We United Our Trainings into ASD Packaging Academy and Improved Our Competitions and Publications Dear Members and Colleagues,
W
e united our Lifelong Trainings and founded the ASD Packaging Academy in 2014. With this Academy, we are hoping to serve the Turkish Packaging Industry with our 22 years of knowledge and experience and with the professionals who are actively working in the industry. The trainings, which can be attended by all members of the associations operating in our industry, are about Flexible Packaging Materials, Printing Techniques, Good Manufacturing and Hygiene Principles, and Packaging and Food Safety among many others. We expect the support with regards to the special trainings with technical content which we are unable to access through other channels. In addition to the professional trainings which are always a top priority for us, we started to offer a lifelong ASD & TÜYAP Educational Scholarship to our students who won the first three places in the Packaging Design National Student Competition in order to encourage design students to work in the packaging design area and to contribute to our sector. We are hoping to contribute to the success of our country which won the top three awards in the international competitions in the last two years and to help it make this success permanent. We helped our young brothers and sisters who won two of the top three places at the WorldStar Student 2013 which they participated after winning the first three awards at the Packaging Design National Student Competition organized with

the cooperation of our Association and Reed TÜYAP and which was sponsored by Eurasia Packaging Istanbul Fair to attend to the awards ceremony held at the Polythecnic Institute & State University in Virginia, USA in March. We would like to congratulate our students who shone out in a large group of participants and achieved a great success, and the teachers who trained them. Our students continue to prove the high level of quality our country has reached in Packaging Design. The application process for the 2014 Student Competition has started. Applications for the competition which will be held for the 10th time this year will be accepted until July. The 20th Eurasia Packaging İstanbul Fair which is organized through ASD and Reed TÜYAP Fuarcılık A.Ş. and with the valuable support from sector associations such as AMD, ESD, KASAD, MASD, OMÜD and SEPA, and which we believe that contributes significantly to the improvement of our Packaging Industry in domestic and international markets will be held between 18 and 21 September 2014. The fair, which is an unmistakable demonstration of the unity and solidarity in our sector, and our industry will continue to grow in 2014 with the support. We will boost our international success and continue to be one of the developing industries in the greater area of Eurasia with a high export potential and sustainable development capacity. The export capacity of our Packaging Industry is developing with every passing year. Our export in 2013 increased by 9% in quantity, and 17% in
value, reaching 1.4 million tons and USD 3.63 billion. When we analyze the total amount with respect to the type of packaging, we see that 70% of it consisted of plastic packaging which was followed by 19% paper/cardboard packaging. Germany, Iraq and UK were the countries we exported packaging most. Our packaging import, on the other hand, increased by 22% in quantity and 27% in value in comparison to the previous year. We imported 1.6 million tons of packaging which was USD 3.7 Billion in value. Most of this import consisted of byproducts. 47% of the import was plastic packaging whereas 44% was paper/cardboard packaging. Germany, China and USA were the first three countries we imported packaging from. We estimate that the export will maintain its growth trend in 2014 too. The export unit price of our Packaging Industry which we calculated to be 2.67 USD/kg and our value added export increases every year. We believe that projects aimed at increasing the effectiveness of our Packaging Industry in both domestic and foreign markets with value added products is very important. In this context, our Association which makes every effort for the development of our industry considers the Crescent &Stars for Packaging Competition to be of top priority. We will organize this Competition for the 5th time in 2014. The interest in this competition, which received 203 applications last year, is increasing every year. We would like to remind that we are expecting the participation and support to the which continues to accept applications until the end of April. All products that win awards at the Crescent &Stars for Packaging Competition (including Competency Award) will be able to participate in the WordStar competition organized by the World Packaging Organization (WPO) and to AsiaStar which is organized by Asia Packaging Federation (APF). In 2013, we attended to the meetings of APF which we are a member of its Executive
Board, and to AsiaStar Jury Meeting, Exhibition and Awards Ceremony. We performed very fruitful activities with delegates from Bangladesh, China, Indonesia, India, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam. We believe that this cooperation in Asia will benefit our industry considerably. Please contact our Association for more information about these meetings. We published the “Hygiene Principles and Good Practices Guide for Companies That Produce Materials and Articles Intended to Come into Contact with Food”, which was prepared by the experts in our Association with the guidance from Republic of Turkey Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock. This guide was prepared in order to help all companies that produce materials and articles which are intended to come into contact with food, mainly the packaging manufacturers. Raising the awareness of our manufacturers in this respect, and making our industrial organizations become more competent both in compliance with the legislation and meeting the needs of the consumer are of vital importance for us. The Hygiene Guide aims to offer guidance to companies in our industry and all suppliers that are included in the process by ensuring that Food Safety and Hygiene principles are taken into consideration during all stages (from taking delivery of the raw material and Packaging production, storage, and transportation) and that the process progresses within the scope of Good Manufacturing Practices. You can find this guide as a pdf file or an e-magazine on our website. We hope that you will find this guide very useful, which was prepared by taking into consideration the views of many representatives and all relevant guides and standards, and thank those who contributed to its preparation very much.” I wish the best for everyone. Kind Regards,

