Fund raisers given six month extension in fight to save Shropshire organic farm
Fund raisers campaigning to raise up to £1.5m to safeguard the future of a Shropshire organic farm have been given an extra six months to raise the funds they need.
The Babbinswood Farm Community Benefit Society - a type of charitable co-operative - wants to buy part of Babbinswood Farm, Whittington, near Oswestry, so that the land does not have to be sold on the open market.
It had an original deadline of 31 March to raise the funds it needs to buy up to 117 acres of the farm. The campaign has already raised more than £67,000 in six weeks.
Now the CBS team, thanks to the commitment of campaigners and the level of community engagement, has been able to negotiate a six-month extension to 30 September to raise the funds.
The community benefit society aims to place part of the farm in community ownership to protect its organic status as well as preserving and expanding the wide range of community projects that take place there.
The CBS recognised when it launched the public appeal in February that the timescale was a huge challenge but has since been delighted by the level of support from the community and beyond.
“This is brilliant news. We went public in February knowing the ask was very tight but hoping that support would be so great that we could negotiate more time like this. Now we have the necessary breathing space to get the message out and secure the important grants that are part of our business plan,” said Daisy Kirtley, one of the directors at Babbinswood Community Benefit Society.
She said the sale of community shares, which then give members of the public a say in the stewardship
of the land, had gone really well. But the CBS was also working on several different funding streams alongside it.
“We are receiving donations too, which is a good route for people who want to support what we’re doing without the life-long involvement that shareholding offers. Our national Crowdfunder campaign is helping to sell the shares and receive donations online, and we are also working on several sizeable grant applications,” she said,
The campaign was launched after the farm, farmed by mother and daughter Barbara Jones and Casha BowlesJones, came under threat of being sold as part of a divorce settlement.
The community benefit society will be leasing part of the farm in community ownership back to the farming family, who have farmed at Babbinswood for five generations, to facilitate long-term organic stewardship of the land.
Further information on the campaign is available through the website at babbinswoodfarmcbs.org.uk or by emailing future@babbinswoodfarmcbs.org.uk
Local Business Owner Pledges Support to Hope House
When Ellesmere based, Jonathan O’Connor of Access4Lofts Shrewsbury first supported Hope House in 2023, it was through their Business Champions initiative — a scheme that, while no longer running, left a lasting impression on him.
That initial donation has driven him to provide something in the longer term. “I decided then and there to make Hope House my chosen charity and began putting aside a small contribution from every job I completed. Over the past year, I’ve carried out around 160 jobs — and from each one, I set aside £3. By the end of the year, I was able to round that total up to £500. Next year, I plan to increase it to £5 per job,” Jonathan explains.
“As a parent with a young family of my own, I can’t begin to imagine the unimaginable — what these children and their families must endure at such a young age. If there’s anything I can do to support them, and the incredible team at Hope House who care for them, I will.
“We’re a small, family-run business based in Ellesmere, and we’ll continue to do our part. Hope House isn’t just a charity — it’s a lifeline. And we’re proud to stand behind them.”

Get active in 20Thrive and support your local hospital
The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital (RJAH) is calling on people to get sporty, challenge themselves, and make a difference with its exciting new fundraising initiative – 20Thrive.
RJAH Charity is encouraging supporters to take on a fitness challenge in 2025. This series of sporting events offers participants the chance to get active, set personal goals and raise vital funds to support patients and staff at RJAH.
The charity already offers spaces with TCS London Marathon – which proves popular amongst supporters and often has a waiting list each year. 20Thrive aims to build on this, offering up different opportunities for those wishing to support RJAH in this way.
RJAH Charity has been named as a charity partner for the Chirk 10k, organised by Adrenaline Sports – opening up even more chances for people to get involved and show their support.
Alan Lewis, Owner and Founder of Adrenaline Sports, said, “We look forward to working with the team and helping them raise vital funds for the hospital – I can’t wait to see everyone on the start line on the 13 July.”
Anyone wanting to take part in the Chirk 10k should contact RJAH Charity directly. Participants will receive a code and instructions to register their charity place through Adrenaline Sports.
For more information on how to take part in 20Thrive email rjah.fundraising@nhs.net or call 01691 404401 / 404588.

