I am the proud Principal of this wonderful College that has a supportive and collegial community which aims to nurture the educational, personal, social and cultural growth of its members. Nelson College London is an educational institution of exemplary paradigm in London. At the heart of our College we have; with Attitude you Create right Achievement which we continually endeavour to make part of our ethos. These are the principles that have raised the College’s profile and shaped its growth in the last few years. The stronger the links with home, the better is the communication. We also encourage parents and carers to continue their input into the education of their sons and daughters. We would encourage you to contact us if you think there is something we need to know in order to help them. For students to succeed here I believe they must attend all of their classes, do all of their work to the best of their ability and involve parents and their friends in helping them to succeed. Nelson College London Nelson College London is both a local college and an international college - we welcome students from countries worldwide. Our international students mix easily with our home students and everyone enjoys the facilities we offer. Students’ life at the college is more than studying hard, writing assignments and taking exams. Entry into the UK Students from outside London or the United Kingdom require a visa to enter into the UK and to pursue their Study. Such type of visa is called student visa.

What is a visa? A visa is a certificate that is put into your passport or travel document by an Entry Clearance Officer at a British mission overseas. The visa gives you permission to enter the UK.

Do I need a visa to study in the UK? You will need a visa if you: are not an EEA national

How do I apply for a visa? You can apply in a number of ways, for example, by post, by courier, in person and online. Staff at the visa application centres will tell you about the ways in which you can apply. or visit www.ukvisas.gov.uk You should apply for a student visa in the country of which you are a national or where you legally live.

Before you apply Do you require medical clearance (TB testing)? Applicants for UK visas valid for longer than six months in certain countries now require a certificate to show that they are free from infectious pulmonary tuberculosis (TB). The Government has implemented a programme to screen people applying to enter the UK for more than six months for tuberculosis. The initiative is part of the Government’s Five Year Strategy for Asylum and Immigration. People form the following countries will have to have a TB test: Bangladesh, Ghana (which also takes applications from Burkina Faso, Cote d’Ivoire, Togo and Niger ), Kenya (which also take applications from residents of Eritrea, Somalia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, Uganda (visitor applications) and Tanzania), Pakistan, Sudan, and Thailand (which also takes applications from Cambodia and Laos).

Help with your application (advice from immigration advisers) If you need help with your application or advice about the UK’s Immigration Rules and requirements, you should seek advice from a qualified immigration adviser. In the UK these are immigration advisers regulated by the Office of the Immigration Services Commissioner (OISC – www.oisc.gov.uk). You can also obtain advice from legally qualified professionals regulated by designated professional bodies. Biometric data collection Everyone applying after 30 November 2009, the UK Border Agency has implemented biometric checks for all immigrants travelling to the UK. Without registering your biometric details with UKBA, you cannot apply for an entry clearance to the UK.

Admission Procedure You can download an application form from the college website or collect from the admission office. You will have to submit the application form with the admissions team before the closing date of admissions. The closing dates may differ for different courses based on the number of semesters and semester durations. The admission committee will ensure that. The application meets all the entry requirements of the course applied for i.e. desired minimum education level and any other condition attached to the admission as described by the awarding body. Pursuing a relevant course, that they have strong motivation for, linked to relative experience, May also be eligible for entry irrespective of whether they possess formal academic qualification. Such candidates will be offered a place only if allowed by the awarding body. If the student has the requisite qualifications his/her application will be considered with reference to his/her suitability for the proposed programme of the study. Take into account his/her previous academic record, the confidential reports of his/her referee/acquaintance with his/ her academic work and others supportive material supplied with the application. Applications will be considered in order to ensure that the assessment of application complies with current equal opportunities legislation of the United Kingdom. The student has submitted his/her bank account statement in his/her name covering the time period of last 28 days to confirm the availability of maintenance funds.

Application Guidelines Please read the following guidelines carefully before proceeding to the application. Providing complete and accurate information in the required fields and carefully following the guidelines for admission to the College found therein will result in your application being processed quickly and will allow us to reply to you swiftly with a decision. Your previous qualifications, grades and details of the educational institutions you have attended are all required. Please have this information to hand. Your full employment history may be required for entry onto some courses. Please provide the details of two referees, preferably one from an educational institution you have attended and the other from an employer or ex-employer. Please provide as complete information as possible. Incomplete applications are more likely to be rejected. Please take extra care when you are entering your e-mail address as a valid email account is required for the College to make contact with its applicants. We will almost always communicate with you by e-mail, especially if you are applying from outside the United Kingdom.

Requirements of English Language If English is not your first language we ask you to provide evidence of your ability to understand and express yourself in both written and spoken English to ensure that you will derive full benefit from your studies. You will normally be asked to submit a recent score (not more than two years old) on a recognized international English language test, preferably IELTS or TOEFL Following standards are required for the admission IELTS [academic version] 5 – 6 ESOL – FCE TOEFL – 87 - 109

Admission Criteria for Overseas or International Students: Once you have decided on the course you wish to enrol, now you can apply for the desired course. Only those applications will be considered that have following full checklist attached

A completely filled in application form Two passport size photographs with white background. A copy of all previous credentials. Evidence of English Language Proficiency (e.g. IELTS, TOEFL or other UKBA approved English Language certificate) Personal statement. Completed intention form Details of previous relevant experience with the supporting documents (if applicable). Bank account statement in your name covering a time period of last consecutive 28 days. Your application along with the above checklist will be forwarded to the Admissions Team for evaluation. All of the applications we receive will be considered with due care and attention and we will take into account any information you provide us with. Once your application has arrived with us, we will send an e-mail to acknowledge its receipt. You will be then contacted by member of admission staff to schedule a Skype interview, where your level of English will be assessed along with your educational background and motivation to study. If your application is successful, we will offer you a place on your chosen course. At that stage, you will be expected to accept or decline this offer.

