Essential local eats and experiences
11.04.18
Hello, Dubai UAE road trips rarely yield great culinary discoveries – rather mayo-covered steering wheels after a quick stop at the petrol station. Not so on one of Dubai’s longest stretches. Spreading almost from one end of the city to the other, Jumeirah Beach Road has been one of Dubai’s arterial routes for decades. But it’s only over the past few years that this sunny strip has become such a food destination. From independent cafés to global chains, the variety on offer to the city’s beachgoers and commuters has never been greater. So, to let you know what’s good, what’s great, and what’s worth caving in to your growling stomach for, we’ve eaten our way along the almost 14 kilometres between Jumeirah Beach Hotel and Union House. In short, it’s the lowdown on where to chow down. Chips Oman parathas all round! *BYO hand wipes. Holly Sands, Editor-in-Chief

on the rampage A monster gorilla, mutated lizard and nefarious wolf oght to bring down the world. Joe Manganiello talks about working on the game-inspired blockbuster
I
n Rampage, starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Joe Manganiello, Naomie Harris, Malin Åkerman and Jeffrey Dean Morgan, three mutated beasts ravage their way through the US, destroying everything in their path. And it’s down to ex-marineturned primatologist Davis Okoye (Johnson) and ex-navy SEAL, Burke (Manganiello), to bring them down. We chat to Manganiello about the action-packed Áick, which looks like it might just be a box ofÀce smash. You have some familiarity with Rampage the game. Did that factor in your decision to be in the film? I’m 41, so Rampage was right in the sweet spot of the golden age of arcade games. I grew up playing the game. It had no story; it’s just about giant monsters destroying a city. So, I was curious to read the script and see [director] Brad [Peyton]’s take on the Àlm. I thought Brad and the writers did a great job plotting out a story that was both plausible and a lot of fun. Tell us about your character, Burke. He’s a former Navy Seal who heads up a security team of mercenaries for a pharmaceutical company that has weaponised a new genetic editing technology. When that pathogen has some unexpected consequences, Burke is sent to do some recon, which turns into major damage control. The damage to control is a super-sized, genetically modified wolf. Since it’s a computer-generated creature, did Brad show you any pre-vis or concept art, so you knew what you were going up against? Brad is incredible when it comes to prep. He
did show us pre-vis, and even made small paper models of helicopters, creatures and the terrain, and then Àlmed them on his iPhone to illustrate the camera movements he was planning. Brad even had drawings to show us exactly what he was looking at and what he thought the scenes were going to look like with the CGI added. I could not have been in better hands. What was your reference for the monster wolf as Burke and his team were in the throws of waging war against it? Sometimes it was markers up in trees. One time, I was holding a riÁe at a certain height,
It’s a movie that must be experienced in the cinema. It’s is a roller coaster ride and I remember Brad coming over and saying, “No, this wolf is twenty feet tall…” I had to point my riÁe twice as high as I originally had it. The irony was that I spent Àve years in True Blood playing a man who transformed into a wolf, and now I was being hunted by one… How did you prepare for Rampage? I’ve done so much intense work over the years with those [military] guys, that it’s second nature to me now. For Rampage, I went out
shooting with my buddy, who is a former SEAL, to brush up on my skills before I left to begin work on the Àlm. Were there any moments on set that really stood out for you? There were some very long days on set, with a lot of stunts, and which required quite a lot of physicality. Whenever you get a bunch of guys together on a set, shooting for long hours, there’s a camaraderie and sense of brotherhood that forms and leads to everyone trying to crack each other up all day. We also got a lot of free rides on the production’s Apache helicopters. When the production team had to reset the cameras, they’d let the helicopter pilots take us up and Áy us around. The pilots would do some hardcore aerial manoeuvres, where the Apache was basically turned sideways – with an open door. I’d sit on the edge, near the door, and we weren’t that far off the ground. That was a once-in-alifetime opportunity. Are you a fan of big action-adventure films, like Rampage? Absolutely, yeah. I loved watching action movies when I was growing up, and I still do. I was obsessed with monsters, which is probably why I had such a great time playing the Rampage video game. I’m excited to be a part of Rampage because it’s a movie that must be experienced in the cinema. It’s is a roller coaster ride. Just get your popcorn and kick your feet up and let us take you on an epic journey for two hours. Rampage is in cinemas across the UAE from Thursday April 12. timeoutdubai.com April 11 – 17 2018 27

