Oswestry Life April 2025

Page 1

This year, Easter is Sunday 20 April. Did you know, the Easter Bunny apparently originated in Germany where eggs were only left for ‘good’ children. Traditions change but the bunny is still here and serves as a reminder of the spring season…as well as chocolate. For the families out there, we love the idea of an egg-rolling race with hard boiled eggs. Yes, it’s the one where you have to roll it along with your face. Great for a family friendly competition, although Dad’s – give the kids a chance! Check out our interiors pages for some more Easter inspiration. Happy Easter!

Milestone for Oswestry u3a

Oswestry u3a is proud to announce that it has reached a significant milestone, welcoming its 300th member into the group. This achievement marks continued growth and enthusiasm for lifelong learning and social engagement among retired and semi-retired people in the local community.

The u3a (University of the Third Age) is a nationwide movement that provides opportunities for people no longer in full-time employment to come together and continue their educational, social, and creative interests.

Oswestry u3a offers a wide range of interest groups covering topics such as history, languages, science, literature, art, walking, and music. Regular meetings and social events also provide members with the chance to make new friends and stay active in both mind and body.

Chair of Oswestry u3a, Steve Watts, says, “Reaching 300 members is a fantastic milestone for us. We welcome anyone who wants to explore new interests, meet like-minded people, and enjoy a rewarding social life.

New members are always welcome. Anyone interested in joining Oswestry u3a or learning more about its activities can visit oswestry.u3asite.uk

A celebratory St George’s Day lunch

It began a long time ago with a group of male friends in a pub, (The Docs in Selattyn), discussing Englishness. David Franklin, who was the organising Chairman said, “It seemed that St. David and St. Patrick, in particular, were widely remembered and celebrated and that St. George was not.” And so began the tradition of a Sunday lunch to celebrate St. George and all things English.

The venue, for many years, was the Wynnstay Hotel in Oswestry, owned at the time by Bill Woodward who was also a member of the committee, on the nearest Sunday to St George’s Day, which is 23 March. The lunch usually includes fascinating facts about St. George and a short quiz by member Martyn Bentley, setting the mood.

Sadly, long-standing committee member Professor Peter Starbuck, has recently passed away. Over the years Peter organised many impressive guest speakers through his connections. They included Lord Gowrie, Lady Sarah Biffen (widow of former local MP John Biffen), Montgomeryshire MP Glyn Davies, Rob McLoughlin (ITVs longest serving presenter of political programmes (1994-2015), Sir Anthony Cleaver, Dr Ian Robertson CMG, and Lt Colonel Carl Meyer MBChB FRCS MSc.

Last year, the lunch was moved to Oswestry Cricket Club. Red roses are worn in buttonholes and attendees have a traditional lunch, followed by the singing of the national anthem and Jerusalem, with all guests joining in.

In the words of Peter Starbuck, “What we are celebrating is a sense of what it means to be English. And to us, it means a civilised gathering with an understated patriotism.”

Teacher’s award-winning book launch

On Wednesday 2 April, poet, therapist and community advocate, Julie Leoni will be launching an already award-winning debut poetry collection, Farmotherlands. The event promises to be a heartwarming celebration of farming, community, nature, and the powerful connection between humans and the land, as Julie will be joined at the Holroyd Community Theatre by an incredible lineup of local voices, including Ian and Stef from Treflach Farm, Casha and Barbara from Babbinswood Farm, and Tom Adams, known locally as Tom the Apple Man. Together, they will share their experiences of sustainable farming, community building, and the profound impact of living in tune with the seasons. The evening will also feature live music from Vera Van Heeringen and Jock Tyldesley, who will perform their unique blend of Cajun and Appalachian folk tunes.

Tickets for the launch event are £18, which includes a signed copy of Farmotherlands and are available from the Booka Bookshop website. Please note that purchases from the farms, musicians, or bar are not included in the ticket price.

Emillie is running the London Marathon!

In 2017, Emillie Parsons-Hann’s grandad suffered a huge stroke (in which the doctors prepared her family for the worst and told them very few people survive a stroke like that.) Despite the odds he survived but he was left with extremely impaired use of the left side of his body. Emillie’s grandad went from being an active, independent, proud man – to dependent and limited overnight. Over the last seven years, he has suffered another two heart attacks and was recently declared clinically dead for over four minutes before being resuscitated.

Last year, her uncle also suffered a stroke at the age of 60. He went from playing the guitar, cracking jokes, and caring for others that needed help to being the person that

needed care himself. He now lives in an assisted living unit, has been left in a wheelchair for the rest of his life, has extremely limited use of his entire body, and suffers from incredibly impaired speech and memory.

“These strokes haven’t just affected my uncle and grandad— they’ve deeply impacted my entire family, who have had to witness and navigate the challenges that followed. The way that strokes can strip everything from a person in seconds is incredibly scary. I’m 20 years old and currently a student at the University of Warwick, and I want to take on a challenge that makes me truly grateful for my health and body – to push myself to my physical limits the way that they have both been,” Emillie explains.

“£2000 is my fundraising target and it would be incredible to get as close to that as possible. I will be trying to get some physical collection pots to put up round town when I am back from uni, and will be getting some posters up in windows if anyone would be so kind as to donate.

