When war gets personal

Borderland Rotary Club had a very moving talk which put the Ukraine war in sharp focus.

When you’re living in the UK, with your family far away fighting on the front line in Ukraine against the enormity of the Russian empire, war becomes personal and life isn’t easy, but this is the reality for Mila and many others.

“The journey from Ukraine to Shropshire is a few thousand miles but a world away from what is going on back home, where ordinary friends and neighbours have become soldiers and are bravely defending our homeland,” said Mila. “I’m in touch with people doing all sorts of things on or near the front line, on a daily basis and, although it is not on the front pages of the newspapers anymore, I can assure you, it still rages, day after day, month after month”.

Mila has been tirelessly traveling around the area doing events and talks to highlight the situation and trying to collect clothes, medical and general equipment – and of course, money -to send back home. She is also working full-time in the health sector and bringing up her family – it’s remarkable.

“My brother is serving on the front line as many friends and associates are, supplying medical, catering and many other services under very difficult conditions,” said Mila.

Borderland Rotary have made a financial donation to the cause and are investigating other practical ways to help.

Cantiones Choir bids farewell to Musical Director

At the end of this year Martin Bussey will leave Cantiones Choir after 5 years as Musical Director.

Martin is a distinguished musician, teacher and composer and Cantiones has been lucky to have had him at the helm since 2020. Of course, very early in his tenure we all had to deal with lockdown and the implications for a social group such as a choir. Martin threw himself into solving the various difficulties firstly with weekly zoom rehearsals and then leading us face-to-face (distanced and with masks) in a field and a car park as well as a concert in the bandstand at Cae Glas Park. Gradually over the months rehearsals

returned to normal, but Cantiones only survived the pandemic with Martin’s hard work.

Since then, the choir has benefitted enormously from his teaching and encouragement and has been introduced to a wide variety of composers. There have been a number of real high points; the choir’s 40th Anniversary concert of Haydn’s Creation at The Holroyd Theatre, Dvorak’s Stabat Mater, and above all Edward Elgar’s beautiful and moving Dream of Gerontius for which Cantiones joined the Chester Bach Singers and the Chester Philharmonic Orchestra in a packed Chester Cathedral.

Thank you to new sponsors

Oswestry Boys & Girls Club

Under 8 Rangers would like to thank Tudor Hughes of North Shropshire Scaffolding for kindly sponsoring their New Winter Coats this season.

Tudor and his Granddaughter Connie came to meet and present the boys with their new jackets, and as a BIG thank you from the team they presented them with a bottle of wine and a bottle of whiskey. Once again many thanks Tudor, here’s to warmer days!

better during the enjoyable choir days at Gladstone’s Library at Hawarden so he will be very much missed. The choir will be joined by a new Musical Director in January, details of which will be announced after Christmas.

So as the year draws to a close Cantiones’ last concert under Martin Bussey’s direction, the traditional Christmas Concert, will take place on 21 December at 3:30pm in Christ Church. We hope that as many as possible will come to join us for this, our final musical outing with Martin.

We all got to know Martin

Council backs campaign to save Oswestry Post Office

People across Oswestry and the wider area are being encouraged to make their voices heard and sign the petition launched by Helen Morgan MP to Save Oswestry Post Office after the Post Office announced potential closure plans.

The move was unanimously backed at last night’s Extraordinary Council Meeting which had been called by the Mayor of Oswestry Cllr Mike Isherwood.

During the packed meeting, councillors heard from concerned residents and business owners who highlighted the massively important lifeline Oswestry Post Office is for many in the town and neighbouring communities.

The Mayor said, “It is clear that many of us still hugely rely on its services to pay bills, tax their vehicles and more, while businesses across the town are now having to use it for their daily banking needs due to the closure of multiple bank branches in the past couple of years.

“Closing our branch would be a devastating blow for

residents in Oswestry and our surrounding area. It is critically important that the Post Office hears the scale of the opposition to any potential closure.”

“We will do all we can to ensure this vital community asset is not lost, and its services protected.”

The Mayor added, “All councillors were united in expressing their complete opposition to any partial or complete closure of Oswestry Post Office. There is no evidence to justify the thought of it.

