fry for 2 mins until golden. Remove with a slotted spoon and serve with ketchup to dip.

Easy potato cakes

Grate raw potato and onion then mix with chopped parsley and a little flour and beaten egg to hold the mixture together. Form into cakes, then fry in rapeseed oil on both sides until golden and cooked through. A great accompaniment to salmon and soured cream.

Sweet ’n’ sour pepper relish

Roast peppers in olive oil until lightly blackened. Peel when cool enough to handle. Mix a dressing of white wine vinegar, sugar and chopped mint and toss with the peppers. Try with roasted halloumi.

Cucumber raita

Halve a piece of cucumber lengthways and remove the seeds. Chop the flesh and mix with natural yogurt and chopped mint. Great with a spicy curry.

18 | ASDAGOODLIVING.CO.UK

Bistro lettuce

Toss lettuce with a dressing of red wine vinegar and olive oil. Mix with cooked frozen peas and top with bacon pieces and croûtons. Serve with poached eggs.

Baked tomatoes

Drizzle olive oil over vine-ripened cherry tomatoes and sprinkle with dried oregano. Put in a roasting tin with garlic cloves and bake at 200C/180C Fan/Gas 6 for 20 mins. Serve with griddled chicken.

HERB CUBES Chop leftover fresh herbs, put in an ice cube tray, cover with oil or water and freeze. Simply pop these into soups or casseroles straight from the freezer.

GET SAUCY Whiz leftover roast veg in a blender until smooth and use to thicken sauces – try butternut squash in a mac ’n’ cheese.

TAKE STOCK Put peelings, vegetable tops or any leftover tomatoes into a large pan. Cover with water and simmer to make a tasty stock. Or freeze your veg trimmings and save to add to the stockpot in one go.

Photographs: Terry Benson. Styling: Jenny Iggleden. Food styling: Matthew Ford; Getty

Classic onion rings

Make crisps with carrot and potato peelings. Toss the peelings with rapeseed oil, paprika and black pepper, spread out on a baking sheet and cook at 180C/ 160C Fan/Gas 4 for 15-20 mins until golden and crisp.

rustic Mediterranean fish dishes, his book is crammed full of uplifting, uncomplicated recipes that are speedy to make and will help you slash your food bills. Miguel’s top tip for keeping things cheap? ‘Use frozen veg and fish,’ he says. ‘It creates zero waste because you only use what you need, and the rest keeps for months in the freezer.’ Here, Miguel gives you a taster of seven amazing season-friendly recipes from his brand new book…

FOOD

Chicken & mushroom orzo

I love using this simple one-pan style of cooking to create rustic-looking dishes. It’s exactly the sort of food I like to eat at home and it’s way less complicated than it may look! SERVES 1 READY IN 25 MINS ● 1 chicken thigh, skin on,

deboned ● A few mushrooms, sliced ● A few spring onions, roughly chopped ● 1 clove garlic, sliced ● 60g orzo pasta STORE CUPBOARD ● 2tsp olive oil

1 Season the chicken thigh generously with ground black pepper and pan-fry it skin-side down in the olive oil over a medium heat for 8-10 mins until the skin is extra-crispy. Turn the chicken over and cook for 2-3 more mins, then add the mushrooms, spring onions and garlic, plus a pinch more black pepper. 2 Fry together until the mushrooms are cooked and the garlic starts to

colour. Add the orzo and 50ml water. 3 Stir to deglaze the pan and let it all simmer for 15-20 mins – add more water if needed. Once the liquid is absorbed and the chicken and orzo are cooked, season to taste and serve. Each 234g serving contains: ENERGY

Sweetcorn, courgette & feta fritters

per serving*

SERVES 1 READY IN 20 MINS ● ¼ courgette, cut into

matchsticks ● 100g sweetcorn (from a 200g or 400g can), well drained ● 2 eggs ● 2tbsp plain flour ● 20g feta, crumbled ● Small handful rocket STORE CUPBOARD ● 1tsp olive oil 22 | ASDA.COM/GROCERIES

1 Mix the courgette, sweetcorn, 1 egg, flour and feta in a bowl with plenty of black pepper. 2 Split into 3 and form into patties. Pan-fry in the oil over a medium heat for 5 mins on each side until golden brown and cooked. 3 Meanwhile, bring a pan of water to the boil and poach an egg by cracking it into a mug, very slowly lowering it into the water, then very

gently tipping it out. After a few mins, once it’s cooked, remove with a slotted spoon and allow it to drain. 4 Stack the fritters on a plate with the rocket and top with the egg and a generous sprinkling of black pepper to serve.

Green shakshuka

‘This is my updated shakshuka recipe using greens and a crumbling of salty feta. A great idea for a one-pan brunch.’ SERVES 1 READY IN 15 MINS ● A few spring onions, chopped ● Handful frozen peas ● Handful spinach ● 1 egg ● 20g feta, crumbled

STORE CUPBOARD

● 2tsp olive oil

1 Pan-fry the spring onions in the oil over a medium heat for 2 mins. 2 Meanwhile, defrost the peas in a colander under the hot tap.

3 Add the peas to the pan with the spinach, and fry for 1 min. 4 Crack the egg on top of the veg and cover the pan. After about 3 mins, when the egg white is cooked but the yolk is still runny, remove from the heat, sprinkle over the feta and some black pepper. Serve from the pan.

