Apparently, your school days are the best days of your life – and, although I beg to differ on this, I absolutely loved school dinners! Queuing up for second servings of jam sponge and custard Sarah Thom was my idea of heaven, so I’m excited to say that Asda Editor we have recipes to take you back to those glory days (p53).

For the kids, it’s already holiday season, and we have clever ideas to keep them busy and help you get dinner on the table faster (p44). I’ll be cooking up a storm with my niece and nephew, with them helping me roll the green pea falafels for their tea!

The cauliflower is making a comeback from last-resort veg to social media sensation. In season now, it works really well with robust flavours like parmesan, ginger and anchovies. Serve it mashed and buttered like you would with potatoes, cooked in spices for a tasty veggie curry, or tossed in a sweet-and-sour sticky sauce then fried for an alternative to chicken wings.

Florets roasted with olive oil and balsamic vinegar make a great side with a deliciously nutty bite, or try adding macaroni to an old-school cauliflower cheese then top it with breadcrumbs for a comforting and cost-effective family supper. Yum!

Salmon & vegetable bake

1 Preheat the oven to 180C/160C Fan/Gas 4.

2 Put the potatoes in a pan of cold water, bring to the boil and cook for 8-10 mins. Drain.

3 Put the salmon fillets skin-side down in a roasting tin and arrange the potatoes, tomatoes and asparagus around

them. Drizzle over the oil and season with freshly ground black pepper.

1 Heat a griddle or frying pan over a high setting.

2 Stir together the Moroccan seasoning and rapeseed oil and rub into both sides of the chops.

Cook on the griddle for 3-4 mins each side, until the chops are starting to char.

3 Make up the cous cous according to the pack instructions. When ready, transfer to a serving platter.

FOR THE CAKE l 225g Asda Best for Baking Cakes Spread l 225g caster sugar l 4 eggs, beaten l Zest and 2tbsp juice from 1 large orange l 225g self-raising flour l 1tsp baking powder TO DECORATE l 100ml Pimm’s l 300g strawberries, chopped, plus 3 halved, to decorate

2 Whisk all the cake ingredients for 3-4 mins

until light and fluffy. Divide between the tins and bake for 20-25 mins until golden brown. Leave to cool in the tins for 5 mins, then turn out and cool completely.

3 Put the Pimm’s and chopped strawberries in a small pan and simmer for 10-15 mins until thickened and spreadable. Pour onto a plate and leave to cool completely.

4 Slice each cake in half horizontally. Whip the cream until stiff then fold in the yogurt. Stand 1 cake half on a plate and spread

with ⅓ of the cream.

Drizzle over ⅓ of the strawberry mixture and spread gently. Repeat twice. Top with the last cake half.

5 Use a veg peeler to cut ribbons of cucumber and pat them dry with kitchen paper. Arrange on top of the cake with the orange slices, strawberry halves and mint. Dust the edges with icing sugar and serve.

l 2 limes l 175g Asda Best for Baking Cakes Spread l 3 eggs l 225g caster sugar l 150g self-raising flour l 10g desiccated coconut l 50ml white rum l 10 mint leaves plus extra, to decorate 1 Preheat the oven to 180C/ 160C Fan/Gas 4. Grease and line a 21cm loaf tin.

2 Peel the zest from 1 lime and slice into thin slivers.

Set aside. Finely zest the other lime, then juice both limes.

3 Put the spread, eggs, 175g of the caster sugar, the flour, coconut and ½ the finely grated lime zest in a bowl. Whisk for 2-3 mins until fluffy.

Spoon into the loaf tin and bake for 25 mins.

Cover loosely with foil

and bake for a further 20-25 mins until golden.

4 Put the lime juice, rum, mint, remaining finely grated zest and the remaining 50g caster sugar in a pan. Bubble for 3-4 mins until syrupy.

Leave to infuse for 5 mins.