“Its closure would disproportionately affect the most vulnerable members of our community, forcing them to travel further afield for services they can currently access locally.

“The closure would also harm local businesses, many of whom depend on the post office for daily operations. Losing this service could create additional barriers for small businesses already under pressure in the current economic climate.”

Minutes with the MP

The floods that residents in Melverley, Gobowen, and other parts of North Shropshire have been dealing with lately are a stark reminder of the challenges our rural communities face.

Villages have been cut off, homes inundated, and farmland submerged under water. For some farmers, this isn’t just about the loss of a crop—it’s the loss of their livelihoods, compounded year after year by the same recurring problems.

As Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Flooding and Flooded Communities, I’ve been working hard to push the Government for better flooding preparedness. During a recent House of Commons debate, I urged the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs to review the way flooding funding is allocated.

It’s vital that farmers, who are often forced to hold back vast quantities of water upstream, are compensated for this essential role in protecting downstream communities.

This is about fairness. Right now, farmers in North Shropshire are bearing the brunt of flooding impacts without adequate recognition or support. In many cases, they are unable to plant or harvest their crops—this year and potentially next—because of waterlogged fields.

It’s unacceptable that those working tirelessly to feed the nation are left struggling to keep their businesses afloat.

The Government must act. While I welcome the announcement of an additional £60 million for floodaffected farmers, we need a long-term solution that addresses both prevention and recovery. Investing in robust flood defences, improving drainage systems, and adapting land management practices will not only protect homes and businesses but also safeguard our rural economy.

Flooding is not just a North Shropshire issue—it’s a national challenge. But for those in places like Melverley and Gobowen, the impacts are immediate and personal. It’s my commitment to ensure their voices are heard, and their concerns are addressed, in Westminster and beyond.

Put a spring in your step and join Hope House’s Llangollen Canal Walk

Hundreds of walkers will be pulling on their boots and trekking a 10-mile route along the Llangollen Canal to raise money for Hope House Children’s Hospices next spring.

On Sunday 23 March, walkers can join together and take on the ever-popular annual yomp, which starts at the Trevor Basin in Llangollen, before heading over the world-famous and majestic Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, which provides breathtaking views as you cross the famous arches.

From there walkers follow the canal all the way to The Poachers pub at Chirk for refreshments before heading back, where all participants will receive their special 2025 medals.

Last year the event, which is now in its 15th year, raised around £20,000.

Hope House Children’s Hospices fundraiser, Vicky Bradbeer said, “This wonderful event is guaranteed to put a smile on your face and a spring in your step next March. Bring along friends, family, colleagues and those four-legged friends and embrace the great outdoors.

“The canal walk is extremely popular and wellsupported and has always been a sell out, so make sure you sign up and get your tickets via the Hope House website to avoid disappointment.”

The 2025 event has been sponsored by Chirk-based Kronospan.

“Kronospan are proud to continue our support for Hope House & Tŷ Gobaith by getting our walking boots on and sponsoring the 2025 Llangollen Canal Walk,” said Ben Spruce, Kronospan’s Chief Financial Officer.

Hope House Children’s Hospices is here to provide specialist nursing care and support to children and their families, who live in Shropshire, Cheshire, North and Mid Wales.

Its mission is to reach every child with a lifethreatening condition in the area, to give them and their family access to professional care and improve their quality of life, and to raise the money needed to do this.

It costs £9.6 million every year to run its services. Approximately two month’s income comes from statutory sources and for the other 10 months of the year is dependent on public support.

By joining the Llangollen Canal Walk you will be helping to raise these vital funds, as well an enjoying a family friendly fun day out in the spring air.

Tickets for the event are £15 for adults and £5 for children, and all entrants will get a special bespoke 2025 medal and a goody bag at the halfway point.

Slimming World Consultant Claire’s Story

Claire Morris has been a Slimming World consultant in Oswestry for over 12 years after transforming her life by losing 7.5 stone.

She says, “When I first joined Slimming World as a member back in 2006, I never dreamt that I would end up helping other people to lose weight too. I’d always struggled with my weight and had tried various diets, but I never stuck with them.