Roasted aloo gobi

‘Roasted vegetables are the best, not least because you can cook them all in one tray! Here, I’ve just infused the veg with some lovely curry flavours to make one of my favourite One Pound Meals. It’s a great example of how oven baking can freshen up a typically greasy dish.’ SERVES 1 READY IN 55 MINS ● ¼ cauliflower, cut

into small florets ● 1 potato, cubed ● 2tsp curry powder ● Handful frozen peas ● Handful spinach STORE CUPBOARD ● 1tsp olive oil 1 Preheat your oven to 190C/170 Fan/Gas 5. 2 Throw the cauliflower into an ovenproof dish along with the potato. Drizzle with the olive oil and sprinkle over the curry powder.

Garlic mushroom pappardelle

‘Pasta sauces don’t get simpler than olive oil and garlic, and it’s a classic combination that goes well with mushrooms. The trick is to first cook the mushrooms on a high heat to intensify the flavour and extract the water before adding the garlic, otherwise the garlic will burn. Cut your own extra-wide pasta strips from lasagne sheets.’ SERVES 1 READY IN 20 MINS ● 1 giant mushroom,

sliced ● 3 sheets dried lasagne ● 2 cloves garlic, sliced ● Pinch dried parsley (or fresh, chopped) ● 5g Parmesan, grated STORE CUPBOARD ● 2tsp olive oil 1 Boil a pan of water. 2 Season and pan-fry the mushroom in 1tsp olive oil over a medium-high heat for 8-10 mins, until it turns a dark brown colour.

3 Cook the lasagne in the water until al dente, drain and cut into wide strips. 4 Add 1tsp olive oil to the mushroom, add the garlic and fry until it starts to colour. Add the pasta and fry for 30 secs. 5 Remove the pan from the heat, then garnish with the parsley and Parmesan to serve. Each 265g serving contains: ENERGY

expensive. On weekends, we tend to eat out. As a result, we spend roughly £180 on food a week – and about £15 of that is thrown away – usually leftovers. Having this menu plan to stick to has been great. I felt a lot less stressed about dinner time, and have really enjoyed making everything from scratch. The stir-fry was a big hit. Usually, any leftover roast chicken sits in the fridge for a few days before going into the bin, so it was nice to be able

to use it in other meals. We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the Asda own-brand products, too. The yogurts were scoffed down, and Mike said that the gravy from the 20p mix was the nicest he’s had. All the recipes have been so delicious that we skipped eating out at the weekend without even noticing. I think now we’ll limit these outings to the odd treat!

FOOD

W

here food comes from and how it reaches your plate is as important to you as it is to us. That’s why we’re committed to working with farmers and growers across the country to deliver quality, affordable produce that’s bursting with flavour. Here are the stories behind some of your favourite foods…

Tomatoes

Meet the producer

Andy Roe, from Flavourfresh Salads in Southport has been supplying us for 20 years, and has tended to tomatoes since he was just 13 years old. Now 52, he still finds the job as rewarding as it was when he grew his first crop. It’s not every day there’s excitement about tomatoes, but the pumpkinshaped Tomkin tomato – unique to Asda – is certainly one worth shouting about. ‘Flavourfresh discovered the variety in Holland and brought it back to grow in Lancashire, and when we showed our results to Asda, their reaction was, “Wow, this is good”,’ explains Andy. It’s been such a success that the farm now grows around 150 trial types every year to find the next hero tomato. Andy and his colleagues produce tomatoes in all shapes, sizes and colours. ‘The tomatoes that are black, brown and purple-striped are quirky, but we always select varieties for flavour first,’ he says. ‘When I look at a tomato, it’s the eating experience that is king. The Tomkin has it all – the shape, the Ferrari-red glossy colour and the flavour.’

Make a well in the centre and add 3tbsp of the oil and 300ml warm water. Mix to a soft dough with a wooden spoon. 2 Turn out onto an oiled work surface and knead for 8-10 mins until smooth and elastic. 3 Put the dough in a lightly oiled bowl and cover with oiled clingfilm. Leave in a warm place for 1 hr or until doubled in size.

Using the heel of your hand, gently flatten and push out to a circle about 30cm in diameter. 5 Cover with oiled clingfilm and leave for 30-45 mins until doubled in size. 6 Preheat the oven to 200C/180C Fan/Gas 6. Meet the producer

Grower Len Wright (near left) and colleague Jamie Baybutt cultivate salad leaves at Baybutt’s Farm, Southport. Len has been working with Asda for 29 years. Len Wright may grow 20 types of lettuce, but it is the Romaine variety he supplies to Asda that he enjoys the most. ‘Sweet, with a distinct taste, it’s my first choice of lettuce,’ he explains. ‘I like it because every leaf tastes different.’ The climate and the location of the farm make it perfect for growing good-quality produce. In

fact, Lancashire is known as ‘the salad bowl of the UK’ as it’s ideal for growing all the ingredients that make up a salad. ‘We’re based in a unique place,’ Len explains. ‘Our farm goes right to the coast so the salt from the sea plays a part, too – you can taste it in the earth.’ His colleague Jamie agrees. ‘Growing Romaine on our wonderful peaty soils gives a particularly sweet flavour,’ he adds. Len was one of the first farmers in the area to grow salad. ‘When we started out, we supplied to local shops and markets. Then things expanded and I’ve been working with Asda since the 1980s. I wouldn’t have it any other way!’