Borderland Mountain Bike Challenge
Over 30 years old but still going strong!
10am on Saturday 10 May will see the Borderland Mountain Bike Challenge start from Rhiwlas Village Hall once again.
Borderland Rotary Club first held the challenge way back in the early 90’s when it was a fun ride for members to raise a little money for local charities. Through the years it has grown in popularity to become a fixture on the annual mountain bike calendar and the great event it is today.
cause to support. I remember the very early days of the event and how keen my father was to support the event by riding it and sponsoring it.
Dairi-Pak, a local packaging company, has sponsored the ride every year - as Dairi-Pak’s founder, Brian Gray, was one of the original members of Borderland Rotary Club when the event was conceived. Sadly, Brian passed away in 2012 but Tim Gray, his son who took over the business in 2006, takes up the story. “This is still a wonderful event, and the Air Ambulance is such a good
“My father had been a keen road cyclist as a youth with many of his rides taking him through Europe; so, on his 50th birthday I bought him his first mountain bike (a hard tail Saracen). He took to mountain biking like a duck to water and he continued to ride the event well into his 70s. I too rode the challenge throughout the 90’s and early 2000’s. As fatherhood consumed more of my time and age took its toll on my fitness, I didn’t ride the challenge for over a decade although Dairi-Pak continued to sponsor the event. But with the assistance of an E-Bike, I am back in the saddle and have ridden the event for the last two years.”
The 22-mile challenge takes the riders over green lanes and farm tracks, over private land, up and down the beautiful foothills of the Berwyn Mountains and is available to riders of all competence however, it’s not for the faint hearted as there is only about 300 metres of tarmac and probably no more than that on level ground. It’s a challenge but also a wonderful social event for riders of all ages and competence to enjoy.
Jonathan Jones, who organises the ride for Borderland Rotary Club said, “I still find the process of organising the Challenge as exciting and daunting as I ever did and although we’ve been at it for many years, it has never lost its charm and I still love to see hundreds of keen mountain bikers ride off into the Berwyn Mountains and raise thousands and thousands of pounds for charity. It has meant that with the support of such sponsors as Tim Gray from Dairi-Pak and James Davies from Mule Cycles of Oswestry, we have been able to give charities like Air Ambulance a regular annual donation as well as supporting lots of local good causes”.
This year there will be a coffee and snack van, a hot food burger van, an ice cream seller and music on the field so let’s have a party and hope we the weather plays ball.
Don’t forget, all you need is a bike, a helmet and the heart of a lion.

Are you joining the Trefonen Hill Walk? 23 - 26 May
2025
Trefonen Hillwalk began in 1991 when a walk was planned from Trefonen village to the top of Mynydd Myfyr. A milk churn was placed at the top of the hill for donations.
Over the years the event has escalated into a fundraising weekend. The Hillwalk takes place over the May Spring bank holiday with different activities planned for all the family, raising money for different charities, one UK based and one overseas.
This year’s chosen charities are:
• Severn Hospice
• Medecins Sans Frontiers
• Offa Community Support Group - Trefonen Activities that are planned will include walks for all ages and abilities, a murder mystery night, hill run, duck race, quiz, motorcycle trial, football golf and bingo.
Highlands to Home: This year, there’s a special challenge being undertaken by Neil Owen, who is planning to ride his mountain bike from Aviemore, Scotland back to the village of Trefonen over 7 days. Neil is fundraising for Severn Hospice and donations can be me via his Just Giving page – search for Highlands to Home.
The Scarecrows are back! This year, lots of requests have meant the scarecrows are coming back to the village. This event has proved popular in the past, so people are invited to make a scarecrow and display it on the village green in Trefonen for everyone to enjoy. There’s even a prize for the winning scarecrow!
Here’s what’s in store for you over the May Spring bank holiday:
Friday 23 May: Murder Mystery Night, Trefonen Village Hall.
Saturday 24 May, 8am:
Across the Cynllath walk, starting at Trefonen Village Hall. A 10 or 16 mile walk starting from Trefonen Village Hall. Visit www.sientries.co.uk to book onto the walk.
Saturday 24 May, 2pm: Hillwalk Motorbike Trial, New Barns Farm.
Saturday 24 May, 7.30pm: Trefonen Hillwalk Quiz, Trefonen Village Hall.
Sunday 25 May, 9.30am: Hill Walk family service at Trefonen Church.
Sunday 25 May, 11am: Mynydd Myfyr Hill Run, starting at Trefonen Village Hall.
Sunday 25 May, 2.30pm: Family Fun Afternoon including: a duck race, football golf, BBQ, bar, Artisan market and a car meet.
Monday 26 May, all day: A day of the family walks will be on offer. 3 or 6 mile walk starting from Trefonen village green, where you can register 8am-5pm. Refreshments are available at New Barns Farm.
Monday 26 May, 6.30pm: End the day with a game of Bingo at Trefonen Village Hall.
The theme for this year’s Hillwalk is ‘All are Welcome’ - and so you are!

Celebrating 10 years of the Trefonen Community Café
Ten years ago, in April 2015, the first Community Café was held in Trefonen village hall. It’s all thanks to the initiative of four people: Jeremy Gadbury, Sally Humphries, Clare Laycock and Jayne Lewis, supported by the local church. They saw the need for somewhere people could come together once a week. It was decided on a Tuesday
To mark the Community Café’s 10th anniversary there was a birthday cake, a display of photos and live music. All those who were originally involved in setting it up, but no longer able to be involved were invited back.
morning, offering those who came, a place to have a chat with friends and neighbours and a place of welcome for those new to the area and that concept continues to this day. Refreshments including homemade cakes were available. At the start lifts were offered to people so no one was excluded. The initial set-up costs like the coffee machine were financed through donations.
Although supported by All Saints
Church, Trefonen, the volunteer rota for opening/closing, serving refreshments and supplying delicious homemade cakes includes both those from the church and the wider community. It has always been the policy that there is no charge for the refreshments, but donations are welcomed which support the running costs of the cafe. We support the local village shop by buying various supplies and the Fairtrade coffee from them.
Originally the café opened from 9am during school term-time, for those able to come after taking their children to school, but over the years the numbers gradually fell away so the café now opens 10am to 11.30am. The only time the café is not open, is for the two weeks over Christmas and for the annual coach trip to the seaside in August. At one time there was also a trip to the pantomime, although that no longer happens. Covid had an impact, but the café opened its doors as soon as it was allowed and people returned.
Most of those who come are regulars, but it’s also good to see new faces. When serving refreshments there is always time for a friendly chat. It is a welcoming space, much enhanced by the local Arty group’s imaginative displays.
A monthly Foot clinic session was provided, although since Covid that
is now bi-monthly. Other activities and events have always taken place from the Carol sing-along, with the Trefonen school children joining us in past years, to supporting various charities and fund-raising events throughout the year. The most recent charity we supported was this year’s Oswestry Foodbank’s Easter Egg appeal.
It is a convenient place for small group meetings to take place. Over the last year Qube had been able to offer their monthly pop-up blood pressure testing sessions. In more recent years some of the community cafe volunteers have provided support in serving refreshments in the village hall during the popular Trefonen Hill Walk weekend, for those returning from the long walks or hill run.
We could not let such an occasion pass by without some sort of celebration, so to mark the Community Café’s 10th anniversary there was a birthday cake, a display of photos and live music. All those who were originally involved in setting it up, but no longer able to be involved were invited back.
It is a huge thank you to everyone who volunteers and those who support us, that we were able to raise a cup and say cheers to 10 years of the community café and long may it continue.

