In to the depths of Autumn we now go coat shopping, hurrah! This month we’re feeling an 80s vibe with the blazers in the shops. The biggest trend on the catwalk has been belted duster coats with generous length, which is great for all shapes and sizes. And be brave, add a belt where there wasn’t one, this will look great with an oversized coat! If you like the country feel, plaid is in, otherwise opt for shades of grey, autumnal colours and texture. If you prefer a shorter cut, definitely try the suit/uniform style that’s ebbing it’s way in – a great look with jeans or a dress anytime. Here are our favourites.

Where did the summer go? Don’t worry, autumn fashion promises warm, familiar colours and plenty of cosy textures to ease us in to the cooler temperatures.
There’s a big revival on the autumn catwalks with slouchy knee-high boots, disco themes with sequins, velvet and trims of ruffles, tassels and faux fur. The big colour for autumn is red, so how will you wear it? We have plenty of options to team with such a bright colour. Try a light knit or one of two types of shirts; go Western or Victorian but finish your seasonal look with some glamorous sunglasses.

Trick or Treat?
Halloween - for many of us this means just another convenient excuse for sweets and yet another themed party below:
Black sequin cushion £18 from arthouse.com
Halloween celebrations are becoming more and more popular in the UK and there are no limits for creative costumes, spooky snacks and decorations. Ghosts, pumpkins, spider webs, skulls and bats are the most popular motifs.
For a very special halloween-y feel, think of larger accessories such as mysterious lamps, dark wallpapers and ornate furniture. These add a mystic flair to your home throughout the year and are easily combined with pastel colours, metals and velvet.

Monochrome magic
There’s nothing like a timeless classic and it doesn’t get much more timeless than black and white. While technically monochrome applies to all colours, the classic black and white combo is a trend of its own. The bold look has been a recurring trend in both fashion and interiors since its peak popularity in the sixties, and 2017 is seeing a new revival in a big way - from the catwalk and major fashion magazines to interiors. You just can’t beat a crisp black and white combo. While it may take designers hours to come up with specific colour combinations sometimes it’s the most simple of pairings that packs the most punch. With the use of the right patterns and materials, there’s a lot to play with outside the regular suspects too. Think bold prints and unique details in these two shades, and try incorporating a statement piece like a patterned rug or bold bedhead for a more dramatic effect.

Spotlight on
Penelope Timmis From dairy farmer to renowned contemporary artist, Penelope Timmis has painted her way to a new career.
After studying at the Froebel Institute in London, Penelope ran a farm and raised three children. But, never letting go of her love of art, she returned to painting in 2000. “I have painted all my life,” says Penelope, “I started selling paintings 14 years ago and since then I’ve had a huge number of solo exhibitions. I now display my work in over 30 galleries throughout the UK.” Penelope paints a range of landscapes, seascapes, flowers and animals.
Clockwise from above: Vibrant Lilies £925; Paddle, £795; Golden, £1200
“I am well known for my ‘Fowl’, ‘Flowers’ and ‘Land and Seascape’ paintings,” she adds. Penelope works from her farmhouse studio in the South Shropshire countryside. Her style is instantly recognisable, using colour, movement and life from her surrounding environment as the key elements of her work. She takes great inspiration from the Pembrokeshire coastline where she visits family regularly as well as the plants and animals of her farm.
“Colour and movement are what I look for in all that I see around me and I hope they are reflected in my paintings.” A member of the Society of Women Artists and the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, she has a number of awards behind her and her work is avidly collected. Penelope has a studio gallery in Westbury which is open by appointment to browse the large selection of paintings on display. She also sells paintings and prints from her website: www.penelopetimmis.co.uk