HRH The Duke of Edinburgh Visits

Oswestry

On 18 March, Oswestry was privileged to receive a visit from His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh. His visit was to see firsthand the important work carried out by local charities OsNosh, The Derwen and The New Saints FC Foundation and The New Saints Football Club.

OsNosh CIC has been a key part of the Oswestry community for the past six years. Based at The Centre in Oswestry, their community kitchen and café takes surplus food and turns it into delicious, nutritious ‘pay as you feel’ meals. Their dedicated volunteers collect good food from local stores and suppliers that would otherwise have gone to waste and then share it with the local community.

As His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh arrived at OsNosh, 50 regular volunteers, including supporters from local organisations and students from St Martins school, were there to enjoy a special buffet lunch prepared by founder Ben Wilson. “With help from some of our regular volunteers, and students from the school, we’ve taken surplus food collected this week and turned it into a global feast fit for a Prince!” Ben said.

The team at OsNosh believe everyone has the right to good food, as well as the knowledge and skills required to feed themselves well, for less money with care for the environment. OsNosh deliver a range of educational programmes with local schools and housing associations, and work closely with

other local charities like Qube, TNS Football Foundation and Oswestry & Borders Foodbank.

During the Duke’s visit, he was shown how OsNosh collect surplus and turn it into fabulous hot meals for the local community. He joined students from St Martins school in a masterclass from Ben who demonstrated the art of making food look good on a plate.

The Duke met directors and staff of The New Saints FC Foundation, before undertaking a tour of the Foundation and football club marketplace, comprised of stalls presenting the Foundation and the club’s work within the community. There was then an on-pitch demonstration, where His Royal Highness observed different groups taking part in activities.

The New Saints FC Foundation is a registered charity established in October 2013, with a focus on using the positive influences and opportunities offered by the ethos, staff and resources of The New

Saints Football Club to promote participation in community-based diversionary, fun, single or multisport activities.

Students from the Marches Academy, as well as players from The New Saints FC’s Academy and Scholarship programme, occupied half of the pitch, while The New Saints FC men’s first team – who this season became the first Welsh domestic club to qualify for the league phase of the UEFA Conference League – demonstrated training activity on the other.

Foundation Manager Gill Jones said, “We are honoured to have hosted His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh at Park Hall Stadium this afternoon. The visit is a proud moment for The New Saints FC Foundation and The New Saints Football Club, and we were delighted to have the opportunity to showcase the important work that we do within the community.”

and supporters extended a warm welcome to His Royal Highness, showing him the college’s unique ‘Marketplace’ and Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Outdoor Centre.

His Royal Highness toured the dedicated Outdoor Centre, where students proudly showcased their skills they have learned as part of their Duke of Edinburgh’s Award programme, then watched on as students, with a wide range of special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), working towards their Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards, demonstrated activities.

Marking the occasion, a celebratory lunch was held in The Orangery Restaurant, attended by special guests including His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Shropshire, Anna Turner; Shropshire High Sheriff, Brian Welti, Oswestry Deputy Mayor Councillor Rosie Radford and Shropshire Council Chairman, Councillor Vince Hunt.

This visit marks a significant moment in Derwen College’s history, being the first royal visit since 1994, when the College’s patron, The Duchess of Kent, last attended.

Derwen College Principal and CEO, Meryl Green, said, “Receiving a visit from His Royal Highness was a huge honour for the whole college. We were particularly proud to showcase our fully accessible Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Outdoor Centre, which has been developed over the 10 years the college has been running the Award and ensures young people with disabilities don’t miss out on the fabulous opportunities the scheme offers.

“It was also wonderful to be able

to show His Royal Highness our unique Marketplace, which is open to the public, and to demonstrate the exceptional real-life training opportunities this provides to our students in order to prepare them for the world of work.”

in Beatrice Street

Beatrice Street has seen so many changes through the years, yet parts of it remain as they were. Looking back at old photos on the Internet, the view is the same, some buildings still stand, and the same road walked and driven down by thousands of people are a solid part of Oswestry’s history.

According to ‘Hidden Oswestry’, Oswestry was once a walled town, and one of its key entrances was the Beatrice Gate. This gate was constructed during the reign of King Henry IV (1399-1413) and was likely named after his wife, Queen Beatrice. It served as a significant access point to the town, marking the area that would evolve into Beatrice Street.

As time marched on, Beatrice Street became a bustling hub of activity, reflecting the town’s growth. By the 18th century, it was lined with buildings. For instance, numbers 12 and 14 Beatrice Street are recorded as a house from 1744, later being converted into two shops and now home to local business, Coversure.

Another unmistakable building on the street that you just can’t miss, is what was The Fighting Cocks Inn. Covering numbers 13 and 15 Beatrice Street, we now know it as shops housing Forever After Bridal and Salon XV. Now, it’s a solid shopping area of just under half a mile offering hair, beauty, gifts, food, furniture, insurance, bridal, print services, tattoos and more.

Handmade and Pre-loved Guitars in Oswestry

If you’re a musician or looking for your next guitar, there’s a specialist in town you need to know about.

Music lovers and guitar enthusiasts have a new reason to celebrate: Velozo Guitars, the brainchild of Brazilian luthier Alessandro Velozo, has officially set up shop in Oswestry. Offering bespoke handmade electric guitars, expert repairs, and a selection of pre-loved instruments and accessories, Velozo Guitars is a must-visit for musicians in and around Oswestry.