Sausages

Meet the producer

Sarah Savage is product development manager for Asda at Finnebrogue Artisan in Northern Ireland, which has been producing our Extra Special sausages for four years. Sausages are always a favourite, whether with a fry-up at the weekend or on the end of a cocktail stick at a party. These days it’s a challenge to create sausages that stand out from the rest – but that’s where our Extra Special range comes in. Producers Finnebrogue, who also supply meat to high-end restaurants such as Heston Blumenthal’s world-famous Fat Duck, take pride in the fact that Extra Special sausages are just made of good-quality meat – and that’s it. ‘We understand that customers want to trust where their meat comes from and feel confident about what is in it,’ says Sarah. ‘We use British pork, sourced from local farms, which is Red Tractor approved, meaning it guarantees safe, quality food that meets animal welfare standards. ‘The range uses prime cuts of pork shoulder and belly, and the meat going into the sausages is always fresh, never frozen. The whole range is gluten-free, too.’ There’s nothing Sarah and her dedicated team won’t do to research the perfect sausage. ‘We’ve travelled the world looking for inspiration for different flavours,’ she says. ‘But most importantly, we ask our customers what they want.’

Toast of the town

When you’re looking for the perfect tipple for a special occasion or dinner party, our selection is better than ever thanks to another fantastic year for Asda’s wine producers. Ed Betts, Wine Buying Manager for Asda, has been in the trade for almost 20 years and his work has taken him to many of the world’s top wine regions. ‘It’s always inspiring to discover new wines when I’m out in vineyards chatting with winemakers – and I enjoy helping make these available to our customers at great prices.’ Here, Ed gives his top picks from our award-winning range.

The Wine Atlas Ventoux, France, 2015, £5

Casa Luis Gran Reserva, Spain, 2011, £6

The wine atlas minervois, France, 2015, £5

Looking for a fresh vibrant, red? Well, look no further than this one from the Ventoux region in Southern France. It’s light, fruity, with the taste of ripe summer berry flavours. Wine buffs will get a hint of vanilla but all you really need to know is that it’s deliciously easy to drink. CHEESE MATCH This red goes well with a rich, buttery cheese like Extra Special Camembert De Pays, £2.20 (250g; 88p/100g) or 2 for £3.50.

The Spanish tipple scooped a gold at this year’s International Wine & Spirits Competition so you know you’re in for a treat. Aged in oak barrels, this purple-hued red has layers of flavour including blackcurrants and black cherries, followed by coffee and dark chocolate. CHEESE MATCH Try with bold-flavoured hard cheeses, such as mature Cheddar or Extra Special Manchego, £2.70 (150g; £1.80/100g) or 2 for £3.50.

If you want a taste of France without the travel costs, this Grenache-based red wine is just the ticket. So meet your perfect table companion – complex but mellow, it has juicy blackcurrant and plum flavours, aromas of olive and herbs, and a warm peppery finale. Ooh la la! CHEESE MATCH Team this smooth red with a creamy mature Brie, such as Extra Special Brie De Pays, £2.20 (150g; £1.47/100g) or 2 for £3.50.

WINE

New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, 2016, £6

The Wine Atlas CocoCciola, Italy, 2016, £5

This stylish, hay-coloured and zesty wine from New Zealand’s muchloved Marlborough winemaking region has a rise-and-shine grapefruit freshness and punchy tropical fruit flavours. And it won a gold medal at this year’s International Wine Competition to boot! CHEESE MATCH Try this Sauvignon Blanc with a tangy goats’ cheese, such as Asda Soft Goats’ Cheese, £1.94 (125g; £1.55/100g) or 2 for £2.50.

A real find from the Abruzzo region in Central Italy, this silvery lemon white wine has loads of citrus and green apple flavours without being overpowering. It has the refreshing mineral finish and zippy acidity of a good Pinot Grigio – buonissimo! CHEESE MATCH This white works well with fresh, soft and milky mozzarella or Extra Special Burrata Mozzarella, was £2, now £1.40 (100g).

Extra Special Chardonnay, Australia, 2015/2016, £5 Chardonnay is often unfairly overlooked, but this example is a lovely golden wine that’s well balanced, with peachy flavours, biscuity notes and a palatecleansing crisp mineral finish. Another corker of a wine from Oz! CHEESE MATCH Team this Chardonnay with a mild goats’ cheese or a smooth, buttery Brie, such as Asda Cornish Brie, £2 (160g; £1.25/100g) or 2 for £3.50.

pieces overnight in yogurt and tandoori spices, then cook them in an open chargrill oven. Our lamb is coated in garam masala, coriander and mint, then slow-braised for over five hours, to develop more flavour and succulence. ‘It’s all about slow-cooking the onions, too, and adding the spices at precisely the right time. Lighter notes, like cardamom and cinnamon, will disappear if added too early. It takes a little more effort, but it’s worth it.’

Customers will always go for their favourites but they are more experimental now with Indian cuisine. These latest additions to our range will introduce new flavours from across India to compete with the classics – it’s restaurant-quality curry in the comfort of your own home.’

The 7-day

vegan challenge

Veganism has never been cooler – and with so many people giving it a go, we just had to try it out ourselves!

F

uelled by the wave of wellness bloggers and popular foodies such as the Hemsley sisters, the number of vegans in the UK has rocketed by 350% in the last 10 years*, with 42% of them aged between 15 and 34*. So, to figure out how we can better serve our vegan customers, Asda Innovations Chef Andrew Johnston and his colleagues challenged themselves to go vegan for seven days. Steering away from animal products, they had to try at least three new vegan foods, and ’fess up if they fell off the wagon. Here, Andrew, 30, ASDA INNOVATIONS CHEF ANDREW from Leeds, reveals how they got on...