T
he packaging to be used in the new academic year for the school milk project applied by the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Stockbreeding has been specified. The school milk box to be distributed within the framework of 2012-2013 “School Milk Program” will have “We are the Future, the future is ours” and “Let’s drink milk for healthy growth and development” slogans on one face. On the other face, there are logos of EXPO 2016 Antalya and EXPO 2020, for which Izmir is a candidate. There is energy and nutrients information and logos of the Ministry

Also there are emblems of 174 Alo Gıda Hotline of the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Stockbreeding and of ALO184 hotline of the Ministry of Health
Communication Centre (SABIM). On the other side there are the following informative warning notes about milk consumption: l Teachers must be informed about the students with milk allergy. l Milk must be consumed within 30 minutes after the box is opened. l Do not
drink the milk if the box is swollen or damaged. l Keep the boxes in a dry and cool place. l Expiry date and lot no are written on the packaging and the milk must be consumed before that date. School milk project will continue during the second semester of the academic year 2012-2013. “Turkey must Prefer Whole Wheat Bread in Packed Form” The recent hottest topic of our local agenda is the wasted bread. Apart from the efforts to prevent bread from being wasted, the new flour circular by the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Stockbreeding was presented to the National Food Codex Commission on 20 January for approval. This will ensure that bread made of wholemeal flour and whole wheat 034