Property transformation in Belle Vue Architect Craig Marston of Ke-Design has helped to transform this tired semi-detached in Shrewsbury’s Belle Vue into a stunning home fit for all the family. “The property had been empty for over 10 years,” said Craig, whose clients were a family of four, that included twin toddlers. “The property required total renovation. Originally the family wanted a modern single storey extension to the rear for an open plan kitchen/dining room, plus a large utility room. I was able to provide this option alongside a twostorey alternative. I pointed out that the three-bedroom house was limited
for the family and they would benefit from an additional master bedroom with ensuite, which would also add value to the property.” After opting for the double height extension to expand their upstairs living space too, the couple wanted to keep as many traditional features as possible, especially the metal-frame French doors. Other elements of the original property are exposed throughout the new design. While the front may look like the rest of the houses in the street, the rear is a hidden gem. The modern extension with its bi-fold doors and roof lantern not only makes an impact outside, the inside is transformed with light and space. Craig adds: “The design works well as the open plan kitchen/diner becomes a sociable space and when the bi-fold doors are open the division between inside and outside is removed.” The project has worked so well, the family’s neighbours have appointed Ke-Design for the same extension.

Second store success From a merchandising unit on the malls of the Telford Shopping Centre to two thriving retails stores in six years Michael and Ann Haines established their business in 2011, not knowing anything about retailing, however they knew how customers should be welcomed and served in a retail environment, they also knew that their products had to be different. Michael’s background was advertising and Ann’s banking, two very important ingredients to run a successful business. Victoria James provide a beautiful selection of gifts for all occasions and unusual high-quality home accessories. The key to their success was to find niche products and change their product lines frequently, they now have over 20 suppliers including top brands such as Gisela Graham, East of India, GPO, Jellycat, Stoneglow Candles and many other well-known brands. They also support and use local suppliers for personalised items. Their larger store in Telford Shopping Centre continues to thrive, growing each year as their loyal customer base grows, in fact many of their customers visited from Shrewsbury which is why they decided to expand and open in Pride Hill Shopping Centre in the county town. “Opening a second store is quite a challenge, it’s a risk and can be quite daunting but very exciting,” said Ann. “We set ambitious targets and we are extremely pleased to be reaching them, we are overwhelmed with the support we have received from Shrewsbury” The couple strongly believe
customer service and niche products are the key to a successful retail business. Both are still very hands on and still responsible for presentation of both stores and serving customers, however they now have eight part-time employees to assist.
to have an enjoyable shopping experience when they visit our store, each price is taken off, each item wrapped carefully in tissue paper and then a plain gift bag is provided and scented ready to give to that special person,” added Michael.
Will they open any more stores? “We are on the case,” said Michael. “We are constantly looking for opportunities to expand our business, however footfall is vital and finding key locations with high footfall is expensive so we will take our time to make sure it is right for us.” Victoria James also support local craft businesses, they buy shopping centre space and create events to make it affordable for small independents to trade in the Telford Shopping Centre reaching high level footfall and they also organise the annual Telford Wedding Exhibition at Telford Shopping Centre and have done for a number of years, again supporting local businesses. “Our customers are extremely important to us, we want them It’s beautiful | 33

Jane Millington, owner and head practitioner at Body and Face Options clinic in Maesbury Marsh, tells us all about one of the amazing new machine that will soon be available at her clinic from mid October This Non-surgical lifting programme has become one of the most sought after treatments and HIFU is the latest nonsurgical technology to excel in this area in just one single session! It targets individually brow lifting, jowl line lifting, nasolabial fold reduction, periorbital wrinkle reduction and overall muscle and skin tightening rejuvenation. The highly focused acoustic energy creates thermal coagulation zones at 3 different selected depths, following which a wound healing response results in the formation of new collagen thus providing a longer term tightening of the skin and muscle revolution in non surgical face lifting treatment. The technology is unique in its ability to penetrate the dermis and the superficial muscular aponeurotic system ( SMAS) layer, which is deeper than all other non invasive facial treatments. SMAS is the same layer which is tightened during conventional face lift surgery. Unlike surgery HIFU is more affordable and requires no time off work.
WHAT AREAS CAN BE IMPROVED WITH HIFU FACE? This treatment is fantastic for overall skin tightening and rejuvenation as well as brow lifting, jowl line lifting, nasolabial fold reduction, and periorbital wrinkle reduction.
HOW MANY TREATMENTS ARE RECOMMENDED? One single treatment is recommended and then a maintenance treatment is advised every 12 months.
WHAT RESULTS CAN I EXPECT FROM THIS TREATMENT? Generally a noticeable improvement in your facial contouring and fine lines and wrinkles will be visible within a 4 week period whilst further improvement in facial skin tightening and wrinkles will be reportedly seen up to 6 weeks post treatment.
CAN I COMBINE HIFU FACE WITH OTHER TREATMENTS? HIFU Face is a standalone treatment.
WHAT WILL I EXPERIENCE DURING TREATMENT? During treatment, the HIFU face hand piece is placed on the skin and held in one area at a time. You will experience a slight vibration and warmth whilst the energy is being penetrated. The handpiece will then be placed on the next area of treatment. This treatment may feel slightly uncomfortable around the jaw line but generally this treatment is pain free. All treatments are subject to an in depth medical consultation. Contact the clinic on 01691 680070 for an appointment www.bodyandfaceoptions.co.uk It’s beautiful |