5 Prick the top of the cake with a fork and drizzle over the syrup. Leave to cool completely in the tin.

6 Top with the slivers of zest and extra mint leaves.

3 Put 4tbsp limoncello and 4tbsp water in a glass bowl over a pan of simmering water. Stir in the gelatine, heat until melted, then stir until smooth. Remove the bowl from the pan and set aside for 10 mins to cool.

4 Beat the soft cheese, yogurt, icing sugar and remaining limoncello until light and fluffy. Finely grate the zest from 1 lemon and beat into the mixture with 2tbsp juice from the lemon and the cooled gelatine mixture. Spoon over the biscuit base and chill for 2-3 hrs until set.

5 To decorate, stir the lemon curd until runny, then drizzle over the cheesecake.

Slice into 12 pieces. Cut the remaining lemon into wedges to decorate.

hen carbonara started appearing on the dinner table at our home in Essex, the creamy egg-and-cheese combo was a real novelty. We were used to having tomato-based sauces with our pasta – Dad would bring home tubs of delicious creations from his restaurant.

With carbonara, it was always a fight to find the portion containing the most bacon. Whoever got the last spoonful from the pan – where all the bacon had got nice and crispy on the bottom – was always the luckiest.

When I think of Dad’s carbonara, I’m taken right back to childhood dinnertimes and conversations about school, Mum’s day working as an estate agent and the fun and games from Dad’s busy restaurant.

The best times were our annual six-week pilgrimages to Valva and, in the last few years, we’ve all started returning again together as a family.

It’s so nice now because I have two sons, Buzz is four and Buddy is two, and Giorgina has her own daughter, Summer Rae, who is 18 months. The kids can experience what we had when we were children – freedom in the beautiful outdoors and the never-ending sunshine.

Our family holidays in Valva are bliss. It’s so remote there’s no phone signal, which means we just get to enjoy being together, drinking great wine and eating amazing food.

Especially Dad’s carbonara.

Family is so important to us, so it’s nice that we’re passing that message down to the next generation of Falcones and Fletchers.

G

iovanna and I are really close and we’ve always had a great relationship. That doesn’t mean we didn’t squabble, though. I used to tell our parents that both my older sisters, Giovanna and Giorgina, used to beat me up. They never actually touched me – I was just trying to cause trouble. I was a little devil!

My fondest family memories are of summer holidays in the mountain village in southern Italy where Dad, Mario Snr, grew up – a beautiful place called Valva. He lived there until he was 19, when he followed in the footsteps of his brothers, Anselmo and Gerardo, and sister, Rosina, and moved to the UK. Dad had lots of jobs – at one point he was a hotel porter. Then he and his siblings opened a café in Dagenham, which they called Mario’s. Over the years, they launched restaurants all over Essex.

Our mum, Kim, was the queen of homemade profiteroles, but desserts were a rarity in our house because Dad’s dinners were always the main event. He’d serve up weird concoctions like chili con carne with frankfurters, which sounds horrendous but totally worked.

When he started making this carbonara recipe, he’d experiment with different ingredients, and one time he used sausage instead of bacon. As we got older, he added in mushrooms, which had mixed reviews from us kids – most of the time, we’d just push them to the side of the plate! But his classic version was, and still is, the best.

1 Bring a large pan of water to the boil and cook the pasta for 10-12 mins, until tender. Reserve

150ml of the cooking water from the pan, then drain well.

2 While the pasta is draining, cook the bacon in a deep-sided frying pan, over a medium heat, until crisp.

3 In a bowl, stir together the egg yolks and grated Parmesan. Add a splash of the reserved pasta water and mix well.

4 Reduce the heat on the frying pan to low. Add the drained pasta

and the rest of the reserved water, then stir well.

5 Take the pan off of the heat and pour in the egg mixture, stirring constantly to coat the spaghetti.

Season with freshly ground black pepper and serve immediately.