Accepting our Offer To accept an offer and confirm your place, you will be required to pay your full fee in advance. Once your application and registration have been completed, you will be enrolled on to Student Management System (SMS) with UKBA and issue you with your Confirmation of Acceptance of Studies (CAS) Statement. A copy

of this CAS statement will automatically be sent to UKBA online through SMS. Your CAS statement will have the College Sponsor details and your CAS number. You will need this CAS statement to apply for your visa. Note: You do not require the Visa Letters anymore

Accommodation Booking Confirmation The college will present its support to help you arrange an accommodation in London. These accommodations are arranged on bed and breakfast basis in shared livings. Upon the receipt of an accommodation arrangement request the College Admissions team will arrange an accommodation for the students. You will be required to pay two weeks rent in advance and two weeks rent as deposit. Students will be charged with £50 arrangement fee by the College Admissions Team. This payment will be payable to the college along with the tuition fee.

If your application is unsuccessful, the College will discuss your intentions and the options available to you. If you wish to apply for a refund of the fees paid on your behalf, you will be required to put your request in writing and send it over to the Admissions Team along with the original copy of refusal letters, a copy of the page on your passport bearing the stamp of refusal and original copy of your college enrolment documents. A refund will be made to you after deducting the administrative charge of £250.

Payment Confirmation We request that students sending payments from overseas ensure that they include their application number, full name and date of birth details on the back of draft and cheque payments or within the information that accompanies money transfer payments. If the payment was made directly into the college Bank account by someone in the UK, you must confirm the deposit by giving us the following details: Date the payment was made. The value of the payment. The address of the bank from which the deposit was made. The sort code of the bank from which the deposit was made. The payment verification process would be greatly accelerated if you could send a copy of receipt of your payment by fax, email or post. Please remember to inform us of your intentions for the distribution of any payments made to us i.e. if you are including a payment for pre-arranged accommodation. Note: In case of payments done by cheques no documents will be issued until the cheques are converted into cash.

Dispatch of Acceptance Letters All the documents we send are delivered all over the world via Royal Mail’s International Signed for Service or a courier service within 3 – 7 working days of dispatchment of the documents.

Visa Applications Following your visa application interview, you are requested to inform the College of the outcome of your application. If your application is successful, please inform us of this so that we can make the necessary arrangements for your arrival in the UK. Once you have arrived in the UK you will be required to report to the College in order to complete any outstanding procedures and formalities.

the accommodation office. If you have booked airport collection with us, you will be met in the Arrivals Hall at airport. The College representative will hold a sign stating NCL & your name. If there is no-one waiting for you on arrival, don’t panic, just ring us on 07940 651 513 & someone will help you.

We can also arrange to collect you from Heathrow airport at a cost of £60. For collection from other UK airports, please contact

Accommodation We have many properties on our books, ranging from single room accommodation in a shared house from approximately £60 per week to full-board accommodation with a family from approximately £120 per week. For further information please contact

the accommodation office at least four weeks prior to your arrival. A deposit of one month’s rent will usually be required to confirm a definite booking.

Induction During your first week of term we will help you settle into life in Britain, and at the College. Your first week will include: registration at

the College, health services, setting up a bank account, and police registration.

Medical Information The Admissions Team will provide you with a letter addressing to the GP that you can take into the G P or Health centre in your local area and register yourself. You can buy your medicines on prescription

and over the counter from local pharmacies.

Opening a bank account If you are coming to the UK for at least an academic year, it is recommended that you open a bank account. Before opening an account, you should check whether money can be transferred into it from outside of the UK. To open a UK bank account you will need

a letter from the College for the bank confirming that you are a full time student. Our staff will help you with this in your first week.

Police registration If on entering the UK your visa is stamped with the words “Register with UK police on arrival” this must be done shortly after arrival. Admissions Team will help you with this. You will have the opportunity to register with the police during your first week with us. You will need your passport, two passport photographs,

and a sum of money, currently in the region of £34. You will be given further information on registering with the police during the induction programme. The Ilford Police Station is on a walking distance of 2 minutes from the college.

The cost of being a student Whilst in the UK, you will need to budget carefully to cover all of your living costs, which include accommodation, clothes, transport, books, food and entertainment. It is very difficult to estimate how much money you will need over a year as this depends on individual lifestyles & circumstances. Remember, you will spend more money

at the beginning of the course as you may need to buy one off items such as kitchen equipment, books, and special equipment for your course. More information about how to budget for your living expenses will be discussed during your first week of term.

Welfare An advisor will always be available to discuss anything which is of concern to you during your studies, whether it is academic-advise or a discussion of a personal issue. No problem is considered too small