flour will be consumed by households. In the light of all these developments, Burcu Özcan, Marketing Manager of Doygun Ekmek said that the most important reason why 6 million loaves per day and 2 billion loaves per year are dumped in Turkey as declared in TMO’s (Turkish Grain Board) report is that the use of packed bread is less than the required level.
ASD News
The Project on Maximizing Turkish Packaging Competitiveness ASD Turkish Packaging Manufacturers Association performs an export project with the support of Turkish Ministry of Economy.
Export Development Project Opening Meeting was held at the headquarters on 4 December 2012. The leading packaging companies of the industry showed great interest in the meeting. The Project, in the approximately 17 companies take part, will be completed in 3 years. One of the main goals of the Project is to increase the export share of the participating companies and introduce them to new foreign markets. An analysis of the performance of the packaging industry for the last 10 years reveals that despite the global financial crises in 2008 and 2009, the industry showed a growth far greater than that of Turkish economy. Turkish Packaging Industry grew by approximately 14 percent in 2011. Although we do not have conclusive data on the performance of the industry in 2012, the data on foreign trade indicates that it grew by 20 percent. This means that the size of our industry has reached 14-15 billion TL.The Packaging Industry export, on the other hand, has doubled in size in the last six years despite the recession in foreign markets due to global crises. It is expected that the industry will grow at a far greater rate than the Turkish economy in 2012. As a result, it is very important to find new market or to increase shares in the existing markets.
Directing the Packaging Industry towards New Markets
We predict that the Turkish economy will pursue a cautious finance and growth strategy in 2013, as it did the previous year. It seems that the driving force behind the growth will be the increase in export, just as it was in 2012. It is estimated that the rate of growth will be smaller in 2012 and 2013 than the previous year. The demand in the foreign markets has been shrinking due to recession, particularly in Europe which is one of our major export markets. These are the fundamental problems which our industry must cope with. Therefore, export is a subject which our Association attaches great importance. The economic recession which is expected in Europe the 036
PACKAGING WORLD
next year makes diversification of export markets very importance. In order to prevent shrinkage in our classical export markets from affecting the export potential of the packaging industry adversely, our competitive power in the existing markets needs to be boosted and new markets must be found. To this end, we are planning to accelerate our activities for developing international business. In this context, we developed an Export Promotion Project titled “Packaging Industry International Competitiveness Maximization Project” by using the incentives offered by the Ministry of Economy in order to increase the export performance of our industry at the same rate as the previous years. We believe that these incentives are great opportunities for all companies operating in our industry, particularly the SMEs, for institutionalization and expanding overseas. When all support offered by the Ministry is used within the scope of this Project, our industry will obtain a 2-million dollar incentive.
17 Companies Participated in the Project
Our Project has been approved by the Ministry of Economy officially. Since we first filed our application with the Ministry, the number of participants in the Project went from 13 to 17, an increase which proves that companies operating in our industry are well aware of the importance of export. We initiated Needs Analyses with the participant companies, which is the first stage of the Project. With this Project, we are aiming to contribute to the clustering activities in the industry and to increase their competitiveness in the
INTERPACK SPECIAL ISSUE MAY 2014
global markets. We also want to support their institutionalization efforts, reinforce their export infrastructures, expand their presence in the existing markets and allow them to enter new foreign markets. Ministry of Economy Subsidizes Companies at Certain Ratios within the Project We are planning to complete the Project in 3 years and 4 stages. Through this Project, companies will be able to enter new markets and conduct market research, both of which are very important activities today, at very low prices. The participants will also be able to attend foreign expos advantageouslywhich is very important in our industry and for which they normally pay very high fees. During the first 3 stages of the Project, the companies will pay only 25 percent of the expenses they incur during the performance of their activities within the scope of the Project. The remaining 75% will be covered by the resources of our Association, which later will be compensated by the Ministry of Economy. At the final stage, 30 percent of the expenses will be paid by the companies, whereas the 70 percent will be compensated by the Ministry. At the first stage of the Project, the deficiencies of the participant companies with regards to training and export will be determined and the areas which they need training and consultancy will be established. A plan will be developed in this regard and necessary training and consultancy services will be provided to the participant companies. At the next stage, target countries will be determined in order to increase the companies’ export capacities, and international marketing travels will be organized, and purchasing committees from abroad will be invited to our country. At the final stage, the companies which participated in the first 3 stages will receive individual consultancy services, which will be subsidized by the Ministry of Economy (70%). We believe that it is very important to continue providing such incentives and organizing such projects in the future for the development of the institutional capacity of our sector and for increasing its power to compete in global markets.

The European Cluster Excellence Initiative-ECEI, established by the European Commission in 2009 in order to support development based on cluster perfection, designed and developed the cluster comparison mechanism. The European Secretariat for Cluster Analysis-ESCA, which is currently responsible for the execution of said initiative has been making cluster comparison work in the entire Europe with the accredited cluster comparison experts and defining the organisations/institutions which are the best in their fields. “Cluster Comparison Project” was conducted in Turkey by the Aegean Exporters’ Union. 040

The development level of packaging sector and the consumption of packaging per capita are generally considered as an “indicator of life standard and economic activities. EXPORTS OF TURKISH PACKAGING SECTOR (Prepared from TÜİK – Turkish Statistical Institution data) Packaging sector is one of those in Turkey which does value added exports and does not have foreign trade deficit. It is estimated that it will retain its position and maintain the same growing trend. Packaging sector exports have become 3.1 billion dollars according to data for 2012 published by