4 In a dry frying pan, toast the walnuts and almonds

5 Mix the yogurt, harissa and lemon for the dressing.

6 Top the cous cous with the cooled veg, nuts, feta and pomegranate seeds.

Toss, drizzle over the dressing and serve with the toasted pitta strips.

1 Preheat the oven to 200C/180C Fan/Gas 6.

Line a 12-hole muffin tin with paper cases.

2 To make the crumble topping, mix together 50g porridge oats, 25g plain flour and 25g golden caster sugar in a bowl. Cut 50g unsalted butter into small pieces then rub into the flour mixture using your fingertips until it looks like breadcrumbs. Set aside.

Rhubarb & custard ice cream

1 Put 400g rhubarb, chopped, 75g caster sugar and 100ml Pom Wonderful 100% Pomegranate Juice into a pan. Easy rhubarb curd

1 Put 400g Grower’s Selection Rhubarb, chopped, in a large pan with 50ml water. Bring to a simmer, then cover and cook for 10 mins, or until the fruit is softened and broken down.

1 Heat 1tsp rapeseed oil.

Add 1 onion, chopped, and cook for 3 mins. Add 50g golden caster sugar and 2cm ginger, grated. Cook for 5 mins. Stir in 2tbsp red wine vinegar, 2 sprigs thyme and 1 star anise (optional). Top up with 100ml water and bring to a simmer. Cook for 10 mins.

A layer of prosciutto adds a mouthwatering twist to this pastry-wrapped joint SERVES 10 READY IN 1 HR 30 MINS, PLUS COOLING PRICE PER SERVING £2.04

● Extra Special 28 Day Matured British Beef Joint (about 1.4kg), trimmed ● 2tbsp rapeseed oil ● 500g block puff pastry ● Plain flour, for dusting ● 2 shallots, finely chopped ● 2 cloves garlic, crushed ● 1tbsp chopped thyme ● 300g chestnut mushrooms, roughly chopped ● 70g Asda Italian Prosciutto ● 1 egg, beaten

1 Preheat the oven to 220C/200C Fan/Gas 7.

2 Rub the beef fillet all over with 1tbsp of the oil. Season generously with freshly ground black pepper.

3 Heat a large, nonstick frying pan on high and brown the beef all over.

Put on a baking tray and roast for 20 mins. Remove from the oven and set aside to cool completely.

4 Dust a work surface with flour.

Roll out ⅓ of the pastry until 1cm wider than the piece of beef on all sides. Put on a lined baking tray, prick all over with a fork and bake in the oven for 15 mins until golden.

Remove from the oven and leave to cool completely.

5 Heat the remaining 1tbsp oil in a pan over a medium heat, add the shallots, cover and cook for 5 mins until softened. Remove the lid, add the garlic and thyme and cook for 2 mins.

Remove from the pan and set aside.

6 Increase the heat to high, add the mushrooms to the pan and cook for 4-5 mins until golden.

7 Put the shallots and mushrooms in a blender and pulse until you have a coarse pâté. Season with freshly ground black pepper and set aside to cool completely.

8 Stand the beef on the cooked pastry. Pat the pâté over the beef and arrange the prosciutto on top, overlapping the slices slightly.

Glaze the pastry edges with egg.

9 Dust the work surface with more flour and roll out the remaining piece of puff pastry until it is large enough to cover the beef. Wrap the pastry over the beef, sealing the edges well by pinching together.

Trim the pastry to neaten.

10 Use the pastry trimmings to make a St George’s flag shape (see picture on previous page) and arrange on top of the Wellington. Brush all over with more beaten egg.

11 Bake the Wellington on the middle shelf of the oven for 10 mins. Reduce the oven to 200C/180C Fan/Gas 6 and cook for a further 20 mins until the pastry is golden. Leave to rest for 15 mins before serving with Roasted Tenderstem Broccoli.