“I love food but had very little knowledge of nutrition and how to lose weight in a healthy way and always got tired of restricting what I ate so when I discovered how generous the Slimming World Food Optimising plan was, I embraced it fully.

“I never went hungry because I could eat my favourite foods such as pasta and curries. I adapted it to fit in with family life so I wasn’t cooking separate meals and I also, slowly I might add, started to incorporate activity into my daily life too by using the Body Magic physical activity programme and have since run marathons and found a love for mountain climbing.

I love food but had very little knowledge of nutrition and how to lose weight in a healthy way and always got tired of restricting what I ate.

“Fast forward to now and I’ve helped to support so many wonderful members make changes to how they not only eat, but also with the psychology of mindset and behavioural change around food and activity, and the support the members have for each other is second to none.”

BOOKSHELF CHILDREN’S BOOK REVIEW BOOKA BOOK SHOP

My Path by Jana Curll

Thomas, aged 8, Book Worms

My Path is a great book where you can follow the snail’s path with your own finger. It leaves you on a cliff-hanger when the snail goes off. A great picture book for the young.

Finn, aged 7, Book Mice

I enjoyed the fact that the snail took his own path and was very independent. Sometimes you have to do your own thing, and own it, because you will not learn anything about yourself if you follow what others do. Follow your own path and your own heart.

To get involved in selecting the Children’s Choice, sign up for one of Booka Bookshop’s Junior Book Clubs. Book Mice is for 7+ and meets on the 3rd Monday of every month. Books Worms is for 9+ and meets on the 3rd Tuesday of every month. Book Dragons is for 12+ and meets on the 3rd Wednesday of every month. Book Clubs run only during term time from 4:15 to 5pm. 15 Jan: OUR KIND OF TRAITOR (15): This twisting thriller from master spy-teller John le Carre sees an innocent British couple (Ewen McGregor and Naomi Harris) caught up in a former Russian mafia man’s attempt to cross over to the UK intelligence services. His trading card: exposing a vein of corruption

that runs right to the heart of the City of London. The suspense is built relentlessly, keeping you guessing as to who is what...

22 Jan: AMA GLORIA (12A): Gifted six year old Cleo (a superb debut from Louise Mauroy-Panzani) is a middle-class Parisian whose world falls apart when her beloved nanny Gloria is forced to return to Cape Verde. Poached Pears in blackberry Wine

This sophisticated dessert not only looks stunning but it’s easier to make than you might think. Prepare it earlier and leave to chill until ready to serve.

Ingred I ents

• 300ml cheap red wine

• 200ml water

• 75g caster sugar

• 225g blackberries

• 6 pears

• 1 cinnamon stick, halved

• 6 cloves

• 1 tbsp cornflour to serve (optional)

• 25g amaretti biscuits

• 250ml vegan crème fraîche

method

1. Choose a saucepan that the pears will fit snugly into, then add the wine, water and sugar to the pan. Add half the blackberries and heat gently for 5 minutes until the sugar has dissolved. Crush the blackberries with a potato masher, press the syrup through a sieve and discard the blackberry seeds, then return the syrup to the saucepan.

2. Peel the pears leaving the stalks on, then add to the blackberry wine with the cinnamon stick and cloves. Simmer gently for 10-15 minutes, turning the pears until evenly coloured.

3. Lift the pears out of the wine and transfer to a bowl. Mix the cornflour with a little water in a cup until a smooth paste. Stir into the blackberry wine, then bring to the boil, stirring until thickened and smooth. Pour the syrup over the pears, then add the remaining blackberries and leave to cool.

4. If serving with amaretti cream, break the biscuits into small pieces with your fingertips, then fold into the carton of crème fraîche. Serve with dollops alongside the pears.

Oswestry Training Hub Opening its doors for an event on 28 January at The Marches School

The Alliance of Leading Learning are holding a FREE open event on Tuesday 28 January 2025, from 4pm to 6pm at The Marches School in Oswestry.

This event opens our door to the local community giving anyone the opportunity to come and see our training facility in the heart of Oswestry. The event aims at raising awareness of the outstanding facility and what training we offer for the teaching and local community.

