EDITOR’S LETTER TE TER ER E R

February Welcome to

There’s an unwritten rule in our house that as cooking is my obsession, and my fiancé’s is DIY, we’ll both respectfully ignore any subsequent cost or mess that results from our hobbies. It’s about give and take – even if I don’t like the mess he makes initially, I do like the results. And I really can’t complain too much – the number of times he’s washed up after me, or nipped out on a fool’s errand to find that ‘missing’ ingredient that will complete my meal. I know my passion for food sometimes comes across as a bit of an obsession (my ‘salmon tartare period’ nearly broke us!) and that deep down he’s quite happy with simple dishes. So this Valentine’s,

ust like fashion trends, fragrances that are in vogue change each season. And this year, we’ll see some classic perfumes make a comeback. For example, one of the big trends will be nostalgic, floral fragrances inspired by vintage fashion. This means those rose scents that your grandma used to wear, along with gardenia and jasmine, are back in fashion and have never smelt so good. For a gorgeous floral, try Cacharel Anais Anais, 30ml, £15*. Intense fragrances that are rich with spices and cardamom, are also making an appearance. Reach for an oriental or a classic chypre (musky scents with dry, spicy woods), such as

Rihanna Reb’l Fleur Eau de Parfum, 100ml, £28, and you’ll smell as fashionable as you look. Cool, clean fragrances are another big influence this year and L’Eau D’Issey Eau de Toilette, 50ml, £35, captures this perfectly. If you love deliciously sweet perfumes you’ll be pleased to hear that comforting, warm notes of honey, vanilla and foody aromas, like those in Beyoncé’s Heat Eau de Parfum, 30ml, £12, are on trend to keep us cosy. With so many fragrances to choose from, it was hard to pick favourites. But after lots of spritzing and snifng, here’s my pick of five classic fragrances that are bang on trend for 2014.

WEAR IT WELL ● Spray perfume on your ‘pulse points’, eg wrists, inside the elbow, collarbone and under the earlobes. These points release heat and help spread the scent. ● Don’t rub your wrists together after applying scent as the friction will alter the notes of the fragrance. ● Avoid putting fragrance on your cleavage and neck because the alcohol in it can dry delicate skin. ● Fragrance will last longer if you put it on after a bath or shower because it is better absorbed by damp skin.

Pasta There are so many shapes of pasta, it can be hard to work out which to use. LONG, THIN PASTAS like spaghetti or linguine are great for smooth sauces like pesto, simple tomato, or an oil, garlic and chilli one. Each strand will then be evenly coated. WIDE, FLAT PASTAS, such as tagliatelle or parpadelle, are ideal for mopping up creamy sauces like carbonara. The wider the pasta, the heavier the sauce can be. TUBES LIKE PENNE or rigatoni work well with thick sauces such as ragu. The grooves on the ridged versions hold even more sauce – great for pasta bakes. SHAPED PASTAS like farfalle (bows) or conchiglie (ears) are the best choice for chunky vegetable or meat sauces as they have lots of crevices to trap the sauce.

I don’t drink alcohol. Will cooking with nonalcoholic wine make a big diference to the flavour of a dish? Glyn Blackburn In sauces and casseroles, it won’t make any diference at all as the alcohol will evaporate during cooking. The end result will depend on the quality of the wine though. If you don’t want to use wine at all, grape juice and a dash of wine vinegar will give a similar taste.

Make the most of any pastry leftovers to create even more yummy dishes. Filo is a great alternative to traditional puf pastry for pies. Simply brush it with oil, tear the sheets into strips, scrunch into rough bundles and put on top of your pie. Brush with melted butter and bake in the oven. Make a lemon and dill sauce, brush it on salmon fillets and wrap in filo pastry. Bake until golden. Sautée sliced mushrooms in garlic and butter. Put the mixture in the middle of two filo squares and wrap up into bundles. Bake in the oven.

Cooked just how you like it Do you prefer your steak extra rare or really well done? The cooking time will depend on the thickness of the steak. Ribeye steaks, £4 (227g; £1.76/100g), are really tender and marbled with fat, which adds to the flavour and succulence.

