Asian inspiration Do you ever get the chance to really relax at home? With most of us committed to a fast-paced, busy lifestyle, how would it feel to come back to a peaceful, tranquil home? A place of harmony and serenity that awaits you at the end of each working day. An Asian-inspired room could help you to achieve the perfect relaxation space. Asian design is a fusion of different styles from Japan, China, Thailand, Malaysia and India. Designers tend to focus on their proximity to nature and the use of natural woods like bamboo is typical.

Colours Take inspiration from the colours of nature against a neutral backdrop like white, grey or cream. Layer with deep, rich wood tones on the floor, window shutters and furniture. Don’t be afraid to introduce a colour – vibrant accents can stand out against your neutral setting. Choose vibrant reds, deep purples or cherry blossom pinks. For a touch of luxury introduce some gold colour accessories.

Greenery Plants and shrubs add a natural element to the room, bring the outdoors in and create a calming atmosphere. With undeniable exotic beauty, the widely available orchid adds instant beauty to a room. Use orchids as a backdrop to an otherwise quiet space. Set on a shelf, a row of orchids will add symmetry and create a feature. Make the most of single plants by placing in front of a mirror.

Furniture If you have some time on your hands and some old furniture to rescue, why not try painting your way to an Asian oasis. Choose a paint that’s dark and glossy. Alternatively invest in a traditional carved chair to set the scene.

Brits’ secret love affair with hygge revealed New research shows that while many of us may be unfamiliar with the meaning of the Danish word hygge - less than a quarter (22 per cent) of those surveyed said they understood it - the Brits really do grasp the concept, even if they don’t realise it. Hygge centres on the simple things that make us feel cosy and content. Although there is no English translation UK homeowners are more tuned in than they know, with almost all respondents (98 percent) saying that they feel their home has an impact on their sense of wellbeing. The survey by Everest Home Improvements shows that the simple things work well for us too. More than a third of those questioned (38 per cent) say that nice scents

Human beings crave feelings of security and belonging. two attributes that happy homes offer, and the Danish term ‘hygge’ encapsulates this feeling of cosiness and contentment create a feeling of hygge in their homes, while two out of five (40 per cent) say natural light is important. More than half (58 per cent) say they feel content simply spending time with family, friends or partners and 43 percent say the simple act of locking their doors and windows gives them a sense of wellbeing. In true Scandinavian style, nearly a quarter of respondents (23 per cent) light a fire or log burner to help them feel contented, while around half (52 per cent) draw the curtains and almost a third (32 per cent) opt for the intimate appeal of candlelight. Bringing natural elements into the house such as flowers and pine cones create hygge for three in ten of us (29 per cent). TV psychologist Emma Kenny explains the importance of wellbeing in the home; “Human beings crave feelings of security and belonging. two attributes that happy homes offer, and the Danish term ‘hygge’ encapsulates this feeling of cosiness and contentment, which can only be achieved when we are fully at ease and feel warm and safe. “Our homes are not simply bricks and mortar; they are the foundation and embodiment of personal sanctuary, a space where we truly feel ourselves. Making our homes a little piece of personal perfection is really good for improving wellbeing and there are numerous studies that

have evidenced how the way we organise and look after our homes can make us feel really positive about our personal worlds. ln fact, taking time to add those extra special features can really enhance the way we feel about the spaces we inhabit, and in return enhance our lives.” “What was more of a surprise though was finding out quite how in tune we already are with the concept of hygge, which it turns out is much more of a British phenomenon than previously thought - even if we don’t have a name for it.”

New showroom is unveiled Customers at a Shropshire builders’ merchants will now be spoilt for choice thanks to the launch of a new kitchen and bathroom showroom. The TG Dream Kitchens and Bathrooms showroom has been unveiled at TG Builders’ Merchants, in Maesbury Road, Oswestry, and will employ three full-time staff. General Manager Mark Evans said customers could now explore ten full-sized kitchen displays and ten full-sized bathroom displays in the 220 sq m store.

Manager Ben Jones in the new TG Dream Kitchens and Bathrooms showroom in Oswestry

“Our aim was to create a showroom that gave customers the opportunity to see some of our products and accessories in a relaxed and realistic setting. Sometimes it’s difficult to imagine what a range would look like in the home environment, so by creating 20 full-sized displays, it’s much easier for customers to picture our styles in their own home.”

The kitchen displays offer all kinds of design styles including Timeless, Shaker, modern, inline, handleless, and gloss, as well as over 20 door options, and all types of worktop finishes such as granite, quartz, mirostone, solid wood, pvc edged laminate, and bull nose laminate.

Mark said the showroom was already proving extremely popular with customers, with the vast array of displays attracting a lot of attention. “It’s creating a real buzz with our customers because in a more typical kitchen and bathroom showroom, you only see smaller parts of a display – but we wanted to give our customers an experience that sets us apart from other suppliers, and it’s proving to be a great success.”

Satisfaction guaranteed The Carpet Loom has been proudly serving Newport and surrounding area since 1977 - the year of the Queen’s Silver Jubilee. Over the years we have seen many trends come and go but the one value that has never changed for us and has been foremost in all our dealings has been customer service and satisfaction.

