Memorial idea planned for bereaved parents The British Ironwork Centre has offered its help to bereaved parents affected by the Shrewsbury baby ashes scandal. Work is under way on a permanent memorial to the children involved. More than 60 families were denied the ashes of their children after they were cremated at Emstrey Crematorium in Shrewsbury. It is hoped the memorial will be sited in Shrewsbury’s Quarry Park. Clive Knowles, chairman of the British Ironwork Centre said: “We reached out to offer some help with the

Mr Knowles added: “For our part, we understand there’s little any group can do without an idea, and the visual artistry to support their vision. “I hope that we can help by creating a fundraising point, not just at the British Ironworks, but also elsewhere too.”
Martial arts club good deeds Members of MD Warriors children’s martial arts school in Park Hall has taken part in a ‘Good Deeds Challenge’. They have been doing as many good deeds as possible to make as much difference as they can to their friends, families, local communities and also further afield. So far, MD students have made ‘thank you’ cards and written heartfelt messages in them; made bracelets to give away as Christmas gifts (to people they do not know, who may have very little this Christmas); bought a sandwich for someone who is homeless; wrote letters to students in other martial arts clubs in Thailand; helped an elderly person carry their shopping; started a collection for items for Oswestry Christmas Day Open House; made an appeal for people

Challenge yourself for local children Hope House are looking for energetic people to sign up to their sporting fundraising events as part of Team Hope House in 2018. The children’s charity are backing a range of events from half marathons, aquathons and triathlons as well as organising their popular annual Cycle Challenge. First out of the blocks is Chester Half Marathon and Shrewsbury Aquathon on April 29 followed by various other half marathons and the popular Shrewsbury Triathlons. Challenges are subject to registration fees and minimum sponsorship each event entered. In return supporters will receive their free Hope House running vest, fundraising pack and support up to and on the day.
“It was a really fun day, and at the same time, it gave everyone the chance to raise plenty of money for such a deserving cause. To have received the trophy as the top fund raisers was a real honour for all of us here at Tudor Griffiths Group. We entered a team two years ago and the feedback was terrific, so the event is fast becoming a firm favourite with our staff – it’s a good team bonding event and it’s very competitive! “We do our best and it’s the taking part that counts, along with having lots of fun and hopefully not getting a soaking! Supporting Macmillan Cancer Support in Shropshire is a great cause.” Below: Tudor Griffiths with The Richard Bayliss Cup after TG Group raised £2,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support at the World Coracle Championships
If supporters have already registered for these events or wish to register for an event not listed, they can still become part of Team Hope House by committing to raise minimum sponsorship. The annual Hope House Cycle Challenge will take place on Sunday August 5. There will be two routes – a longer and a shorter one (routes being confirmed). Cyclists will be treated to a snack stop at a Half Way Feed Station and a delicious home-made feast of cakes and savouries at the end. Cyclists can register for the early bird price of £25, on the day entry will be available at £35. In the spotlight
Solicitor’s paw patrol Many of us look a bit different over the weekend away from our day jobs, and you could be forgiven for not recognising one Oswestry solicitor during her “downtime” - as she helps train search dogs in the Welsh countryside. Caroline Yorke, associate solicitor in the family law team at Lanyon Bowdler, is a volunteer “dogsbody” with SARDA Wales, the mountain rescue search dog team. So she can often be found burrowed in a bivvi-bag at the top of a mountain pretending to be injured waiting to be found by a search dog - a far cry from her day job in Lanyon Bowdler’s Church Street offices! Caroline has been involved with SARDA (Search And Rescue Dogs Association) for more than 10 years and says she loves the challenge of working with the dogs and playing a part in their role of saving lives. “The association is a fantastic organisation to be involved with and the dogs are great fun - as well as being very clever of course,” she says. “We recently had our preassessment weekend, where the dogs and handlers due to be assessed before Christmas are put through their final paces, any little issues identified and tweaked and a variety of possible terrains covered. “However, the weekend started in a panic as a few days earlier, trainee search dog Ben had decided to branch out on his own, during a walk on Snowdon with his handler’s friend, and went missing. “Thanks to the power of social media little Ben’s story was put out there and in the first six hours after the news 8 | Oswestry life
broke, was shared and liked more than 100,000 times on Facebook! “It was a filthy night of high winds and sideways rain and it’s probably fair to say none of us slept a wink, worrying about him being out on the mountain on his own. “Thankfully, the next morning he was found by the team vet who had gone for an early run on Snowdon and heard Ben whimpering at the outflow of Llyn Glaslyn, partway up the mountain. “With Ben reunited with his handler, we got down to the job in hand of getting Ben and the other dogs ready for their forthcoming assessments. “I was sent to the beach at Dinas Dinlle to act as ‘dogsbody’ for the lowland search dogs, Izzy, Matt and Ben. “A party of us were sent to disperse around the dunes, and I found a lovely spot down near the edge of a beach. I dug down into a drumlin where there was a nice sheltered stretch of sand, and it was dry enough to get my book out with the waves whispering in my ears.
“First to find me was trainee search dog Matt, who struck on my scent from a couple of hundred yards away and gave my ears a thorough lick before returning to his handler to indicate the find and bring him back to me. “Matt loves a good game of tug as his reward and demonstrated his strength by catching me unawares and pulling me along the ground on my stomach by a short piece of rope, oblivious to any sense of decorum! “After dusting myself down I snuggled back into my sleeping bag for a brief rest before search dog Izzy found me. “My final knight in furry armour was trainee search dog Ben who seemed to have put his adventure behind him and was ranging freely across the dunes, locating bodies. “As a lover of the great outdoors, volunteering with SARDA gives me a great excuse to climb in the Welsh mountains as well as being able to do my bit for a really worthwhile organisation.” For more information, visit www.sardawales.org.uk