1 Preheat the oven to 170C/150C Fan/Gas 3.

2 Toss the steak and kidney in the flour until well coated. Season generously with freshly ground black pepper.

3 Heat 1tbsp of the oil in a large hobproof casserole dish, add half the floured meat and cook until browned, stirring often. Remove with a slotted spoon and set aside.

Repeat with the rest of the meat and set aside with the first batch.

Add the onion, carrots and celery to the pan and cook, stirring, for 3-4 mins until softened but not browned.

4 Return the meat to the pan with the parsley, thyme, Worcestershire sauce, stock cubes, bay leaves and a grind of black pepper. Gradually stir in 700ml boiling water until combined.

Bring to the boil, then transfer to the oven and braise for 1 hr. Cover the dish then cook for a further 1 hr until the meat is tender and the gravy has thickened. Remove from the oven and set aside to cool completely.

● 570ml milk ● 1 onion, cut into quarters ● 2 bay leaves ● 3 peppercorns ● 1kg baking potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks ● 40g unsalted butter ● 1tbsp Dijon mustard ● Finely grated zest 1 lemon ● 1 leek, sliced diagonally ● 30g plain flour ● 2 x 340g packs Asda Fish Pie Mix ● 2tbsp chives, chopped ● 75g Frozen for Freshness British Garden Peas

1 Preheat the oven to 180C/160C Fan/Gas 4.

2 Put all but 2tbsp of the milk, the onion, bay leaves and peppercorns in a pan and bring to the boil. Take off the heat immediately and set aside.

3 Meanwhile, put the potatoes in a pan of water and bring to the boil.

Simmer for 15-20 mins until tender.

Drain and leave to stand for 5 mins.

4 Return the potatoes to the pan with 20g of the butter, the mustard, lemon zest and the remaining 2tbsp milk.

Mash until smooth. Put in a piping bag with a large star attachment.

5 Heat the rest of the butter in a pan

with the leek, cover and cook for 10 mins, stirring occasionally. Stir in the flour and cook for 1 min, stirring.

Strain the milk into the pan, discarding the bay leaves, onion and peppercorns.

6 Stir the fish, chives and peas into the sauce. Pour into a 2L ovenproof dish. Pipe the mash on top. Put the dish on a baking tray and bake for 30-40 mins until golden. Serve with a side of Green Beans with Garlic Oil & Hazelnuts.

When Paul Biddulph, 70, a retired businessman from Potters Bar, thinks back to his school days, it’s all about the custard ‘I have very fond memories of school dinners – I’d happily eat anything!

The food we had in the late 1950s was basic but pretty good quality. And I loved that warm “stew” smell, which let you know there was plenty of stodgy comfort food to be had after playing outside in the cold.

My brother Ian is a bit older and he remembers the post-war rationing. He had to suffer gristly minced beef and soggy potatoes, but my dinners were pretty decent – fish and spuds, sausage stew with mashed swede and spam fritters, all piled high with cabbage.

With the shortage of sweets, school pudding was the one treat of the day, and my favourite was the jam and coconut sponge. Every Thursday, we’d watch as the cooks brought out a large tray of steaming sponge. It had a scattering of coconut on the top and was one of those filling puds you really looked forward to. We were allowed to pour on the thick, pink custard ourselves – I’d totally cover mine so you couldn’t even see the sponge!

When I hear about my granddaughters’ meals, I’m astonished.

Things like fajitas and homemade chocolate and pear cake – they sound a lot posher than anything I had!’

‘There’s always room for pudding in my book’ Our Good Living content planner, Amy Cawthorne, 30, from Leeds, has fond memories of a gooey cereal pudding ‘I clearly remember being the last kid left in the canteen at primary school.

I was a super-slow eater and, every lunchtime, the dinner ladies would stand over us, checking we’d cleared our plates before they let us go out to play.

I hated the beetroot they served with almost every meal. I’d push it around my plate of chicken pie and duchesse potatoes until it was the only thing left.