Day one

This is going to be interesting! My first step is meal-planning for the week, so I need to work out what I can and can’t have. My wife Aneira and I don’t normally eat a lot of red meat – but fish and chicken, which we enjoy a few times a week, are out. So are eggs, my favourite for breakfast, and all other dairy products. I even have to say goodbye to fresh pasta, which contains egg, chocolate made with milk, and white wine, which is filtered using a fish by-product. I stock up on fresh fruit, veg, pulses and grains – shopping takes longer than usual as I have to check every label for ingredients, but it’s exciting thinking about the fresh recipes I’ll be trying out! Back home, I knock up a lovely bean and lentil salad for lunch, then make ratatouille for dinner – see the recipe on p54.

ANDREW’S VEGAN FIVE-BEAN CHILLI

Day two

I’m starting most days with oats made with almond milk, topped with fruit, nuts, seeds and maple syrup. It’s a far cry from fried eggs, but it gives me lots of energy. For lunch, instead of a chicken sarnie, it’s Moroccan couscous salad, then my five-bean chilli for dinner. Containing fibre and protein, beans are a good meat alternative – and I find they help keep me full. Hurrah!

Nut milk

It’s easy to make your own vegan nut milk using crushed cashews, almonds or hazelnuts. Soak a cup of nuts in water overnight, then drain and rinse. Put the nuts in a blender with more water, whizz until smooth then strain the milk through a piece of muslin. Use on cereals or in your tea and coffee.

Sweet potato, chickpea & cauliflower curry

A hearty, spicy dish full of texture and flavour – inspired by vibrant Indian cuisine. Enjoy with fragrant rice or in a flatbread wrap SERVES 4 READY IN 55 MINS PRICE PER SERVING 58p ● 100g diced sweet

potato, peeled and cut into 3cm cubes ● 1 onion, chopped ● 2 cloves garlic, crushed ● 1tbsp olive oil ● 1tsp cumin seeds ● 2½tbsp curry powder (Madras is good if you like a bit of heat!) ● 2tbsp tomato purée ● 400g can chopped tomatoes ● 1 reduced-salt vegetable stock cube, dissolved in 350ml hot water ● 215g can Asda Chickpeas in Water, rinsed and drained ● 100g cauliflower florets

● 300g rice ● 1 cardamom pod,

cracked

● 50g Grower’s

Selection Washed Baby Spinach ● 1tbsp chopped coriander, plus a sprig to garnish 1 Put the sweet potato in a pan and cover with water. Bring to the boil then reduce to a simmer for 10 mins. Rinse with cold water, drain, then set aside to cool. 2 In a large pan, over a medium heat, sauté the onion and garlic in the oil until softened and turning golden in colour. 3 Stir in the cumin seeds, curry powder and tomato purée then cook for 2-3 mins. (If needed, add a splash of the stock.)

Day three

Peckish for a snack at work, I grab a granola bar (admittedly it wasn’t quite as tasty as my usual Mars bar!). Then it’s a veggie curry for dinner – see recipe above. I’m not feeling too deprived, even when I see Aneira snacking on chocolate. Meanwhile, my colleague Mark shows his support by texting a photo of aubergine burgers, rubbed with miso

4 Stir in the chopped tomatoes, vegetable stock, 350ml hot water, chickpeas, cauliflower and parboiled sweet potato. Cover with the pan lid and allow to simmer on a medium heat for 20-30 mins, until the veg is tender. 5 Meanwhile, cook the rice according to the pack instructions, adding the cracked cardamom pod to the water to flavour the rice. 6 Remove the curry from the heat and stir in the spinach and coriander. Cover, to allow the leaves to steam, for 2 mins. 7 Serve the curry on the rice and garnish with a sprig of coriander.

powder, chargrilled and served with leaves foraged from his garden. Impressive!

Day four

Aneira has gone out for dinner with friends so, home alone, I rustle up some ratatouille in front of the TV. I’m still full from my lunch – some leftover fivebean chilli with a jacket potato and olive oil spread in place of butter. Chuffed, I give myself a high-five for how well I’ve done so far. Later that evening, I can’t resist a glass of nut milk I’ve made from scratch… the taste is really starting to grow on me!

For breakfast, it’s Cheerios and hazelnut milk, which is actually very tasty. Delicious. They contain a vitamin B12 fortifier derived from animal products – so that means I failed ASDA.COM/GROCERIES | 53

FOOD

Day six

Desperate for a fry-up, I use vegan ‘bacon’ to make butties. The rashers taste like a mixture of smokey-bacon crisps and luncheon meat, which is surprisingly good.

Day seven

It’s my final day and I knock up scrambled tofu with turmeric and sautéed onions, graze on fruit and seeds, then make my recipe for Mediterraneanstyle carrots, courgettes, beans and aubergines with baby potatoes in a parsley dressing.

The verdict

Going vegan for a week wasn’t easy, but it’s inspired me to eat more plant-based meals. I’ll never give up meat and dairy entirely, but now I often eat vegan without really noticing and there are great subsititues. Meal-planning is essential as it takes a while to work out what you can and can’t eat – which was the biggest hurdle for me. We’re brainstorming ideas at Asda, like creating a vegan symbol for packaging and developing own-brand vegan products like hazelnut milk. It was a week well-spent that will definitely help customers, too!