Time to HIIT the home gym By Charlotte Ruscoe After weeks of gluttony and with my New Year’s Resolution to get fit firmly in place, I asked Joe Clarke and Tyler Morris of JT Personal Training from Oswestry for a quick workout that I can do from home without any equipment to kick start my January fitness quest. “The days of not having enough time for exercise are gone,” says Tyler, “HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) workouts can be done anywhere: at home, in a hotel room, in a park... And most are 30 minutes or less. They don’t require any expensive equipment, just your own body!” This is a training technique in which you give all-out, 100% effort through quick, intense bursts of exercise, followed by short, sometimes active, recovery periods. “This type of training gets and keeps your heart rate up and burns more fat in less time. A high-intensity workout increases the body’s need for oxygen during the effort and creates an oxygen shortage, causing your body to ask for more oxygen during recovery. It’s the reason why intense exercise will help burn more fat and calories than regular aerobic and steady-state workouts,” ends Tyler.

Shoot for the moon this January! Claire Morris, a Slimming World consultant for the Cabin Lane groups, is preparing for a busy January as many people make their New Year’s resolutions to lose weight. Claire says: “No dream is out of reach at Slimming World. Whether it’s to lose ten pounds or ten stone, fit into a size 12 dress or a suit you’ve grown out of, run around with the kids or run a 10k race – together, me and the members of Slimming World can help to get you there! “We never tell members what they should weigh, and so all new members choose their own target weight when they join. However much you’d love to lose, we know how much more motivating it is when you’re aiming for a weight you dream to be rather than a weight you’re told you should be or think is easily achievable – and now we have the research to prove it!”
Charlotte Wildman, from Oswestry, lost nearly three stone to reach her Personal Achievement Target in seven months, after joining the Cabin Lane Slimming World group. She says: “When I walked through the doors at Cabin Lane I really didn’t think that my weight loss dreams could come true. When Claire asked me what I’d love to lose, I never imagined it would be possible. Then, after learning that I would be able to lose weight enjoying normal everyday foods like fruit and vegetables, pasta, rice, potatoes, fish and lean meat, and I could eat as much as I wanted to fill up – without having to give up any of my favourite foods – I didn’t look back! When I set the date for my wedding, I knew I had to make changes to my lifestyle, but also didn’t want to “diet”. I loved going out and socialising so Slimming World fit
Charlotte couldn’t be happier after losing nearly three stone in seven months with Slimming World

“This development is everything we have been waiting for,” comments agency owner Kate Howell, “it’s a real family development. For an independent family-friendly agency like us, these homes are a perfect match for our strengths. “In the catchment area for the popular Whittington Primary School, the homes are bound to attract interest from families with school age children or those looking to escape the town centre for more space and a countryside view, without being too secluded, adds Kate.” To request a brochure or register interest in the site, call Woodhead Oswestry Sales and Lettings on 01691 680044.

RED HOT! The weather outside might be cold, but inside it’s sizzling. Red is hot - and according to Pantone Colour Institute’s Seasonal Colour Trend Report - S/S 18’s runways will be full of fiery reds and chilli hot hues. To quote Pantone “Impulsive Cherry Tomato is a tempestuous orangey red that exudes heat and energy. Demanding attention, this courageous, never to be ignored shade is viscerally alive.” Who wouldn’t want it in their lives?! We have compiled a range of products that fit the bill.