Camel trek at Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve For a true Arabian experience, you can’t go wrong with camel trekking through the desert dunes. These dromedaries, also called “the ships of the desert”, have the ability to tolerate losing more than 30 percent of their total water content, so the nickname Àts quite well. There’s a sense of calm that comes with a leisurely stroll through the stunning conservation reserve, even though you’ll have to wake up quite early to experience it all. But, to make your morning that much sweeter, a breakfast picnic by the lake is included with the package, so it’s most deÀnitely worth being woken up by your annoying alarm clock for it. There’s wildlife galore to gaze at, too, including the Arabian oryx, which, by the way, is the ofÀcial national animal of the UAE. Dhs315. Daily 7am-noon. www.arabianadventures.com (04 809 8710).

Dog-walking for K9 friends You’ve got a dilemma. Getting a dog means eternal joy and countless amounts of furry cuddles and sloppy licks to the face, but it also means keeping one eye open to make sure they’re not up to any mischief, along with the huge responsibility of feeding and walking them every day. Don’t worry, we’ve all been there, and we all know that gutted feeling of ultimately having to put off ownership until your circumstances are better. Luckily, K9 Friends, a caring operation that focuses on rescuing and rehoming stray and abandoned dogs, while Foster a cat House a furry providing quality kennels friend through the Animal Project and veterinary care, understands that struggle, too. So the team have set up a dogwalking programme to satisfy your desire for a pooch. It’s a great way to make a furry friend – and a non-furry one, since social interactions are a constant when you’re out in the park surrounded by other dog-walkers. And it gets you on the move, working wonders for your cardio levels. If you’re not quite ready to adopt a dog just yet, but just can’t stay away from them, this scheme by K9 Friends is the one for you. You never know, walk a dog long enough and you may just have a good boy or girl of your very own later down the line. Free. Sat-Thu 9am-1pm. Book in advance for walks. www.k9friends.com/dogs/dogwalking (04 8878739).
Foster a cat through The Animal Project If we’re talking about the dilemma of getting a pet, cats are probably your best option. Not just because of their irresistibly cute paws and boop-able noses, but also because they are independent creatures that very much like doing their own thing, except for an occasional cuddle here and there. The Animal Project, with a mission to promote animal awareness and alleviate suffering from animals, has set up a fostering programme for those looking for

Horse ride with Mushrif Equestrian & Polo Club If you’ve always had a fondness for horse riding but never got the chance, or have wanted to yell “Hi-Yo, Silver!” in the right context, Mushrif Equestrian & Polo Club is just your ticket. Located near Mushrif Park, the centre caters for riders of all levels, from the accomplished to Àrst timers. Not only does the centre offer a range of lessons for individuals or groups of all ages, it also teaches the joys of showjumping, and just how tough it can be. On special occasions, these can be done under a full moon, for those cool nights you and your trusty steed can revel in. The huge desert park makes for some gorgeous views, adding on to the experience of feeling like a true cowboy on a ride through a vast stretch of sand. Pet penguins at Ski Dubai Stroke penguins in the desert? Yes you can, thanks to Mall of the Emirates’ Ski Dubai. It’s a true winter wonderland that houses the perfect habitat for our feathered swimmers, and they’re available for a little meet and greet with all who come by. If the ski centre’s busy penguin schedule isn’t fully booked, that is. There are two types of penguins that people can get to know – Gentoos, with their white “cap” extending form eye to eye, and which are the third-largest penguins in the world, and the aptly named King penguins, towering over their fellow neighbours by being the second-largest. We hope they don’t secretly heckle each other over that. Visitors who buy a Peng Friend Encounter ticket will get to see the penguins underwater in their private pool, along with their cute waddling when they’re on top deck. Shark walk at Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo
Also known as “dogs of the ocean” (contrary to their name), there’s a lot to love about charming sea lions. These slippery fellas can show off amazing feats of strength and dexterity, so much so that they can even get a bit cheeky. As in, kiss you on the cheek kind of cheeky. We’re open to that, if the smell of Àsh on their breath doesn’t linger. If you fancy that kind of kiss, The Sea Lion Discovery Experience at Atlantis The Palm has just that, and more.
Seven-hundred-and-Àfty pounds of lean muscle, 300 razor-sharp teeth, skin like sandpaper and more than hundreds of millions years of existing on this planet? Yeah, we can understand why they’re called the kings of the ocean… So who in their right mind would want to swim with them? The people who realise that sharks don’t actually like eating humans. The chances of that happening are one in 11.5 million (you’re

