Spring is all about soft transitions, natural blends, and low-maintenance beauty. This season, we’re seeing a shift toward warmth, brightness, and effortlessly lived-in styles. Whether you’re a brunette, blonde, or platinum lover, these trending techniques will keep your hair looking fresh.
Perfect for: Brunettes looking for soft dimension and effortless warmth.
Why it’s trending: This technique adds depth and movement to brown hair with rich, warm chocolate and toffee tones, creating a natural, sun-kissed effect. The hand-painted balayage allows for a seamless grow-out, making it perfect for those who want a low-maintenance yet luxurious look.
Best for: Medium to dark brunettes who want to enhance their natural base while adding soft contrast.
Perfect for: Blondes who want rich warmth and effortless maintenance.
Why it’s trending: Golden, honey, and buttery tones are making a comeback, replacing cool blondes with a softer, more radiant look. The melted root technique keeps regrowth subtle, giving an ultranatural blend that extends time between salon visits.
Best for: Light to medium blondes who want a lived-in, natural effect. Pro tip: Pair with toning treatments to keep the warmth looking radiant, not brassy.
Icy Babylights –Platinum Blonde with a Soft Blend
Perfect for: Cool-toned blondes craving a fresh, bright, yet blended look.
Why it’s trending: Icy blondes remain a statement, but this season, the focus is on keeping it soft and blended at the roots for a more natural transition. Micro-fine babylights lift the hair while maintaining a delicate, seamless grow-out.
Best for: Those with naturally light or medium bases who love a bright, cool-toned blonde but want a softer root shadow for maintenance.
Bonus Styling Tip for Spring: Pair these colour techniques with glossy waves, undone textures, and soft, effortless styling for a fresh, spring-ready look.

Spring is in full swing and isn’t it beautiful. The days are longer, the dawn chorus welcomes the day and spring flowers are out in full bloom. Everything feels new and fresh, full of possibility. A time of awakening and renewal.
Take a moment. Pause. Notice. Do it now, look up and out of the window, look around you. Can you hear the birds, smell the flowers, see new shoots reaching out of the earth, the fresh young leaves, the last of the blossom?
It’s a wondrous thing, isn’t it. How long ago the seemingly barren earth of winter feels, with nature now so full of life. Flowers, leaves, birds, squirrels, insects, sunshine, the land so green. All of life is there in nature. And we are nature too. Somewhere along the way we seem to have separated ourselves from nature. We are human and the plants and animals, they are nature. But we are all made of the same components: cells, molecules, DNA. We all need oxygen, food, and water to survive. We are nature.
Nature is full of ‘different’, different colours, shapes, textures, patterns, smells, sizes. Everything plays its part and plays it to their fullest. One tree doesn’t grow small and gnarled so that the other trees won’t feel uncomfortable or threatened by its magnificence. Birds don’t sing more quietly or off key to avoid seeming big-headed or arrogant. Each flower blooms its greatness.
Are you blooming? Are you living your greatest potential? Are you owning your gifts, shining your bright light in this world? My greatest wish for you is that you do. Because you are magnificent. You are the only you on the planet, the only you that ever will be on the planet, in this universe. In all of the universes! Even twins are unique in their characters, personalities, perspectives, likes and dislikes, experiences.
There are many messages out there, from society, religion, family, peers about not being ‘too big’, ‘too much’, ‘too bold’, ‘too loud’, ‘too clever’. It is not ok to be ‘up yourself’, ‘full of yourself’, ‘arrogant’, ‘a showoff’. What do these things even mean? Someone was telling me recently that they no longer like a certain TV personality “since they moved to America and became really arrogant.” I don’t watch a lot of TV, and I don’t know much about this celebrity, but from what I have seen I’ve never picked up ‘arrogance’. I wondered, is what they’re perceiving as arrogance, what I’m perceiving as confidence?
It’s all subjective you see. It all comes down to perception and opinion. Two people standing near a tree, watching a branch come down will have different experiences based on their beliefs, observations, opinions, etc. One may see destruction, the other improvement.