More than just a gallery Just over a year ago an empty shop in Newport was about to get a new lease of life in the form of a fabulous art gallery Julie and Chris, mother and son duo, decided to open Newport’s very own art gallery. Both having grown up in the market town, they knew that this was just what Newport needed and had the perfect demographic of customer. With a mixture of residents and visitors to the town due to the local University in Edgmond, Julie and Chris knew they could have something for everyone’s taste. Whether it’s contemporary prints and original paintings or affordable framed art, Artworx have it all under one roof. Julie comments: “Who can say they go to work every day doing something that they love so much? It’s more like a hobby than a job.” And this love for all aspects of art really shows. Weather permitting, the front door is always open because Julie and Chris want people to go from peering through the window intrigued to find out what’s inside, to walking in and experiencing for themselves the wonderful range of bespoke art that they have in stock. From the moment you walk in, the friendly relaxed atmosphere is apparent. You are welcome to browse around at your leisure and marvel at the wonderful art, gifts and sculptures that are on show. 44 | It’s beautiful
The team at Artworx are also very passionate and proud to support many local artists that are right on its doorstep, including: Carl Niblett, Carole Baker, Caroline Deighton, Lesley Palmer, Rob Leckey, Sue Payton and Vicki Norman. They also stock a wonderful range of gifts by DCUK and Laura Thomas, who designs a beautiful range of bespoke tea light holders and a stunning range of sculptures from Edge Sculpture who are based on their doorstep in Shifnal.
“If you think we have had some beautiful pieces of art before, wait to see what we have in store for the next 12 months!” Julie added: “The last 12 months have been amazing and I’d like to thank everybody for their support and custom, and if you think we have had some beautiful pieces of art before, wait to see what we have in store for the next 12 months!” Julie and Chris are also very keen to work with all the young, talented artists in local schools and are looking at showcasing some of their work in the gallery alongside the other local and national artists. Whether you are an art lover or just intrigued to see what’s behind the door at Artworx, take the plunge, walk in and see for yourself what a wonderful little art gallery it is.