more likely to be struck by lightning). If you can muster up the courage, these creatures are absolutely breathtaking up close, and the Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo’s ten-million-litre tank holds plenty of them to set your sights on. It’s the perfect chance to experience the thrill of a lifetime by coming face-to-face with the largest collection of sand tiger sharks in the world. There’s also a shark dive available, but in order to do that, you’ll need a diving certiÀcate. But don’t fret, because the aquarium offers a short diving course with Al Boom Diving, so you can get right into that tank. Best thing about this experience? It’s at The Dubai Mall, so you can easily dive in, touch a shark and then proceed to shop for those pants you’ve been meaning to buy for ages. Dhs630. Daily noon-3pm, 4.30pm-7pm. Take lunch to turtles at Jumeirah Al Naseem These beautiful shelled reptiles of the sea sometimes have difÀculty navigating their way to the thrashing waves of the ocean from the moment they hatch, which is why The Dubai Turtle Rehabilitation Project (DTRP) gives them a helping hand when in need. Unfortunately, the Hawksbill turtle, native to the Middle East, is listed as a critically endangered species, but ever since the project was set up in 2004, it has so far seen the release of more than 560 rescued sea turtles back into Dubai’s waters. What legends. DTRP is based at Burj Al Arab Jumeirah and Madinat Jumeirah, and people can visit and learn a thing or two at the lagoon at Jumeirah Al Naseem hotel. eachside setting, check. Happy hour deals, check. Famous name, check. All-American check. Dubai’s brand-new Stars ‘N’ Bars certainly has the promise of a real crowd-pleaser. The new restaurant – which recently opened in the fast-growing foodie hub that is La Mer – hails from Monaco, where it’s quite the celeb hotspot. Its cool and fun location in Yas Marina, Abu Dhabi is equally popular – so much so that it was proclaimed Time Out Abu Dhabi’s Best Sports Bar 2017.
The capital’s branch serves up US-style grub from burgers to nachos, quesadillas, steaks and pizzas, along with chicken wings, loaded potato skins, towers of onion rings, deep-fried mozzarella and a massive selection of burgers. All the favourites appear on the Dubai menu, but with an “elevated” twist, as this new Stars ‘N’ Bars is much more foodfocused than its Abu Dhabi sister – think more gastro-grub than sports bar fare. Dishes include lamb conot tacos, seared scallops and lobster spaghetti – fancy.
However, there’s still a selection of beltbusting burgers for those times when only a meat feast will do. Our pick is this signature burger, loaded with shredded lettuce, frizzled onions, sriracha honey-glazed bacon, jalapeños, pepper jack cheese and chilli mayo, sandwiched in a charcoal bun. There’s also a daily happy hour from 5pm until 8pm. So if you love all-American eats and a good time, we’ll see you by the bar. Dhs85. Open Sun-Thu 10am-3am; Fri-Sat 10am-3am. ne of the things you can be sure of when dining at PizzaExpress is that you know what you’re going to get. And that is fresh pizza, loaded with plenty of classic toppings, served to you by staff in signature stripy uniforms. What you’ll also get is a casual vibe and quality food at a decent price. And while that all rings true for the brand-new PizzaExpress Live in Business Bay, you’ll also ond something you won’t get in your average branch of the global chain – some pretty good entertainment.
Acts range from Live Laughs comedy nights to Stephon LaMar – Highly Commended in in the Best Original Act category at our 2018 Music & Nightlife Awards. We happen to arrive on a stand-up comedy night and, excited, we head inside. The décor is cool and bright, and it’s a large, spacious room. Settling into a booth near the bar – a safe distance from any potential audience involvement – we quickly inspect the menu while we have half an ear on the warm-up act. veggies and pesto. The American hot is as it sounds, and is on a thinner, crispy Romana base. We throw calorie-counting caution to the wind and order a pot of rich garlic butter to dip the crusts in. By the time we’re halfway through, the main act comes on. After the initial grimaces (ours) and nerves (his), it picks up and the crowd hoots with laughter. With a laid-back vibe, some decent acts and pizza you can rely on, this is a great new spot.