Salon XV Oswestry
Three years ago, we opened the salon with a dream, and now, looking back, we see a journey filled with challenges, triumphs, and the unwavering support of our team and clients. Our salon, now a vibrant space in Oswestry, has evolved, and we’re proud of the community we’ve built.
Reflections on the Journey:
The first year was a whirlwind of learning. From managing finances to understanding the local market, every day was a lesson. We learned the importance of strong customer service, the value of building relationships, and the need for constant adaptation. The initial struggles taught us resilience and the importance of a positive attitude.
The second year brought growth and stability. We expanded our services, invested in better equipment, and started building a loyal client base. I also learned the importance of delegating tasks and trusting my team. This period solidified my vision for the salon and allowed me to focus on
creating a welcoming and professional atmosphere.
The third year has been about refining our approach and solidifying our reputation. We’ve focused on client retention, implemented a new booking system, and embraced social media marketing. We’re proud of the positive feedback we’ve received.
As we look towards the future, we envision continued growth and

Just some of our excellent reviews:
“Superb hair cut and even better colour. Going to get your hair cut should be a relaxing treat and at Salon XV they go above and beyond to make sure it is just that. The salon itself is gorgeous and has a relaxed vibe.I walked in with ‘Hagrid’ hair and walked out with luscious locks. Salon XV geets a 10 star review from me.”

innovation. We plan to expand our service offerings, explore new technologies, and further enhance the client experience. Our goal is to create a salon that is not just a place to get a haircut, but a place where people feel valued, pampered, and inspired. We are excited to see what the next chapter holds for our salon and the team.
“What can I say?My first experience of Salon XV with Sam - booked to revisit - full overhaul of colour and a cut - fantastic results - amazing fella - super super super impressed!.”

Shropshire’s first Padel Club comes to Oswestry
Nestled within the luxurious surroundings of the Lion Quays Hotel in Oswestry, Ace Padel Club is Shropshire’s first dedicated padel club, bringing one of the world’s fastest-growing sports to the local community. The club was founded by two Oswestry-based families, the Ramsays and the Clarkes, who fell in love with padel years ago but struggled to find courts in Shropshire—or even nearby. When the opportunity arose to build the club on the Lion Quays Resort grounds, it was a perfect match. Now, Ace Padel players can enjoy a state-ofthe-art facility while also having access to the resort’s leisure facilities, creating the ultimate padel experience. As locals themselves, the Ramsay and Clarke families are thrilled to introduce this exciting sport to the community, bringing a fresh buzz to Shropshire.
Padel is a dynamic and inclusive sport that blends elements of tennis and squash. It’s easy to learn, incredibly fun to play, and suitable for all ages and skill levels.
Since opening its doors on 3 March 2025, Ace Padel Club has been overwhelmed by the response, welcoming over 150 different players in its first month—ranging in age from just 5 years old to 75.
Ace Padel Club is more than just a place to play—it’s a vibrant community where people of all ages and abilities come together to enjoy the game and its many benefits. Whether you’re looking for competitive matches, friendly
social games, or simply a new hobby, Ace Padel Club has something for everyone. The club offers classes and social sessions throughout the week, led by qualified coaches who ensure that every player, regardless of age or experience, can enjoy this fantastic sport.
Beyond the game itself, the club fosters strong social connections, helping players build friendships and expand their networks through regular matches, social events, and group sessions. Padel is not only a great way to stay active—improving fitness, strength, and coordination—but it also provides significant mental health benefits. Its fastpaced yet accessible nature helps reduce stress, boost mood, and enhance overall well-being.
All court bookings, classes, and social sessions at Ace Padel Club can be made via the Playtomic app. You can also find the club on social media @acepadelclubuk.