Agnolotti of smoked potato and onion (from La Dolce Vita, Shrewsbury in The Shropshire Cook Book)
Although made with three ‘poor man’s’ ingredients this deceptively simple dish can be very luxurious when made with smoked potatoes. Over the years La Dolce Vita have had several variations of this recipe on their menu, but this one is a firm family favourite Preparation time: 60 minutes | Cooking time: 5-10 minutes | Serves 4-6
Ingredients
Method
For the pasta:
To make the pasta
200g OO flour 2 whole eggs, large 25ml olive oil
Sift the flour through a sieve into a mound and create a well in the centre. Mixing the eggs with the oil, pour into the well and then slowly mix together until a dough forms. Knead for about ten minutes into a tight ball. Wrap this in cling film and rest in the fridge for 30 minutes.
For the filling: 500g Maris Piper potatoes, peeled and cut into even pieces Hickory wood chips (for stove top smokers) Salt, a pinch 50g butter, unsalted 200g onions, diced 20ml olive oil 1 sprig of thyme
For the onion petals: 1 medium white onion, peeled 20ml olive oil
For the pickled red onion: 300ml water 200g sugar 100g white wine vinegar 1 star anise 1 medium red onion, peeled, cut into quarter and separated into petals
For the chive oil: 1 bunch of chives 400ml olive oil
For the liquorice sauce:
To make the filling Placing the potatoes in a pan three-quarters filled with cold water, add a pinch of salt and then bring to the boil. Cook until the potatoes are tender. Drain before lightly smoking the potatoes over the hickory chips in a stove top smoker according to the manufacturer’s instructions. The longer they’re smoked, the more intense the flavour, so cook according to taste. Then cream the potato, beating in the butter to form a smooth mash before putting to one side. Place the diced onion, oil and thyme into a frying pan and sweat gently until the onion is translucent. Add the mashed potato, blend evenly, and season to taste, before placing the filling in a piping bag. Returning to the dough, roll it out until it’s thin enough to see your fingers through it – either through a pasta machine or using a lightly-floured surface. Then, pipe a tube of filling across the pasta sheet, pull the top edge of the pasta over the filling and press lightly to seal. Starting at one end of the parcel, pinch the filling at 2cm intervals to create little parcels and then cut with a pastry wheel to create individual Agnolotti. Put to one side.
To make the onion petals, pickled red onion, chive oil, and liquorice sauce Blanch the peeled medium white onion in boiling water for 2 minutes then place into iced water to stop the cooking. Drain and cut the onion in half and then place sliced side down in a pan with the oil over a high heat, allowing it to caramelize before separating into individual petals. Place water, sugar, vinegar and star anise in a pan before bringing to the boil and then pouring over the red onion petals. Place the chives and oil into a blender and blend on full power for 5 minutes or until the oil turns green. Strain through a fine sieve.
1 shallot, diced Garlic, 1 clove, minced 25g butter, unsalted 300ml vegetable stock ½ stick liquorice root 200ml double cream
Add the chopped shallot and garlic to a pan, lightly sweat in the remaining butter before adding the stock and bringing to the boil. Then, add the liquorice stick, infuse for ten minutes before straining and returning to the heat. Adding the cream, bring to a rolling boil, and reduce by roughly one-third. Add seasoning to taste.
To serve:
Cook the Agnolotti in salted boiling water for 3 minutes before draining and lightly glazing with the remaining melted butter. Place in a bowl and garnish with the charred and pickled onion petals, before finishing with the sunflower seeds, petals, and a drizzle of chive oil. Serve immediately.
50g sunflower seeds, caramelised Sunflower petals, a handful Chive oil, a drizzle

Wedding winners In the launch edition of It’s Beautiful Shropshire, Anne Tucker, the proprietor of Wedding World very kindly agreed to run a huge competition for the brides-to-be of Shropshire. The prize was a wedding gown of the bride’s choice to the value of £750 and - if this was not an amazing prize in itself - her husband Mike (of Martin David menswear) agreed to give away a groom’s outfit too - making the prize a huge £1000 worth of wedding attire. There were lots of entries, but the lucky winner was Bethan Brown from Newport, who was understandably overcome with surprise when the team at It’s Beautiful Shropshire contacted her to tell her the good news. On 21 June Bethan and her fiancé Martin met with Anne Tucker at Wedding World Shrewsbury and had a wonderful afternoon sipping Champagne and talking dresses. That’s when the dreams started to become a reality for the lucky bride-to-be. With so many beautiful bridal gowns, headdresses, tiaras and veils for Bethan to choose from, it was truly a memorable day and lovely to see such a happy young couple planning their dream wedding. In her own words, Bethan describes how she and Martin first met: “Me and Martin first met at a mutual friend’s house when he was 17 and I was 16 and have been inseparable ever since. We later realised after being together a year that we had actually met each other before - when we were around 12/13 - when various schools around Telford & Wrekin held a dance competition at the Blessed Robert Johnson school, the school Martin attended. I was in the Burton Borough Dance Club and Martin was in the audience watching the competition. Who would have thought that several years later that face in the audience would be my fiancé. “I was quite ill a few years ago and once I had received the all clear from the doctor that I could fly again we decided to book a short trip to Paris in the October. We had a wonderful time sightseeing and dining out but on the 16 October, we went to the top of the Eiffel Tower, something that Martin knew I’d always wanted to do. We went straight to the top, we were up there for around 40 minutes enjoying the view when I said ‘shall we go down now’ as Martin usually has had enough within the first 10 minutes. However, he had said ‘let’s walk over and see the other side’, he got down to tie his shoe lace so I started looking out to the stunning view when I heard him say
Just as he got down on one knee the lift door opened and loads of people were watching us and started clapping and cheering
quite loud: ‘Bethan will you marry me?’ “I turned around quickly and there he was down on one knee holding this beautiful ring in a box. It was so romantic and then we realised we were standing next to the lift and just as he got down on one knee the lift door opened and loads of people were watching us and started clapping and cheering. At this point I was crying and said yes straight away. We then phoned our parents and Martin’s mum told me he had had the ring since June but was waiting for the right moment. He certainly picked his moment it was lovely.” Not to be left out, Martin wanted to have a look at Martin David Menswear to see what choices he could have, but, unlike Bethan as soon as Martin saw the styles and huge range of suits and accessories he knew instantly what he would like. Lucky for him Bethan agreed that his chosen outfit was perfect. The happy couple are now finalising their date and venue before Bethan finalises her fairy tale dress. It’s beautiful