What is ground source heating? Extracting energy from the ground to heat a property is a sustainable use of the Earth’s natural resources and could reduce your fuel bills and carbon emissions. A few metres below the ground, the temperature is constant throughout the year, typically 11°C. This energy can be harnessed to heat your home and water.
GROUND BREAKING HEAT SOURCE AVAILABLE TO ALL HOMES In winter many of us have a niggle that the boiler might not get us through and we become more aware that we need to be thinking about the future of our heating system. As your current system gets older and less efficient, waiting for it to break down before making a distress purchase does not always mean you will make the right replacement choices. Don’t wait for it to break down – look now at how a ground source heating system could be the right choice for you. The Government’s Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) is available with ground source being a very good tariff for domestic and non-domestic properties. Dragon Drilling (Water & Energy) Ltd are experts in their field and not only were they award winners at last year’s Daily Post Business Awards, but they are the largest environmental drilling company in the UK.
START SAVING on your energy bills today!
If the answer is yes to one or more of these questions then call us on 01824 707 777 or visit www.dragondrilling.co.uk to find out how we can solve your water problems and save you money GROUND SOURCE HEATING Heating systems for both commercial and domestic properties. Heat your own property with renewable energy from the ground and ALSO RECEIVE PAYMENTS FROM THE RENEWABLE HEAT INCENTIVE WATER BOREHOLES Be self sufficient and independent of mains water. THIS MEANS NO MORE WATER BILLS! We also maintain & service existing boreholes
Dragon Drilling installs ground source boreholes for many leading renewable heating installers. They drill boreholes from which a ground source heat pump can extract, convert and transfer energy for domestic properties, commercial facilities such as leisure complexes, caravan parks, hotels, and industrial units.
The benefits of a ground source heating systems include: • • • • • • • •

Gardening
Create a winter wonderland Add the wow factor to your winter garden with striking plants that look their best right now. Whether you’d like to fill your borders with hardy shrubs covered with fragrant flowers, clad a fence or archway with colour, or plant a small flowering tree to create a focal point, you’ll find a great range of seasonal stunners in garden centres this month. While a coating of frost or snow creates temporary magical moments, unifying our gardens with its icy frosting, the excitement really starts when it melts away to reveal winter displays full of colour, character and charm. Gold blooms really shine out on gloomy days, so look out for dramatic Witch Hazels that produce clusters of small fragrant flowers with petals like dainty ribbons, transforming the otherwise naked stems of this hardy shrub.

formation of grape-like berries in spring, giving these shrubs their common name of Oregon Grape. In addition to their welcome colour, fragrance is another valuable characteristic of many winter flowering shrubs. For long-lasting displays it’s hard to beat varieties of Viburnum x bodnantense that produce a succession of flowers from October until spring.
Winter brings out the best in many plants. While flowers are an essential part of this seasonal spotlight, many other characteristics provide winter interest too. A wide Evergreen mahonias are equally impressive, with golden range of conifers and evergreen shrubs provide bold forms and fancy foliage. Also look out for plants with sprays of flowers forming at the tip of each shoot. There colourful stems, dainty tassel-like catkins, and are several#3836-Oswestry-148x108-F2-V1-V3-T1-B1-P1-13sept17.pdf varieties to choose from with different sizes 3 wand-like 15/09/2017 11:13 the tactile barks of many ornamental trees. and forms, and flowers on most are followed by the

Education
College in merger deal North Shropshire College (NSC) and Herefordshire and Ludlow College have agreed to seek a merger. The proposed merger will enable students in both communities to benefit from good quality education, availability of a broader range of courses and facilities, and it will secure a sustainable and prosperous future. The merged college will maximise the opportunities of being a major regional educational provider.
Footballer selected for ISFA England squad Oswestry School sixth form pupil and TNS player Ben Clarke has been selected to play for the U18 England Independent Schools Football Association (ISFA) squad. The ISFA is affiliated to The Football Association and is responsible for developing and promoting the game of football in the independent sector. Around 800-900 boys and girls take part in representative trials and events each season giving an opportunity to play at the highest possible level. The amount of football being played in independent schools has increased dramatically over the past 20 years and the ISFA aims to ensure the Corinthian values that the game was

Gillian Richards, chair of governors at NSC, comments, “NSC’s governors are unanimous in the decision to join Herefordshire and Ludlow College. The merged organisation will offer more for all our students, communities, businesses and other key stakeholders. I look forward to the exciting developments ahead.” Both colleges will now work together, with the support of the Government’s Treasury Transaction Unit, towards achieving the merger, aiming to complete in 2018.

Kids fun Baby Bird Café CIC has craft days every Sunday 9.30-11am 23 Cross St, Oswestry, SY11 2NF.
Katie Millard of Baby Bird Café shows us how to make a birdseed ‘pudding’ for your feathered friends and prepare a delicious, seasonal no-bake ginger and cranberry tiffin
Make:
Birdseed ‘pudding’ January sees the RSPB ‘Bird Big Count’ when we’re encouraged to record the birds that visit our gardens. A super little make is a birdseed ‘pudding’ to pop into bird tables to help feed our feathered friends during this cold month.
You’ll need: • 250g lard, cubed • 350g plain flour • Mixed birdseed • Cling film • Cereal bowl • Mixing bowl
Method:
• Bring together the lard and flour in your mixing bowl until you’ve formed a good dough • Add your mixed birdseed and mix well into the dough • Line your cereal bowl with cling film
Bake:
Ginger and cranberry tiffin This is a really simple ‘no bake’ recipe - and easy to make with little ones and is the perfect treat after a chilly winter walk.
You’ll need: • • • • • • •
225g ginger biscuits 150g butter 2 tbsp golden syrup 2 tbsp cocoa powder 75g chopped nuts 100g cranberries 200g dark chocolate
Method:

• Transfer the seeded dough into the cereal bowl and press down firmly • Cover top with cling film and freeze • Turn out, unwrap and place outside on your bird table
• Melt butter and add syrup together and add to your dry mixture • Line a baking tray with baking parchment and press mixture in to fill • Pop into fridge for an hour • Melt dark chocolate – pour over the top of your chilled mixture and refrigerate again (overnight is best) • Cut into squares to serve
Enjoy!
Christmas cheer in Oswestry The town came together to celebrate Christmas at two consecutive events earlier this month. Oswestry Christmas Music Live saw the streets filled with amusement rides, stalls and Christmas cheer. The following day Oswestry Christmas parade rolled into town, entertaining bystanders with festive floats and fancy dress. Organised by the Borderland Rotary Club, the parade raises thousands of pounds for charity. Photographer Graham Mitchell was there to capture the best of the action.

Nostalgia
Down memory lane Historian David Owen takes a walk back in time to discover the fascinating history of two of Oswestry’s best-known streets; Lower Brook Street and Cross Street
lower brook LEFT: Lower Brook Street in the 1800s
Street The Victoria Rooms has dominated the corner of Lower Brook Street and Roft Street since its erection in 1864. Prior to this the site had been occupied by a building which was simply known as The Theatre which existed from the mid-18th century. In 1819 the resident theatre was moved to Willow Street (junction of Welsh Walls) but the old building remained for the use by ‘travelling performers’. The large chimney stack seen on the left-hand side behind the ‘Vic’ belonged to the foundry that was once there.
below: Lower Brook Street now. Image courtesy of Graham Mitchell
The row of cottages that occupy the left-hand side of the street were erected in 1840 and the land behind them in Roft Street (which was previously known as New Church Street) was occupied by a tannery. The cottages were demolished in the latter part of the last century when the area was redeveloped.
cross street Cross Street was, in the early 1800s, an important stopping point for coaches on the Holyhead route. In 1828 no fewer than four coaches stopped at the Cross Keys for a change of horses and refreshments and the inn occupied the entire block including the Barclays Bank (later Martins) building and the old W.H Smiths building on the corner of Leg Street. The Queens Hotel was also a coaching inn but on a much smaller scale. Following the arrival of the railway in the mid-19th century it was extended and became a far more important establishment. Around the 1930s the hotel frontage was converted to shop units and was occupied by the Queens Stores off-licence and the Lexicon Book Company which, of course, became the home of the very first Iceland store in 1970 when Woolworth assistant manager Malcolm (now Sir Malcolm) Walker and a colleague 44 | Oswestry life

Look the best you can! Jane Millington, owner and head practitioner at Body & Face Options clinic in Maesbury Marsh, tells us how she gets her clients to look good naked! Losing weight is a positive step towards gaining the ‘perfect’ body shape, but what happens after the weight loss? Most people are then left with hanging loose skin and relaxed muscle tone - this is because skin and muscle are used to having more volume which has now been reduced. My clients want to look as good naked as they do with their clothes on. That’s why I’ve developed an effective fourJane Millington step solution which can be M.S.B.T.H performed in half-hour time I.F.H.B.C I.H.B.C slots in the clinic. Step one: My Lipo is a nonsurgical liposuction that can be used to ‘melt’ stubborn fat cells that can’t be targeted through exercise. The treatment is painless and works using heated paddles that are used to ‘saponify’ fat.
In a liquid state, the fat is easier to drain from the body. The fat cells then collapse to give a smooth finish. The fat itself will be stored as energy in the adipose tissue, so we recommend a workout within 24 hours. Step two: The next step is an Endermologie treatment. This transports and drains the fat through the lymphatic system. It contours the body and is a vital part of a slimming program. I often have referrals from surgeons who have completed surgical liposuction on a patient who is left with areas of indentation. This smoothing treatment helps to eradicate those indentations. Step three: Pro Max lipo is non-invasive bipolar radio frequency treatment that tightens up loose skin and encourages collagen production. Step four: The final step is the Eurowave, which lifts and tightens muscle. This can be used to target all areas of the body and 18 minutes is equivalent to 369 sit-ups. Each client is given a personalised package to suit their needs. I want my clients to be able to go on holiday and feel confident because they look the best they can. All treatments are subject to an in-depth medical consultation.