What got me through it was the thought of tucking into pudding – whether it was Wellington fudge cake and custard, semolina and jam or my favourite – a gooey corn flake tart.

Our school food was hearty and homely – even on a hot summer’s day,

they would serve pie and cheesy mash. But the puddings were so popular, the dinner ladies actually made a little printed book with all of our favourite recipes inside. My mum bought a copy for us and me and my older sister Helen would spend Saturday afternoons making our favourites to serve with Sunday lunch.

Helen loved corn flake tart, too, and we’d both be excited to see it on the menu. Now it seems like such a weird recipe – it was essentially carbs on carbs – but, back then, it was just so good.

A chewy mix of corn flakes stuck together with syrup, topped with lashings of custard. I’m sure it wouldn’t be allowed on a school menu these days, if Jamie Oliver had anything to do with it, but we loved it!’

l 375g pack Asda Ready Rolled Shortcrust Pastry l 5tbsp Asda Reduced Sugar Strawberry Jam l 150ml golden syrup, warmed l 125g corn flakes 1 Preheat the oven to 200C/ 180C Fan/Gas 6. Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface to the thickness of a pound coin. Use it to line a 20cm flan tin or dish.

Prick the base, lay a piece

‘I loved the combo of sponge and ice-cream!’ it with a massive dollop of baked beans, too, which turned everything on the plate orange!

The puddings, though… they were the best. We had lots of different sponges, all served with steaming hot custard. I loved those, but actually my favourites were always the cold puds, in particular the Arctic roll.

I just loved the combo of Swiss roll, raspberry jam and freezing-cold vanilla ice cream that ran through the middle of it.

It came with fruit salad, which I think was probably from a tin. We ate it at home, too, and for some reason my younger brother Terry and I called the syrup the fruit came in “joojar”.

I have no idea why, I just remember always asking for “extra joojar”!

I’ve made Arctic roll for my own kids, with frozen yogurt rather than ice cream.

That combined with the sponge is just as delicious as I remember. Especially with extra joojar!’

FOR THE FRUIT SALAD ● 1 pear, cored, peeled and diced ● 213g peach slices in fruit juice, drained and chopped ● 100g green grapes, halved ● 50g Asda Frozen for Freshness Cherries, halved FOR THE SPONGE ● 4 medium eggs ● 100g caster sugar, plus extra for dusting ● 75g self-raising flour ● 50g Asda Reduced Sugar Raspberry Jam

Creamy Arctic roll SERVES 12 READY IN 2 HRS, PLUS FREEZING PRICE PER SERVING 28p

FOR THE FILLING ● 300ml whipping cream ● 200g fat-free Greek-style yogurt ● 1tsp vanilla extract 56 | ASDAGOODLIVING.CO.UK

1 For the filling, whisk the whipping cream in a bowl until it just holds its shape. Fold through the yogurt and vanilla extract to combine and pour into a deep plastic container. Freeze for 3-4 hrs until almost solid.

2 Remove from the freezer. Stir with a fork, tip onto a sheet of clingfilm and shape into a cylinder 23cm long.

Return to the freezer until solid.

3 Stir together the ingredients for the fruit salad in a bowl. Put in the fridge for 20 mins or until the cherries thaw.

4 For the sponge, preheat the oven to 190C/170C Fan/Gas 5. Line a 23cm x 33cm Swiss roll tin with baking paper.

5 Whisk the eggs and sugar in a bowl until the mixture is light, fluffy and thickened. Add the flour and fold in gently. Pour the mixture into the lined tin and smooth it out evenly with a spatula.

6 Bake the sponge for 10-12 mins or until just firm to the touch.

7 Put a sheet of baking paper slightly bigger than the tin on a work surface and dust with caster sugar. Wearing oven gloves, turn the sponge out onto the paper and peel the lining paper off the bottom. Starting at one of the short sides, carefully roll up the cake with the paper.