Teacher Training

The Alliance of Leading Learning is one of the most experienced providers of teacher training in the West Midlands, boasting over twenty years of innovative and successful programmes.

The Alliance makes up the professional training arm of the Marches Academy Trust, a growing Trust which currently supports 11 schools across Shropshire. The Alliance of Leading Learning working with the Shropshire and Telford Education Partnership combines in-depth knowledge and joint enterprise to remain at the forefront of developing the highest quality of teacher training.

If you are thinking about a career in teaching, come and see us on the 28 January. We can offer teacher training opportunities across Early Years, Primary and Secondary phases of education. If you are an existing teacher we will also be available to talk to you about programmes to enhance your teaching role and ways to support you, so you have lasting impact on children and young people.

Claire Jones, responsible for coordinating the Initial Teacher Training (ITT) said; “Our open day will be a great opportunity for anyone to come along and meet the team

involved in ITT and National Professional Qualifications (NPQs). It will be a fantastic chance for prospective trainees to have an informal chat about how they might get into teaching, or if they are already working in education, we can provide advice about the programmes available to help them progress into a leadership role”.

Community Training / Facilities

As well as our facility being used by educational providers the ALL team also has fantastic facilities available to local businesses. We provide a range of training that is available to local businesses. This includes First Aid, Fire Safety, Food Safety, Defib and Safeguarding Training. The advantage of using the Alliance for these short courses is that training is delivered locally at reasonable prices. We have many local organisations using our training including Allenby Douglas, Hope House, National Trust and many local primary schools. Alongside this our lovely well-furnished rooms are available for hire.

Helen Lloyd who overseas the training offer and room hire adds she “will be happy to see anyone interested in finding a facility for meetings or training. We will also have on hand some of our trainers who will be able to advise you on the different courses we can deliver”.

Why Come and See Us?

As well as giving us an opportunity to show off what we do for the local community we will be entering every attendee into a free prize draw. The prizes will include a free first aid course and a voucher for a local business in Oswestry.

For more information contact: Miriam Marais, Professional Learning Administration Coordinator, visit the Alliance of Leading Learning’s website leadinglearning.co.uk or check out our social media feed for more information about the event.

Students engage in programs like the Combined Cadet Force, the Duke of Edinburgh Award and various sports and arts initiatives, as well as volunteering opportunities in the local community. Leadership development is integrated into the curriculum, encouraging students to step out of their comfort zones and build resilience, time management and perseverance. Students cultivate the qualities necessary to become effective leaders and productive members of society, ready to face future challenges with confidence.

We embrace a global perspective, as a boarding school which fosters an inclusive environment of students from diverse international backgrounds. By integrating global awareness into the curriculum, students gain insights into different cultures and global issues. Our international schools in Muscat, Riyadh and Doha further enhance this global outlook. The college’s commitment to developing a global mindset ensures that students are not only academically prepared but also culturally competent, enabling them to navigate and contribute positively to the global community.

Healthy Focus

Get moving in 2025

Are you setting health related New Years’ resolutions? Avoid failure and go small!

lifestyle contributes to around 70% of chronic long-term illness such as diabetes and heart disease. These illnesses are both avoidable and reversable so if we can change our behaviour even a little, we will achieve great results. However, change can be hard, and researchers have shown that only 19% of individuals keep their resolutions beyond mid-January.

One way to make lasting change is to start small. The British Society of Lifestyle Medicine (www.bslm1change.org) , of which I am a certified practitioner member, recommends #1change with the TBC approach:

Trigger – Choose something you commonly do daily e.g. brush teeth

Behaviour – Think of something you want to change – e.g. do push-ups. Start with one just to establish the habit. Every time you brush your teeth, do a push-up!

Celebrate – pat yourself on your back every time you “brush and push” and share your success with your friends.

Setting a goal can really help focus the mind, why not check out Adrenaline Sporting Events line up for next year and sign up for a cycling or running event around Oswestry? www. adrenalinesportingevents.co.uk or get in touch with one of the gyms locally – Zest, Core, Active8, Evolution or the Leisure Centre if getting more active is a goal – but remember to start small.