Beds like everything we use can be cherished or abused and these factors can affect the life of the bed. Some mattresses require turning regularly, which helps with the longevity, others just require rotating top to bottom. We have an extensive range of beds starting from just £99 to several hundreds of pounds from Hypnos, Millbrook, Sealy and many more. So, whether you need a new mattress or a complete new bed, we have something for everyone and with a great range of bedsteads including wood, metal or upholstered.

Make your dreams come true! Help them by making sure you have a good mattress that is both supportive and comfortable to ensure a good night’s sleep... and dream. How old is your mattress? More importantly, how comfortable is it and does it still support you? Over time all mattresses will compress; springs will no longer bounce back to their original shape and size and you will lose some of the support they used to give you.

At Carpet Loom we have a new look to our extensive showroom We have a wonderful range of laid wooden flooring, so you can experience the full effect and appearance. We probably have the largest selection of Amtico Flooring, with many samples laid down to showcase the full range of colours and wonderful styles and designs.

You can create a timeless, modern interior with a functional edge. Amtico is an accessible range of flooring with a 25-year warranty, a hard-wearing surface and a palette of 284 products. As with the wood we always come to your home to measure and survey free of charge for your no obligation quote. We have a large selection of wool carpet samples including patterns from Brintons and Axminster, beautiful Berber by Mr Tomkinson and contemporary cool tones in the Victoria carpets range. If time is of the essence we have over 30 stock rolls of carpet available and many room-sized remnants ready for immediate fitting. Contract flooring is still a big part of our business so whether you have a one room office to a large, multiroom office building we can cater for all business needs.

Newport Beds: London House, 79 High Street, Newport, TF10 7AU Carpet Loom: Unit 6 Springfield Industrial Estate, Newport TF10 7NB www.carpetloomnewportbeds.co.uk

The trouble with that is, as we sleep virtually every night on the same mattress our body becomes used to the very slight changes that may occur, so many people will still say that their mattress is comfortable, or at least they think it is. Sadly, it is probably not supporting your body as it should be and it will be affecting your night’s sleep. It’s difficult to give a timescale as to when you should change your mattress as everybody is different. It’s beautiful | 27

of time both aesthetically as well as being of a high quality. We offer a complete turnkey solution, meaning we take care of all your install needs under one roof. We have trained tradesman in pluming, tiling, plastering and electrics, meaning your install is being undertaken by a skilled tradesman who specialises in his own area of expertise. This is twinned with our project manager who is on hand to answer any questions before the install begins, as well as being on site during your installation to ensure the job runs smoothly.

But don’t just take our word for it...

here is what three of our most recent customers had to say about the bathrooms that were designed, supplied and installed by Summer House.

House of fun

Three years old… and what a great three years it has been. Here at Summer House Bathrooms & Kitchens the time has flown and what fun we’ve had with our customers along the way. We’ve worked closely with our customers and together we have produced some truly stunning bathrooms and kitchens which have been both practical and beautiful. We have now helped well over 200 customers, from changing a leaky tap, installing a new downstairs loo, complete bathroom refurbishment, helped project manage home extensions and installed a brand-new kitchen. No job is too small for us at Summer House. We’ve found a unique niche in the market which all people who visit us in store are very pleased with. Not only do we help you to pick the very best quality of product for your budget, we also offer an extensive home visit service as well as project manage our team throughout the installation process. This enables us to keep the closest of control over the install process and so eliminate the majority of stress from the customer during the process. Since opening the doors we have gone from strength to strength and have established ourselves as a loyal and trustworthy company who offer the highest quality products for the people of Shropshire. During our time of trading we have also broadened our product range and can now boast what we believe to be the very best quality products in the area. We are very excited about the future and we want to create bathrooms and kitchens which will stand the test

‘Just to say thank you in helping us design our bathroom by suggesting several ideas, for example, removing a wide windowsill which has given us more space. Also, no hard sell, in fact the opposite, as with your guidance you saved us several hundred pounds by pointing out an almost identical product which was 15% cheaper. Please pass on our thanks to your installation team who were thoroughly professional and did an excellent job in gutting, then refitting our bathroom and downstairs cloakroom. It surpassed our expectations and we would have no hesitation in recommending Summer House’ Mr & Mrs Lloyd – Stirchley – Telford ‘Summer House Baths & Taps recently carried out a complete refurbishment of our main bathroom. The showroom staff led by Joe were extremely helpful during the initial selection process of the bathroom suite and tiles for both the walls and floor areas. The installation team also did a great job and were efficient, tidy and courteous at all times. We were so delighted with our newly transformed bathroom that we immediately commissioned the same company to refurbish our en suite bathroom and downstairs toilet. We are very pleased with all of the work carried out and would not hesitate to recommend Summer House Bathrooms & Kitchens.’ Mr & Mrs Lauren – Apley - Telford. Here at Summer House Bathrooms & Kitchens, we are a family run business with family values. We will discuss all your needs and will complete your own personal wish list. We can offer solutions to any problems which you think may stand in the way of you and your dream kitchen or bathroom. After ensuring you are happy at every stage of the process our team will still be on hand to ensure that you’re pleased with your installation It’s beautiful | 31

Care company puts cl Our values

Our Managing Director, Jenny Upshall, set up Allenby Douglas Care Services after a long career in nursing at a senior level, but the inspiration came from her father, Allenby Douglas Lummis. Mr Lummis was a prisoner of war of the Japanese and one of thousands forced to work on the infamous Burma Railway. Conditions were appalling, and many of the prisoners developed health problems that would plague them for the rest of their lives. After his return from World War II, Mr Lummis spent much of his time visiting old comrades with health problems in their homes and he was passionate that when someone was sick or frail the best place for them to be was in their own home. This philosophy is at the heart of what we do at Allenby Douglas, and Mr Lummis and his wife Babs helped Jenny set up the company in 1999. Sadly he passed away in 2005 but the company which bears his name has grown to employ around 50 staff.