Rural Communities Left Behind by Centralised Ambulance Services
It is an unfortunate truth that people in rural areas are too often an afterthought when national policies are drawn up. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the way our ambulance services are structured.
Imagine, for a moment, a world where every NHS plan succeeds. Handover delays are a thing of the past, the urgent and emergency care plan has been fully implemented, and staffing shortages are resolved. Even in this best-case scenario, the people of North Shropshire would still be waiting too long for an ambulance.
Why? Because the system is simply not designed for them. Ambulance stations in Whitchurch, Oswestry, and Market Drayton have closed. The nearest alternative is often more than
20 minutes away – and that’s if the roads are clear. Instead of having a nearby base to respond from, paramedics are left relying on sheer luck – hoping an available ambulance is roaming the area when an emergency call comes in. That is no way to run a service that people rely on in life-or-death situations.
Meanwhile, paramedics themselves are being let down. They need somewhere to rest and recover between exhausting callouts. But with centralised ambulance stations increasingly distant, they are left returning to hubs miles away from the rural communities they serve. This system might work in an urban setting, but in North Shropshire, it is failing.
The Government must acknowledge that a one-size-fits-all approach is not working. We need a system that recognises rural reality – where emergency services are there when people need them, not just when it’s convenient to the model. The people of North Shropshire deserve better, and I will continue to fight to ensure they get it.

Whether you are already a seasoned raw feeder or interested in switching your animals to a raw diet then we have everything you need and much more.

Poor oral health has been linked in both humans and pets to systemic diseases of the kidneys and liver, heart disease, lung disease, diabetic complications and cancer, according to holistic veterinarian Karen Becker.
Ways to Prevent Dog Gum Disease
NUTRITION: Natural diets, with chewy muscle meat, raw meaty bones, and recreational bones provide the right habitat for your dog’s healthy oral bacteria. Natural live enzymes and “good” bacteria help prevent tartar build-up. If you’re not a raw feeder and prefer to avoid raw bones for your dog, you can give healthy chews like dehydrated beef trachea, bully sticks or dried tendons.

• Yellow teeth
• Sore bleeding gums

WEEKLY BONE BROTH is full of minerals that help strengthen teeth and gums.
BEE PROPOLIS is antibacterial, antiparasitic and antiviral. Apply it if your dog looks like he might be getting an abscess, or use it to cover an exposed root. You can use it as a dog swollen gums treatment too.

Football club charity to take over youth building
The New Saints FC Foundation will shortly be signing a lease with Oswestry Town Council to take on the running of The Centre in Oak Street. The building is to be renamed The Centre Spot and will become a hub for youth and community wellbeing activities.
Gill Jones of The New Saints FC Foundation said the existing organisations using the building including the OsNosh community food programme and the St John’s Ambulance Brigade would continue to be based there. There are also plans for new organisations and activities to come on board making use of all The Centre Spot’s facilities including its music studio and the multi-use games area next to it.
“Our role in taking on the overall management from Oswestry Town Council will help safeguard the future of the building and its facilities for the community of Oswestry and particularly for its young people,” she said.
The Foundation has ambitious plans for The Centre Spot to complement the range of youth and sport activities it organises across northwest Shropshire. It’s already helping to run a Wednesday evening youth club alongside Shropshire Youth Association and has just launched a further three football sessions for children aged 2 to 16-years including Footie Families for toddlers and a girls only Teen Saints session.
The Foundation is also planning a walking football
session for people who have Parkinson’s disease in association with Parkinson’s UK and the Football Association of Wales.
She paid tribute to Oswestry Town Council for its role in the hand-over. “The Council has been absolutely brilliant and has given us tremendous support to get to the stage where the lease will be signed very shortly.
“We are all very much looking forward to working with all the partner organisations to develop this wonderful asset for the town. We hope the community will fully embrace the changes and make the most of all the activities and facilities.”