It’s Veganuary
There are so many reasons people decide to try vegan... For most, a love of animals is a catalyst. Some people want to feel better about themselves and the impact they make on the world. Others would like to set themselves a challenge, and many combine Veganuary with their New Year’s resolutions and see trying vegan as the healthiest start to the year. Whatever your reason, we’ve got a whole new world of taste and flavour that will leave you feeling fantastic.
Kung Pao Tofu
This is the classic spicy dish from Sichuan in China, Kung Pao Chicken, but a vegan version using tofu instead of chicken. There are many variations to this dish and you can play about with the vegetables and heat it to suit your mood and personal taste. We like it really spicy so go heavy on the chilli but you can leave the chilli out altogether and still have a dish with strong flavours and textures that you’ll return to time and time again.
Ingredients
1 block of tofu 2 tbsp sesame oil 1 large onion, finely chopped ½ tsp red wine vinegar 3 cloves garlic ½ cup water ¼ tsp white pepper 1 tbsp soy sauce 1 tbsp finely chopped fresh ginger 1 tsp brown sugar 1 tsp crushed chilli 1 stalk of lemongrass 48 | Oswestry life
Veg: Red pepper, thinly sliced Okra, sliced in half Broccoli, cut into small florets Asparagus, trimmed and left long Garnish ½ cup of cashews 2 spring onions
Add the brown sugar, crushed chilli, white pepper, soy sauce and red wine vinegar to the water and whisk until it is mixed. Add to the wok with the lemongrass, okra, broccoli, pepper and asparagus and fry on a high heat. Continue frying, stirring constantly, until the veg is soft. Lemongrass imparts a great flavour but is tough, so you may want to remove the stalk prior to serving.
Method
Sprinkle over the chopped, roasted cashews and sliced spring onions and serve with rice or noodles.
Smash up the cashews with a rolling pin or cut finely with a knife and add to a wok. Heat until brown and then remove to a bowl for later. Finely slice the spring onions. This will be your garnish. Add the sesame oil to a large wok and gently fry the onion until soft and then turn up the heat and add the garlic and cubed tofu and toss until the tofu is brown. While frying, take the stalk of lemongrass, cut off the ends and remove the tough outer bark. Smash the remaining lemongrass stalk with a rolling pin to release the aromatic oils and leave whole.
Vegan Gyoza Dumplings
We love Japanese food and gyoza dumplings are a key part of this culinary extravaganza along with homemade sushi, sea vegetable salad and tempura. The dumplings might seem a bit fiddly at first but it’s well worth the effort and after you’ve sussed the first couple you’ll get the hang of it. We tend to make our gyoza wrappers but you can buy them to miss out that step. If
you make them, they keep in the freezer for a month so can be made in advance.
cling film and put them in the fridge whilst you make the filling.
Ingredients
Filling Crumble the tofu with your fingers into a large bowl making sure you don’t have any large chunks. Add the grated carrot, beansprouts, spring onion and ginger and mix well. Then add the sesame oil, tamari and pepper and continue to mix.
Makes 14 dumplings Wrapper 1 cup of plain flour ¼ cup of warm water 1 pinch of salt Filling ½ block of well pressed block tofu 1 carrot, grated ¼ cup of raw, grated ginger ½ cup of beansprouts 4 finely sliced spring onions 1 tsp tamari 1 tsp sesame oil Coarse black pepper to taste
Method
Wrappers Sieve the flour into a bowl, add the salt and gradually add the water a tbsp at a time while stirring continuously. The mixture will gradually start coming together to form a ball of pastry. Once it is a solid ball, not too sticky but not so dry that it falls apart, remove it from the bowl and knead it for 5 minutes. At this stage you can wrap it in cling film and leave it in the fridge for half an hour or so if you’ve got time. Letting your pastry stand in the fridge for a bit will make it easier to use. It will also keep in the fridge, well wrapped, for a couple of days. Roll out the pastry so it is about 2mm thick and use a small round bowl to cut the wrappers out in approx. 13cm circles. The size is up to you but this works well. When you have a pile of wrappers, floured on both sides, wrap them in
Assembly Place a spoonful of mixture in the centre of a wrapper, don’t overfill or it will be hard to roll. Brush the edges of the wrapper with a little water and fold it over lightly pushing the edges together to seal. Draw up the dumpling so it is standing up and pinch the two ends together by pleating them (see pic). Don’t be too concerned if your first one doesn’t look perfect as long as the seams are sealed it will still taste good. Continue until the wrappers or filling run out. Cooking Put a little vegetable, ground nut or sunflower oil in your wok or large frying pan (note: you’ll need a lid) and heat for a minute on a high. Add the gyoza, they may fizz a bit, and flash fry until the underside of the dumplings starts to brown. Then add enough water so that the dumplings are half submerged and cover with the lid. Allow the gyoza to steam until the water has evaporated, remove the lid and continue to cook for a few minutes until the underside is crispy but not burnt (keep an eye on them). Remove from the wok and serve with a small bowl of light soy sauce and some sweet chilli jam. Use chopsticks if you dare. Recipes courtesy of Tofuture.
Cheers to ethical beers Don’t worry about not being able to drink beer if you are trying Veganuary, there are now lots of vegan beers of available and most of them are tastier than “traditional” beers. In case you weren’t aware it has been common practice for some time for many of the Bristish big breweries to use products such as fish swim bladders (Isinglass) to help clarify beer. Isinglass is added after brewing as beer is being casked or prepared for bottling/ canning. Yeast in suspension in the beer sticks to the Isinglass, but also it can attract hop oils and other ingredients, and this leads the beer to lose flavour. After a few weeks the Isinglass finings lose their effectiveness and start to break up - the ensuing murk is full of dead yeast cells and can make you feel really ill if you drink them, hence people avoiding beer from the bottom of the barrel. Conversely live yeast can look a little hazy when in suspension in beer but adds to the flavour and consumed in sensible quantities will not make you ill in the morning! Many modern brewers are now turning away from animal based finings and using non-animal alternatives or in some cases not using anything, through careful use of yeasts and precision brewing. So for vegans look out for British craft breweries such as First Chop, Pig and Porter, Moor, Beavertown, Magic Rock, Marble and Freedom - all of which are fully vegan friendly! German beers made in Germany are all vegan safe too - and the Germans make some of the best lagers in the world! (actually, any beer brewed in Germany is vegan friendly by law), almost all Belgian beer is vegan too. The best resource to check if your favoured tipple is safe for vegans is, without a doubt, www.barnivore.com - it really is the vegan drinks bible. So, embrace Veganuary, there are thousands of amazing vegan beers, wines and spirits out there for you to enjoy!