38

Allenby Douglas Care Services is not just another home care company. In fact we pride ourselves on being different by caring for our clients as if they were members of our own family. How are we different? To start with, 75% of our directors are registered nurses and all of us play an active role in caring for our clients. Our team of staff and carers are trained to work to a professional standard, highly motivated and love what they do, which is one reason why our staff turnover is so low. We have a reputation for achieving quality outcomes and our costs are affordable and fair. We are proud that we make a real difference to the lives of our clients every day.

Our Team Our staff are our most important asset – lots of companies say that but we really mean it.

We’re careful to recruit locally as much as possible and we continually invest in training and developing our team.

Our CQC rating We’re especially proud that our care was rated ‘outstanding’ in our 2016 inspection by the Care Quality Commission. Here’s an extract from the report: People and relatives spoke very highly of the staff and the support they provided. They described staff as kind, helpful and friendly. One person said, “The carers treat me so well. They treat me like a human being. They love to talk to me. It’s a pleasure to see them coming.” Another person said, “They have all got good hearts, they are superb”. Staff were well motivated and wanted to provide a good service which allowed people to remain in their own homes.

s clients first We believe people who need help with their daily needs prefer to stay in their homes. Everybody is an individual and has different needs which may change over time, so we tailor our care services accordingly. We call this holistic care.

Most of all, we love what we do and that’s providing care for people of all ages where they feel most comfortable: In their own homes. Our staff are motivated and care about what they do – and they often go on making a difference outside office hours.

And our staff are all caring and motivated people, who get to know our clients and spot problems before they get out of hand. If you want to come and work for us please pop into the office or ring for an application form. Our starting rates of pay are from £8.41 - £9.30 per hour, extra for trained staff plus 41p per mile for travel. Extra pay award pending.

PLEASE POP INTO THE OFFICE MONDAY – FRIDAY 9.00 – 17.00 OR EMAIL FOR MORE INFORMATION

We love what we do

For example some of our team raise funds for the Alzeimers Society. Tamara Stoute, our Care and Finance Co-ordinator, raised more than £3,200 through a sponsored walk of the Great Wall of China! We’re not just any care agency, as you can see! Tamara Stoute at the Great Wall of China!

Welcome

to our world At Black Orchid salon we believe that a beautiful haircut or colour starts with a great relationship with your hairdresser, after all it’s not just a transaction! Having scoured the industry for the best in the business we have a great team of people who not only love their job but also like to laugh and smile, We believe that a trip to either of our salons should be like a Sunday afternoon at your best friends place. On hand to always offer you advice

and lead you in a direction you’re happy to go, our philosophy is simple — we only succeed when we help you to become the best version of you. That’s why we like to talk to you not only about your hair but about your life and your lifestyle too. You can be sure to always experience the same warm welcome and great service ( in fact we have been awarded not only five stars for each salon from the good salon guide but also colour expert status for each salon.) Talking of our colour expert status we have an exciting new colour concept to share with you. In fact it’s a whole new way to personalise your hair colour. Inspired by the trend of make up contouring, hair colour contouring is a bespoke colour application that works by using the careful placement of colour that works in the same way as makeup to highlight your best features and create shadows. This technique can be used to give an illusion of a different face shape and to enhance your natural skin tone. Call us at either salon and one of our colour experts can arrange a consultation and chat with you more, it’s just nice to know that just because the sun is shining it doesn’t mean you have to head for the full head of highlights this summer.

Skin of beauty Summer spells makeup with a natural, fresh look and a controlled shine. No need to replace your favourite foundation to get the glow. How? For a natural radiance, add a skin illuminator or highlighter to the top of your cheekbones, your forehead and a touch down the bridge of your nose. Finish the look with just a touch of bronzer or a pale blush over the apple of the

Beautiful braids

cheeks. Keep your lips summery and light in colour. Here are our favourite highlighters we tested.

Try out the latest braiding trend, great to wear on holiday and even on a windy day. Celebrity hairstylists have been creating tiny braids within long hair, a braid to one side or a traditional French plait. Keep braids in place with a bit of pomade or putty. I like to use some dry shampoo at my roots before I start as it creates a bit of volume and strength then finish with a light cover of hairspray. If in doubt, try a tutorial on YouTube!

Look the best you can! Jane Millington, owner and head practitioner at Body & Face Options clinic in Maesbury Marsh, tells us how she gets her clients to look good naked! Losing weight is a positive step towards gaining the ‘perfect’ body shape, but what happens after the weight loss? Most people are then left with hanging loose skin and relaxed muscle tone - this is because skin and muscle are used to having more volume which has now been reduced. My clients want to look as good naked as they do with their clothes on. That’s why I’ve developed an effective fourJane Millington step solution which can be M.S.B.T.H performed in half-hour time I.F.H.B.C I.H.B.C slots in the clinic. Step one: My Lipo is a nonsurgical liposuction that can be used to ‘melt’ stubborn fat cells that can’t be targeted through exercise. The treatment is painless and works using heated paddles that are used to ‘saponify’ fat.