You’re never going to be everyone’s cup of tea my dear one, so please, for your own sake, stop trying to be. It’s exhausting. Allow yourself to be You. You will attract people who like your vibe. True friends will love you unconditionally (if they don’t, they’re not true friends). We can’t control what others think or feel about us, we can’t control whether they like us or not. So, let’s stop trying my dear. Let it go. Let it be. Let them be. Let you be and just be You.
Don’t make yourself small. Don’t be a pastel version of yourself. Don’t edit yourself. Be YOU. All of you. And the more You that you allow yourself to be, the more of You you will discover and unfurl and blossom into.
So, during this time of awakening and renewal, my wish for you is to be more like the trees, birds and flowers, to be all of You; magnificent, one-and-only You.

Do you struggle with constant lower back pain? It can really impact your life. Simple tasks become difficult, and enjoyment diminishes. But there’s hope! Physiotherapy offers a route to recovery. This article will guide you through physiotherapy’s role in managing chronic lower back pain.
What does “chronic” really mean when we’re talking about pain? How is it different from acute back pain? Chronic pain is complex. It’s not just about the initial injury. It’s about how your body and mind react over time. Pain is considered chronic when it lasts for more than three months. Unlike sudden, acute pain, chronic lower back pain hangs around. Some common causes include arthritis and disc problems. What are some of the other risk factors? They may include poor posture, flat feet, and a lack of exercise.
Physiotherapy offers many benefits for managing chronic pain. It takes an active approach to rehabilitation. This empowers you to take control of your health. So, what can you expect from it? Physiotherapy can reduce pain and improve your mobility; you’ll also find increased strength and a better quality of life. It addresses the root causes of your discomfort and provides you with tools to manage it long term.
Physiotherapy starts with a thorough assessment because getting an accurate diagnosis is key. This allows the treatment to be tailored specifically for you. Together, we will set goals. These goals will be realistic and achievable - an individualised treatment plan will then be developed.
A range of techniques are available. They’re designed to address different aspects of your pain and treatment is always tailored to your specific needs. So, what might your treatment include?
Spinal mobilisation and manipulation can help restore movement. Soft tissue mobilisation and massage can relieve muscle tension. Your physio will select the best techniques for your pain.
Core strengthening exercises are important for stability. Stretching and flexibility exercises improve range of motion. Low-impact aerobic exercises boost overall fitness. These movements can make a difference to your life.
Preventing future episodes of back pain is possible and a long-term commitment to health and wellness is key. What can you do to stay pain-free? Keep up your regular exercise routine, practice good posture and body mechanics. These habits help you maintain the gains you’ve made. Periodic check-ins with your physiotherapist are valuable. Address any new or recurring pain promptly because early intervention can prevent problems from worsening.
Physiotherapy can be a game-changer in managing chronic lower back pain. It offers pain relief, improved function, and a better quality of life. Seeking professional help is the first step so, don’t delay seeking treatment.
Consult with a physiotherapist for an assessment and treatment plan you can book today via www.shropshirephysiotherapy.co.uk
A special installation to mark the 80th anniversary of VE (Victory in Europe) Day in 2025, which is being created by a group of knitters in France, will be a centrepiece at this year’s Wonderwool Wales event in the heart of Mid Wales.
Tansy Forster and her fellow knitters have offered to create the new installation especially for the 19th Wonderwool Wales, the premier wool and natural fibre festival in Wales which will be held at the Royal Welsh Showground, Builth Wells on April 26 and 27.
“We are thrilled that Tansy and her group of fellow knitters in France are producing the VE Day display just for us and it will take pride of place as our exhibition for 2025 and which we hope will raise lots of money, through donations, for the Wales Air Ambulance.” said Wonderwool Wales director Chrissie Menzies.
“I am certain that the exhibition will attract a lot of interest here in Wales and across the UK, it is exciting to have this work made exclusively for our 2025 show and I can’t wait to see their work.”