Alessandro Velozo’s journey to Oswestry is as fascinating as the guitars he builds. Originally from São Paulo, Brazil, he first perfected his craft as a luthier in his late teens, developing an expertise that would take him across continents. After establishing successful workshops in both São Paulo and Lisbon, he made the move to the UK, setting up his first Oswestry workshop before relocating to a larger space in April 2024 to accommodate his growing business.

With decades of experience and a dedication to quality, Alessandro specialises in custom electric guitars, blending traditional craftsmanship with a modern twist. Whether it’s a completely bespoke design or a finely tuned recreation of a classic model, his instruments are entirely unique.

While custom electric guitars are at the heart of Velozo Guitars, the shop offers much more. Guitarists looking for expert repairs and servicing will find Alessandro’s attention to detail and understanding of tone and playability invaluable. Whether it’s a simple restring or a complex repair, each job is handled with precision and care.

For those in search of a new instrument, Velozo Guitars also stocks a range of pre-loved electric and acoustic guitars, alongside amplifiers, effects pedals, and other accessories. Each item is carefully inspected and tested, ensuring that customers get the best possible value for their money. Whether you’re a seasoned musician or a beginner looking for your first guitar, there’s something for everyone in the store.

For a business with international roots, setting up shop in Oswestry might seem like an unexpected choice. But for Alessandro, it was the perfect fit. The town’s welcoming community, growing creative scene, and its

proximity to both local and touring musicians made it an ideal location to expand his business.

With a focus on quality craftsmanship and customer service, Velozo Guitars is bringing something unique to Oswestry’s music scene. Alessandro’s commitment to his work and passion for helping musicians find their perfect sound is already earning the business a loyal customer base.

If you’re a musician in Oswestry or the surrounding areas, Velozo Guitars should be on your radar. If you’re in need of a repair, searching for a unique pre-loved instrument, or dreaming of a custom-built electric guitar, Alessandro’s expertise and dedication ensure you’re in good hands.

Visit www.velozoguitars.com for more information or email info@velozoguitars.com.

Better yet, drop by the shop, meet Alessandro, and experience first-hand the craftsmanship and passion that make Velozo Guitars a standout addition to Oswestry’s small business scene.

A VIEW FROM THE GUILDHALL

As this civic year closes, the Town Council would like to thank everyone who has welcomed The Mayor over the last 12 months. Being the Mayor of Oswestry is a privilege and an opportunity to find out about, and support amazing people doing amazing things, for and with the community – it’s the same for every Mayor. It’s been a very busy 12 months for the Council with a number of highlights, Mayors are often asked to pick one but find this an impossible question because they get to see so much. Being the Mayor gives you a real insight into what makes our community tick, that said our mayors always say that being part of the Derwen College’s celebration is particularly special.

The Mayor and Town Clerk recently represented the Council at the NALC Star Council awards, we were a finalist in the Council of the Year category and were pleased to have our work recognised. Whilst the citation of our nomination focused on our work with young people, the Council is particularly proud of the leadership we have shown on the high street with many shop fronts renovated, alleyways improved and the purchase of Llwyd Mansion. Whilst they say people only remember the winners, we feel our shortlisting reflects the work of many in the community and our work with partners.

We are heading into an election (1 May), and this is the opportunity for people to put themselves forward for election to the council.

Becoming a councillor is a hugely rewarding and humbling experience, you have the opportunity to support the town and community and make decisions on their behalf and be accountable to them.  There aren’t many roles where you get the opportunity to support the wider community in this way, if you want further details check out our website.

Finally, we would like to thank the team from Oswestry Life for all their work in promoting all things Oswestry and for supporting and highlighting big local issues that impact people.

ENVIRONMENTAL ALLERGIES, SYMPTOMS AND RELIEF

Our pets can be exposed to environmental allergens throughout the year, both inside and outside their home, causing symptoms such as scratching, licking, and paw biting, sneezing and runny eyes.

Environmental Allergies

These allergies are often from contact with or from inhaling allergens e.g. dust, mold, air freshners, pollen, or other particles.

Flea allergy dermatitis is another common cause of skin allergies, when your dog gets an allergic skin reaction to flea saliva. Affected areas are usually around the base of the tail, appearing as red or scabby skin. Check regularly for fleas and flea dirt on your dog.

Pet Allergy Treatments

Allergies are difficult to treat. Try to identify what’s triggering your dog’s allergies so you can avoid/remove that trigger. Conventional allergy treatments include:

• Oral or injectable allergy medicines that suppress your dog’s immune reaction. These only control the symptoms.

• Steroids – often given short term to control your dog’s symptoms. Steroids shouldn’t be given long term.

• Frequent bathing – often with medicated shampoos that temporarily suppress your dog’s reaction.

NB. APOQUEL is not recommended as it is an IMMUNE SUPPRESSANT, leaving your pet vulnerable to other diseases, condtions and infections!

Oswestry Life Podcast Brings Local Joy to Your Ears

April marks the launch of Oswestry Life’s first podcast, a celebration of the town’s uplifting stories and positive community spirit. This new audio venture promises to capture the essence of Oswestry, delivering heartwarming content directly to listeners.

The debut series, comprising three episodes, embraces the theme of spring. Listeners can look forward to insightful discussions on health and wellbeing, the awakening of nature, and the exciting new developments shaping the town.