Dental Care for a Beaming Smile

There’s nothing quite as disruptive as a sore tooth keeping you up at night or the sudden panic of a cracked filling in the middle of dinner. Whether it’s a nagging ache, unexpected damage, or simply staying on top of your teeth maintenance, oral health issues can quickly take a toll on your well-being. That’s where Thomas Dental comes in - a trusted practice dedicated to helping patients like you regain comfort, confidence, and a brilliant smile. With a blend of advanced techniques and a patient-first approach, they’re here to address your dental concerns and ensure your smile stays healthy for years to come.

Since 1976, Thomas Dental has been bringing smiles to Oswestry with their services. From oral hygiene and care, to enhancing patient’s smiles with cosmetic treatment, people keep coming back because of the level of care they receive.

“We’re a friendly and welcoming place and always make sure we treat nervous patients with great care,” says Practice Manager Jodie.

“We understand that some people avoid the dentist for years

before they start experiencing pain or a problem that needs our help. We will take the time to make you feel comfortable and safe through any procedure you have.”

Having regular check-ups with your dentist is vital to maintain healthy gums and spot any issues as they start developing. Catching dental issues early, often means minor work instead of major. This also allows time for you and the dentist to discuss future possible treatments.

“Blood is thicker than water”

We’ve just had the season of giving but how about continuing this with the gift of health and even life? January is blood donation month and the NHS saves 3 lives per hour with blood transfusions. Your blood is an amazing substance: it carries oxygen, nourishes your tissues, carries away waste, fights infection and heals wounds amongst an array of other functions we take for granted. Your body makes 2 million red blood cells every second so it only takes a matter of days or a few weeks to replenish the 1 pint given at a donation. Not everyone is eligible to donate blood: you must be between 17 and 65yrs old and weigh between 50kg (7st 12lb) and 158kg (25 stone). If you are a woman under 20yrs old weighing less than 65kg or shorter than 5 foot 6 inches you can check on the NHS website blood.co.uk to see if you have enough blood!

I remember sessions at the Memorial Hall, but the nearest venues listed on the National Blood transfusion website now seem to be in Shrewsbury. I have donated a few times in my life – once during the night I had to take blood from myself to give to a child in a special care baby unit. If I remember it was only 40mls I had to donate. My blood group is O positive so basically I am common! Men can donate every 12 weeks – women every 16 weeks, although checks are done on every donation to screen for iron deficiency and make sure the donation is okay to proceed.

There is a long list of reasons why a person might not be able to donate and these are easy to find on the website. The NHS relies on blood donors and there is a bit of a crisis of donation at the moment so if you are thinking about this then do more than think - act!

Our prices are up to 20% less than other home-care providers, o ering top-notch care with experienced and caring workers.

Long term counselling and emotional support should be available to everyone, regardless of their financial situation.

THE PET EFFECT

The positive impact of companion animals on health is so well known that it’s called ‘the pet effect’. How might they help?

Improved well-being Pets can boost your mood and calm you down, lowering levels of the stress hormone cortisol and increasing serotonin, the feel-good chemical. This can happen just by watching fish in a tank or stroking your cat.

Increased fitness A dog forces you to get outside and exercise, making it much easier to reach your recommended 150 minutes of physical activity a week. Meanwhile, riding a horse can burn up to 400 calories an hour.

Protection against heart disease Multiple studies flag up the beneficial effect of pets on the cardiovascular system. Research has found that pet owners have lower blood pressure and cholesterol,

Professional Dog Groomer in Oswestry

and are less likely to die of heart disease. Cats get a particularly good press: people who’d never had a cat were found to have a 40% higher chance of dying from a heart attack, while cat owners also had fewer strokes.

More social interaction Pets can help people feel less lonely. Beyond that, dog owners are more likely to meet and chat with other humans when they’re out and about with their canine companions. This can be very important if you live alone.

Better cognition A 2022 study found that people with pets concentrated better, processed information more quickly and had a better memory than those without. The suggestion was furry friends could lower cognitive age by 15 years.

Saving Oswestry’s Abandoned Cats

After the pandemic, the number of stray and abandoned cats rose to an overwhelming high and for any number of reasons, people couldn’t cope with their new pets once normal life resumed.