In a liquid state, the fat is easier to drain from the body. The fat cells then collapse to give a smooth finish. The fat itself will be stored as energy in the adipose tissue, so we recommend a workout within 24 hours. Step two: The next step is an Endermologie treatment. This transports and drains the fat through the lymphatic system. It contours the body and is a vital part of a slimming program. I often have referrals from surgeons who have completed surgical liposuction on a patient who is left with areas of indentation. This smoothing treatment helps to eradicate those indentations. Step three: Pro Max lipo is non-invasive bipolar radio frequency treatment that tightens up loose skin and encourages collagen production. Step four: The final step is the Eurowave, which lifts and tightens muscle. This can be used to target all areas of the body and 18 minutes is equivalent to 369 sit-ups. Each client is given a personalised package to suit their needs. I want my clients to be able to go on holiday and feel confident because they look the best they can. All treatments are subject to an in-depth medical consultation.

Healthy summer salads Sushi salad bowl (www.makemoreofsalad.com) Preparation time: 5 minutes Cooking time: None Serves: 2

Ingredients 2 handfuls of herb salad mix 225g/8oz cucumber, cut into batons 3 spring onions, trimmed and sliced 1 x (170g) can of white crabmeat, drained 2.5cm/1 inch piece of fresh root ginger, peeled and grated 1 red chilli, deseeded and chopped 1 (20g) pack fresh coriander leaves, roughly chopped 15ml/1 tbsp of sweet chilli sauce zest and juice of 1 lime salt and freshly ground black pepper ½ sheet of nori, finely sliced Method Divide the salad leaves between two plates or bowls, then top with the cucumber, onions, crab. In a bowl, mix the ginger, chilli and coriander together with the chilli sauce and lime zest and juice. Season to taste. Drizzle the dressing over the salad and scatter over that nori. Serve with lime wedges as garnish.

Warm British asparagus, poached egg and parmesan salad (www.bills-website.co.uk) From Bill: “The easiest way to cook British asparagus is to dry-fry or griddle it – quickly, delicately – enhancing and adding to the flavour and texture of the spears with some crisp charring. This dish has a really fast turnaround time if you poach, warm and griddle simultaneously. Serve with some good crusty bread for mopping up every last drop of golden yolk. “ Ingredients (serves 4) Olive oil, for griddling and drizzling 300g British asparagus, trimmed 4 medium eggs
4 tbsp hollandaise sauce (optional – see below for recipe)
plenty of mixed salad leaves Parmesan, for shavings chive flowers, to garnish Method Lightly oil a frying pan or griddle and get it good and hot before laying the asparagus spears flat on the heated surface. Depending on the size of your pan, you may have to do this in

50 | It’s beautiful

batches, but each batch should only take a couple of minutes. Turn the spears or roll them over now and then to ensure they cook through without burning – although a little charring and blackening is good. While the asparagus is griddling, poach the eggs for 2-3 minutes in simmering salted water with a dash of vinegar. Warm the hollandaise sauce, if you are using it, and get four plates ready by putting a generous handful or two of salad leaves on each. Divide the crispy asparagus spears between the plates, spreading them over the leaves, and drizzle with olive oil. Drain the poached eggs using a slotted spoon and carefully balance one on each heap of asparagus and leaves. Spoon some hollandaise over the top if you like, then finish with a good handful of fresh Parmesan shavings, some sea salt and a grind or two of black pepper. Scatter some chive flowers over the top for a springtime flourish.

Bill’s hollandaise sauce Bill says “Buttery, lemony, rich and light all at the same time, hollandaise is a delicious and luxurious sauce, made with expensive ingredients. Which is why it’s so upsetting when it all goes pear-shaped or, to be precise, curdles. I reckon as many attempts at hollandaise sauce end up being poured down the kitchen sink
as make it to the table, with crestfallen and harried cooks fuming about the wasted ingredients, throwing down their aprons and abandoning their Masterchef dreams. But, if you take it slowly and are careful not to overheat at any stage, there should be a happy ending. “ Bill’s hollandaise is made with crème fraîche instead of olive oil. Purists may sneer, but it is less costly than

olive oil and has all the taste and smoothness we’re looking for. Ingredients: 4 egg yolks the juice of half a lemon 2 tbsp white wine vinegar 125g salted butter
 2 tbsp crème fraîche

whisking continuously. Remove from the heat and ideally serve immediately. Or you can keep it warm for a while in a covered heatproof bowl over very gently simmering water or in a Thermos flask until you’re ready to serve up.

Method Put the egg yolks, lemon juice and vinegar in a food processor and whizz for 5 minutes. Shortly before the end of the 5 minutes, put the butter in a small pan and melt it, making sure it just begins to sizzle but not burn. Pour the melted butter in
to the food processor, keeping blitzing all the while until fully blended. Pour the mixture back in the small pan, stir in the crème fraîche and put on to heat for 30 seconds,

Healthy facts • Eating asparagus promotes healthy bacteria in the large intestine and can help reduce bloating • It contains vitamin K, essential for healthy blood clotting • It’s a rich source of vitamin C, which boosts your immune system • Asparagus is a mild diuretic and is believed to help detoxify the body

The Oakley Arms BREWOOD

The Oakley Arms sits on the outskirts of Brewood but is a pub well within the hearts of the locals who drop by on horseback or bicycle or along with their dogs during country rambles. We are lucky enough to have the most fabulous lake which can be seen from many rooms within the pub and is flanked by our stone terrace which is the most wonderful place to dine on sunny days. We like to think of ourselves as a charming pub with well-spaced rooms with wooden floors and roaring fires, a well-stocked bar at the centre of all things and a beautiful garden room filled with light.