80TH ANNIVERSARY 8 MAY
Oswestry Town Council and the Oswestry Branch of the Royal British Legion are marking the VE Day anniversary with a short service at the Memorial Gates on Thursday 8 May at 11am and a community VE Day Celebration in Cae Glas Park on Saturday 10 May, 12-4pm, with 1940s fun for all the family.
2025 marks 80 years since Germany’s surrender to the Allies and the end of WWII, celebrated yearly on 8 May.
A brief history of WWII
On 3 September 1939, Prime Minister Sir Neville Chamberlain, announced to a hushed nation that we were at war with Germany. It was the beginning of the greatest conflict in world history, dwarfing even the horrors of The Great War 1914 -1918. By the same evening, Britain and France had declared war on Germany. The National Socialist regime under Adolf Hitler had already invaded Poland, and by the time Hitler attended the victory parade in Warsaw on 5 October, his forces had left behind much death and destruction.
Norway and Denmark were
A SHARED MOMENT OF CELEBRATION
invaded and occupied, and the poorly prepared British force had to retreat home leading to the resignation of Chamberlain. Sir Winston Churchill replaced him on 10 May 1940. The same day, Hitler unleashed his Lightning Strike on Western Europe. Holland and Belgium fell quickly, and the French Army was in disarray. The Anglo-French Group 1 managed to narrowly escape, courtesy of a flotilla of small pleasure and fishing boats that had sailed across the Channel from the South Coast to Dunkirk. France surrendered to Germany on 22 June 1940. Hitler planned to continue his conquest of the West by invading and occupying Great Britain, known operation Sealion. He realised that Britain would not want to risk its big ships in the Channel and so reasoned that airpower would be the key determinant in the invasion. The air battle was fierce, and Britain owes its freedom to the bravery and determination of RAF Fighter Command pilots. On 17 September 1940, Hitler put off Sealion indefinitely having failed to subjugate Britain. He looked instead eastwards, and thus committed his forces to war on several fronts, with its inherent risks.
Russia and Germany started the war as allies but on 22 June 1941, Germany betrayed them and invaded Russia taking them completely by surprise. The Germans advanced quickly through Russia and by August 1941, were only 200 miles from Moscow but never managed to capture the city. The advance across Russia slowed as winter came on. When the brutal winter had passed, the Russians took the initiative and began to push back after replenishing troops and re-arming with superior weapons from the USA and Britain. They drove the Germans back to Berlin and in 1945, shortly after Hitler’s suicide, they captured the city. Although there was no British fighting in Europe at this time, the 8th Army (Desert Rats) was in North Africa where they faced the Italians and later the Germans. The campaign, which was won by Allied Forces under Field Marshal Montgomery, continued successfully securing French North Africa under the Codename Operation Torch (the landing of US Forces in Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia). Having secured French North Africa, the Allies took Sicily and then landed at Salerno on
the Italian mainland. Fierce fighting characterised battles at Anzio and Monte Cassino en route to Rome which fell to the Allies on 4 June 1944. Mussolini, the Italian Leader was deposed and later the Generals surrendered to the Allies.
Two days later, the D Day landings by the British, Americans and Canadians were launched on the beaches of Normandy, Northern France. The attack was successful and marked the beginning of the end of the German Army which now faced aggressive forces on two fronts. However, there was still much more severe fighting to be done until the German Army unconditionally surrendered in Rheims, France on 7 May 1945.
On VE Day, 8 May 1945, there was great celebration everywhere that the war in Europe had ended but poignant reflection too. There were many who were never to return, and the physically and mentally wounded were facing uncertain futures. The end of the war also did not represent an end to the suffering and losses of the Jewish community and others persecuted and by the Nazis. So many never saw VE Day at all.
VE DAY CELEBRATION ITINERARY
Saturday 10 May: VE Day Celebration begins with a parade starting from Cross Street at 12pm to the Memorial Gates where there will be another short service of remembrance. Serving members of the British Armed Forces and veterans are encouraged to polish their medals, turn up on the day and join the parade.
After the service, there will be a host of free 1940s displays and activities to enjoy including games, entertainment, vintage rides, live music, brass bands, jitterbug dancing and more.
Visitors of all ages are urged to come dressed in 1940s fashions to be in with a chance of winning prizes for best fancy dress and hats kindly sponsored by Approved Care and Support.
Neil Lawrenson, Chair of the Oswestry RBL Branch, said, “VE Day was a moment in time where people in the UK, across Europe and the world, stopped to celebrate the end of the war in Europe, their freedom and the start of the long road to recovery and the rebuilding of lives and communities. It would take until August 1945 for the conflicts in Burma and Japan to end.
“It must also be remembered that not everybody who fought in the war came back and many who did were injured and traumatised. We must not forget the losses, sacrifices and contributions made towards the war effort and the awful atrocities discovered in the fog of war.”
Arren Roberts, Oswestry Town Council Town Clerk, said, “We want this VE Day event to feature as many local entertainers and traders as possible. We have lots already confirmed for the day, but if you run a food truck, cater for afternoon teas, or perform as an entertainer, we would love to hear from you.
“We’re also keen to capture people’s memories. If you, your family, friends or neighbours got involved on the day or served in the war, we’d love to hear your stories and see your photos so we can include them in a special display.”
Join forces personnel, veterans, cadets, historians and entertainers at Oswestry’s VE Day Celebration. It’s a FREE event, and visitors are welcome to bring along picnics, blankets and chairs to enjoy this shared moment of celebration.
If you would like your business to be part of the event email: oswestry. chairman@rbl.community.
* The role of the Royal Navy and the important war in the Pacific fought mainly by the Americans have not been covered.
To share your VE Day memories and photos email: oswestry. treasurer@rbl.community.
Following on from the madcap Easter frolics of The Street Circus, Oswestry BID is thrilled to be bringing The Beach back to Festival Square for some serious sandy fun over the weekend of 24-25 May 2025.
This will be the fourth year for The Beach, such is its popularity with children and families, enjoying seventeen tonnes of the finest sand, lined by deckchairs and all surrounded by the sound of waves and seagull calls!
BID Manager, Adele Nightingale is excited to see another great family weekend in the town centre.
“Any outdoor event like this requires lovely weather to make it really special,” she said, “so we are hoping for a couple of wonderfully sunny days. It’s all part of our desire to make Oswestry a great place to live, work, visit and enjoy. Of course, what really makes it is to see the smiles on the faces of the children and families, relaxing and building sandcastles!”
These captivating events boost and amplify the profile of Oswestry to a wider and national audience, attracting visitors and also business owners to invest in our town. Recently, The Times featured Oswestry in their top 20 places to invest in property in 2025 - so clearly it is making positive waves.

Joy Ride (15)
AVAILABLE TO STREAM ON NETFLIX AND RENT ELSEWHERE.
Some films aren’t quite the film you expect, and ‘Joy Ride’ is the perfect example. It might look a typical US gross out comedy, but this is a film where great characters with real heart raise a script to surprising levels.
Four Chinese American women take a trip to China to help one of them seal a business deal, nothing goes to plan, and shenanigans occur. There’s a drug fuelled train journey, an improvised K-pop routine and a very unexpected tattoo revelation. Underwriting the gags and slapstick is a story of not quite belonging, identity, friendship and loss. Absolutely not for younger viewers, ‘Joy Ride’ is consistently funny yet able to find genuinely touching moments within the chaos. Don’t let the trailer put you off, this is a ride worth taking.