What is veganism? ● The Vegan Society

defines veganism as ‘a way of living which seeks to exclude all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose’. ● That means no meat, fish, dairy, eggs or honey, but normally lots of fruit, vegetables, nuts, grains, seeds and pulses. ● The Vegan Society’s

Dominika Piasecka says, ‘There are vegan versions of any dish you can think of, from sushi to scrambled eggs, as well as alternative products like vegan milk, cheese and ice cream.’ ● The Vegan Society runs a 30-Day Vegan Pledge for people interested in veganism. Classic ratatouille

A traditional French fave – and vegan, too! Great served hot with rice, or cold with salad SERVES 4 READY IN 1 HR 30 MINS PRICE PER SERVING 85p ● 1tbsp olive oil, plus

extra for greasing and brushing ● ¼tsp apple cider vinegar ● 400g can chopped tomatoes ● 1tsp frozen Scratch Cook Chopped Garlic ● 1tbsp chopped basil, plus whole leaves to garnish ● 1tsp Asda Herbes de Provence ● ¼tsp chilli powder ● 3 beef tomatoes, sliced 1cm thick ● 1 red onion, sliced 1cm thick ● 1 large courgette, sliced 1cm thick ● 1 large aubergine, sliced 1cm thick 1 Preheat the oven to 200C/180C Fan/Gas 6. Lightly grease a small rectangular ovenproof dish and set aside. 2 In a bowl, combine the olive oil, vinegar and chopped tomatoes. Stir in the garlic, chopped basil, herbs, chilli powder and a grind of black

pepper. Pour into the ovenproof dish and smooth into an even layer. 3 Arrange the vegetable slices in neat rows, with alternating colours – try tomato, onion, courgette, aubergine, then repeat. You may find it easier to build 3-4 evenly sized stacks from all the veg, then place them side by side in the dish. Don’t cram them in too tightly – the slices should spread out slightly and rest against each other at an angle when put in the dish. 4 Spray or brush the tops of the veg slices with a tiny amount of oil, to encourage them to turn golden in the oven. This is more for appearance, so feel free to skip this step, if you prefer. 5 Bake for 1 hr, until the sauce is bubbling hot and the veggies are tender. Serve garnished with extra basil.

on day five. Gah! Anyway, it’s Friday, so to show their support, the team heads to Hyde Park Book Club – a vegetarian ‘butcher’ and restaurant in Leeds. We try the ‘beef’ chilli and burger, which taste just like the real deal, and the they-can’tbelieve-it’s-not-chicken burger. Made from seitan, a meat substitute derived from wheat, it has the same texture and taste as poultry. Our colleague Sarah-Jayne, who’s off today, posts a pic of herself drinking Little Creatures, a vegan Australian beer. Like white wine, many beers aren’t suitable for vegans.

amily is at the heart of everything I do. I grew up in my parents’ pub and was lucky enough to be surrounded by beautiful ingredients and home-cooked food. I have fond memories of doing the weekly shop with my mum – we’d sometimes have a mini picnic in the car before driving home. Keeping a dish simple immediately makes feeding your loved ones that little bit easier – and is a godsend when family life is superbusy but you still want food with flavours that really sing. This salmon recipe is an Oliver family favourite and something we come back to time and again. I’ve written the recipe to serve two, and Jools and I often tuck in on a weeknight together, but it’s also really easy to scale up to feed more. Made with just five ingredients, bursting with summery flavours, and ready in 11 minutes flat, the kids – and Jools! – go nuts for it, and I feel happy knowing that they have eaten a decent plate of food. I hope you enjoy it as much as we do… 5 Ingredients: Quick & Easy Food by Jamie Oliver is published by Penguin Random House

fillets, from sustainable sources 300g ripe mixedcolour cherry tomatoes 4 sprigs of fresh basil 8 black olives (stone in) 30g higher-welfare chorizo

*Serves two, though can easily be multiplied to serve more. The recipe consists of five main ingredients, plus store-cupboard staples

1 Put the salmon flesh side down in a large cold non-stick frying pan and place on a medium-high heat. As the pan comes up to temperature and the salmon begins to sizzle (about 3 mins), flip it over and cook on the skin side for 5 mins, or until very crisp and just cooked (depending on its thickness).

2 Meanwhile, halve the cherry tomatoes, tear up most of the basil leaves, then toss it all with 1tbsp red wine vinegar and black pepper. Squash the olives and discard the stones, then finely chop the flesh. Mix with 1sp extra virgin olive oil and a splash of water. 3 Finely slice the chorizo, add to the pan for the last 2 mins, then toss in the dressed tomatoes for 30 secs. Divide between your plates, with the salmon on top. Spoon over the dressed olives and pick over the remaining basil.

Making the kids’ packed lunches delicious and nutritious can be a challenge, but luckily we have upgrades to keep everyone happy!

C

oming up with packed lunches for school can be tricky – they need to include food kids will enjoy and tick all the health boxes. With more than half of all children in primary schools bringing in their own meals, it’s no wonder many busy parents end up resorting to the simple but less-thanideal combo of a ham sandwich, piece of fruit, chocolate biscuit and crisps. A recent study* by the University of Leeds found that fewer than two out of every 100 lunchboxes belonging to primary-aged children met the same strict standards that are now in place for school dinners. It’s worth checking with your child’s school for their individual lunchbox guidelines, but here’s how to swap a typical lunchbox for five healthier packed lunches. They’re easy to make – and tasty enough to be a hit with the kids! *Source: http://bit.ly/2bTx23v

FOOD

The base

Before White bread is often the choice for sandwiches but it contains less fibre than wholegrain varieties. Children aged 5-10 years need 20g of fibre each day. Swap for Wholegrain rolls, wraps, pittas, bagels or oatcakes for variety and to boost fibre. Or use leftover wholemeal pasta or noodles, brown rice or potatoes as the base for a salad (just make sure it’s been refrigerated and stored safely).