Plus, the podcast team took to the streets in February, capturing authentic voices and spontaneous reflections from Oswestrians, asking them what puts a spring in their step.

As we leave winter behind, one episode features local health experts offering practical advice on revitalising after the colder months. Another episode delves into the

natural world, with farmers and gardeners sharing their knowledge of the blossoming flora and fauna. A final episode spotlights the town’s fresh initiatives and businesses.

As if that wasn’t enough, the podcast will feature interviews with the deserving winners of the recent Oswestry Local Hero Awards, showcasing the remarkable contributions of community champions.

Ruth Martin of Martin & Jones Marketing, a member of the podcast team remarked,

“Despite a dreary February day, the enthusiasm we encountered was overwhelming. People were eager to share their experiences and what they love about Oswestry. It was truly inspiring.”

David Lee-Birch, co-owner of Oswestry Life magazine added, “We’re privileged to hear so many incredible stories, but magazine space is

limited. The podcast allows us to amplify these voices and share even more good news.”

Oswestry Life magazine has partnered with seasoned podcast producer Charlotte Foster, whose BBC background and local podcast expertise brings invaluable experience to the project. “Podcasts are a powerful medium for capturing a town’s personality,” Foster explained. “The real magic lies in hearing directly from the people. There are countless remarkable stories waiting to be told.”

The first series is generously sponsored by Kim Cleminson-Jones at KC Accountancy Services. Kim expressed, “I immediately wanted to support this project. We need more positive stories, and I want to share my pride in Oswestry with everyone.”

The Oswestry Life Podcast team is already planning their next series, scheduled for release in the summer. They encourage anyone with a positive Oswestry story to get in touch, or businesses interested in sponsorship opportunities.

Stay tuned to their social media channels for listening links and updates!

OF THE MONTH

APRIL 2025 Clem Fatale Has Been Betrayed

A group of old college friends get together before two of them get married.  Along comes Forbes, their mysterious friend who was expelled and then disappeared for years.  He brings a party game where the players get wired up to a strange device that swaps their bodies. The friends then have to identify who is in whose body, but not everyone tells the truth, and some realise that this is the perfect opportunity to revisit old romances, unearth some secrets and settle a few scores.

Like a film version of ‘Inside No. 9’, this one just about limps over the line but shows real originality and verve on the way. Now, who’s who again?

Whittington Music Festival Returns

Whittington Music Festival is going from strength to strength and has a sound reputation for musical excellence. In both 2023 and 2024 concerts were sold out. Thanks to the support of local businesses including Oswestry School and Perspective Northwest, and a growing number of loyal sponsors, the festival is on a firm footing. This year the festival has also been fortunate to secure a grant from Oswestry Rotary Club’s Mary Hignett Bequest Fund towards our outreach work with schools and Derwen College, and from the Walker Trust based in Shrewsbury.

This year, several artists are returning to Whittington, including star violinist Braimah Kanneh-Mason, international tenor Mark Padmore and award-winning jazz pianist Zoe Rahman. And for the first time we have our own string quartet – the Whittington Quartet – who will perform Schubert’s glorious Death and the Maiden Quartet D810 during the evening concert on Saturday 17 May.

The festival opens on Thursday 15 May at 7.30pm with piano quartets by Mozart and Brahms and will close on Sunday 18 May at 3.00pm with a trio of sextets by Strauss, Brahms and Schoenberg (his Op.4). On Saturday morning from 10.00am at Whittington Church, talented

local teenagers will be coached by festival musicians (admission free) followed at 2pm by a Family Concert including the quintet ‘Night Music from the Streets of Madrid’ by Boccherini, and after that, Jazz in the Afternoon with Zoe Rahman (piano) and Rowland Sutherland (flute).

Tickets are available online from www.whittingtonmusicfestival.littleboxoffice.com/ browse or on the door. As our Hon. Patron, the celebrated cellist Steven Isserlis CBE, says, “This year’s festival is characteristically imaginative, a judicious mix of beloved classics interspersed with the new.”

Come and hear world class music on your doorstep. You will be glad you did!

• 1 sheet ready-rolled shortcrust pastry (rolled to 3mm/1/8in thick)

Recipe created by South African celebrity chef Reuben Riffel with South African stone fruits, photography © Costas Millas. For more recipe inspiration, visit www.southafricanfruit.co.uk.

method

1. Line a baking tray with a sheet of greaseproof paper. Using a 16-18cm saucer or ring mould, draw a circular outline on the paper.

2. Drizzle the honey inside the circle and then sprinkle with lavender, if using.

3. Arrange the nectarine slices on top of the honey, allowing them to overlap slightly.

4. Sprinkle the toasted flaked almonds over the nectarines.

5. Cut out a 20cm diameter circle from the rolled-out shortcrust pastry. Brush one side of the pastry with raspberry jam and place that side over the nectarines.

6. Tuck the pastry nicely around and over the nectarines, and press the edges down slightly with a fork.

7. Transfer the baking tray and tart to the fridge to chill for 30 minutes. Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 180°C, fan 160°C, gas 4.

8. Bake the tart in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes.

9. Remove from the oven and cool slightly. Carefully turn the tart onto a plate and serve with vanilla ice cream and an extra sprinkling of toasted flaked almonds.