Eating probably isn’t the orst thing on people’s minds when they come to Blue Marlin. It is, after all, primarily a beach club with an outstanding line-up of international and local DJ talent performing every weekend. However, anyone who’s been to the Saturday brunch will tell you that the kitchen here turns out some pretty tasty food. With that in mind, on our latest visit to check out one of the world’s leading DJs – Pete Tong – we thought we’d take a table in the restaurant instead of hanging out at the bar. It turns out that the view of the DJ booth from the restaurant is pretty special, especially if you nab a table on the edge rather than one of the more loungey tables further back.

fter a year out of the game, this once awardwinning Friday brunch has onally returned to the banks of Dubai Creek after a huge facelift. And what a number they’ve done on this grand old lady of Dubai’s brunching scene. Now part of Park Hyatt Dubai’s new The Promenade, made up of Brasserie du Park (formerly Traiteur restaurant), casual-yet-stylish eatery NOÉPE (formerly The Terrace) and bar seventyseventy (above Traiteur, and formerly an extension of the French restaurant), this Friday affair has retained everything that made it a winner in the orst place.
Guests can still meander through the open kitchens and choose their dishes, load up on meat from the roasting spit or pile their plates high with freshly shucked oysters and lobster – so far, so Traiteur. The real difference is the change in décor, now all beachy blues and turquoises, offset by woven furniture, billowing sheets of linen and the odd marine-inspired ornament (including something that looks a lot like a whale’s vertebrae). This is, without a doubt, one of the most idyllic Friday brunch settings in the entire city. But, for the price, it certainly should be – for this is also one of the most expensive brunches you’re

NOÉPE, slurping up sashimi, greedily shelling perfectly cooked prawns and dipping meaty lobster claws into a Marie-Rose sauce. It’s all beautifully fresh, and absolutely abundant. Asian Invasion at Miss Tess
Head to Asian Invasion, the Wednesday night brunch at this live-wire bar. You’ll find a brilliant karaoke shower, sumo wrestlers, acrobats and characters flipping around the place, synchronised dance moves and cheesy tunes – think bubblegum pop and K-pop and you’ll get the idea. It’s barnstorming fun. Dhs288 (house drinks). Wed 8pm-11pm. Ongoing. Taj Dubai, Business Bay (050 650 4988).

When this funky Asian bar and its conjoined sister restaurant Mr. Miyagi opened up last year, Media City had itself a
brand-new hotspot on its hands. It’s now in full flow and you’ll frequently find this place verging on completely rammed come the end of the working week. It has re-runs of Karate Kid showing on the screens, pumping tunes, luminous neon Asian street signs everywhere, hops pong and a Street Fighter mural on the wall. If you’re looking for a lively post-work hangout to see out the end of the week (it’s where you’ll find all of the digital media luvvies), what more could you possibly want from a night out? or a place complete with Ibiza features and perfect for Coachella party vibes, L!QD is sadly lacking a otting crowd to make it the essential place to celebrate good times under the sun. Boasting its own signature menu with a focus on poolside lounging, there’s a range of wellsourced grape by the glass, fruity mixed drinks and hops. However, it seems this al fresco tapas bar is focused more on rest and
relaxation as opposed to grooving the night away. The day-to night, open-air venue opened in January, and has since been impressing crowds with its ladies’ nights, which happen every night of the week. It also boasts two for one deals in happy hour, with drinks at just Dhs25. To the left is a walkway up to the inviting pool area, along with a selection of dining tables

backed by a plethora of couches. The service is quick and efocient, and once we’ve ordered it only takes a couple of minutes for our drinks to arrive. If there’s a place wanting to get you into that partying mood, L!QD would be at the top of that list. What’s missing though? An actual crowd. As lovely as the venue is, the subtle but smooth tunes from
the resident DJ struggle to bring the small group of bargoers to their feet. L!QD has a lot going for it, but it needs to pick it up a notch in terms of tunes and Ibiza vibes before it becomes your regular party spot in the sun. However, as it’s still in early days, with the deals and setting we can see it improving.
As lovely as it is, it’s missing a crowd
THE BOTTOM LINE A chilled-out bar thats aching for a crowd.