Already booked for Woolschool workshops in 2025 are Moebius Knitting with Kath Andrews, and An Introduction to Indian Block Printing along with Art Yarns – Corespinning with Sarah Stacey, a Wonderwool Wales director.
Other workshops include Dorset Buttons, Peg Loom Weaving with Sharon Smith of Wild Welsh Wool, Bringing Eyes to Life in needle felting with Emma Fountain, and Beaded Keyrings with Rosie of Moon Beads while Ruth Packham will be showing students how to felt one of her Quirky Birds.

Whittington Music Festival is going from strength to strength and has a sound reputation for musical excellence. In both 2023 and 2024 concerts were sold out. Thanks to the support of local businesses including Oswestry School and Perspective Northwest, and a growing number of loyal sponsors, the festival is on a firm footing. This year the festival has also been fortunate to secure a grant from Oswestry Rotary Club’s Mary Hignett Bequest Fund towards our outreach work with schools and Derwen College, and from the Walker Trust based in Shrewsbury.
This year, several artists are returning to Whittington, including star violinist Braimah Kanneh-Mason, international tenor Mark Padmore and award-winning jazz pianist Zoe Rahman. And for the first time we have our own string quartet – the Whittington Quartet – who will perform Schubert’s glorious Death and the Maiden Quartet D810 during the evening concert on Saturday 17 May.
The festival opens on Thursday 15 May at 7.30pm with piano quartets by Mozart and Brahms and will close on Sunday 18 May at 3.00pm with a trio of sextets by Strauss, Brahms and Schoenberg (his Op.4). On Saturday morning from 10.00am at Whittington Church, talented
local teenagers will be coached by festival musicians (admission free) followed at 2pm by a Family Concert including the quintet ‘Night Music from the Streets of Madrid’ by Boccherini, and after that, Jazz in the Afternoon with Zoe Rahman (piano) and Rowland Sutherland (flute).
Tickets are available online from www.whittingtonmusicfestival.littleboxoffice.com/ browse or on the door. As our Hon. Patron, the celebrated cellist Steven Isserlis CBE, says, “This year’s festival is characteristically imaginative, a judicious mix of beloved classics interspersed with the new.”
Come and hear world class music on your doorstep. You will be glad you did!
Shropshire teenager Oliver is turning his career aspirations into reality through his own dedication, and the opportunities and guidance provided at Derwen College’s Walford campus, near Shrewsbury. From honing his horticulture skills to stepping into the spotlight as a DJ, his journey highlights the impact of hard work and the right support.
Derwen College supports young adults with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), providing tailored opportunities to help them develop essential skills for work and independent living as part of their preparation for adulthood. Oliver’s story began in 2022 when he enrolled at Derwen College’s small day student campus in Walford, near Shrewsbury. There, he preferred the more intimate learning environment, and set himself a clear goal: to build towards a career in horticulture.
“I wanted to come to Derwen because it does gardening, and I wanted to learn how to use the machines,” he recalls. Initially nervous about not knowing anyone, Oliver quickly found his place. “It took me about a week to settle in. Once I got to know everyone, it was great.”
Over time, Oliver’s confidence
and skills flourished. He became proficient in using garden machinery, including mowers, leaf blowers, and power washers. His talents were put to practical use through external work placements designed to prepare him for employment. He has now progressed onto the College’s work-based supported internship programme. He tends the grounds at Shrewsbury Crematorium twice a week, works at Whittington Castle, near Oswestry, and helps maintain land at Oswestry’s Cambrian Heritage Railways. He also works with the grounds team at Alderford Lake, in Whitchurch.
Oliver’s ambitions don’t stop at horticulture. During his time at College, a passion for DJ-ing has grown. Having performed at numerous college parties, Oliver’s skills caught the attention of event organisers at Alderford Lake’s popular Alderfest. As a result, he has secured an exciting opportunity to DJ at Alderfest 2025 in July, an absolute dream come true for him!
“I would like to do gardening, maybe have my own company, and do discos as well,” he says, envisioning a future that blends both his passions.