The Shropshire Distillery Unveils This Year’s Limited Edition Apple & Honey Gin, Crafted with Hilltop Blossom Honey

A Springtime Delight Not to Be Missed

Spring is in the air, and with it comes the muchanticipated return of The Shropshire Distillery’s Limited Edition Apple & Honey Gin. A true celebration of the season, this year’s release is meticulously distilled with Hilltop Blossom Honey, bringing an added layer of refinement to this already exquisite gin.

Handcrafted in small batches, the Limited Edition Apple & Honey Gin is made using crisp apples, delicately complemented by rose and hibiscus. For 2025, the distillery has partnered with Hilltop Honey to craft a distinctive edition, incorporating their Hilltop Blossom Honey to further enhance the floral notes and add a smooth, golden richness. Juniper-led with a warm and fresh essence, this gin is a true embodiment of spring in every sip.

Emma and Gareth, Founders of The Shropshire Distillery, shared their excitement:

“Our Apple & Honey Gin has always been a seasonal favourite, and we’re thrilled to partner with Hilltop Honey this year to elevate it even further. Their blossom honey adds a smooth, golden richness that perfectly complements the crispness of the apples. We can’t wait for our community to experience this year’s release!”

Perfectly versatile, they recommend serving it over ice with a premium tonic, a fresh apple slice, and good company. For those looking to get creative, why not try it in a Bees Knees cocktail, mixing it with fresh lemon juice

and a touch of honey syrup for a zesty twist? Or shake up a Honey & Hibiscus Fizz, blending it with sparkling wine and a hint of elderflower for a floral, effervescent serve. Whether enjoyed in the first warm evenings of spring or as a refreshing take on classic cocktails, this limited edition gin is a must-try for gin enthusiasts and newcomers alike.

Ellesmere College students decide It’s Now or Never for Elvis-themed streaming event

There’s a Little Less Conversation at Ellesmere College these days with students getting a new live music stream up and running - with the first featuring an Elvis-themed House Singing Competition which has been seen by almost 700 people worldwide.

The musical extravaganza was made more widely available to a much larger audience through the new service, meaning music enthusiasts, friends and family with other commitments who were All Shook Up at the prospect of missing out could still enjoy the hugely successful event.

Tony Coupe, Director of Music, said the decision to stream the competition was taken as space was limited due to the number of students attending in the hall. It also allowed the youngsters to showcase the celebration of singing to families, former students and agents who couldn’t be there for the performance.

He said: “Our students have the skills and facilities to take on

the streaming themselves and it was a logical option to open up the celebration of singing visually to a wider audience. Although it has a competitive element, which the houses embrace, it is mainly about engaging every student in Senior School in singing and working together as a team and it always produces some excellent performances.

“It brings together our four competitive houses to battle it out - this year’s theme was The Music of Elvis. All students from Years 9 to 13 take part performing a Unison Song, a Part Song in harmony, and two verses from a Hymn. This year’s competition resulted in a tie between Woodard and Wakeman-Lambart houses.

“Woodard came first in the Hymn Category with Guide Me O Thou Great Redeemer and first in the PartSong with Can’t Help Falling in Love. Wakeman-Lambart came first in the Unison Song with Jailhouse Rock, and although Wakeman-Lambart were awarded the trophy, both

houses did equally well and as such were awarded a joint first.

“Wakeman-Lambart’s contribution to the Hymn Category was Abide With Me and their Part Song was Suspicious Minds, while Talbot House entertained with The Wonder of You in the Unison section, Love Divine as their Hymn and Return to Sender as their Part Song.

“Meynell house performed Burning Love in the Unison Category, The Day Thou Gavest as their Hymn and In the Ghetto as their Part Song. A selection of our teachers performed four Elvis Songs while the adjudicators were deliberating their decision - which was a really difficult task following some high quality performances.

“We have had some terrific feedback on our decision to stream the event and it is clearly something we will be looking to do again in the future. A fantastic night was had by all and I am pleased to report that the students of Ellesmere College are in fine voice, maintaining the high standards set at the school.”

Coach House Fitness Launches Transformational Bootcamps

Since opening their doors just over two years ago, Rad Danailov and his team at Coach House Fitness have worked tirelessly to expand their offerings and create a thriving fitness community. From introducing a state-of-the-art fitness studio, running more than twenty-five live and virtual classes each week, to expanding the gym floor and diversifying equipment, the towncentre gym has gone from strength to strength. Now, as they celebrate their second anniversary, they are launching an exciting new initiative: Coach House Fitness Bootcamps.

“This is just the beginning,” says gym owner Rad. “We are incredibly excited to be launching bootcamps as a new brand within Coach House Fitness. This will be the first of many, and we are confident that our team’s expertise in fitness, nutrition and motivation will provide real results for every participant.”

The six-week pre-summer bootcamp, running from 28 April to 8 June, is designed for anyone looking to lose weight, get leaner and get fitter. Open to both gym members and non-members of all ability levels, it consists of three high-energy outdoor sessions per week (Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday at 6pm), ensuring participants receive expert coaching and the benefits of group motivation. And for those inevitable rainy days, an indoor option is

available to keep training on track. What sets Coach House Fitness Bootcamps apart is the comprehensive approach to health and fitness. Participants won’t just be attending group workouts; they will be following a structured programme that supports their entire fitness journey. The bootcamp kicks off with a group consultation, where participants set personal goals and receive expert guidance. To ensure real progress is tracked, before and after body composition testing is included, allowing participants to see tangible results. Nutrition is also a key element, with personalised macro calculations and nutritional advice provided to help fuel the body correctly for optimum performance. Additionally, 24/7 support and accountability via email advice and a dedicated group chat will keep participants motivated every step of the way.