The filling

The veg

Before Ham is a popular go-to filling but it’s high in fat and saturates. Swap for Fillings that add protein and minerals like iron and zinc. Try eggs, tinned tuna, salmon, sardines, mackerel, cooked prawns, egg, peanut butter and houmous.

The fruit The treat Before Crisps and/or a chocolate biscuit. Apart from not even being allowed as part of school dinners, crisps are often high in fat and salt, and contain few beneficial nutrients. Chocolate – including any in biscuits – are also banned from school meals and are high in fat, saturates and sugar. Swap for Plain popcorn, mini packs of breadsticks, pots of sugar-free jelly, fruit or malt loaf, or small fruit scones, which are ones with lower levels of sugar and saturated fat.

Before A whole apple. While this is a great, healthy choice, many kids leave it uneaten when it’s not in bite-size pieces. Swap for Cubes of melon, pineapple or mango, tubs or pots of fruit salad in fruit juice (not syrup), and small amounts of dried fruit like raisins or apricots. All provide fibre, vitamins and minerals. Grapes are also a good choice but halve these to avoid a choking hazard.

Before Again, this is something that tends to be missing from many kids’ lunchboxes. Swap for A little tub of carrot, celery or pepper sticks, sugar snap peas or halved cherry tomatoes. Pulses – beans, peas and lentils – count as veg too. They’re a great source of fibre and add a variety of vitamins and minerals.

The dairy Before We often forget to add a serving of calcium, which is important for the growth and development of children’s bones. Swap for A small portion of reduced-fat cheese (this can go into a sandwich or salad), a pot of yogurt, fromage frais, rice pudding or reduced-fat custard or a small carton or bottle of reduced-fat milk. These foods are all rich in calcium.

The drink

Before A carton of juice drink. This will often contain loads of sugar. Swap for Water is the best drink to include. Lower-fat milk is also a good choice. Skip drinks that contain added sugar and if you’re going to include fruit juice, stick to a 150ml serving and top it up with water. ASDAGOODLIVING.CO.UK | 63

Try dried apricots or raisins instead of cranberries in the cookies or sprinkle your popcorn with mild fajita spice to give it a Mexican twist. HANDS ON Involve your little ones in the fun jobs, such as dipping the bananas in the pink mixture and pistachios – they’ll love getting their hands messy and it’s a great way to make them excited about eating fruit. veg for their 5-a-day – the sneaky way! l Hidden veg can fool even the pickiest eater. Mix finely chopped or grated carrots, broccoli or peppers into mince or pasta sauce and they’ll eat it without realising. l Try 5-a-day versions of other foods. Mash fans may like root-veg purées, while cauliflower blitzed in a processor is similar to rice. Spiralise squash for spaghetti fans.

DINNER from the freezer

l As their tastebuds get used to the flavours, try adding sweet, colourful veggies to their favourite meals. Halved cherry tomatoes are perfect for this, as are frozen vegetables such as peas and sweetcorn. l Involve them in making their own food – topping pizzas with corn or diced peppers, and making wraps with salad fillings.

F NUTRITIONIST QUESTION

Are there any easy ways to make home-cooked meals a bit healthier?

‘There are plenty of things you can do to help you cook healthier dishes. ‘For instance, if you use oils, always measure them out – 1tbsp adds about 125 calories and 14g fat to your meal. ‘Add pulses such as beans, peas and lentils to your meals. They’re naturally low in fat, high in fibre and provide protein. Three heaped tablespoons also count as 1 of your 5 a day. Why not replace some of the meat in your spag bol with lentils? ‘Fruit and veg should make up about a third of the food we eat – aim for at least 5 a day. Frozen options count and are easy to add to your meals – usually without the chopping!’ Beth Fowler, Assistant Nutritionist Try our Scratch Cook frozen veg range – no chopping, no mess, no fuss!

F CHEF’S QUESTION

How can I use cheaper cuts of meat in midweek dishes? Where can I find a showstopping cake for my child’s birthday?

You don’t need Bake Off skills to serve an amazing cake at your child’s birthday party – find the perfect, showstopping centrepiece in store. Our beautiful Unicorn Cake*, £10 is the perfect treat, our interactive Crash Cake*, £15 will wow little guests and our amazing Strawberry & White Chocolate Freakshake Cake*, £12, inspired by the popular trend, has loads of yummy extra toppings. These are just part of our huge range of cakes for all ages and special occasions. Our classic Marble Cake*, £12 (below) is sure to steal the show at any grown-up party or celebration!

‘Don’t be afraid to try some more unusual cuts. Brisket (below), is pretty cheap and there’s always plenty to go around. Put it in the slow cooker with Mexican fajita seasoning, then serve with tacos for a tea that will wow the kids. ‘Eat a lot of chicken? Opt for thighs once in a while instead of breasts – as well as costing less, I find they’re juicier and more flavourful. I make korma chicken thighs that are really delicious and super-quick – just rub the meat with korma curry paste and some garlic, coriander, a squeeze of lemon and yogurt, then bake in the oven and serve over white rice. ‘Beef or turkey mince is also ideal for eating on a budget, but if you’re bored of spag bol try Greek Moussaka-style meatballs instead. Bake them in the oven on top of big pieces of aubergine and a nice tomato sauce for a Mediterranean-style dish.’ Mark Richmond, Innovations Development Chef

How can I make dinner fun without taking the kids to eat out?