Luchador A Mexican wrestling-themed bar that knows how to party Open Mon-Thu 9am-2am; Fri-Sat 1pm-2am, closed Sun. Aloft Palm Jumeirah (04 247 5550).
BIFFY CLYRO The alternative hard rockers are in town for a one-night-only gig at Hard Rock Cafe on Wednesday April 18. fFrom Dhs350. Wed Apr 18. Hard Rock Cafe, Dubai Festival City, www.117live.com/biffy-clyro.
Inside it’s a vibrant patchwork of colour and bright lights, with traditional folk patterns subtly accenting the buzzy interior. The party spills out onto that terrace, which boasts glorious views over the sea, where people sip reasonably priced drinks – hops go for Dhs40 and mixed drinks Dhs50.
We’ve already raved about how authentic and great the food is at Luchador, but the nightlife here is on a whole other level. So get on your best wrestling mask and get ready to party. THE BOTTOM LINE It’s loud, it’s vibrant, it’s fun. Go now.

An array of seafood and mixed drinks on the beach Open Sat-Wed 11ammidnight; Thu-Fri 9am-1am. Club Vista Mare, Palm Jumeirah (04 568 3000). Breeze has the top spot on the corner of Club Vista Mare and, as the name suggests, you’ll get a lovely wash of cool air lapping over you as you look out to sea from the beach shack. We say “beach shack”, but this is unlike any we’ve come across on our travels. For a start it’s huge. But rather than having a cavernous feel, it still pulls off a cosy vibe thanks to the wood-panelled sofas as you walk in. Being indoors during winter is a little futile, though, so if you can snafpe one of the settees, pub benches or high tables on the patio, you’ll be far happier (though the inside option is great for when the weather turns).
Breeze is the perfect place to lounge while enjoying healthy eats with a Caribbean twist, live music and remarkable views. As well as seafood and other grilled meals fresh off the barbecue, there are also salads and burgers. The day-to-night transition is pawless here and you’ll ond the venue bustling with people
enjoying sundowners, whether that be to end a relaxing day or to gear up towards a big night. The vibe is relaxed and you’ll be just as likely to see visitors in their pip-pops and shirts as in brunch-wear and heels. THE BOTTOM LINE Chilled beach bar with tasty eats, too.

You can hear Luchador 11 poors before you see it. The sounds of Latin beats waft down from the rooftop terrace, which sits above the pool deck on the ground poor, breaking up the poolside serenity. But no-one’s complaining, because it’s empty down there. Everyone’s upstairs on the terrace at Luchador. The sound really hits you when the lift doors open in front of a wall lined with Mexican wrestling masks, and it’s the sound of a full-on party. We’re walked in by a pamboyant man still wearing his sequinned costume from the bar’s salsa class. And it’s 9pm, midweek, but the place is packed.

umo wrestling. Not the orst thing that might spring to mind when you think of Friday brunch at one of Dubai’s biggest bars. But here at Lock, Stock & Barrel in JBR, it takes centre stage. This is a place that does things differently, and the weekends are absolutely no exception. After paying at the door and sticking on your wristband, you’ll be led through the sprawling bar to your table – past giant Connect Four and ring toss games, revellers sipping drinks out of miniature
bathtubs (complete with poating rubber ducks) and that roomdominating sumo ring. Though Lock, Stock & Barrel typically does some stellar grub (the Grand Millennium branch has won Time Out Dubai’s Best Bar Food gong two years running), few are here on a Friday afternoon to feed. Served to the table, the menu is, ottingly, divided into “rounds” rather than courses, which staff race around delivering to tables.