My husband is gambling our money away. Is this a ground for divorce? Q: My husband is addicted to gambling. I work full
time and have paid money into the joint account throughout our marriage. Since losing his job, the gambling has got worse. He is using the fixed odds gambling machines and is draining our funds. What can I do? Are there grounds for divorce?
A: You almost certainly have grounds for divorce on the basis of your husband’s unreasonable behaviour. If you do pursue a divorce, you will also be able to cite your husband’s unreasonable behaviour within the financial proceedings relating to the divorce.

When deciding how to divide financial assets upon divorce, the Court must consider the factors set out in section 25 MCA 1973. Such factors include disparity in income and earning capacity, the financial needs of the parties, the standard of living enjoyed by the parties, any disability either party suffers with, the age of each party and the duration of the marriage, the contributions made by either party and, importantly in your case, ‘the conduct of each of the parties, if that conduct is such that it would in the opinion of the court be inequitable to disregard it’. In most cases where conduct is raised, it is usually financial misconduct. Depending on the amount of money spent by your husband on his gambling addiction and what other assets there are in the ‘matrimonial pot’, you may be able to persuade the court that you should have a greater share of the assets. In the immediate term you could take steps to prevent him from using your wages by having them placed into a separate account. There is also help available to your husband and he should consider accessing such help via the NHS website at https://www.nhs.uk/Livewell/addiction/Pages/ gamblingaddiction.aspx. You should seek urgent advice from an experienced divorce lawyer without delay. Further information relating to this question is available from Alison Peters, a Partner with GHP Legal. For an appointment visit www.ghplegal.com or contact one of our offices: Oswestry 01691 659194, Chirk 01691 777949, Wrexham 01978 291456, Llangollen 01978 860313. Building bridges thanks to expert team Experts from a family-owned Shropshire firm that specialises in ready mix concrete have found a new use for one of their products – building bridges. The team at TG Concrete – part of the Tudor Griffiths Group – has been working in partnership with Dawnus Construction Limited, and their clients British Rail and Powys County Council, on a programme of bridge construction across the region. General manager Dave Morris said: “We’ve been using our coloured concrete product as part of this initiative, and the results have been absolutely fantastic. “It’s the first time the product has been used in this way, and the innovative process requires us to pour the coloured concrete, let it set, and then contractors remove the outer rubber mould to leave an authenticlooking brick pattern on the surface. “The method has given us a whole host of new ideas of how we could use the coloured concrete and how we can use this experience to benefit other customers in the future.”
No ‘bad penny’ about Grant’s return There is something that Grant Dodsworth can never be accused of and that is being a ‘bad penny’ – certainly not as far as his new employer is concerned. No fewer than FIVE times over a 14 year period he has left award-winning Vauxhall dealer Arthurs of Oswestry and a previous sister operation in Shrewsbury. Now he is back at the Lower Brook Street dealership in Oswestry in the role of assistant sales manager. “Once again for me, it is great to be back,” said Grant, 43, who each time he has left the dealership has moved on to develop and improve his experience in the motor trade. He has returned for the sixth time following two years as head of concierge Mercedes Benz Cheshire Oaks where he says he gained ‘valuable knowledge and experience’ which he now brings back to Arthurs Vauxhall.
Q&A
with Anna Breeze
of Prudent Financial Planning
It’s the New Year and I fancy a change of scenery and upgrade to a bigger house. Friends say I should speak to an independent mortgage adviser? Can’t I just apply to my bank online? Mortgages are obtainable via various routes but going independent has its advantages. An independent mortgage adviser is a qualified and regulated person with access to the whole of the market (i.e. hundreds of diverse lenders with thousands of assorted mortgages). If you decide to go to your own bank or building society, you will be offered their own products. You could use comparison websites, but these carry their own risks because you may be missing out on better deals that may only be available via an independent adviser. An independent adviser will have sat a number of professional exams and are experts in finding the most appropriate mortgage deal to suit your individual circumstances. Buying a house is likely to be one of the largest financial arrangements you ever make so it makes sense to get professional advice. An independent mortgage adviser will not only assess your own individual circumstances (amount of income, employment type, age, size of deposit, credit history etc.), but also look at the type of property you are looking to buy and then trawl the market on your behalf to find the right deal for you. All independent mortgage advisers are regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and have strict rules to adhere to when giving advice with severe penalties if they are found to be giving poor or misleading information. At Prudent Financial Planning our adviser should be able to save you time and money. We would be happy to assess your affordability and borrowing potential. We can arrange for a suitable lender to provide you with an ‘agreement in principle’ to the amount you are able to borrow (subject to status and credit checks). This can help simplify the mortgage process later on and also ensures any offer you make on a property is taken seriously by the vendors. From gym to company HQ An iconic vacant church building in Oswestry is in the process of becoming the headquarters of a thriving IT software and consulting company - which could soon be expanding. The building in Market Gate has been previously run as a gym and is now being refurbished as the headquarters of Bluestonex Consulting Ltd. The company, which helps to create innovative software for large firms, has already moved into its new premises from its previous base at Park Hall. Dan Barton from Bluestonex said: “We have completed phase one of the refurbishment concentrating on the ground floor, now we are moving onto phase two which focusses on the upper floor. The ground floor offices will be leased and the meeting room is available to hire on an hourly basis. “We have three remaining offices to lease out, these are made up of one five-person office, a two to three-person office and a one to two person office. They are available for viewing on the ground floor and finished to a high standard with furniture and all services included in the price.
“The phase two first floor will be open with hot desks and additional meeting rooms by next summer and we plan to start renovation in March ‘18. There are a few things we need to sort out with possible planning applications if we go for some additional window lights. “We are a design and innovation company and this is a great old building with plenty of open space. We believe this could be the new business and innovation center for Oswestry. It is certainly the perfect site for what we do with our software and consulting practices - space, light and a mixture of old and new aesthetics. “It is a great location too, we want to bring people back into Oswestry town centre and employ local people here” To find out more, call Bluestonex on 01691 880222.

