The Association for Science Education Turn your enthusiasm into inspirational teaching

“Some fantastic ideas that I will definitely be incorporating into my teaching.”

“The interest of young people in science is encouraged and developed by inspiring and knowledgeable teachers and technicians.”

Welcome to the Association for Science Education (ASE), the professional home for all involved in science education. This brochure not only provides details of some of our highly respected resources, but also how membership of the UK’s largest subject association can provide benefits that will enhance your skills and career. Science has an impact on all of our lives and we know it is a crucial part of every student’s education. The interest of young people in science is encouraged and developed by inspiring and knowledgeable teachers and technicians. Science is probably the most diverse and constantly changing subject in the curriculum and requires continual development and support. With the growth of school autonomy, it is crucial that teachers and technicians have the opportunity to share ideas to help stimulate teaching and support professional development.

As a charity with a Royal Charter, we are owned by our members, independent of government and therefore a powerful voice for science education. The ASE continues to make a positive and influential difference to the teaching and learning of science throughout the UK and further afield. Though membership offers lots of benefits, there is one overriding reason that drives our professional community – a commitment to ensure that all young people are engaged in appropriate, valuable and interesting science education. The examples of resources contained within this brochure may be a first step to realising that ambition, but I also hope that you will consider joining our professional community.

As science practical and investigative work is an essential part of the science curriculum, we are working closely with Timstar, a leading provider of high-quality science equipment for the effective teaching of Biology, Chemistry and Physics, to bring you a range of curriculum resources. Practical and investigative activities lie at the heart of science but these opportunities are not always identified within the curriculum and schemes of learning. These new resources identify the many opportunities which exist to enhance your current schemes of learning. They engage through purposeful, practical and investigative activities which cover each section of the National Curriculum for pupils aged 11-14, and GCSE and A-level specifications for AQA, Edexcel and OCR for students aged 14-19. They identify equipment, highlight common misconceptions as well as identifying the learning demand of different concepts and key vocabulary in each area of the curriculum. A key part of the resources is that they identify possible purposes of each activity, ensuring that valuable curriculum time is focused on meaningful practical work. This is based on the research paper, ‘Analysing practical activities to assess and improve effectiveness’ by Robin Millar, which also formed the basis of the Getting Practical project of 2010.