Speech Day honour for former pupil
Education “Seussical the Mu sical”
Historic school’s redevelopment plans are realised Work is well under way on a £3 million redevelopment project at thriving local independent school Tettenhall College. The historic school for two to 18-year-olds, has seen a recent unprecedented rise in pupil numbers is in the latter stages of completing the redevelopment work. Work is currently underway for a striking new sixth form centre, a modernised library, upgraded boarding houses and additional sporting facilities including new squash courts and multi-purpose sports pitches. The contemporary new sixth form centre at the heart of the School will provide the best of both worlds for pupils with a mezzanine ICT and study area and a brand new sixth form common room which is due to be completed by Autumn 2017. The School already boasts excellent sporting facilities including an onsite swimming pool and extensive sporting pitches. These will be further enhanced with the addition of two multi-purpose games areas, for tennis, netball and football. Due to be unveiled in the autumn term, the School’s squash courts have already been completely refurbished thanks to a former pupil’s generous legacy. Graham Aston a keen squash player and former Head Boy, left a £400,000 legacy to the School to develop the sport at the School, the courts. Headmaster David Williams said: “We are very pleased that work is well under way on these exciting redevelopments at Tettenhall College. We are already proud of our educational offering to pupils and the proposed upgrades will strengthen this further. “The work undertaken will blend the contemporary with the historic, which supports our drive to maintain traditional values while moving forward with the times.” As part of the works, renovation of The Towers, one of Wolverhampton’s few Grade II* listed buildings, will also be undertaken. The ‘Towers’ were added in 1866 by eccentric owner and inventor Colonel Thomas Thorneycroft, these days it houses the school’s theatre where the annual school musical rivals any West End production. With a strong reputation for performing arts, this year’s show “Seussical the Musical” was a sell out for all four performances. The audience were packed into the auditorium for the stunning spectacular which involved nearly every member of the senior school. An open morning will take place for the Preparatory school on 17 November. Contact the admissions team on 01902 751119 or visit the website www.tettenhallcollege.co.uk/admissions for further information. 68

Moreton Hall – where girls matter… Sport for each and for every girl; this is the philosophy at Moreton Hall, Oswestry. The approach to sport is all about the individual. A totally bespoke approach; from carefully managed programmes for aspiring elite athletes, to the overall enjoyment of sport for a student’s physical and mental wellbeing. It is a school that has been on the sporting map for a long time, due to their continued success at Lacrosse on a National and International level, with students playing for England and Wales. This passion and dedication to Lacrosse has expanded across the whole sporting field. Sporting success is not just about elite achievements, but the benefit of physical education being part of your everyday life at school - and when you leave. How sport is approached at Moreton, exemplifies how they value each and every girl, whatever their capability and ensure that they are engaging in sport relevant for their ability and potential. In an environment such as Moreton provides, no student is lost - they are encouraged and developed at the rate that works for them. The impressive inaugural Lacrosse Invitational