HEALTH
Dr Paul Middleton
High Lea House Residential Home
How is your resolve? Having probably eaten and drunk too much over Christmas the idea of a New Year Resolution may occur to many of us. However, it is not easy to change behaviours and most of these resolutions won’t last the month of January. Doctors see behavioural changes in terms of a cycle. Many people don’t even realise the need for change: they are pre-contemplative. They might be in the contemplative phase and wondering, for example, if they should do a bit more exercise, but have not taken it any further. January might see them move into the action phase: they might buy a push bike or join a gym and they’re off on the cycle of change. But keeping going is not easy. It

It takes about six weeks of persistence for us to begin to integrate a different behaviour into our lifestyle takes about six weeks of persistence for us to begin to integrate a different behaviour into our lifestyle. Finally, we get to the relapse part of the cycle where we fail to adopt the change. It is a cycle though so no reason why we can’t try again! It might be losing weight, giving up smoking, doing more exercise or taking up a new hobby. Where are you on the cycle of change? Doctors often try and nudge patients to the next stage but most change does not involve the medical profession: it comes from us as individuals. How can you take the next step? Some useful tips include keeping things simple, changing one habit at a time, start with small steps you see as manageable, plan for at least six weeks ahead, consider writing down a plan and keeping a diary particularly to record your reasons for changing. When your resolve weakens you can use these to reinforce your motivation. We’ll finish with my favourite New Year Resolution quote from an American Baseball player Dave Beard: “Many years ago I resolved never to make a New Year Resolution, and I’ve stuck with it ever since”.

Book review
The industries of the Morda Valley Take the five-mile route between the villages of Morda and Trefonen, and your view both sides of the lane is of unbroken idyllic greenery.
A very different scene would have greeted a traveller on the same journey between the middle of the 18th and the end of the 19th centuries, when an explosion of industrial activity took place there as the Industrial Revolution gathered pace. Unchecked by any regard for safety of workers, let alone the environment, the area had been swamped by an army of mostly second-rate entrepreneurs all bent
on harnessing the power of the River Morda. But as greedy capitalists saw the fortunes to be made from factory building in large centres like Manchester and Birmingham, smaller fry saw the opportunities for setting up in business in very low wage areas like Oswestry where free water power existed. The story of this brief but frenetic period in Oswestry’s history is told in fascinating detail in “The Industries of the Morda Valley”, a book first published in 1939 and just re-issued in a new format as a fund raiser for Hope House. The Industries of the Morda Valley by RD Thomas has been re-released and is available in Lawrences Direct or by emailing samandtibsevans@gmail. com. Every penny of the £5 cover price goes to Hope House.