Allow to cool completely.

8 Carefully unroll the sponge – leave it on the paper. Stir the jam to loosen and spread it over the sponge.

9 Lay the frozen filling at one end of the sponge. Use the paper to roll the cake around the filling until it is completely enclosed.

10 Freeze the Arctic roll for at least 30 mins or until firm, then serve in slices, with the fruit salad on the side.

‘We need a home that can grow with us’ One family enlists the help of interior stylist Pippa Jameson to give their family home an update with George Home

meet the family Charlie Bason, 38, a patent lawyer, and her husband Tom, 35, an accountant, live in Teddington, Middlesex, with their three children – Jack, four, Ted, two and Edie, three months the property Charlie and Tom moved into their Victorian three-bedroom railway cottage in 2013 but, busy with a growing family, have found organising the house a real challenge. Their makeover dream was to find ways to utilise all the rooms as effectively as possible for the whole family and their entourage of stuff.

hen Charlie and Tom Bason moved into their new home, they asked some friends to help give the place a quick revamp with a few cans of paint.

‘Four years and three kids later, we haven’t really changed it much,’ admits Charlie. ‘We had all these plans to do up the house and make it our own, but children take up a lot more time than you think!’

Like the majority of houses in this area, the Basons’ home is a narrow build and, as well as being short of functional furniture and storage, it was lacking a bit of character.

With the help of interior stylist and designer Pippa Jameson, we used a selection of pieces from the latest George Home collection – and some of her top stylist tips – to give three of their rooms a brilliant new look…

Living room Charlie says: ‘Our front room has great potential but we’ve just got into the habit of not using it as a living space, which feels like a waste. It’s really just like a large porch, a dumping ground where we take off our coats and shoes when we come in, and store the boys’ scooters. They love to play in there, so it’s always full of Lego and toy trains. It would be great to turn it into a living room for me and Tom – somewhere for us to unwind after the kids have gone to bed.’

Charlie says: ‘As I work from home, I need a space that’s creative and flexible. I love my office but it’s always been a bit of a storage room as well, and I have to navigate around old gym equipment to get to my desk.

Google can be both helpful and horrendous, so use it with caution.

My search history is full of ridiculous questions I asked in the middle of the night like: ‘My baby doesn’t seem to be very happy?’ and ‘What does a newborn poo look like?’ and ‘I’m worried my pelvic floor is weak!’

What’s been your biggest parenting fail?

One of the worst was forgetting to pack anything in my changing bag on a trip to see

the paediatrician, so the hospital had to find me a nappy, wipes and a change of babygro for Henry. I felt like someone was going to come and take my child away from me.

Let’s talk tantrums.

What’s the strangest thing one of your kids has ‘lost it’ over?

Jude loves to collect receipts at the self-service checkouts in supermarkets, so if other shoppers take their receipts away with them, he’ll have a full-on paddy on the floor.

How has social media changed parenting?

Social media is an amazing tool for bringing parents together. My mum had nothing, just a cursory ‘hello’ to the lady next door, when you were both lonely and suffering with postnatal depression.

Now, if I’m faced with a code red nappy situation at the Tate Modern and have to remove my socks to put them on the baby’s legs, I can share it on WhatsApp or Instagram and hundreds of people will respond

with similar experiences.

Recently, it’s been less about perfection and more about sharing the mess and the stress.

Most important thing you’ve learned?

My relationship almost crumbled when I started breastfeeding because I never had all the things I needed, so Matt would have to rally round and fetch them for me. Make sure you always have a station with all your stuff on it.

Your partner will thank you for it.

Advice for other parents?

Don’t be surprised by the amount of stuff that gathers in the bottom of your nappy bag. The other day, I found a can of WD40 in there, and a Halloween chocolate.

I hadn’t eaten in more than five hours – it was great!

How would you describe parenting in two words?