Coach House Fitness Bootcamps will be led by Rad, who brings more than a decade of experience in the fitness industry, joined by Liam Grasier and Callum Woodcock, fitness instructors and personal trainers who will each bring their own expertise in cardio, strength training and nutrition. Bootcamps have surged in popularity across the UK in recent years due to their dynamic, resultsdriven approach to fitness. They offer a high-energy, time-efficient way to

train in a motivating group setting. Coach House Fitness Bootcamps aim to embrace this winning formula to ensure participants achieve their fitness goals effectively.

The launch of the bootcamps brand comes at a time of remarkable success for Coach House Fitness. Since the gym’s relaunch under new ownership, membership numbers have soared, and the gym has earned prestigious recognition. In 2024 it proudly won the Oswestry Life Award for Customer Satisfaction and Diversification and was shortlisted for Newcomer of the Year at the National Fitness Awards. However, Rad and his team refuse to rest on their laurels. “We are always looking for ways to improve the service we provide for our members,” says Rad. “Fitness is constantly evolving, and

The six-week presummer bootcamp, running from 28 April to 8 June, is designed for anyone looking to lose weight, get leaner and get fitter. Open to both gym members and non-members of all ability levels.

so are we. We want to continue building an inclusive environment where people feel supported and empowered to reach their goals.”

With limited spaces available and high interest already, now is the time to sign up. Those keen to take part can register online at coachhousefitness.net or contact info@coachhousefitness.net for more details.

With a thriving community, a reputation for excellence and now the addition of a game-changing bootcamp, the future is looking stronger than ever for Coach House Fitness. Whether you’re a seasoned gym-goer or just beginning your fitness journey, this could be the perfect opportunity to take things to the next level.

“No winter lasts forever, no spring skips its turn”

Did you feel spring would never come this year? Well, the daffodils are out and hopefully the sun will shine a bit more. But will any of this weather actually affect your health? Many of my patients told me how the cold made their joints ache and certainly there are more heart attacks, strokes, depression, pneumonia and even more household accidents in the cold weather. I often thought we evolved to be living in a nice warm climate but we all ended up living in Britain with its cold, wet, dark winters!

But, is any of this significant to our health? Many studies have been done that show some effects are real: high atmospheric pressure does increase pain and asthma admissions to hospital. Menstrual pains are worse in cold weather which might explain why heat can help. Headaches are affected by pressure too. Research has shown that nerve endings are sensitive to cold. Humidity also affects joint pains and the immune system. Light levels have an effect

on mood. Less sun means less vitamin D in the winter and this also affects immune function.

We all know we catch more bugs in winter and recent research suggests why this happens. Our noses produce what are called extracellular vesicles (EVs not ETs!) in response to viruses. These fight the infection in the nasal passages. Cold, dry air reduces the EVs dramatically.

So, what can you do to make next winter healthier? Keep active, keep warm and try not to spend too much time in a dry atmosphere. Avoid people with bugs! Easier said than done! Consider taking vitamin D supplements. Wash your hands regularly. Have the relevant immunisations and try to keep an interest in life to avoid low mood. If you do suffer from seasonal affective disorder, consider a light box.

Here’s to a nice, long, warm, humid, sunny, high pressure and healthy summer. Anon

Spring CleaningA Catalyst for Change

April is around the corner, the equinox has passed, and we are now officially into spring and in spring, apparently, we clean!

Spring cleaning our home, whether the whole space or one or two areas, clears away the dust and stagnant energy of winter. Sort out what you’re still using and what you’re not, clean the space and replace only those things that are still useful. Store, donate, sell, swap, share with friends the other things.

“What you think, you become” - Buddha

Spring cleaning can also extend to our mind, by taking note of our thoughts and beliefs. What are the things that you say on repeat? “Miserable day isn’t it.” “I’m tired.” “I can’t afford it”. The things we say are our thoughts and beliefs but verbalized. Change what you say, and you’ll start to change your beliefs and your life.

Is the day miserable or is the weather simply overcast? Are you tired or are you bored? Can you not afford it or is your money prioritised elsewhere?

With this in mind, consider spring cleaning your habits too. If you know that rushing makes you feel anxious, annoyed and short-tempered, what can you do to set yourself up for greatness in advance, so that you don’t need to rush? Could you prep your breakfast and lunch the evening before? Decide what you’re going to wear and put it out ready before bed, so you don’t have to think about it in the morning? Could you go to bed 30 minutes earlier and wake up 30 minutes earlier? Would having 20 minutes of peace to yourself in the morning before everyone else is up put you in a calmer mood for the day?

Take a few minutes to reflect on your environment, your mindset and your habits. Consider what’s working for you and what isn’t. Clear away what isn’t and make space for new. Happy spring cleaning!

New routes to qualifying as a solicitor

The route into the legal profession has changed in recent years, with more options than ever before to qualify as a solicitor - whether you want to go to university or not.