Left: North end of the mere Top to bottom: Goosanders The boathouse Long-tailed tit Lapwing take flight View down the mere
Rambles with a camera Walker, photographer and artist Graham ‘Grum’ Mitchell is in Colemere this month.
Mere pleasure I doubt if there are many inhabitants of Oswestry who haven’t travelled to Colemere and enjoyed the woodland and hay meadows. However, most people visit in summer. Colemere is three miles south east of Ellesmere and signposted from the A528 and A495. The postcode is SY12 0QW and there is plenty of free parking. It is the only one of the glacial meres to have a full circular walk and it is reasonably level walking, though can be muddy. In my opinion, though, the best time to visit the mere is in winter, especially January. Much as I love the trees, they hide the spectacular view over the mere. Also, it means you can get a better look at the waterfowl, especially the winter visitors. Pick a crisp, still, dry morning to get the best views and reflections and don’t forget your telephoto lenses or binoculars. Take the right-hand side of the mere, across the hay meadow, with views of the boathouse. As you enter the woods, you leave the mere side. Look out for woodpeckers, and all the small woodland birds like the
wood warblers, wrens, robins, blue and long-tailed tits. After a while you can choose to climb to the right and follow the canal for a while, returning at the next bridge. At this point you start to get beautiful “framed” views of the mere and look out for the huge root lattices from fallen trees. As you reach the far end, you get the best views back down the mere. If you are energetic you can continue on to the canal and walk down to Blakemere from here. I usually choose to turn left across the second hay meadow in front of the thatched cottage and make my way back down the west side of the mere. The meadow is a favourite haunt of buzzards. This part of the walk gives you the best reflections and also the best views of the waterfowl. In January you may see Gooseander, Tufted Ducks, Great Crested Grebe, and Cormorants. If you are really lucky you may see a deceit (flock) of Lapwing (Peewits) flying over from neighbouring farmland. Continue on past the boathouse and back to the car park, admiring the new vineyard on the other side of the road. Oswestry life | 61

LAST WORD I’ve reached that age (33 if you must know) where I’ve started caring more about what I eat. Where it’s come from, how much fat, salt, sugar is in it and has it harmed an animal, the environment or anyone else before it’s reached my plate. I’m also vegan and constantly being questioned by ‘concerned’ family and friends about where I find my protein. Which is why when I heard that Oswestry Herbarium on Beatrice Street were providing allergy and vitamin and mineral deficiency testing, I just had to try it out. The test takes around 45 minutes and works by measuring changes in your body’s energy field to detect intolerances to food or substances that you could be sensitive to. It will also show if you are lacking in any important vitamins and minerals. By putting your body in contact with substances where there may be sensitivity, small changes are detected in the body’s energy field by a Vega Testing machine. If changes are detected it may mean you have a sensitivity or intolerance to that food or chemical. In other words, it reads the reaction of your body when it comes into contact with a substance. Completely non-invasive, all I had to do was sit in a chair, hold a probe in one hand and the practitioner held another against my other hand while inserting various vessels of foods and substances that I was being tested for into the Vega machine. As far as I was aware I had no allergies or intolerances, so I was expecting full pass marks in this test. In fact, I told the practitioner as much. She smiled wryly. Val Hurren has been doing this for 15 years and first took an interest in vitamins and minerals in the 1960’s, when she opened the first branch of General Nutrition in Knightsbridge, London. 66

“The body can have an adverse reaction to a specific food and it is the reaction of the immune system to this food which can cause more serious problems,” says Val. “A food allergy symptom is often more immediate after consumption or exposure than a food intolerance, which can develop several hours or even days later. “Symptoms often caused by a food allergy can include diarrhoea, rashes, vomiting, respiratory problems, swelling and stomach aches. “Food intolerances on the other hand can be caused by something as simple as eating too much of a particular group of foods over a period of time. Many people are often unaware that their symptoms are food or environmentally related. They can range from feeling bloated and lethargic as well as skin and joint problems, headaches, weight issues or just feeling under par.” Watching the needle move to the ‘100’ mark meant there was no intolerance, but when the machine detected something, the needle would stutter and stop at a much lower number. The whining noise that the machine made when I was intolerant to something was enough to put me off wanting to touch it again. It turns out the machine is probably a lot cleverer than me. It took seconds
to find out that I have intolerances to 10 different things, from cat hair to cola and white wine to wool. I also found out that I was highly intolerant to tomato and all its derivatives, including ketchup and baked beans. So, 12 months of suffering regular migraines, several trips to the GP, lots of pills to try and stop them and it was down to my pasta sauce all along! That scratchy feeling in my throat whenever I visit a friend with cats now makes perfect sense and being ill after drinking white wine, turns out the hangover from hell wasn’t a hangover at all. It wasn’t that I didn’t have intolerances, I just ignored them and put the effects down to other things like the stresses of life and over-indulgence. It’s not all bad news though, according to Val, I’ve got no vitamin or mineral deficiencies (take that my meat-eating friends and family!) I can also reverse the intolerances by eliminating the group of foods from my diet for a short period of time, and then re-introduce them on a more moderate basis. The test costs £45 and can be booked by calling Oswestry Herbarium 01691 656934.