Chosen by Lana from Book Worms
A story of adventure, fantasy, and friendship. Puffin Lau has been brought up hearing fascinating stories about the Kuri, a magical wildcat. Following her dreams she helps a Kuri get back to its home island.
Land of the Last Wildcat was a book I really enjoyed. I found every chapter intriguing and fun. It is a wonderful book for animal lovers and fans of adventure stories. I loved learning about Puffin’s story and about the Kuri, even though they don’t exist in the real world…Or do they?

This is a quick and easy dish – make with chicken or leave out the meat, adding a 400g tin of drained chickpeas with the p otatoes for a great veggie version.
Serves 4 | Preparation 20 minutes
Cooking time 30 minutes
• Chopped fresh coriander and lime wedges, to garnish
For the paste
• 1 tbsp ground coriander
• 1 tsp turmeric powder
• 1 tsp paprika
• ½ tsp cinnamon
• ½ tsp ground ginger
• 1 onion, peeled and roughly chopped
• 2 cloves garlic, peeled
• 1 tbsp vegetable oil
To serve
• Warm naan bread (optional)
• 4 tbsp natural yoghurt (optional)
METHOD
1. First make the paste. Blend all the ingredients in a mini blender and set aside.
2. Heat the vegetable oil in a large pan, add the chicken and cook over a high heat for 3-4 minutes until beginning to brown. Add the onion and pepper and cook, stirring regularly, for 5 minutes until the vegetables have softened. Stir in the paste and cook for another minute before adding the potatoes, tomatoes, coconut milk and stock cube. Break up the tomatoes with a spoon, bring up to the simmer, cover and cook for 15-20 minutes until the potatoes are tender and chicken cooked through.
3. Whilst the curry is cooking, dry fry the cashew nuts in a small pan until golden –keep moving them round the pan so they don’t catch.
4. Serve the curry in warm bowls garnished with the cashew nuts, coriander and lime wedges. Add a dollop of yoghurt and serve with naan bread if you fancy.
Tucked away in Oswestry, lies a culinary gem that transports diners to the sun-kissed streets of Spain. Sabrosa, a cosy Spanish tapas restaurant, is a must-visit destination for anyone who craves the bold flavours and warm hospitality of España. From the moment you step through the door, the aroma of sizzling chorizo and sweet garlic notes hit you, teasing your senses. The décor, a vibrant blend of rustic and modern elements, adds to the lively atmosphere, making you feel like you’re in a bustling Barcelona tavern.
But it’s the food, of course, that’s the true star of the show. Sabrosa’s tapas menu is a love letter to Spanish cuisine, with dishes that highlight the country’s rich gastronomic heritage. From classic favourites like tortilla Española and croquetas to more innovative creations such as Aubergine Fries with a maple syrup dipping sauce, each bite is a
masterclass in flavour and technique.
The patatas bravas, crispy fried potatoes smothered in a spicy tomato sauce, are a revelation. The aceitunas, marinated olives infused with garlic and lemon, are addictive.
But what truly sets Sabrosa apart is its commitment to authenticity. The chef and owner, a man who has lived and worked in Barcelona, has carefully curated a menu that reflects the diverse regional cuisines of native Spain.
In addition to its outstanding cuisine, Sabrosa also boasts an impressive selection of Spanish wines and hand-made cocktails. The sangria, made with fresh fruit and a hint of citrus, is a refreshing accompaniment to the meal. And the attentive, knowledgeable staff are happy to guide you through the menu and offer pairing recommendations.
In short, Sabrosa is a must-visit destination for anyone who loves Spanish cuisine. With its warm atmosphere, authentic flavours, and exceptional service, this tapas restaurant is a true gem. So, gather your friends, grab a seat, and get ready to embark on a culinary journey through the flavours of España. ¡Buen provecho!

“Everything in moderation –including moderation”
If you listen to the health news it can seem everything is bad for you! Butter, cheese, too much exercise, too little exercise, being too hot, or cold – the list could go on – and would definitely include salt. The first mention of human use of salt goes back to 6000 BC but even before that all humans needed some salt to live – it is an essential component of our diet. It was quite rare and expensive for centuries - apocryphally roman soldiers were paid in salt: their salary!
So, how much is good for you as an adult? We need about 6g a day – a level teaspoon worth. But it gets complicated because salt creeps into our diet in lots of crafty ways: three quarters of our need is supplied from our western diet alone. If we have too much it puts up our blood pressure and increases stroke risk and heart disease. Too little and we feel tired, get headaches, perhaps some
cramps and nausea. The World Health Organisation (and if you say “Who” then I won’t laugh) reckons salt reduction could save seven million lives over the next five years – so getting this balance right is important.
What can I do? I hear you say. Look for foods on the shelves with low or not salt content. The green or amber codes can help. Look out particularly for breakfast cereals, bread, soups, and sauces. Nuts and crisps are other culprits too. Cured meat and fish, olives and cheese can be high in salt. Add less salt to your cooking and try taking the salt cellar off the table. All of this sounds like more medical kill-joy stuff – but remember moderation: it does not mean none at all. Some work on reducing your “salt appetite” will improve your health and you just might be one of the WHO’s 7 million lives extended!