Save your pennies and get them involved at home. Ask them to help you rustle up their own dinner with our Mexican-inspired Fajita, Enchilada and Nacho Kits, £1.50 each. Then serve a delicious pud that you can create together using one of our Make Your Own Ice Cream kits, £1.50 each. Just whisk in the milk, add the extras and freeze for a few hours to enjoy some Caramel Delight, Vanilla Dream or Chocolate Heaven. 84 | ASDA.COM

Autumn Glow The cooler months can play havoc on your skin, so now’s the time to revamp your beauty routine!

A

utumn is the season of transition – and the perfect time to rethink your beauty regime. The summer months may have left your skin looking and feeling drier than normal*, so it might need a little replenishing. But it’s also important to take key steps to prepare skin for the colder, dehydrating months ahead. So we asked two beauty experts – top blogger Victoria Brown from vickisbeauty.com and make-up guru Carly Hobbs – to give the lowdown on our new offerings. Plus, we’ve got all the top tips you’ll need...

‘The nspa Nightly Repair Cream is a real revelation. It is luxurious to the touch and wasn’t greasy when applied. My skin feels so much softer and looks a lot smoother as a result!’ CARLY HOBBS, BEAUTY EXPERT AND CELEBRITY MAKE-UP ARTIST

THE TRIPLE CLEANSE On hot summer days, a quick facewash may have done the trick, but now that temperatures are starting to drop you’ll need to keep your skin properly moisturised and exfoliated. Luckily this is super-easy to achieve, just follow these three simple steps… HOW TO Start out with Garnier Pure Micellar Cleansing Water, £5 (400ml) to help lift make-up or grime, then follow with nspa Hot Cloth Polish – this cleanses, exfoliates and brightens all in one. Wipe away any excess with a muslin cloth, then use Simple Kind To Skin Hydrating Facial Cleansing Oil for an even deeper clean.

‘nspa Hot Cloth Polish reminds me so much of the Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish. It’s great for giving your skin that deep cleanse to get rid of any remaining make-up and impurities.’ BEAUTY BLOGGER VICTORIA BROWN, FROM VICKI’S BEAUTY

THE INSTANT REVIVER Whether your skin looks a bit dull or has annoyingly reverted to its teenage state, a well-chosen face mask can give it the boost it needs. HOW TO Try a 10-minute face mask once a week – all you need is the right one for you. If your skin needs a bit of freshening up, Montagne Jeunesse 7th Heaven Charcoal Face Mask, £1 (15g) helps draw out impurities. Suffering with dull skintone? L’Oréal Pure Clay Glow Mask, was £8, now £6** (50ml) contains finely milled apricot seeds to gently exfoliate skin,

and is enriched with red algae extract, known for its brightening properties*. Finally, if you’re looking for a moisture boost, nspa Intense Hydration Overnight Mask, £6 (75ml) is your sleeping-beauty hero. It sinks in fast and works as you snooze. Bonus!

For bedtime beautifying, try Asda The Skin System Radiance Night Cream. The rosehip oil and cocoa butter refresh skin in time for the morning!

‘The nspa Facial Cleansing Brush did a brilliant job of removing all my make-up residue and my skin felt so soft afterwards. After a few days of use, my complexion had a constant glow.’ CARLY HOBBS, BEAUTY EXPERT AND CELEBRITY MAKE-UP ARTIST

THE PORE PERFECTORS Autumn is the ideal time to declog pores blocked by dirt and excess product that leads to blackheads. HOW TO Either opt for nspa Facial Cleansing Brush alongside your favourite cleanser; a pore strip that can be used over your nose and chin (Bioré Ultra Deep Cleansing Pore Strips, 6-pack, was £8, now £4* are great); or a pore eraser that can be used over moisturiser and under foundation, such as Maybelline New York Baby Skin Pore Eraser Primer, was £8, now £6** (22ml).

THE HYDRATION HIT

Lips can feel dry as autumn sets in, so gently buff with nspa Micro Detox Scrub, £5, once a week to keep them smooth and kissable! 92 | ASDA.COM/GROCERIES

HOW TO Apply some serum across freshly washed, slightly damp skin. Choose one that contains hyaluronic acid – this is made naturally in the body but needs a topical top-up, as it helps skin cells hold on to more moisture. We love Nivea Q10 Plus Anti-Wrinkle Serum Pearls. Then, add a few drops of L’Oréal Extraordinary Facial Oil to help seal in all the serum goodness. Next up, a rich hydrating cream that will leave your complexion glowing. Try nspa’s Radiance Day Cream, £6 (50ml).

Nivea Q10 Plus Anti-Wrinkle Serum Pearls, £14 (40ml); nspa Facial Cleansing Brush, £15; L’Oréal Extraordinary Facial Oil, was £20, now £14.99† (30ml)

‘Having a newborn is

no walk in the park’ Cute baby pics on your social media feed doesn’t always mean motherhood’s a breeze, says The Oliver’s Madhouse blogger and mum-of-three Jaime Oliver

A

fter nine months of planning and then bringing a life into the world, you’d have thought you’d be prepared for having a baby. Well, you’re not. Whether it’s number one or three, we all think having a newborn in our arms will be nothing but magical. In many ways, it is. But it’s not easy, either. For me, having given birth by emergency caesarean to my daughter Beth, now 16, the joy was tempered by having to ring a buzzer in the hospital bathroom a few days later because I had been trying for 45 minutes to pull up my pants… With wet pants from the shower floor, one wide-open door and my lady garden on show to three more midwives, a passing junior 118 | ASDA.COM

doctor and a male patient from Bed 4A, this is what it took for it to hit home that being a new mum was certainly not necessarily going to be an easy ride. MIXED EMOTIONS With Joshua, my second child, I waited patiently for the fluffy, happy feeling to kick in. And it did in the end.