Tournament held in September highlights this. Over 20 schools, clubs and colleges took part in the ‘non-competitive’ event, which aimed to provide students and coaches with an opportunity to develop their teams and test out new squads for the forthcoming season. Both Moreton Hall’s U15 and U18 squads finished the day unbeaten, enjoying the thrill of playing on their home pitches at such a busy tournament against new rivals. Other exciting new initiatives include the ‘Elite Sports Scholarship Programme’, the ‘Dedicated Athlete Programme’ and the upcoming Sports Tours to Prague, San Francisco and California. Alison McDonald, Director of Sport at Moreton Hall explains: “This is an exciting phase for the development of sport at Moreton Hall as we are building programmes to ensure that the students that have a passion for all things sport, understand what they need to do to achieve their goals. At the same time - we emphasise the value of health, well-being and physical activity for everyone. Our aim is make sure that we focus on the individual in everything - and deliver on our senior school mantra that ‘every girl matters’ and in the case of our junior school - Moreton First, every boy too!”

Bedstone College open day planned
Bedstone College will be holding an open day on 7 October for prospective pupils and their parents A British boarding and day school for boys and girls from four to 18, it is set in the heart of south Shropshire, the school’s rural surrounds and magnificent Victorian calendar house provide an enviable, safe setting for under 250 pupils. For children coming from other schools a number of events are organised throughout the year to help them settle in as quickly as possible. Bedstone offers regular personalised taster sessions where prospective pupils can come along for the day, meet their classmates and teachers and find out more about day to day life at Bedstone College. Bedstone’s Headmaster, David Gajadharsingh says: “Deliberately small, we are not academically selective but focus on bringing out the very best in each child. Our students come from a very wide range of backgrounds and abilities; yet each of them has something within them that is very special. It is this focus on trying to uncover that special talent and using it to build confidence and self-esteem that makes Bedstone much more than a school, but rather a family.”

With strong pastoral care and in small class sizes, students usually exceed their expectations – in the classroom and beyond. Bedstone is also a CReSTeD Specialist Dyslexia Unit, providing learning support for some 10-15% of the student cohort. Outings, an enriched curriculum, theme days, away fixtures and visiting experts all enhance the learning experience for children at Bedstone. The school’s highly-qualified teachers are dedicated to enabling the children to achieve their very best. Investments have been made in a new all-weather pitch which is now in use and future plans include a complete refurbishment of the school’s science labs. Shropshire family launches county education health and fitness retreat With the health and fitness industry primed for continued growth, a Shropshire family is tapping into the market by launching a new educational health and fitness retreat. Nestled in the heart of the Shropshire Hills, just outside Church Stretton, Eden Hills Health Retreat will open this January for its first weeklong residential course. Understood to be the first of its kind in Shropshire, the educational retreat provides a structured programme of health, fitness and nutritional classes for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of work or family life to either get in shape, lose weight or initiate a complete lifestyle change. The new venture is the brainchild of father and son duo Ian and Sean Roberts, from Sambrook, near Newport, who believe consumer appetite for improved health and wellbeing is set to rise further in 2018. Together Ian and Sean have years of experience and excellence in the hospitality, health, fitness and nutrition sectors. Sean, who currently works in partnership with 78 | It’s beautiful
Telford & Wrekin Council providing personal training classes across council-owned gyms will be the centre’s head of fitness. As a Level 5 nutritional therapist, the 31-yearold brings a wealth of experience to the retreat including a specialism in diabetes and obesity. Ian, who over the last 25 years has owned a number of businesses in the hospitality sector, will take on the role of operations manager for the retreat. The pair will be joined at the centre by a team of trained experts and professionals in health, fitness and nutrition, including Sean’s fiance Maxine Boulton, who will run the retreat’s studio classes. Sean’s sister Sammy, is also returning from maternity leave to oversee the administration of Eden Hills Health Retreat. Sean said: “We are extremely excited to be launching the retreat and can’t wait for our first residential course which will start on Friday, January 19th for seven days. “The bespoke programme provides guests with a combination of practical and educational sessions