Law firm supports Traitors TV star in his quest to inspire
Andrew Jenkins, who shot to fame in the BBC show, The Traitors, is an inspirational character, overcoming a serious brain injury which almost cost him his life at the age of 21.
He now helps people overcome their own challenges and has teamed up with Shropshire law firm, Lanyon Bowdler, to share his story in a new episode of the firm’s Legal Lounge podcast.
Andrew is an ambassador for the Headway charity campaign, A Life Rewritten, and recently walked 1,200km in 42 days, through Scotland, England, Northern Ireland and finishing in Wales to raise money and awareness for the charity.
He said, “I was in a car crash when I was 21, and was in a coma for four weeks. When I woke from the coma, the first thing the doctor said was that I was never going to
walk again. My response to that was to say I guarantee that I will walk out of this hospital, and two weeks later I had learned to walk again.
“Looking back, I suffered with severe depression for a time after my injury but I refused counselling and just put a mask on, like lots of people do. It’s only really in the last couple of years that I have started to deal with it.
“I was proud to complete the 1,200km walk, and I did it to show the people who don’t believe in themselves, are told they can’t do something, that if you work hard enough you can achieve great things in life.”
Andrew now spends time talking to schools, colleges and organisations about his experiences and how important it is for people to be self-aware about their emotions and feelings.
He added, “The reason I do what
I do is because I don’t want people to struggle in silence, like I did for 25 years. I’m not some amazing guru or someone with academic wisdom, I’m just a normal guy, and if I can turn my life around, so can anyone.”
Debbie Humphries, of the personal injury team at Lanyon Bowdler, was among a group of staff from the firm who joined Andrew on his walk between Chirk and Melverley, and said he was an inspiration.
She said, “Andrew comes across with such enthusiasm and passion that I’m sure anyone who he is coaching or speaking to comes away with a real sense of purpose and a belief that they can achieve or do more. It was a pleasure to spend time with him recording the podcast.”

The Perfect Foundation
Flooring is one of the foundational aspects of interiors, and what you choose can make or break your interior aspirations. Most flooring options like real wood, stone, higher end vinyls and click flooring can accommodate the practical solutions a home needs. Cheaper options like laminates, won’t last as long, but can be easily changed out for something fresher a couple years down the line.

She admits being drawn to those not-quiteperfect homes that require a bit of imagination (and possibly a lot of hard work!) which come with a reasonable price and the promise of a fantastic home in the future.
While she’s not a homeowner herself yet, Millie’s learning all
about first-time buyer schemes, and her friends are already turning to her for advice! Out of hours, catch up with Millie at the Green Inn pub, run by her family in Llangedwyn, or out walking with her two dogs.
With her natural confidence and eagerness to learn, Millie is already proving a valuable member of team. Monks’ Oswestry office is continuing to grow, and apprentices like Millie are a sign of its thriving future. We wish her the best of luck!

Get Your Lawn and Hard Surfaces Summer-Ready with GreenThumb Oswestry
With summer just around the corner, it’s the perfect time to ensure your lawn is looking its best. Jason and Vicki from GreenThumb Oswestry understand the importance of expert lawn care, which is why they recommend their NutraGreen Summer Ready and Oasis treatments to keep your grass vibrant and healthy all season long.
The NutraGreen Summer Ready feed is designed to provide essential nutrients while encouraging strong root development. Using a controlled-release, no-scorch fertiliser, it gradually nourishes your lawn, promoting even growth and reducing stress during the hotter months. This treatment also includes targeted weed control to keep your lawn pristine. Applied between April and June, it’s a key part of GreenThumb’s Basic, Standard, and
Ultimate lawn care programmes, ensuring your lawn receives the attention it needs for long-term health.
The Oasis treatment is ideal for dry spells. Enriched with concentrated seaweed extract, it improves moisture retention, reducing the need for frequent watering. This treatment boosts root development and stress tolerance while giving your lawn that rich, deep green colour. It’s the perfect solution for maintaining a lush, healthy lawn, even during drier months.
To maintain a beautiful lawn, Jason and Vicki recommend regular mowing (without cutting too short), deep watering in the early morning or evening, and aerating the soil to encourage strong root growth. Regularly removing moss and thatch will also help your grass breathe and thrive.
GreenThumb Oswestry also offers expert treatments for hard surfaces like patios and driveways. Their mineral and plant-based cleaner gradually removes dirt and organic debris, leaving outdoor spaces looking fresh. They also provide professional hard surface weed control, targeting unwanted growth to prevent weeds from taking over. The team will inspect your surfaces before applying the treatment for the best results. A follow-up application is recommended after one month, with maintenance treatments every four months. Results begin within 24-48 hours and continue improving over the next 4-6 weeks.
For a lush lawn and beautiful, weed-free hard surfaces this summer, trust GreenThumb Oswestry. Get in touch today.