Lanyon Bowdler, which has offices in Oswestry, across Shropshire and North Wales, has a long tradition of not only training the next generation of solicitors but giving them the opportunity to grow their careers within the firm.

In a new episode of the firm’s Legal Lounge podcast, managing partner, Brian Evans, explains how things have changed, with learning and development manager, Emma Harrison, outlining how people can qualify as a solicitor without going to university.

Brian says, “The process used to be very simple - you’d go off to do a law degree, followed by a Legal Practice Course, known as the LPC, and then look for a twoyear training contract.

“Or the alternative if you did a non-law degree was to take the graduate diploma in law, then the Legal Practice Course before applying for a two-year training contract. But things are quite different now for our next generation of solicitors.

“The main difference is the introduction of the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) which replaces the Legal Practice Course.

“The SQE is designed to standardise the qualification, as there used to be some variety between what the LPC covered depending on which institution you went to, whereas now everyone will have done the

However,

university is not for everyone, and young people are increasingly worried about the level of debt that comes with studying for a degree, so an undergraduate apprenticeship is a great route into law without the need for university.

same exam and have the same basic knowledge when they join the profession.”

So, let’s look at a student who has just completed their A-Levels - what options are available to them?

“The first option, which is closest to the ‘traditional’ route, is to do a law degree at university, following which you can apply to law firms for work placements where you would work as a paralegal before taking the SQE and qualifying as a solicitor,” Brian says.

“If you choose to study something

other than law, you can still do a graduate diploma or SQE preparation course and qualify that way, but it is worth noting that it can be quite difficult to get post-graduate funding for the SQE.”

Emma adds, “Another route which avoids the potential funding difficulties is a graduate apprenticeship, which includes working within a law firm while you prepare for the SQE.

“However, university is not for everyone, and young people are increasingly worried about the level of debt that comes with studying for a degree, so an undergraduate apprenticeship is a great route into law without the need for university.

“We offer a paralegal apprenticeship, which is a twoand-a-half-year qualification as a paralegal. It’s a great landing point which can lead to a longform solicitor apprenticeship over the next three years - meaning you work towards your SQE qualification without having to find the funding yourself.”

To listen to the podcast in full, which is released on 17 March, search for The Legal Lounge on your usual podcast provider or visit www.lblaw.co.uk/knowledge.

8 Tips for a truly comfy bedroom

How do you make the room where you sleep into a cosy and tranquil haven?

1Sleep on a supportive mattress

Pocket sprung mattresses, with springs in calico pockets, are evenly supportive and breathable. If you prefer foam, look for multiple layers, with a top layer of at least 5cm. Perhaps the ultimate solution is a combination mattress, offering springs plus a comfortable, non-sprung top layer.

2Snuggle up in a superb duvet

You’ll want a duvet that’s warm in winter and cool in summer. A tog of 8 to 10.5 is recommended for year-round use. The perfect combination is two button-together duvets, one heavier than the other, which can be used together or separately depending on the time of year. Choose a natural filling for softness and breathability, or a synthetic filling if you have allergies.

3Aim for pillow perfection

Options include down, feather, wool, latex, memory foam, synthetic down and hybrid, plus specialist cooling, anti-snoring and sleep apnoea pillows. Polyester pillows are lightweight, easy to launder and inexpensive. Feather pillows last longer and have natural breathability. All pillows should be replaced every two or three years.

4Go for

gorgeous bedlinens

The best fabric is the one that feels right for you. Linen and hemp have excellent breathability, a cool, crisp touch and soften as they age. Silk keeps you warm in winter and cool in summer, and may help

with allergies. Bamboo and eucalyptus offer similar benefits. Cotton is soft, natural, breathable and affordable. Look for quality yarn and a thread count of 200.

5Banish unwanted light

Floaty curtains are pretty, but early-morning light can be disturbing. Blackout blinds or curtains could ensure you get that much-needed shut-eye, or simply buy an eye mask.

6Block out noise

If noise from next door is a problem, try moving your bed or placing your wardrobe against the shared wall. If it’s coming from outside, consider thick, heavy curtains. Try earplugs or play soft, natural sounds such as waves or rustling leaves, or white, pink or brown noise.

7Sniff out the right scents

According to the Sleep Foundation, research has associated lavender with improved sleep, or experiment with rose, chamomile, jasmine, ylang ylang, vanilla and sandalwood. Use a reed or electric diffuser, or try a pillow spray.

8Find the right temperature

Experts recommend a temperature between 15.5 and 20°C for sleep, with 18.3°C being the optimum. In summer, keep the curtains closed when the sun is pouring in, and invest in a fan if you need more cooling air circulation.

Gardening

Over 70 Glorious Gardens to Visit Nearby

The National Garden Scheme have over 70 gardens in Powys opening this year, of which 19 will be open by arrangement. From the stunning 7-acre gardens at The Grove, Presteigne (LD8 2NS) with its arboretum and riverside walks, to the hidden and quirky town garden at 1 Church Bank in Welshpool (SY21 7DR), we have gardens to suit everyone.

Closer to Oswestry, Eve’s Garden near Llansantffraid (SY22 6TB), is filled with colour and scents from its magnificent borders and abundant roses. New to the NGS are The Old Pottery, also Llansantffraid (SY22 6UA) and Glan Yr Afon, Llangedwyn (SY10 9LQ), both of which have extensive plantings and plenty of surprises.