Best all rounder

Best for tenderness

Best for flavour

Si l i steaks, Sirloin k £4 (227g; £1.76/100g), are tender with a good flavour. They’re marbled with fat, but leaner than ribeye.

Fillet steaks, £29 per kilo**, are by far the most tender cut. The flavour is more subtle than ribeye, rump and sirloin.

R Rump steaks, t k £4 (255g; £1.57/100g), are slightly less tender, but have an excellent flavour. Good for grilling and frying.

TOP TIP Take the steaks out of the fridge and unwrap them 30 minutes before needed, as they’ll cook more evenly. Dry with kitchen paper before cooking.

Oiling the steak, not the pan, reduces the amount of oil you use and cuts down the smokiness while you’re frying.

HEALTH

10 ways to a healthy heart

It’s your body’s most hard-working muscle, beating away 24/7 to keep you going. February is National Heart Month, so there’s never been a better time to make a change to help keep it ticking over GO NORSE

WORDS: RADHIKA HOLMSTRÖM. ILLUSTRATIONS: ZARA PICKEN. SOURCE: *NEWSROOM.HEART.ORG/NEWS/1091. **JOURNAL OF INTERNAL MEDICINE, MAY 2013

Researchers from Sweden’s Lund University have found a Nordic diet may be as good for your heart as a Mediterranean one**. Scandinavian staples of oily fish, berries, veg and pulses are well-known heart helpers.

If it's chocolate, choose dark Shed any spare tyres Your weight really does make a big diference to your heart health – as does the amount of exercise you do – the more pounds you pile on, the more it's under pressure. However, if the scales are peaking too high for comfort (and at this time of year, they often are!), don't panic and crash diet. It’s much better for you to lose a pound or two every week – the weight may stay on a little longer, but you've got a much better chance of it staying o! permanently.

Research shows the odd square can do your heart good – as long as it’s dark choc and it is really only a small amount*. It’s still packed with fat and sugar, so don’t overdo it – stick to a square or two a couple of times a week. All the same, it’s nice to know…

Stub it out Smokers have nearly double the risk of a heart attack of people who've never smoked, according to the German Cancer Research Center. There are lots of products to help you quit, from patches to e-cigarettes. Or try helplines such as smokefree.nhs.uk, so you don't have to go it alone. FEBRUARY 2014 | ASDA.COM/MAGAZINE | 69

HEALTH

PLAY THAT FUNKY MUSIC

Catch up with friends Having a great social life is good for your health, and your heart**. It's the perfect excuse to get in touch with all those people you haven't seen for a while.

Grab the grater Cheese is packed with the saturated fat that raises your cholesterol, so try grating it rather than using slices – you'll make less go further. If reduced-fat varieties don't do it for you, go for strong cheese such as Stilton (just a small amount) to give you the taste you're craving.

Swap the bacon butty …for a salmon sandwich. Red meat is high in the cholesterol that’s a danger to your heart, and processed meats such as bacon and sausages are particularly bad for you, according to a study in the journal BMC Medicine††. A heart-friendly salmon sarnie, on the other hand (ideally, on brown bread), is rich in omega-3 ‘good fats’.

Turn on the tap Too many sugary drinks are a sure-fire way to raise your risk of heart disease, as is alcohol‡. So cut down, and stick to plain water instead – free and available at a tap near you!

SPICE IT UP Salt raises your blood pressure, and that drives up your risk of a heart attack. Instead, turn to the spice rack. Use a whole range, as well as the juice and zest of lemons, to add heat and flavour to meals. Your heart will thank you for it...

CALL FOR HELP… There are some signs you shouldn’t ignore. If you have tightness or pain in your chest (especially if it’s spreading to other parts of your body), or you feel sick or dizzy, the British Heart Foundation advises you to call 999. It’s always better to be safe than sorry. For more info, visit bhf.org.uk. 70 | ASDA.COM/MAGAZINE | FEBRUARY 2014

A study from the University of Maryland† has shown that listening to music is great for our hearts, partly because it releases feel-good brain chemicals (endorphins) and helps us handle stress. So much better than cracking open the biscuits!