Menswear

Share the spotlight It’s not all about the bride Have you been into The Parade Shopping Centre in Shrewsbury recently? Located in St Mary’s Place, right in the heart of the town, it’s fast becoming the go-to destination for brides and grooms thanks to husband and wife team Anne and Mike Tucker. The pair dominate the centre with their beautifully presented retail spaces – each offering something very special for brides and grooms. While Anne runs extremely successful bridal gowns store Wedding World, just down the corridor – husband Mike has his own menswear and formal hire stores. After buying Martin David as a single menswear store in 2010, Mike has made a remarkable transformation and expansion of the store, more than doubling its floor space – creating a treasure trove of menswear to be explored and admired by even the most distinguished of dressers. It stocks the finest brands and premium fashion lifestyle outfits, a ‘must visit’ for gentleman’s attire in the region. Right opposite sits the formalwear hire store, the only fully independent dedicated formal wear hire in the county.

Mike, “although there’s been an increase in popularity in the midblue lounge suit with brown shoes as a more modern look. I strongly advise trying outfits on as quite often grooms will change their ideas on what they want once they start trying on other options. A lot of clients will say to me ‘I don’t want tails, they won’t suit me’ but once they try on some tails that fit them really well, they soon change their mind.” Mike has also noticed an increase in popularity in tweed waistcoats; “we’re getting a bit of a trend with grooms ordering or buying tweed waistcoats as gifts for their groomsmen, they are very cost effective and can be ordered bespoke for any colour scheme.” 62-year-old Mike is passionate about the products he displays and believes it’s his personalised service and choice of stock from the impressive walk-in wardrobe at the

The shop at number 16 is dedicated entirely to hire and carries a full range of formal attire for men and boys from tailcoat, dinner and lounge suit and all the accessories to complete the look – not just for a wedding but other occasions too – a gala dinner, a day at Ascot or the school prom. Prices start from just £89 and all garments are available from stock so clients can select their exact clothes in comfort on the premises and know that the quality and fit is superb. “Our most popular hire is still the slate grey tails for grooms,” says

Say ‘yes’ to the dress As the fashion director of one of the biggest bridal stores in the world and the undisputed star of “Say Yes to the Dress” Randy Fenoli has been helping brides find the perfect wedding gown for years and now the wedding guru has returned to his dress designing roots and launched his own bridal collection. The intricate beading, lavish layers of tulle and flattering silhouettes of the collection will later this year be gliding their way to Wedding World in Shrewsbury who will be bringing his sensational gowns to the region. If you want to be amongst the first to try on a Randy Fenoli gown then book yourself an appointment at Wedding World in The Parade Shopping Centre, Shrewsbury during the weekend of 21 – 23 July when the whole 25-piece collection will be in the boutique. This exclusive “sneak peak” event is sure to be very popular so make sure you don’t miss out by getting in touch with the team on 01743 372444.

New wedding venue promises rural heaven Two years after welcoming their first glamping guests, Barnutopia is poised to open as a wedding and event venue. With the first wedding ceremony booked for mid-August this year, the owners are adding the finishing touches to their long barn, a space large enough to host 120 guests in comfort. Set in the rolling green hills of Llansilin near Oswestry, Barnutopia is the perfect rural venue for couples who love the countryside but want more than an empty field for their special day. The wedding barn has power, lighting and a dance floor. The neighbouring Dutch barn provides an excellent indoor/outdoor space if the weather is poor. In addition to the wedding barn, there is residential accommodation in fully furnished yurts, stables, a cabin and a bunkhouse for around 35 guests and space for more guests camping. Guests have permanent access to a small kitchen and the new bathroom block installed in June this year. Apart from its unique wedding barn and comfortable glamping accommodation, Barnutopia is in a truly stunning and idyllic location with gorgeous views in every direction. It is a wedding photographer’s paradise. Visit barnutopia.com to find out more. It’s beautiful

For better or worse?

The cost of a wedding dress is falling The recent wedding of Pippa Middleton reportedly cost £250,000, nearly nine times the average cost of a British wedding, which is £30,000 (according to Brides magazine). With her dress alone - from designer Giles Deacon - costing a reported £40,000. An eye-watering figure to most, but couples intending to tie the knot needn’t fear. Leading high street stores have been busy designing and launching their own brand of wedding wear in what is traditionally one of the most expensive fashion purchases of a woman’s life. While we might all dream of the tailor-made designer wedding gown, evidence suggests brides are pursuing cut-price dresses, with global fashion search engine Lyst’s prediction that the average cost of a bridal gown this year will be £832 – 25% less than last year’s average price tag of £1,112. Monsoon has long been known for selling (more) affordable wedding dresses and other high street retailers seem to have caught on to the trend. Topshop and Dorothy Perkins have become the latest in a growing list of high street stores selling wedding wear at less than half the price of the traditional stores. We’ve scoured the high street to bring you our favourite bridal bargains.