A trip out to Montgomery is always a delight, with its old-fashioned charm and acclaimed local shops. Nearby is Cuckoo Hall, Abermule (SY15 6DL) offering 1.5 acres with ponds and a meandering stream. Abermule is also home to Rock Mill (SY15 6NN), opening in May. This magical three-acre award-winning riverside garden is in a beautiful, wooded valley and has much to explore.

All these gardens can be found online at www.ngs.org. uk with the owner’s contact details, opening dates, and admission rates. Ideal for larger groups such as Garden

Clubs, WI trips and other social organisations, these gardens can also be booked by smaller groups for private get-togethers and celebrations. Instead of booking a large, often expensive hotel for a family celebration, why not contact one of our garden owners? In most cases, tea and homemade cake is on offer, or you may prefer to organise your own party food and liaise with the owner. Whatever the occasion, we look forward to welcoming you to one of our glorious private gardens very soon!

April in the garden

I love April. That extra warmth and daylight means the garden really springs to life. February and March tease, but April brings all the bright foliage and the abundant blossom. By now you’ll know my special love are acers. Their unfurling delicate leaves especially beautiful after a compulsory April shower.

Sowing times is a bit of an art, so get some of the hardier vegetable seed sown outside now. Things like beetroot, parsnip, leeks, and carrots can now be sown in a prepared bed. More delicate types should be sown indoors and allowed to grow to a reasonable size before planting in the garden or unheated greenhouse later next month when frost risk has passed. Transplanting established plants will give earlier crops and minimise pest damage. I sow broad beans direct and indoors to get a good length of cropping time.

When it comes to flowers, sometimes it’s better to buy plug plants rather than growing from seed. I especially find the staple lobelia, alyssum and geranium for my hanging baskets take too long to get to a reasonable size. I’ll plant the baskets up in May and get them established before hardening off.

I haven’t mentioned weeding yet, but it’s so important

to keep on top of it at this time of year. I vote the humble hoe as tool of the month for April!

We’re putting the finishing touches to Oswestry In Bloom’s competition right now and we’ll be announcing the closing dates for the applications soon. It’s a very important summer for Oswestry and our volunteers, not only are we competing in the Heart of England competition, but we are the region’s representative large town in the national Britain In Bloom.

It would be great if you could think of us when you’re sowing seeds or splitting perennials. Any donations of plants would be gratefully received for our flower displays, stall and plant swap tables. You can contact me on grum.oswestry@gmail.com.

RETIREMENT PLANNING MADE EASY

IS YOUR PENSION ON TRACK?

Whether retirement is just around the corner or still some years away, understanding your pension savings is an essential step in making sure that you can enjoy the lifestyle you want in later years.

Here, Craig Roberts, independent financial adviser at Belgrave Wincham, shares some practical tips to help you check your pension is on track.

Picture your perfect retirement

A good starting point is envisaging the life that you’d like when you retire.

Are you planning to travel the world? Will you be spending lots of quality time with family? Or maybe you want to take up that long-forgotten hobby?

Understanding your goals in advance will help determine how much income you’ll need.

For most people, the Pensions and Lifetime Savings Association estimate this to be around £14,400 to £43,100 per year, but everyone’s situation is different so it’s important to get a clear sense of what will support your plans.

Know where you stand

Next, it’s time to gather your pension statements together and review where you stand.

Be sure to include workplace pensions from previous jobs, your State Pension forecast, and any other income sources you may have too.

If your projected income isn’t quite where you want it to be, don’t worry - there are steps you can take to improve things.

From increasing your monthly contributions and adjusting your retirement timing to exploring different investment strategies, there’s always a path forward. Get expert help when you need it

If you’re unsure about any aspect and want some expert guidance, an independent financial adviser (IFA) can make all the difference.

An IFA can talk you through your options, show you how to get the most out of your savings, and put together a plan that fits your goals.

Having someone with the right knowledge and experience on your side will help you enjoy the retirement you’ve worked so hard for.

Can my ex demand our children meet his new partner if they don’t want to?

Q:My ex and I split up over a year ago, basically because he is a philanderer. The split was quite acrimonious and was particularly upsetting for our three children who sadly witnessed many of the rows. For several months the children didn’t want to spend time with him. Now he is trying to persuade the children to meet his new partner, but they really don’t want to because they know he cheated on me with her. Do they have to meet her?

A: Any disputes surrounding children can be dealt with by the family courts under the Children Act 1989. When deciding what order to make, the main concern of the family court would always be the welfare of the children, and the Court would apply criteria as set out in the ‘welfare checklist’. This checklist includes a child’s ‘ascertainable wishes and feelings’.

It might be deemed unreasonable to force a child to spend time with a parent’s new partner, particularly if they did not wish to, and your ex may therefore be criticised for pushing the issue. It is possible that a Court welfare officer would become involved to discuss the issue with the children and they would prepare a report to the Court which would recommend the next steps in the proceedings. What weight would be applied to a child’s wishes and feelings in the family Court would depend on many issues, for example their age and the individual circumstances of the case. The welfare officer and the Court would endeavour to achieve you and your ex reaching an agreement that is in the children’s best interests. If, however, that was not possible, the Court would impose a decision by way of Court order. As with all issues following separation and relationship breakdown, you should consult with a solicitor.