PurrfectlyFeral (Llangedwyn Cat Rescue) was founded back at the beginning of 2022 and is run singlehandedly by Shelley, whilst raising her 4 children and caring for numerous pets including dogs, poultry, sheep and a number of sanctuary cats who can’t be rehomed due to various issues.

Shelley has always been passionate about animals. “My childhood dream was to become a vet, but my life changed after completing a National Diploma in Animal Care, but helping animals has always been at the forefront of my mind, and that’s where the idea to open a cat rescue came from.”

Initially, Shelley started helping cats in the local area, including ferals who were breeding out of control, injured stray cats and a litter of young kittens orphaned after their mum was killed on one of the busy main roads in the Tanat Valley.

She set up a Facebook page to share advice and raise awareness, but it soon became apparent the surrounding areas also needed help, and Shelley was soon receiving calls from Oswestry, Welshpool and villages in between. This has since expanded to places as far as Stafford and the Elan Valley in Wales.

“The cats that come through my door need help for a wide variety of issues. Some have been neglected, abused or abandoned, others are due to a change in circumstances such as owners’ ill health or an imminent admittance into hospital or care home. I’ve also been asked to help with colonies of cats that have formed due to unneutered strays breeding out of control. This presents alot of problems due to the sheer number - we can see anything from 20-30 plus per colony,” Shelley explains.

“I’m usually alerted to cases by

concerned members of the public, but I’ve also received calls from the emergency services, local veterinary clinics and the local authority in the past. Some cats are brought to me, and some can’t be caught because they’re so frightened. When that happens, I go out to assess the situation and deploy a humane trap.

“All cats are assessed and receive routine parasite treatment upon arrival as well as any veterinary care they need. This includes any urgent treatment like eye removal operations caused by untreated cat flu or unexplained head trauma. Others have had tail amputations due to suspected road accidents. Thankfully we are lucky enough to have the fantastic Aran Vets in Llanfyllin, only 10 minutes away and on hand at the drop of a hat.”

A cat’s stay with Shelley can be anything from a few weeks to months, and they are all housed in custom built pens. Shelley’s latest goal is to raise enough money to connect an electric supply so she can add heaters to the pens, which will keep the cats warm during the winter. She also needs Perspex sheets to help infection control and prevent viruses spreading.

“As a non-profit rescue I rely totally on the goodwill and generosity of the general public. The support I’ve received from Oswestry, the surrounding areas and further afield has been absolutely mind blowing

process of trapping and neutering. Amber is approx 6 months old but the size of an 8 week old kitten due to inbreeding and malnutrition.:

Above, L-R: Hugo was an unneutered stray. Gandalf was unneutered, neglected & severely malnourished. Barry was the victim of abuse, unneutered and had suffered head trauma resulting in the loss of his eye.

and I honestly can’t express my appreciation enough.”

All cats and kittens are neutered and microchipped as a minimum before being put up for adoption.

If you would like to adopt a cat/ kitten or need any help/advice with cat related issues, contact Shelley on Facebook via her page PurrfectlyFeral (Llangedwyn Cat Rescue).

RICS Chartered Surveyor and Valuer, and Estate Agent retires

Roger Lunt, a well-known and well respected local RICS Chartered Surveyor and Valuer, and Estate Agent in Oswestry for many years has announced his retirement.

He trained at Hammersmith and West London College. Qualified as an Associate of The Incorporated Society of Valuers and Auctioneers in 1983, progressing to Fellow in 1994, and joining The Royal institute of Chartered Surveyors in January 2000 as a Fellow. A career as a property professional of over 40 years. He started his career with Hall Wateridge & Owen. He was also an auctioneer at Oswestry Livestock Auctions for a period when working for Bowen Son & Watson, and later, with another well know surveyor Michael Tomley, started their own business, known as Lunt Tomley Surveyors

and Estate Agents. Lunt Tomley then merged with Morris Marshall & Poole in 2004, where Roger was a partner in the firm until his retirement at the end of 2024.