Happy madness. You will end up doing all of those stereotypical ‘mum’ things, such as dancing like a loon to the radio as your kids look on helplessly, or spitting on a tissue to wipe a mucky face.

The strangest thing that has triggered a tantrum?

Fox would refuse, through the medium of screaming, to sit in a highchair – he’d only sit in a normal chair. At 20 months, he couldn’t see over his bowl, and would pour the meal over himself.

Motherhood is a long game – it’s a marathon not a sprint. And, whatever people tell you, kids do not sleep through the night at six months.

What would you say to anyone who feels like they’re not succeeding?

We judge the worst of ourselves by the best of everyone else. We’re all trying to make it look like we’re holding it together when, actually, no one is.

When you realise that, it’s liberating. Everyone’s had a row with their kid about putting their shoes on, or spent 20 minutes trying to scrape week-old Weetabix off the table.

What did you do differently after the first time?

My big thing with Greta was putting my own self-care much higher on the list. After her birth, I stayed in bed for a week, then on the sofa for a week. People often forget that you’re still recovering.

They can come to visit, but there should be strict time frames. And if they come, they can put the kettle on themselves!

‘If there’s no time for ironing, I’ve used my hair straighteners to smarten the boys’ shirt collars just before they put them on. Under a school jumper, it gives the impression that they’re very well turned out and their mum must have everything together.’

The Unmumsy Mum ‘Never underestimate the power of a clean sock – it can be a lifesaver if you’ve run out of wet wipes.’

Mother Pukka ‘Lay out breakfast things before bed and also get your kids into their PJs as soon as they’re home from school.’

Selfish Mother ‘Keep an extra toothbrush for each child by a downstairs sink.

That way you don’t have to chivvy them back upstairs before school.’

What’s the one thing you wish you’d known about motherhood?

That it’s important to be a little bit selfish. Paying attention to number one means I have the energy to focus on everyone else.

My ‘selfish’ moments aren’t groundbreaking: a yoga DVD during my daughter’s nap, or taking the kids for a window-shopping trip instead of soft-play!

‘jamie oliver made me want to be a chef’ What kind of cook are you?

Really good. Growing up, I loved Jamie Oliver. His shows made me want to be a chef. I still love cooking now. My speciality is traditional pub-food dishes, like lasagne. I don’t make my own tomato sauce, though; I just use one of them pastes.

First dish you ever cooked?

Sausage and mash, when I was 13.

I still make it now with Cumberland sausages and onion gravy. I get the onions nice and soft in the pan first.

Food that reminds you of childhood?

I was always in the shop buying Space Raider crisps and Skips. I used to eat a lot of cockles as well because my dad worked at Billingsgate Fish Market. I worked there, too, but they sacked me after three months!

Describe a typical day’s menu...

I have three eggs every morning; sometimes poached, sometimes scrambled. For lunch, I’ll cook chicken, broccoli and rice. Dinner is usually sushi or fish; always something healthy.

I’m all or nothing. I was really fit last

but my mum [Joey’s mum Tina died when he was 10] was really slim, so I must take after her.

You took part in I’m a Celebrity in 2013. What was the food like?

I ate a scorpion, but the turkey’s testicles were disgusting. Afterwards, the doctor told us not to eat much as our bodies couldn’t digest food, but I ordered so much room service I couldn’t walk for a couple of days.

Best restaurant you’ve eaten in?

Sheesh in Chigwell. It’s got a good vibe. I always get the monkfish kebab with a light garlic sauce.

Favourite tipple?

Vodka soda. I don’t actually drink really fizzy drinks.

Which celebrity has cooked you a meal to remember?

I was in Gino D’Acampo’s restaurant and he cooked me some meatballs with mushrooms inside. It was the weirdest thing, but tasted amazing.

He cooked me some sick pizza, too, topped with stuff I’d never seen before. He also gave me a little VIP member’s card and said to come back whenever I want. I ain’t used it yet.