Beyond work training, Oliver is
developing vital life skills to support him into adulthood. He is learning travel training, as well as cooking and independence skills. “I’m learning how to cook meals and keep things clean,” he says proudly.
His parents have seen a remarkable transformation. “Oliver has learnt how to use machinery safely; he now has his own petrol strimmer and lawnmower at home. He does our lawns and even helps some of the neighbours,” his mum shares.
They have noticed significant improvements in his maturity and social skills, during his time at College.
“He is turning into a young adult that we are very proud of. The future is looking so much better for Oliver!”
Oliver’s story illustrates why Derwen College is ‘a place of possibility’. Through bespoke timetables, hands-on learning and work placements, students like Oliver are equipped with the skills and confidence to build fulfilling futures. Whether tending gardens or spinning tracks at a festival, Oliver is proving that with the right support, dreams can become reality.
Find out more about how Derwen College supports 16-25 year olds with SEND to achieve their aspirations at www.derwen.ac.uk.
A lawyer working with families affected by the maternity scandal in Shropshire has been sharing her experiences with people dealing with similar incidents in other parts of the country.
Laura Weir, a partner at Lanyon Bowdler Solicitors who has helped dozens of the families failed by Shrewsbury and Telford Hospitals NHS Trust, said it was vital to share learning with lawyers who were dealing with similar issues in other parts of the country.
She was among the speakers at a national maternity conference which took place in Leicester recently, and said there were numerous reports of poor standards of care at a range of NHS Trusts.
“The aim of the conference was for clinical negligence lawyers to share experiences and knowledge to enable us to support our clients in the best way possible,” Laura said.
“It was important to me to share learning, especially as the audience contained solicitors representing Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust and the families impacted by the failings which are currently being investigated by Donna Ockenden there.
We are now considered as the experts in how to run cases after a maternity scandal and we want to share all we have learnt.
We continue to offer meetings via telephone and video and where necessary we are able to offer face to face appointments, please use our letterbox when dropping off documents.

This is a question I get asked a lot and as a CONFIDENCE coach I can honestly say that confidence is often the key attribute between success and failure.
When you are confident you take more risks, and this often leads to your goals happening. Risk taking is scary and can be difficult so having that inner confidence often makes all the difference. Self-confidence is a skill that can be learnt over time, and this really does set you up for success.
The best way to gain self-confidence, I believe, is to think of the 4 P’s:
PERSONAL GOALS - Know what you want and really delve into your own goal setting.
POSITIVITY AND KINDNESS – Be kind to you and others. I promise this comes round full circle when you do.
PUSH YOURSELF – Step out of your comfort zone and look to grow.
PATIENCE – If you are consistent with your selfconfidence, you WILL see a difference.
Confidence isn’t about being loud – it’s not arrogance but a quiet total trust in you and your skills. It’s knowing you can fail and that’s fine as most of our learning is done within failure. I talk to people all the time about how children try and fail every single day, and we encourage that within school, sport and activities but then as adults we are sad and disheartened if we fail at something new. Switch on the mindset that without trying you cannot succeed.
I recently had the honour of being the interviewer at Miss Manchester and the winner, Victoria Quinlan, entered last year and did not make it. She talked about how disappointed she felt, and worried others would see it as a failure, but she turned it round and asked plenty of questions to get feedback from the Judges, panels and organisers.
She came back this year feeling more confident and really showing her true character and low and behold won the title! She explained that had she given up last year and tried to shrink away (which she partly felt like doing), nothing would have been achieved. But in the year between she worked tirelessly to challenge self-confidence and growth into her journey. When
“ When she performed on stage, she was a ray of sunshine and looked happy and content – you could see the journey she had been on and how her own self-belief had gone up over the past year.”
she performed on stage, she was a ray of sunshine and looked happy and content – you could see the journey she had been on and how her own selfbelief had gone up over the past year.
My advice to you is – try new things, not all the challenges will be right and good BUT they may make you feel empowered and bring happiness. If you never try, you’ll never know!
You weren’t born to tiptoe through life, take up space, be bold and most importantly do it with confidence.