TÜİK. Another consideration is that large quantities of packaging is indirectly exported in full condition in the form of products for export. Packaging Industry exports increased 7% by volume and 5% by value as compared to the previous year. Turkish Packaging Sector products are exported to 177 countries all over the world and particularly to European Union countries. In 2012 the top countries of export were

IMPORTS OF TURKISH PACKAGING SECTOR (Prepared from TÜİK - Turkish Statistical Institution data) Packaging materials imported by Turkey amounted to about 3.7 billion dollars in 2013 and increased by 22% in terms of volume and decreased by 27% in terms of value as compared to 2012. The most important import items are plastic packaging (47% of imported packaging) and paper/cardboard/corrugated cardboard packaging (44% of imported packaging). However a major part of them consists of raw material or semi-product

imports. Since our country does not produce cellulose for manufacturing paper/cardboard/ corrugated cardboard, almost all of the raw material for the industrial packages made of corrugated cardboard for transportation need to be imported. Packaging materials are mainly imported from Germany, China, USA, Italy, South Korea, France, England, Russian Fed. Belgium and Finland. PER CAPITA CONSUMPTION AND EXPECTATIONS Packaging consumption per capita is an indicator of life standard. Global average is 110 $/person for 2010. A comparison to North America/Canada with 350-400 $ of packaging consumption per capita, West Europe with 250-300 $ and Japan with 550 $ reveals a long way to go. In 2011, packaging consumption in Turkey was calculated to be about 160$/ person (population: 74,7 million) and in 2012 it reached the level of 190 $/person (population: 75,6 million). For 2023 the estimations are that the level of 300 $/ person will be exceeded. Given the technological development

level of packaging industry in Turkey, the reason why Turkey has a lower level of consumption as compared to developed countries is the diversity in manufacturing industry rather than capacity inadequacy or lack of technology in packaging industry. Turkish Packaging Industry has nothing less than the developed countries in terms of equipment and has even newer technology than some of the EU countries. As the new supply of provisions which are placed on market through importation because of foreign trade policies or low foreign currency rates start to be produced in Turkey, “life standard indicator” will start to rise. Because although Turkish Packaging Sector has both structural and technological capacity required to meet the needs of domestic manufacturing industry, imported supplies are received in their original packaging. As new products start to be made in Turkey, the related packaging will also be produced in the country and market volume will develop accordingly. Our packaging sector has the capacity and experience to face this development, which
INTERPACK SPECIAL ISSUE MAY 2014
we believe will take place in its normal course, both in local and international markets. We have some companies that have a leading position in local markets and production facilities in other countries. EMPLOYMENT AND NUMBER OF COMPANIES AND REGIONAL DISTRIBUTION OF COMPANIES It is estimated that in this sector 90.000 - 100.000 people are employed in about 3.000 workplaces with various sizes. This is a technology-dominated rather than labor-intensive sector. Packaging companies are established very close to manufacturing industries. They are most intensely located in İstanbul, followed by İzmir/ Manisa and then by various places in Anatolia. The following table shows the distribution in our country according to a review made in mid 2010. Figures should not be interpreted as a weight of capacity, but only as the number of companies. Therefore, a single company in a region may have the capacity equal to the total of a large number of companies in that region.

WorldStar Student Awards 2012
These Rewards Prove that We can
Make Design at Global Standards “Turkish Students had Excellent Success in World Star Student Competition”
Istanbul TechnIcal UnIversIty IndustrIal Products DesIgn Department IlterIş Ilbasan You designed one of the 3 most successful student projects in the world; you were granted WorldStar Student design award and the first 3 ranks in the competition were filled by Turkish students. Worldstar Student Design Award has a special place in my heart because it is my first international award. As a designer, it is a wonderful feeling to receive an international award. I was invited to the USA to get the award. I went to the Michigan State University with the cooperation of Turkish Packaging Manufacturers Association and World Packaging Organization. I would like to thank Turkish Packaging Manufacturers Association for this. What makes it all nicer is that three Turkish students were placed in the top three ranks. This proves that we can make designs at global standards and helps us feel optimistic about 062