Local Gardens to Visit in North Powys
The National Garden Scheme in North Powys have some stunning local gardens open during May. On Saturday 17 May, Llanrhaeadr-Ym-Mochnant Garden Club will be holding their very popular annual Plant Sale from 9.30am in the Village Hall. Following on from this there will be five very different local gardens open to visitors from midday, with a combined admission of £6 (children free). Tea and home-made cakes will be available in the Hall.
Plas Yn Llan, in the centre of the village, is easily identifiable by its magnificent white wisteria which cloaks the main house in a cloud of blooms. The private courtyard is chock-a-block with perennials and espaliered pear and cordoned apple trees. Tre Tylluan and Rock House both have terraced gardens leading up steep steps rewarding the explorer with fantastic views of the village. Imaginative planting makes the most of the microclimate of the old quarry with colourful flowering shrubs and perennials. A little further out is 5 Hafod y Dorlan which borders the fast-flowing River Rhaeadr; shrubberies lead to a lovely summerhouse where you may even spot one of the resident dippers! Further out still is Isfryn, home to artist Stephen Hopper, who has surrounded his studio with tranquil planting and trees. His paintings – focusing
on local landscapes and historical episodes – will be on display.
Another local garden open in May (24-25 from 12-4pm) is the awe-inspiring hidden valley garden of Bachie Uchaf, about a mile out of Llanfyllin. The owners formed the magical dingle surrounding their farmhouse into a plantsman’s paradise: specimen trees, shrubs, rhododendrons and azaleas tumble down the valley towards a natural cascade and ponds. There are exceptional views over the surrounding countryside to be admired over tea and homemade cakes. Admission £5.50 (children free) with a garden trail for under 12s.

May in the garden
by Graham Mitchell
“Cast not a clout ‘til May is out”. Perhaps not completely advisable, as we get some warm May days, but your grandmother had a point. Although the days are longer and there is some warmth in that sun, the night can still be very chilly, and the risk of frost is very real. It is always a bit of a gamble as to when to plant out but hardening off your tender plants during the day gets them ready for that moment. I keep an eye on the forecast, but general rule of thumb is plant out the last week in May with the tomatoes going into the unheated greenhouse a week or so before. Gardener’s fleece is always ready just-in-case.
By this time every windowsill is crammed with plants and watering is a never-ending task. It comes as a great relief to get everything out in the soil. May daytime temperatures can be pretty warm, and it pays to do a regular inspection to make sure things don’t dry out. Pay special attention to plants in pots as they can dry out quickly. They can also become waterlogged too, so check the drainage holes. If you have terracotta pots that have been out all winter, inspect for cracks.
I plant up my hanging baskets as soon as the plugplants arrive in store. They are then in prime condition,
and they can establish themselves before being put outside. What are my favourite basket plants? I like to have plenty of foliage as well as flowers. There are old favourites like petunias, lobelia, geraniums, fuchsias, nasturtiums and verbena. But there is nothing to stop you trying others. Plants that are rather drought resistant are best. Nigella (Love in the Mist) is a real favourite of mine and they do well in the well-drained environment. Dwarf sweet peas work well, sedum and houseleeks are unusual. I don’t use mimulus anymore as they tend to get rather straggly after the first flush of flowers. If the basket is going somewhere shady then perhaps begonia rex or coleus. I’d love to see photos of your baskets later in the summer.

As retirement edges closer, you might be thinking about ways that you can grow your savings pot. However, with the cost of everyday essentials like food, fuel, and utilities still rising, it can often feel like an uphill struggle to set more money aside for the future.
In this article, independent financial adviser and co-director of Belgrave Wincham, Craig Roberts, shares four practical steps to help strengthen your retirement savings.
1. Reassess your investments
If you haven’t reviewed these for a while, put it at the top of your to-do list. The performance of investments can change over time, so it may be that you’re taking less risk now than you would like. Giving these a once over and making small adjustments could help put you in a better spot for the future.
2. Take advantage of tax relief
Check you’re making the most of available tax reliefs such as ISAs, pensions, capital gains tax, and personal savings allowances. These so-called ‘tax wrappers’ provide great benefits, and nearly everyone qualifies for them. Maximising these could result in significant savings, especially in the long term.
3. Consider your investment approach
If you have a lump sum of money that you’d like to invest, you could do it all at once or spread it out. The second of these – known as ‘pound cost averaging’ – can help manage the effects of market ups and downs and potentially provide growth in your retirement savings over time.
4. Seek professional guidance
If you’re unsure where to start or feel overwhelmed by the choices available, it could be worth considering professional help. An independent financial adviser can offer personalised guidance based on your unique financial situation and retirement goals.
Their role is to create and manage a financial plan tailored to your needs, helping you grow your retirement savings and secure your future.

How can cheating husband apply for nofault divorce without my agreement?
Q: I know my husband has been having an affair for at least a year. He says he hasn’t, but says he wants a divorce because he no longer loves me and children aren’t a reason to stay together. I told him I don’t want a divorce, but he said he is going to apply for a no-fault divorce whether I want it or not. Can he do this if I don’t agree. Surely, if I can prove his affair it wouldn’t be a no-fault divorce?
A: Under no-fault divorce law, a spouse cannot prevent a divorce from going ahead solely on the basis that they do not agree. Your husband can file a sole application for divorce provided his application meets the criteria - namely that you have been married for over a year, your marriage is legally recognised in the UK, and the relationship has permanently broken down.
If your husband makes a sole application and you fail to respond within 14 days of receiving the divorce petition, he can either ask the court bailiff to serve the papers on you or apply to the court for deemed service whereby the court is asked to accept that the other party has received the petition even though they have not acknowledged it. After a 20-week reflection period your husband can apply for the first order of the divorce, the Conditional Order. After the Conditional Order has been granted, your husband six weeks and one day later can apply for a Final Order. Once the Final Order has been approved, you will be legally divorced.
The divorce process does not decide financial arrangements or children matters. These matters must be handled separately. If the divorce does go ahead then you should see a divorce solicitor as soon as possible, who can help you both with the divorce itself and consideration of financial and children matters stemming from your separation.