aimed at improving health, fitness, nutrition and general wellbeing. “What we hope to achieve at the end of each course is to have put in place a number of starting blocks which will enable people to adjust their lifestyle for the better. “The residential retreat is about equipping guests with the right information and tools to enable them to maintain a healthy lifestyle. “We don’t believe in fad diets or quick fix changes and the problem for many people wanting to lose weight, get in shape or just live a bit more healthily is that there is so much conflicting information out there. “During the retreat we guide guests through all this information and put in place a programme to suit individual needs. “Over the seven days, guests will take part in various fitness classes and attend workshops in life coaching and nutrition. “One of our biggest aims with the retreat is to help people change their entire lifestyle so we have also developed workshops which will help guests with on-going planning so that when they return home they can continue with the programme. We also provide post-retreat support with nutrition and fitness. “We are not a boot camp and
believe it’s important to find time for relaxation so our retreats also focus heavily on general wellbeing.”
Country Estate to host the retreats, making use of the luxury selfcatering accommodation.
According to health body ukactive in 2016 consumer thirst for fitness saw the gym sector become the ‘shining star’ of the post-brexit economy with private investment boosting the industry.
Ian said: “We are absolutely thrilled that Nichola and the Madeley Family, the owners of Eaton Manor, are just as excited about the launch of Eden Hills Health Retreat as we are.
Ian, who anticipates further growth in the health and fitness industry in 2018, believes more and more people will be turning their attention to healthier lifestyle changes as opposed to quick fix fitness regimes.
“In the health and fitness world January, February and March are peak months and when we expect the retreat to be at its busiest.
He said: “There is a big emphasis on health and wellbeing and with more people working harder and longer hours it becomes increasingly more difficult to find the right work-life-family balance. The retreat aims to help people redress this balance in their life in the right way.” Ian and Sean have partnered up with family-run Eaton Manor
Nichola added: “We are delighted to be working with Eden Hills Health Retreat and look forward to welcoming retreat guests in the New Year, to experience the magnificent countryside and tranquil surroundings Eaton Manor has to offer.” There are 13 places available on the Eden Hills Health Retreat in January. From spiritual practice to commercial enterprise What excuses do you use for not doing the job of your dreams? “It would never pay the bills”, “I’m too old”, “There isn’t the demand for what I’d like to do locally”, “I couldn’t make enough money”, “I wouldn’t know how to set up a business”? Emma Burton, Director of My Soul Space, Shropshire’s leading Hot Yoga studio (www.mysoulspace. co.uk), is one gutsy lady. She is an example of what happens when you have the courage to throw caution to the wind in order to live your dreams. Emma is an example of a very successful business woman, but also one who exudes extraordinary health and vitality. She looks ten years younger than her age, radiates an inner contentment and has a physique that everyone envies. Emma has always loved yoga and has taught it for 15 years, she was hooked from the very first time she stepped on a yoga mat and remembers wondering how something so simple could make you feel instantly fantastic? Emma hasn’t just felt the emotional and mindful benefits of yoga, she is an example of how yoga can help with physical pain. A riding injury left Emma with years of chronic back pain, doctors and osteopaths had done all they could. Emma began her hot yoga training and slowly but surely the pain disappeared, as long as Emma keeps up her practise regularly – the pain thankfully stays away. But probably the most important reason Emma loves yoga, both teaching and practicing, is that it stops the inner chatter. Prior to taking up yoga Emma had been severely lacking in confidence. Yoga gives Emma calm and serenity and moments of peace which have a 80 | It’s beautiful
lasting effect and feed into the rest of her life. Finding the peace within yourself and being able to return to that quiet space when life gets hectic, is a very powerful tool which Emma relies on. Emma set up the successful hot yoga studio in Shrewsbury just over two years ago and has many loyal customers. As Emma knows how yoga can be life changing, she wanted to share this with people, but she has also shown her entrepreneurial talent and has taken it a step further and launched the world’s first ever Elevating Yoga Course, named ‘My Soul’s Purpose’. The unique course combines yoga and energy editing® and it is the first of its kind in the world. So many people lose their way in the hustle and bustle of today’s hectic world, this course puts people back on track. Energy Editing is a powerful healing modality that creates rapid change in the energy system and combined with Elevating Yoga practice, it removes blocks from aspects of your life which are holding you back. It enables everyone to live their life to the fullest potential, reach goals and smash targets they never thought were possible, whether in home or work life. By doing this practice five
days a week, Emma has seen great success and her customers have been able to connect quickly to their soul’s purpose. Emma has identified 13 keys to unlock the door to your Soul’s Purpose, which are explored during the course. By dedicating just ten minutes, five times a week, My Soul’s Purpose encourages people to take valuable time for themselves every day, connecting with the wonderful, peaceful place, which we all have inside ourselves. The course is not hard and unobtainable and is suitable for everyone, including beginners to yoga. Shropshire girl Emma is really making her mark in the Energy Editing world, helping clients reach their goals worldwide. Locally in Shropshire, Emma is the only hot yoga studio in the county and continues to deliver wonderful hot yoga classes to local yogis, she is certainly one to watch.