Spring is in the air, and with it comes the muchanticipated return of The Shropshire Distillery’s Limited Edition Apple & Honey Gin. A true celebration of the season, this year’s release is meticulously distilled with Hilltop Blossom Honey, bringing an added layer of refinement to this already exquisite gin.
Handcrafted in small batches, the Limited Edition Apple & Honey Gin is made using crisp apples, delicately complemented by rose and hibiscus. For 2025, the distillery has partnered with Hilltop Honey to craft a distinctive edition, incorporating their Hilltop Blossom Honey to further enhance the floral notes and add a smooth, golden richness. Juniper-led with a warm and fresh essence, this gin is a true embodiment of spring in every sip.
Emma and Gareth, Founders of The Shropshire Distillery, shared their excitement:
“Our Apple & Honey Gin has always been a seasonal favourite, and we’re thrilled to partner with Hilltop Honey this year to elevate it even further. Their blossom honey adds a smooth, golden richness that perfectly complements the crispness of the apples. We can’t wait for our community to experience this year’s release!”
Perfectly versatile, they recommend serving it over ice with a premium tonic, a fresh apple slice, and good company. For those looking to get creative, why not try it in a Bees Knees cocktail, mixing it with fresh lemon juice
and a touch of honey syrup for a zesty twist? Or shake up a Honey & Hibiscus Fizz, blending it with sparkling wine and a hint of elderflower for a floral, effervescent serve. Whether enjoyed in the first warm evenings of spring or as a refreshing take on classic cocktails, this limited edition gin is a must-try for gin enthusiasts and newcomers alike.
Located in Ellesmere, Shropshire, The Shropshire Distillery is an award-winning, family-run distillery known for its dedication to craftsmanship and innovation. Our core range includes handcrafted gins, vodka, and liqueurs, alongside limited edition releases throughout the year. Recognised as a Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice award winner for two years running, we are proud to be listed among the Top 50 Things to Do in Shropshire and ranked No.1 in Ellesmere.
In addition to our spirits, we offer distillery experiences, including gin tastings and our renowned ‘Make Your Own Gin’ school, providing an immersive way to explore the world of craft distilling.
Exciting things are on the horizon! We’re working on a new project that we can’t wait to share with you soon. Sign up to our community and follow us on social media to be the first to know.

This exciting new club started last year after the Head Coach, Sian Brennan-Todd moved to Shrewsbury from Sydney, Australia. Sian had been living in Sydney for the last 6 years and ran a successful club near Bondi Beach. Previous to that Sian had one of the UK’s biggest programmes in Essex with students from 3-25 years of age. Winning the National Cheerleading championships an impressive 5 years in a row and also having the first ever all boy Competitive cheerleading team, Sian is now looking forward to the new club in Shrewsbury.
Cheerleading is an excellent sport to take part in for both boys and girls, involving gymnastics, tumbling, stunting and dancing. Cheerleaders aim for the highest standard possible and are expected to show high levels of dedication and talent, sportsmanship and self-confidence.
Whilst you are cheerleading you can have so much fun being part of a team and exercising. Cheerleading, like any dance form, has set arm movements, set timings for routines, names for the stunt and jumps and most importantly set rules for performing all these.
Our hope is to provide a positive environment in the pursuit of excellence based on the values of pride, co-operation, commitment and dedication.
WE PRIDE OURSELVES IN WORKING WITH ALL AGES AND ABILITIES.
The club recently performed at the W100 and also at Theatre Severn and Shrewsbury Moves festival.

It’s everything a school should be...”
“How many neurons are there in my brain?”
“Has grandad forgotten my birthday?” asked Harry. “No” replied his Mum hesitantly, “He gave me £20 for you.” she continued opening her purse. Harry realised she was covering for grandad. He had noticed him forgetting a few things recently: nothing very serious but a bit odd all the same. Anyway, today was his birthday so they’d see each other later and that was good.