But not before an emotional meltdown which I blame on hormones and lack of sleep. And my poor husband was on the receiving end of it. I spent three days in tears over everything; no balanced individual would cry over utensils being in the wrong spots in the kitchen drawer or the microwave being too loud

at teatime. And no one warns you about boob leakage. I leaked from everywhere imaginable in front of anyone in my vicinity, embarrassing myself on many occasions. I fear the lady in my local shop will never be able to look me in the eyes again after one sorry episode. But that aside, it is a very special time and you’re lucky to get a beautiful mini human, even if they do come with a lot of ‘stuff’. So much stuff, in fact, it can take hours just to pack for a stroll to the shops. DAILY DILEMMAS What you will need more than anything else for this is baby wipes. It only took a full-on poo-nami to the face from Joshua, now five, for me to understand the value of these. The good news is that decent

What they can’t do is stop is your husband laughing hysterically at your misfortune. But the realities of having a newborn extend so much further. A good ‘debate’ over how the baby seat fits safely into the car is always fun. You’ll find yourself wishing you had a degree in engineering, or could at least recall how the previous two car seats fitted. And let’s talk about breast pumps. These have an ability of catching you out – from the window cleaner seeing your milking stations during Corrie, to being on the phone when

the suction fails and makes a rude noise. LEARNING CURVE No one ever tells you about the joy of parenting a baby with an older sibling. For me, having baby Jacob, now 18 months, and Joshua, in the same room was fine until I nipped to the loo and returned to find Joshua, then four, dragging fiveweek-old Jacob across the living room floor by his feet. But despite all this, you grow in confidence as a mum each day, and the memory of all the trials and tribulations you faced begin to fade. Then one day you surprise yourself by thinking how wonderful it would be to do it all over again...

Keep your dog’s tail wagging by giving them all the tender love and care they deserve, says vet Dr Zara Boland

rom a slobbery lick to a snuggle on the sofa, dogs are never short of ways to show just how much they love you. And the benefits to us are not just the surge of feel-good hormones. Research suggests having a dog can help lower our blood pressure and reduce stress* – and also make us exercise daily and meet other people. So what’s the best way to show your canine companion just how much you care?

a safe pet Choose appropriate food for their age and lifestyle and pet-proof your home – some foods, plants and household products can be poisonous**. Check your dog’s body condition using the World Small Animal Veterinary Association guide on YouTube (search ‘WSAVA condition’). And be prepared for regular vet visits, as well as flea, tick and worming treatments. Don’t forget to get your dog neutered or spayed, too. As

well as preventing pups, this can help reduce potential aggression and wandering. Fit them with a microchip and ID tag – and update your address with the microchip company if you move house.

SOCIAL animal One key thing is to make him central to your family. Dogs crave love, attention and companionship, so get them involved with what’s going on at home as much as possible. Even if you’re all just relaxing in the same room together, it gives your dog a warm feeling of belonging. It’s vital to allow your dog to socialise whenever possible as it will

help them build confidence with new people, situations and other pets.

WAlk this way It’s crucial to know how much exercise is needed. Active dogs need active owners: border collies need at least twice-daily long walks and off-leash play in a safe area. Dogs love playing games with you and thrive on your attention. When you’re not there, invest in activity puzzle games to keep them busy, motivated and rewarded, too. Look after your dog well and they’ll feel safe and loved – and your relationship will reap the rewards.

Alice Potter, from Portsmouth, adopted labrador crossbreed Bowie, eight, from a rescue charity six years ago. Alice says: ‘Bowie is very much part of the family and I try to respect his needs, giving him affection, playing with him and walking him three times a day come rain or shine! He has arthritis so we keep an eye on his medication and diet. After his difficult start in life, it feels so special to see him so relaxed and happy.’

Rosie. We were lucky enough to travel a lot as she was growing up so she was exposed to all sorts of food and she was never a fussy eater. I was sensible but never made food a big issue and nothing was forbidden. The kids who came to our house ‘NOTHING WAS and were banned FORBIDDEN’ from junk food always made a beeline for the biscuit tin! Did you and Rosie cook together? I’m the world’s worst cook, but we did melt chocolate and throw in cornflakes and Rice Krispies to make easy cakes. Did you ever have an unhealthy diet? As Scottish correspondent for TV-am in the ’80s, I had crazy hours and just grabbed food when I could – pies and sandwiches from garages, and filling up on crisps and sweets. Are you into so-called ‘superfoods’? I do like coconut and berries, but it’s all about balance and eating a little bit of what you fancy. Faddy diets don’t work and end up making you fat. You need a plan for life, with food you love and exercise you enjoy. Your go-to hangover cure? A roll with butter, Scottish square sausage and lots of HP Sauce, washed down with Irn Bru. Never fails! Dinner-party dish? I can cook a really good paella, served with crusty bread and plenty of Rioja. Your most memorable dining-out experience? In Singapore, back in 1985 – the first time we visited the Far East. We had beer and satay in a hawker’s stall, sitting outside under the stars. It cost about 50p and tasted like heaven.