Shropshire woman’s healing hands

Kelly (42) from Newport started her own mobile reflexology business two years ago. Since then she has gone from strength to strength, treating patients throughout Shropshire for a variety of conditions. In her own words Kelly tells us how she became interested in reflexology and how she helps her clients to heal

I work as a reflexologist after completing my internationally recognised Association of Reflexology Accredited Course. My interest in reflexology started after receiving treatment myself and I was amazed at the results and how relaxed my whole body felt during the treatment. It was the start of a love and fascination of what is possible through this wonderful holistic therapy. I researched the background and benefits of reflexology and was so impressed that I wanted to know more and went on to train as a therapist.

The theory is that reflexology helps the body to restore its balance naturally. Usually, after a treatment your tension may be reduced and you might feel relaxed. You might also notice yourself sleeping better and find your mood and sense of well-being improving. You may also find that other aspects improve too; however, this happens on an individual basis.

I can treat patients with a variety of conditions, whatever your needs may be; relaxation, stress relief, relief from mental or physical ailments including arthritis, headaches or migraines, irritable bowel syndrome, back pain and many more, there is a treatment for you as an individual.

Reflexology relieves stress and tension and has a deeply relaxing effect: 75% of disease is estimated to be stress related.

I focus solely on reflexology, as this is where my passion is. As a practitioner, I have seen just how beneficial this amazing treatment is and how much it is enjoyed and I always look forward to meeting my new clients. Reflexology is a therapy which can be received by anyone at any age, from new-born babies to those receiving end of life care, and everyone in between. Reflexology is a very individual treatment which is tailored to you as a whole person, taking into account both physical and non-physical factors that might be affecting your well-being. Some people find it works for them - some don’t. The best way to find out is to try it! 64 | It’s beautiful

As reflexology improves blood circulation, it thus increases the efficiency of all the organs and cells.

In order to function, the body needs energy in the form of oxygen and nutrients which are circulated in the blood. As reflexology improves blood circulation, it thus increases the efficiency of all the organs and cells. It helps release trapped nervous energy and improves neural efficiency; approximately 7000 nerves are stimulated by reflexology massage. It improves waste removal and elimination. It activates the body’s self-healing. With ever increasing levels of stress in everyday life, it is important for people to take more responsibility for their own healthcare needs. Reflexology may be one of the ways to mitigate the stresses of modern life. To find out more about how reflexology can help you, call 07739 135001 or email kjdytor@btinternet.com

Looking good for summer

with Tina Carter

Pilates is a great way to build muscle and the more muscle we have the more calories we burn even when we are sleeping. Muscle starts to decrease as we get older and fat starts to account for more of the weight we carry slowing down the calorie burning. It is so important to keep muscles strong and lean to help us stay at a healthy weight and of course keep our figures in check. Pilates will build and tone those muscles by using our own body weight. Just lifting one leg an inch off the floor takes immense effort from the large thigh muscle and core, this small move will help us build and strengthen the muscles. For best results it is not only important to eat healthy but also combine a little cardio work into your life. You really do not have to build up a sweat to do this and again Pilates is a great practise for this. With small fast moves our heart rate will rise slightly and we will burn more of those calories. With different levels to each exercise we are able to pace ourselves to our own abilities and gently build up our stamina in each class.

Each time we move we are using up calories, so any kind of movement will help with losing weight. Exercise bands are not only an excellent tool for providing resistance but also offer support to joints and muscles,

Exercise bands are not only an excellent tool for providing resistance but also offer support to joints and muscles, this will enable you to feel you can carry on moving in a certain exercise much longer than if we were to just use our own bodies. Each Pilates class is built to provide a good range of moves to help us keep strong and healthy so why not come and give it a go yourself? New Multi-Sport Scholarships Preparation Underway North Shropshire College (NSC) is launching two new multi-sport scholarships this September, the College will be offering a Women’s and Men’s Multisport Scholarship, both based at the Walford Campus with start dates in September 2017. The Women’s Scholarship will include a BTEC Level 3 sport qualification with multi-sport pathways; Rugby, Football and Netball. The programme will be supported by Worcester Valkyries, Wolves FC & Wolves Community Trust and England Netball. The Scholarship will also be championed by double Paralympic Gold Medal winner Danielle Brown, who is the official Ambassador of the Scholarship. The Men’s Scholarship will run similarly with the BTEC Sport qualification, and will feature pathways of Rugby and Football. This will also be supported by Wolves FC & Wolves Community Trust. Both Scholarships have Arla Foods UK supporting with their ‘Good To Grow’ initiative, which will provide valuable interview and business skills built into the qualification package.

‘We went to discuss the exciting enrichment programme which includes TV presenting opportunities, stadium tours, coaching qualifications and opportunities to take part in football camps.” Jo White, Business Development Manager at NSC has been building links with all partners as part of the preparation process for September. On Wednesday 7th June, the College went to Wolverhampton Wanderers to meet staff about the forthcoming scholarships. Jo White commented, ‘We went to discuss the exciting enrichment programme which includes TV presenting opportunities, stadium tours, coaching qualifications and opportunities to take part in football camps both at Wolves and at Walford Campus. Cricket trophy for girls Shrewsbury School’s Under 15s girls returned from the Lady Taverners’ National Indoor Finals at Lord’s with the runners-up trophy after an exciting day of cricket. They qualified for the trip to the home of cricket at Lord’s after winning the county and regional titles. And they returned home to Shropshire with a record of winning two games and losing two tight encounters in the final over, claiming the runners-up trophy by virtue of scoring more runs than their rivals on the day. Coach Gwen Davies said: “The girls have done extremely well to come as far as they have in just a year of cricket at the school. To come runners-up in a national competition is a credit to all their hard work and dedication. “I’m extremely proud of them all and I look forward to watching them progress and develop into the best possible cricketers they can be over the next few years.”