Time passed and Harry noticed a few more things about grandad. He lost his car keys that then turned up in a coat pocket. He forgot to pay one of his bills and that caused some problems for his Mum. Then he forgot to meet Harry from school one day. “Mum” started Harry “why does grandad keep forgetting things?” His Mother turned and paused, “So, you’ve noticed too?
I’m worried he might have dementia but he won’t go to the doctor. I think he’s frightened.”
Harry looked up dementia. The word came from those Romans again – “Demens” meant without your mind – no wonder grandad was frightened. It was an illness where your brain started going a bit wrong. There were almost a million people in the UK with it and it was becoming more common. He found out that you really needed a doctor to diagnose it as other things could mimic it. He also found out it was incurable but there were treatments that could help so the sooner it was diagnosed the better. He decided he wanted to help grandad.
started, and Harry was a bit worried he’d been rumbled so easily but grandad smiled and said, “why not?”. Harry had found loads of different tests on line. He’d also found out that doing them on your own was probably not a good idea but there was a short one called GPCOG that he thought might help. He found it on an Australian website – gpcog.com.au
Grandad did incredibly well but did get 1 answer wrong – and you needed them all right. It suggested he see the GP. Harry showed him the NHS website that explained all the good reasons to see a doctor: he agreed – a bit reluctantly but he did say yes.
Harry and grandad had sort of taken to on-line tests: they found one called the Think Brain Health that was helpful.
“How did you get grandad to agree to see a doctor?” asked his Mum. “I sort of tricked him into it – although I think he knew. Perhaps it’s harder to say no to a favourite grandchild,” Harry said with a laugh. “There is another list I got off the net from the Alzheimer’s website that grandad could fill in and it would help the GP – its called the Dementia checklist for the GP,” continued Harry. “Well done,” said his Mum, “very well done.”
Grandad met him from school – he was there! As they walked home Harry spotted his chance: “It’s brilliant when we walk home together – I missed it last time.” “Sorry” his grandad replied “sometimes I forget some things.” “Can we do a test of your memory when we get home – I bet I can find one on my phone,” said Harry. Grandad looked at him quizzically “you seem to have planned this” he
Grandad did see the GP. He was asked a lot of questions about his general health, the medicines he took, whether he was very depressed or anxious, about his hearing and his eyesight and then he had a lot of blood tests too. The GP said she was not sure of a diagnosis yet. Harry and grandad had sort of taken to on-line tests: they found one called the Think Brain health at www. alzheimersresearchuk.org that was helpful.
Grandad had an underactive thyroid – the blood tests found it. So, it wasn’t dementia after all. “But” said grandad “All the stuff I’ve learnt has made me more aware of looking after my brain - all 86 billion cells of it!” “You’re joking!” said Harry, “more than the stars in the milky way!”
There’s a Little Less Conversation at Ellesmere College these days with students getting a new live music stream up and running - with the first featuring an Elvis-themed House Singing Competition which has been seen by almost 700 people worldwide.
The musical extravaganza was made more widely available to a much larger audience through the new service, meaning music enthusiasts, friends and family with other commitments who were All Shook Up at the prospect of missing out could still enjoy the hugely successful event.
Tony Coupe, Director of Music, said the decision to stream the competition was taken as space was limited due to the number of students attending in the hall. It also allowed the youngsters to showcase the celebration of singing to families, former students and agents who couldn’t be there for the performance.
He said: “Our students have the skills and facilities to take on the streaming themselves and it was a logical option to open up the celebration of singing visually to a wider audience. Although it has a competitive element, which the houses embrace, it is mainly about engaging every student in Senior School in singing and working together as a team and it always produces some excellent performances.
“It brings together our four competitive houses to battle it out - this year’s theme was The Music of Elvis. All students from Years 9 to 13 take
part performing a Unison Song, a Part Song in harmony, and two verses from a Hymn. This year’s competition resulted in a tie between Woodard and Wakeman-Lambart houses.
“Woodard came first in the Hymn Category with Guide Me O Thou Great Redeemer and first in the Part-Song with Can’t Help Falling in Love. Wakeman-Lambart came first in the Unison Song with Jailhouse Rock, and although WakemanLambart were awarded the trophy, both houses did equally well and as such were awarded a joint first.