the future of Turkish packaging sector. Who are the local or foreIgn IndustrIal desIgners that you follow? In Turkey I like the works of Oya Akman and Ümit Altun. Among my favourite foreign designers are Ora Ito, Karim Rashid and Jonathan Ive. Anadolu UnIversIty IndustrIal DesIgn Department Güllü Durmuşkaya and Ayşe Bor Can you tell us about the desIgn phase of a new project? For us the design process starts with asking such questions as, “Why am I involved in this project? What are my concerns? What are the corresponding solutions?” The more honest whe are in this phase, the more honest the finished product speaks to the user. After defining the concept and initial details of the product, we simultaneously question things such as manufacturability, material, product-user relation, product-

place relation and trends in the productization process to complete the project. During all these phases, it also helps to stop and try to take an outside look at the project and check how much we have deviated from the predetermined line. Who are the local or foreIgn IndustrIal desIgners that you follow? Actually this may be a very long list. There are many designers whom I find inspiring in different ways, but the first names that come to my mind are; Benjamin Hubert, Ross Lovegrove, Oki Sato, Naoto Fukasawa, Soren Rose, Ece Yalım, Oya Akman, Orhan Irmak… MIddle East TechnIcal UnIversIty IndustrIal Products DesIgn Department Nazlı Gökçe TerzIoğlu Why dId you choose to be educated In IndustrIal Product DesIgn? that there is no limit to learning and who tell about the need to reach the better by forcing the imagination… I preferred Industrial products design department because I like working, producing and getting especially moral satisfaction in return and this is the only place where I can make my dreams come true… To produce, to make new things and to improve the existing ones... What ‘s more, to see them being used... To know that I have made them... This is design. Tangible, concrete, usable and you are the one who made it. And there is no limit. There are endless varieties. To think about the world, the space, the stars that God created so carefully and to get inspired by them in order to make things that will be for people’s benefit... protection... I just wanted to be one of these people who are able to do all these things. Can you tell us about the desIgn phase of a new project? Let’s not call it phase, but birth. Because you are trying to do something that has not been done before. What you need to do is get familiar with and understand the problem. Because every subject, every product that needs design has a problem. Understanding this problem is the first step of the new birth. Then I think again about how I can solve this problem that has arisen or that I have seen. I have my tablet in my hand, I draw something, don’t like it and delete it. I try to understand how the masters in this field approach the problems because I know the life, the system, the method of most
of them. I exercise care for not imitating them while trying to be like them. I am the first owner of the finished product but when it becomes public, it also becomes the property of the entire world and all the people. There are many designers that I follow, for instance Naoto Fukasawa, Tejo Remy, Ross Lovegrove. The projects that were placed in the top three ranks in the competition organized by the World of Packaging Organization in the USA were designed by Güllü Durmuşkaya and Ayşe Bor from Anadolu University Industrial Design Department, Nazlı Gökçe Terzioğlu from Middle East Technical University Industrial Products Design Department and İlteriş İlbasan from İstanbul Technical University Industrial Products Design Department.

and better life”. This is an attitude which parallels the understanding that packaging will increase the quality of life. Consumers who live in developed economies may find it hard to understand the degree in which certain parts of the world such as sub-Sahara Africa are underdeveloped with regards to health, education and life standards. Wealthy economies should provide a better life to poorer economies and hungry people who live there. This is the only way one can talk about a “sustainable world and future”. Strategies which are formed without any prejudices and which aim at providing a better life to entire humanity through correct packaging will serve both the wealthy and developed economies and the poorer and underdeveloped economies for reaching a right objective. Packaging is the most suitable means for providing a sustainable and better life for more people, fighting hunger and protecting our nature/ environment by minimizing the food packages.
