Effortless luxury in the Shropshire countryside Myself and wife Alison had the pleasure of visiting the Hawkstone Park Hotel as part of a birthday treat. The established boutique hotel is undergoing a £3 million facelift: the new golf centre is still underway, but the new restaurant and guest rooms are finished, and absolutely stunning. The hotel was built in the 1790s as a house for the Hill family and is set in 400 acres of English Heritage-listed landscape in the north Shropshire countryside. It is also a golf-lover’s dream, thanks to two 18-hole championship courses, while sleek, modern rooms and quality dining will appeal to couples seeking a short break. We enjoyed a three-course meal within the 1792 Bar and Grill offering quality dining, something as inviting to couples as it is to golfing guests. We were greeted by polite and attentive staff, eager to ensure guests were pleased with their service.

We both started with delicious mushroom and thyme soup served with fresh, warm bread. For the main Alison enjoyed an 8oz local sirloin, hand cut chips, BBQ mushrooms, confit cherry tomato and tobacco onions. For myself; a filet of cod, rarebit, caramelised shallots, sweet potato mash, confit tomatoes with a red wine sauce.
We found the stylish restaurant full of a mix of hotel guests. A large golfing party enjoying their evening dinner and couples smiling happily during intimate evenings out.
There were plenty of desserts to choose from: Alison opted for sticky toffee pudding and for me; a vanilla crème brûlée with homemade shortbread biscuit. From the extensive wine list, we enjoyed a bottle of Parini Pinot Grigio.
The menu listed mouth-watering dishes including steaks, duck, lamb, pork and salmon alongside ample vegetarian options.
We stayed in the new superior suite which had everything we could have wished for, including a fully stocked mini bar.

Breakfast consisted of a plentiful buffet-style full English breakfast with tea, coffee and toast. In all a wonderful venue and we look forward to visiting again soon.

Shropshire Oktoberfest returns to Shrewsbury The huge beer tents for Shropshire Oktoberfest are due to return to Shrewsbury’s Quarry Park on October 4 and 5. The award-winning Shropshire Festivals team have organised brewers from the region and beyond to serve up around 150 real ales, plus lager and cider bars, a prosecco parlour, gin den, and wine bar, which can all be mopped up with a vast array of delicious street food. Shropshire Festival’s founder, Beth Heath, comments,
“We are very excited to be bringing back Shropshire Oktoberfest for a third year. We have been thrilled with the support for the event over the last two years, with people flocking to the Quarry for fun with friends, networking with a difference and group outings.” Chris Brooker will compere the festival’s comedy club. He will be joined by Stephen Carlin’s deadpan wit, Keith Carter’s character comedy, Vince Atta and his multi-track looper, and Gordon Southern who headlines following huge success on the international comedy circuit. The music line-up has just been revealed. Acts include The Paprika Blues Band, Custard Connection, The Follicles, Vorsprung Durch Oompah, Dirty Rockin’ Scoundrels and Bouncing Betty - all promising to keep crowds entertained throughout the festival.

Ironbridge Gorge Museums There’s lots happening across the Ironbridge Gorge Museums this autumn. Go along to Enginuity at Coalbrookdale and view the Museum’s attempt at breaking the Guinness World Book of Records for building a model bridge with the longest span from interlocking plastic bricks in partnership with the Institution of Civil Engineers. Marking the 50th anniversary of man’s first walk on the moon, you can enjoy an immersive lunar experience at Enginuity, when artist Luke Jerram’s enormous 7-metre spherical Moon sculpture is installed from 21 October to 10 November. Each centimetre represents 5 kilometres of the moon’s surface. Half-term tile decorating workshops at Jackfield Tile Museum also have a lunar or Halloween theme. Go along midweek between 28 October and 1 November and make your own ceramic masterpiece; perhaps the moon and stars shining in the night sky or the solar system and its planets. Created especially for younger people accompanied by their grownups, Candy and Cobwebs Halloween event for under 8s returns to Blists Hill Victorian Town on 31 October and 1 November, 5pm-7pm.