“Wakeman-Lambart’s contribution to the Hymn Category was Abide With Me and their Part Song was Suspicious Minds, while Talbot House entertained with The Wonder of You in the Unison section, Love Divine as their Hymn and Return to Sender as their Part Song.
“Meynell house performed Burning Love in the Unison Category, The Day Thou Gavest as their Hymn and In the Ghetto as their Part Song. A selection of our teachers performed four Elvis Songs while the adjudicators were deliberating their decision - which was a really difficult task following some high quality performances.
“We have had some terrific feedback on our decision to stream the event and it is clearly something we will be looking to do again in the future. A fantastic night was had by all and I am pleased to report that the students of Ellesmere College are in fine voice, maintaining the high standards set at the school.”
Herefordshire Ludlow and North Shropshire College’s (HLNSC’s) student recruitment process for 2025/2026 is now in full swing. It’s always an exciting time to meet fresh, new faces and welcome the next generation of students into the hustle and bustle of college life.
We often get asked the question, when is the best time to apply?
You can apply at any time, but we recommend that if you leave school this Summer and have not already submitted your college application, you make this a priority and get this to us as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.
Applications for our courses at North Shropshire College in Oswestry, Walford College near Shrewsbury and Ludlow Sixth Form College have been open since the Autumn term and our most popular courses are filling up very quickly!
Sending your application to us as soon as possible will mean that you can relax for the Summer, and it will surely be a weight off your mind to receive an email from us confirming your place for September.
Waiting to receive results from your mock exams before applying? No problem. It is just advised not to leave it too late into Year 11. It is already such a busy time with GCSEs fast approaching, and leaving your application to the last minute can make revising for your exams even more stressful.

When we think of summer holidays, our minds automatically envisage a sizzling sun and temperatures over 25°C. However, summer across Western Europe is becoming increasingly stifling – with 2023’s being the hottest on record. The result? Crowded beach areas and lots of hot and bothered – not to mention sweaty – tourists.
If you’re not a fan of heat, humidity and heaving crowds, but still want a change of scenery this summer, here are some ideas for a cooler summer holiday outside the UK.
Stockholm, Sweden
Vancouver, Canada
Sweden’s capital is notoriously chilly for much of the year, but come summer the city becomes a playground for outdoors enthusiasts. The long sunlight hours definitely help. In July the sun doesn’t set until 10:00 pm, so you’ll see locals picnicking, boating and partying into the night.
With temperatures hanging around the low 20s, the weather’s perfect for cycling. Then there’s the Stockholm archipelago to explore, a cluster of over 30,000 islands and islets, many of which are just a short ferry journey from the city centre.
Where else can you museum hop in the morning, hike in the mountains after lunch and be sailing by sundown? Vancouver’s harmonic blend of urban and rural make it one of the most liveable cities in the world.
To top it off, Vancouver is mostly mild and dry throughout the summer months. Hit the beach, explore Stanley Park’s forest trails and time your visit around festival season (between June and August) to soak up some of Canada’s biggest music and multicultural events.
Sitting in the shadow of the world’s most recognisable mountain, the Matterhorn, the town of Zermatt is renowned for being one of Europe’s most popular ski resorts in winter – although its appeal extends all year round.
Whether you’re hiking through meadows to the sound of cowbells or admiring the view from a cable car, Zermatt is the ultimate base for a summer adventure. Temperatures at this time of year rarely climb above 20°C, generally hovering at around 15°C.
If you’re looking for a blue-sky break without the extreme heat, Slovenia is a winner. This Balkan beauty’s mountains, caves and lakes keep the region cool in the summer.
One of its more famous bodies of water, Lake Bled, is a particularly popular spot. With its shimmering lake, pictureperfect church, medieval castle and some of the highest peaks of the Julian Alps, Bled draws everyone from honeymooners to backpackers, who come for the hiking, biking and water sports opportunities.