Kiwi study trip for Agriculture students Students from North Shropshire College have spent three weeks on a study tour in New Zealand. The group spent their time at Taratahi Agricultural College, near Masterton in the North Island. The College owns/manages over 50,000 sheep, cattle and deer as well as 2,500 dairy cows. Sian Spear agriculture assessor said: “The study tour was a chance not only to learn a range of farming methods and analyse the difference from the UK farming industry, but to have a once in a life time opportunity to visit a fantastic country.” Students visited sheep, deer, goat and dairy farms, as well as popular tourist areas of the North Island. They got the opportunity to focus on practical skills such as; fencing, chainsaws, butchery and quad biking with the Taratahi College instructors. The group visited Lake Taupo, Rotorua, Wellington and Palmerston North. The trip included watching a New Zealand rugby game and racing at Speedway, those who were 68

Spotlight on

Shrewsbury Flower Show Behind the scenes at the Shrewsbury Flower Show, an 18-strong team of women are helping to put the finishing touches on what promises to be another remarkable event. Charlotte Ruscoe talks to Amanda Jones, chair of the marketing sub-committee to find out more Q. When did you first get involved in the Shrewsbury Flower Show and what made you want to be a part of it? A. I started working for Lanyon Bowdler Solicitors in 2007 and as they were, and still are sponsors of the show, I began to get involved; I enjoyed being part of the event and subsequently was invited to join the committee in 2010.

Q. How much of your time does being involved in the show take up across the year?

A. The show does take up a fair amount of time, not only are there plenty of meetings, I also manage the social media, and whilst I let this tick over most of the year, leading up to and during the show I’m pretty busy on Facebook and Twitter. In the office I have support from Helen Griffiths who ensures adverts are placed correctly and press releases are circulated.

Q. How do all the committee members work together over the year to plan for the show?

Q. Who has been your favourite celebrity guest and why?

A. Tricky one as I don’t always get to meet everyone, but one who does stand out is Tom Kerridge – what a lovely man, he is so genuine.

Q. Can you tell us something that most people wouldn’t know about the show?

A. Shrewsbury Flower Show is recognised by Guinness World Records as the World’s longest running horticultural show. The Show has been held every year in The Quarry since 1875 but stopped during the war years of 1914-1918and 1940-1946. Over the last five years the Shropshire Horticultural Society has donated £130,784.

Q. What does the future hold for the Shrewsbury Flower Show? A. Well, hopefully another 130 years of entertainment!

A. The Society is made up of 55 volunteers who are split across 13 sub-committees, each with their own area to focus on, e.g. the Arena. The sub-committees meet at regular intervals; the chairs of these committees form the executive committee which formulates proposals for the general committee (all 55 members) to make the final decisions on.

Q. How do you recruit members to your committee?

A. Generally people become involved by first volunteering to be a steward at the show, those with an interest in being more involved, or who have some useful skills, are then invited to join the General Committee when opportunities arise.

Q. Who do you think the show appeals to?

A. The main audience are those interested in the floral and craft marquees as well as the food hall which includes our celebrity chef. We offer top grade show jumping which is always popular, as are the massed bands, choirs and of course the fireworks. We see plenty of families – children 15 years and under go free; there really is something for everyone.

Q. How has the show changed over the last few years?

A. We listen to what our visitors have to say and try to take on board what we can. The show now has live music on both Friday and Saturday evening, this year we are pleased to offer quite different performances with The London Community Gospel Choir on Friday and The Overtones on Saturday.

Q. What’s your favourite attraction to enjoy at the show?

A. I love the horses, so the show jumping is at the top of my list – we have been lucky enough to have the Household Cavalry performed in the past, as well as the Royal Horse Artillery and stunt acts such as Knights of the Damned.

What’s on

Shrewsbury Folk Festival The annual Shrewsbury Folk Festival is renowned for its eclectic mix of folk, roots and acoustic music as well as its relaxed and friendly vibe. A regular sell out, it brings the top UK and world musicians – this year there’s Loudon Wainwright III, double Grammy Award winner Sarah Jarosz, The Unthanks and Le Vent Du Nord to name just a few - to the event that takes place at the riverside West Mid Showground. The four-day festival runs from 25-28 August and is firmly fixed in the calendar as the go-to event over the Bank Holiday weekend for folk fans and locals alike. The festival has four main music stages including the two main arenas that seat thousands and the outdoor Village stage. The children’s festival Pandemonium! offers everything from storytelling to crafts, circus skills, lantern making, drama, dance and music workshops for the young festivalgoers from birth to 10. The Refolkus youth programme is always in demand with everything from the Big Band and Super Choir to henna tattooing and all manner of other folk related fun for 11 to 20-year-olds. There is a dedicated dance tent for ceilidhs,

Summer

skincare

with Caroline Wix, Tropic skincare ambassador How often should we apply sunscreen when on holiday? Each product is different, so always remember to check the instructions on the packaging of your sunscreen. The same rules apply whether you’re on holiday or having a BBQ in your back garden! Tropic recommend to re-apply Skin Shade Mineral Sun Protection every two hours, or after each time you go in the water.