During his career he has probably visited hundreds and hundreds of properties and I’m sure there is not many a street in the town and surrounding villages that he has not been to. I’m sure he could tell many tales about some of the properties he has visited in the course of his work, and the numerous characters along the way.

Oswestry charity and law firm raising awareness of volunteering

Volunteering to help a local charity can have a positive effect on not only the community but the volunteers themselves - so what’s stopping you?

Oswestry Community Action, known as Qube, has been working with volunteers for over 20 years, and has teamed up with Lanyon Bowdler Solicitors to tell people more about the work of the charity.

In the latest episode of the firm’s Legal Lounge podcast, Kate Lawson, a private client solicitor in Lanyon Bowdler’s Oswestry office, speaks with Holly Corrigan, of Qube, about what the charity does and how people can get involved.

Kate says: “We were delighted to invite Holly from Qube into the Lanyon Bowdler offices for a good chat about how the charity helps people in Oswestry and the surrounding areas.

“The charity is based right in the centre of Oswestry in Oswald Road, and there is always a lot going on, with people coming together for a wide range of activities. Any time I have visited, there is always a welcoming atmosphere and there’s a really nice feeling when you walk through the door.”

The aim of Qube is to improve the quality of life of

people living in the local area through the provision of wellbeing services, community transport, volunteering and a variety of arts and cultural activities.

Holly says: “One of our key areas is the volunteer centre at Qube, and we have a wealth of experience in everything to do with volunteering - from recruiting to supporting and training, so organisations can retain their volunteers.

“We have a large database of volunteering opportunities with a range of organisations, so I would heartily recommend anyone interested to get in touch for more information.

“Whether you would like to help by driving a minibus, or helping to tend a communal garden, volunteering is a fantastic way to give something back to the community.

“We know from experience that volunteering can be hugely rewarding for the individual themselves, as well as being a major benefit to other people.”

30 Years of Excellence in Health and Safety Training

For 30 years, Warwick Training and Safety has stood as a trusted leader in the field of health and safety training, and mechanical handling equipment training. From humble beginnings to becoming a recognised leader in the industry, our commitment has always been to equip businesses and individuals with the knowledge, skills, and confidence they need to ensure safe work practices.

Founded by Austen Coleman, James his son joined 10 years later. Over the years, we’ve worked to support organisations to meet their legal obligations, maintaining workplace safety, and building a culture where health and safety is priority. Our experience covers from construction and manufacturing to logistics and retail. This means we understand the unique challenges businesses face when it comes to safety compliance and workforce training. As a result, we’ve tailored our services to address these needs, ensuring every course delivered is relevant, practical, and impactful.

Mechanical handling equipment training programs include:

• Forklift operator training (counterbalance, reach trucks, etc.)

• Mobile elevating work platform (MEWP) training

• Overhead crane and hoist operation

These courses are designed to meet industry standards and are delivered by certified instructors with extensive experience in mechanical handling. Training ensures operators are competent, confident, and compliant with safety regulations, reducing the risk of accidents and downtime.

Rustic Earth

This is a rugged aesthetic that uses plenty of natural materials and gives off a modern cozy sustainability vibe. It’s an easy look to incorporate; rough hewn wood and wrought Iron, handcrafted details and deep earthy tones all add character, and go hand in hand with textured and patterned fabrics. Visual hard surfaces like wood, limestone or brick can be countered with soft organic shapes that nod to nature. Think deep earthy browns, soft natural fabrics and clutter free zones. Here’s a collection of pieces that together, tie in the scheme.

January in the garden

Have you noticed how much bigger your garden looks at this time of year? The annuals have gone, the perennials have died-back and your winter pruning is finished. Now is the ideal time for new ideas - it’s much easier to do some redesigning now. However, with the weather we’ve been having, keep an eye on the forecast or you might find yourself gardening in a quagmire. Looking at my garden recently, I realised for a good 4 or 5 months of the year it’s rather barren and unattractive. Why should a garden just be for the warmer times? So, this year I’m thinking of making some changes and creating interest all year round. There are some winter flowering shrubs and plants that I can integrate into the plan, but as most of my garden is in pots I need to remember

that will shorten the plants lifespan, so may need replacing every few years. When plants have outgrown their pots, I usually pass to friends with bigger gardens for more legroom.