LAST WORD Do you know what your ikigai is? What is the one thing you get out of bed for in the morning? I can’t be quite sure what mine is, but I’ve certainly spent some time trying to find it. According to scientists in the US and Japan having a sole purpose in life will improve our sleep quality, health and life expectancy. They refer to it as ikigai and if I want to live a long and happy life, I’d better find mine. It might sound a little new age for most people’s tastes, but it turns out that science actually backs up the theory. A study by Sone, Toshimasa and Nakaya asked over 43 thousand Japanese adults “Do you have an ikigai in your life?” results showed mortality rates were significantly higher among those that did not have an ikigai. Ikigai, pronounced ick-eee-guy is fast gaining traction as a lifestyle concept like ‘hygge’ and ‘lagom’ before it. It’s Japanese and translates simply as ‘reason for being’. According to the Japanese, everyone has one, although we might not know exactly what it is without a lot of soul searching. But apparently this is a part of the journey. There are four key questions I can ask myself to try and find out, but really, it’s how those four things overlap that is where the ikigai lies. 1. What do I love? What is my passion? 2. What am I good at? 3. What does the world need from me? 4. What can I get paid for? 82
| It’s beautiful
Ikigai has to include all of these things, so pursuing a passion without being able to provide for my family or getting caught up in making money but contributing nothing to others are ways that I might lose my balance. That would be very un-ikigai of me. According to expert Dan Buettner, people with a strong sense of purpose have boosted immune systems, lower stress hormones and are able to cope with life’s difficulties better than those who don’t. On the island of Okinawa in Japan, where some of the longest living humans on the planet reside – ikigai is translated as a ‘reason to get up in the morning’. Retirement is not even a concept here, with residents staying active throughout their old age, where it’s thought that the sense of responsibility and being needed is attributed to a long, happy life. Additionally, when asked what their ikigai is, they all instantly know the answer – and they range from teaching karate, fishing to provide for family and holding their great-great-great-grandchildren. Finding my ikigai will take time I’m told – but the thought process is part of the journey. My ikigai is likely to evolve over time, twisting and turning through relationships, career and family.
Those who find their ikigai tend to find it through work, hobbies or relationships. If you’re one of those people who gets paid for doing something that you love, I suppose you’ve found your ikigai already. Conversely, if you get paid a lot for doing something that you hate, you’re a long way from yours. As a mother, the reason I got up in the morning was my children, then when I returned to work it was the satisfaction of a job well done. There is also lots of joy in the little things in life; bumping into an old friend, a beautiful summer’s day, exercise, nature, eating out, finding a dress you wanted on sale. Perhaps my ikigai hasn’t presented itself yet, or perhaps I’m still working towards it. Or is it the sum of all these things that gets me out of bed in the morning? While ikigai might be a foreign notion, it’s something we all know that we need and if it makes us ask ourselves some big questions, what’s the harm in indulging it? At least until the next lifestyle concept comes along.