Do you have any tips for reducing redness from a long day in the sun?

water infused with mint and fruit handy at all times to ensure I stay hydrated for plump, dewy skin.

My first tip would be to switch to a mineral sunscreen as they are gentle and much less aggravating to sensitive skin than many other sun care products. Also, it’s a classic tip, but you can’t beat aloe vera when it comes to soothing the skin.

What is your handbag essential?

What are your go-to travel companions?

How should we change our skincare routine as we go into summer?

Definitely Tropic’s new 100% mineral sun protection range - it’s a total game changer. The sheer, lightweight coverage of Tinted Skin Shade Facial Sun Protection keeps my complexion glowing and the Skin Shade Mineral Sun Protection is great for the whole family. It feels so reassuring to be protected without the fear of toxic chemicals affecting the environment or my family’s health.

With less moisture in the air than the cooler months, summer is all about hydration, whilst keeping it light. Tropic’s Vitamin Toner Pore Refining Mist is a must-have, with brightening vitamin C and moisturising cucumber and aloe vera juices, the skin soaks up the goodness without that ‘heavy’ feeling. The light mist is wonderfully cooling too - win-win! What else should we do to look after our skin as we age? The main thing is to protect against free radical damage, which accelerates the ageing process, but it’s also important to stay hydrated, inside and out. The Super Greens Nutrient Boost Serum is a holy grail product that’s suitable for all skin types, but its antioxidant rich and nourishing formula is particularly suited to ageing skin. Plus, the lightweight silky oil is perfect for summer too. I also keep a big bottle of

Our Mini Tamanu Healing Balm, hands down. It’s the perfect little helper for days out with the kids, who get all kinds of scrapes, bug bites and stings. It’s so gentle on delicate skin, and helps speed up the healing process of many skin woes. I also keep it handy for when I’m suffering from hayfever - just a dab around the nose catches pollen before it can make me sneeze! I also never leave the house without my Pure Effects Beauty Booster and Correcting Cream Concealer for onthe-go touch ups. How do you ensure your summer glow? I’m a big fan of the Summer Skin Gradual Tanning Lotion all year round - it’s great for topping up my glow. I always use Body Smooth Refreshing Polish the day before I self-tan to ensure even application and smooth, tanned skin. The new Summer Goddess Shimmering Body Oil is also my secret weapon for enhancing a tan. Its glowing golden shimmer gives the most beautiful sun-kissed look.

Last Word Taking remote control of life Working remotely might seem like a remote possibility to most, but for the last four years I’ve been working remotely as a freelance PR consultant from my desktop in Oswestry. Working for and with a variety of businesses in different industries and locations. Distance is no longer a barrier in today’s global village. Employers can pick and choose the skills they need from anywhere in the world. And with recent studies* suggesting 91% of employees would get more done remotely, it seems like a win-win situation. This month I’m pushing remote working to its limit, sat on the other side of the world in Thailand, laptop and iPhone in hand. The sun is shining, it’s 30 degrees outside and I can hear the waves crashing onto the shore. I’m even sipping from a fresh coconut. But it’s business as usual for my clients and while they wouldn’t necessarily expect me to be working while I’m on holiday, I just can’t help myself, remote working is part of my life now, wherever I am. There’s still something very liberating for me about being able to send an email in seconds from the other side of the world. And, unless they read this, most people I’m emailing may never know where I’m contacting them from. I’m willing to bet there are remote workers, working all over our county 82 | It’s beautiful

– from employees who no longer want to commute to freelancers working from home for multiple different businesses.

home from school, which is usually 5pm – 6pm depending on clubs. It’s the craziest part of the day, but vital for bonding with them.

Before I went freelance and became a remote worker, there were lots of days where I would leave early in the morning to rush to work, returning at night hoping to perhaps catch my children before they went to bed. Work was a chore. This might sound familiar to you, something you accept as a fact of life. Your working week is dedicated to work and any hobbies or family commitments have to fit in the ‘gaps’.

After I have put them to bed, I’ll get straight back onto the computer again and use this time to tie up any loose ends and plan for the next day.

I love my work and my life outside of work, and I wanted both. I wanted to work without feeling guilty about leaving my children. Many women after having children are faced with the crippling decision to put their career on hold or take a lower paid job, stunting any further professional development. Remote working as a freelancer was the solution for me to be able to redesign my life during and beyond maternity leave. Unlike a conventional work life, I’m in control of my own hours and the structure of my days. While that can seem liberating, it’s also one of the most challenging things. Monday to Friday I try to schedule meetings first thing, so that I can take the kids to school and go straight to the meeting. Once I’m logged on I’ll work a solid day until the kids return

I might work on weekends, but only at night and never at the expense of family time. That time is precious. Remote working as a freelancer takes trust between client and freelancer and the best way to build that is with regular communication. As technology advances – the opportunities for improved communication grow. High speed broadband, team working software, Skype, social media and traditional email all serve to create an office from office environment. I work as part of many different teams and I fit work into my life in a way that makes sense for me to be happy and productive at the same time. Thankfully the world is changing and the opportunity to work flexibly and remotely is putting the power in our hands to shape our lives the way we’d like to live them. *Forbes.com