Winter honeysuckle or winter clematis will brighten a dull wall or fence. Japanese quince is one of the earliest flowering shrubs and depending on the variety of witch hazel you choose it can flower late autumn or early in the spring. Mahonia is a favourite with its bright yellow spikes of flowers in late October and November. It may continue well into December and makes an attractive centrepiece for the Christmas table.

Don’t forget some of the summer plants produce colourful berries, or attractive seed heads which remain

and provide food for the winter birds. Adding pots of winter pansies violas, hardy cyclamen and primula will brighten up even the dullest corner. Just make sure they are well drained, and if snow is forecast give them a bit of cover.

Finally, on a nice bright day, empty out the shed and give the garden tools a good clean and protect them with a coat of boiled linseed oil.

PLAN FOR A BRIGHTER FUTURE

BUILDING BETTER FINANCES IN 2025

The new year is a time for fresh starts – from improving your health and getting fitter to setting the goals you’d like to achieve in the months ahead.

And for many, taking better control of their finances is at the top of their to-do list.

The key is pinpointing what you want to achieve financially and then mapping out how to get there.

If saving more money is your focus, start by checking how your finances currently stack up. Assess your savings, pension, investments and any assets, and calculate how much income they will roughly provide in the future. If it’s not quite where you need it be, sit down and see if you can find ways to help bridge this gap.

If your priority, on the other hand, is growing your wealth, task yourself with looking for opportunities to make this happen. Would you be in a stronger position if you changed your investment strategy? Could you take advantage of the market changes by investing now? Investments can offer significant gains but are a long-term strategy so consider carefully which approach would be best suited to your needs. Financial goals aren’t just about making or saving money either. Current global events might be prompting you to reconsider how and where you invest. If so, review whether your current portfolio matches your views. There are more ethical investments on the market than ever before, meaning it’s now possible to gain a financial return without sacrificing your moral principles.

Finally, remember that being protected is crucial. Recent years have been a reminder that life is unpredictable and can often throw curveballs when we least expect them. The good news is that there are ways you can safeguard yourself financially through protective insurances like critical illness cover, income protection and life insurance.

Whatever your goals this year, call Belgrave Wincham on 01691 886554 to arrange a free, no-obligation, 60-minute consultation with our friendly experts.

Belgrave Wincham Limited is an appointed representative of ValidPath Limited, which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority under FRN 197107. Belgrave Wicham Ltd registered in England and Wales number 12167416.

My husband has died, do I need to apply for probate?

Q: My late husband always dealt with our finances and now he has died I am ‘lost’. In his Will he has left everything to me and our children and I am his executor. I also had power of attorney for him. Do I still need to apply for probate?

A: The need for probate does not depend on whether the deceased person left a Will, it depends on their financial circumstances. Probate is usually needed before an estate can be administered. The administration of an estate includes settling debts, transferring assets and distributing inheritance to beneficiaries. Whether probate is needed depends on what a person owned before they died.

If a deceased person owned their own home solely in their name, then probate is usually required before their property can be sold or transferred. Similarly, if they owned shares in their sole name or had more than £30,000 in a bank account in their sole name, again probate would most likely be needed. If their home is however owned with a spouse as joint tenants, and their savings are in a joint account, then probate is unlikely to be needed because these assets will simply transfer to the surviving owner. Most banks will release up to £30,000 without probate.

Factors that can affect the complexity of an estate include the value and nature of the deceased’s assets and the number of beneficiaries. As every estate is different, depending on the complexity of it the length of time it takes to administer it can vary. To allow for potential variations an executor effectively has up to one year to administer an estate and obtain probate. This is often referred to as the ‘executor’s year’.

If you are not confident about administering your husband’s Will and applying for probate you can ask a solicitor for a quotation to do it on your behalf.

This question has been answered by Jessica Wright, a Solicitor with GHP Legal.  If you would like to speak to someone about this or any other legal matter, please visit our website www.ghplegal. com and use the contact us form, or call us on: Wrexham 01978 291456, Llangollen 01978 860313, Oswestry 01691 659194