Why it’s romantic: Known as the City of a Hundred Spires, Prague’s rich architectural mix of Art Nouveau, Gothic and Baroque, make this a fairy-tale city of Bohemian delights. Romantic places to stay: Step back to the glamour of the 1920s at the Art Deco-style Majestic Plaza Hotel (two nights, £89 per person, per night). Great restaurants: Book the private salon at Pálfy Palác (two-course lunch, £8) and dine in splendour under a golden chandelier. Or savour the seafood (from £11) on the riverside terrace at celebrity hot spot Kampa Park. Sights to see: Soak up the magical atmosphere as you watch the astronomical clock in the Old Town Square (above) spring into action; take a peek inside the dome of St Nicholas Cathedral; explore the ancient Prague castle.

What woman doesn’t love the style of Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast At Tifany’s? The classic eye flick still ruled this season’s catwalks – some designers went for a subtle line, others a thicker block. To recreate the look, use George Glamour’eyes Liquid Liner, £2.75, which has great staying power. Start by dotting colour on the roots of lashes, then sweep the brush along to create definition. For a bolder look, gradually build up the line. Finish of with Maybelline Great Lash Thickening Mascara, £4.98.

ANNE HATHAWAY

EYES Anne & Audrey’s look…

If you like a more subtle look, use a pretty stain. Try Collection Lasting Lip Stain in Pout, £3.98

LIPS Marilyn & Scarlett’s look... When we think of movie icons, it’s often the blonde bombshells who spring to mind. And those gorgeous blondes usually have a full-on red pout to add to their super-sexy look. For kissable, glossy lips you’ll need a moisturising lippy that won’t give that dry, cracked look when it starts to wear of – George Moisturising Lipstick in Casino, £3.50, is perfect for that. Always use a primer on your pout for staying power and a liner, such as Rimmel 1000 Kisses, £2.98, to stop the colour bleeding.

It’s all about luminous skin with these two stars. Use Nivea BB Cream 5 in 1 Moisturiser, £6, for light, nourishing coverage that creates a good base. Dab on a little George Blemish Concealer, £3, where needed, then add a pretty flush of colour to cheeks with George Cheeky Tint in Pink Blossom, £3.50, which doubles up for cheeks and lips. Don’t overload your skin with powder as it’s ageing – it’ll knock out the natural radiance of your skin. Keep it fresh with a light dusting of Rimmel Stay Matte Pressed Powder, £3.98.

Grace Kelly is known for those fabulous defined eyebrows, still the firm domain of celebs today. Keep yours groomed, but not too thin, to get them right. Pluck strays using the QVS Tweezer Set, £6.98, and create definition with a George Precision Brow Pencil in Blondes, £2.75, (it has a great brush on the end). To accentuate the shape, use The Colour Eyeshadow Pencil in Vintage Blush, £3.18, along your brow bone. But when it comes to great statement brows, having them professionally shaped can be the way forward – give it a go!

5 ways to Get ready for

spring

With spring just around the corner, get out into the garden and spruce it up for the (hopefully!) warmer months ahead

1

rake up leaves

Rake the lawn and borders and put leaves on a compost heap or in the recycling bin. To make mulch for the following year, pile leaves into black bin bags, sprinkle with water and shake. Puncture the bottom and sides of bags, tie and store in a shady spot.

2

Revive the lawn

Lawns need oxygen to grow. Make holes with a garden fork, pushing it in 7cm deep, every 15cm. When the lawn starts to grow, apply a liquid feed, only mow on dry days and don’t cut the grass too short.

4

Start planting

5

You can plant roses, climbers, hedges and shrubs, such as magnolia and camellia, if the ground isn’t frozen or too wet. Prune winter-fowering shrubs to prolong the blooms, and clip evergreens and climbers, such as jasmine and wisteria, to encourage new growth.

add pots of colour

Pot up early spring fowers such as primulas and dafodils to create bright splashes while the rest of the garden grows. Visit ASDA.com/direct for a selection of pots and planters, plus trellis, decking, garden equipment and fencing. 90 | asda.com/magazine | february 2014

Words: Jo maddox. illustrations: HannaH Warren

3

Give woodwork a facelift There’s bound to be storm damage to deal with after another tough winter. Check fences, sheds, greenhouses and garden furniture, then work out what needs to be repaired, sanded and painted.
