“THE ONE MILLION” Milestone 1 million trees to celebrate Guru Nanak’s 550th birth-anniversary Our homeland, Punjab, is facing disastrous environmental challenges and EcoSikh has taken several initiatives to make a difference. In September 2018, EcoSikh had launched Guru Nanak 550 Campaign with a global target of planting 1 million trees by planting 550 trees at 1820 spots globally to celebrate 550th Gurpurab of Guru Nanak. In the past 8 months since March 2019, EcoSikh has planted 43 beautiful and thriving forests in Punjab and 13 more in states outside Punjab. Starting from Gill Patti Bathinda, we have now covered Sangrur, Ludhiana, Moga, Fatehgarh Sahib, Ropar, Jalandhar, Mansa, Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur, Faridkot, Samana, Kapurthala, Patiala, Mohali in Punjab and amongst the other states our sacred forests exists in Gujrat, Rajasthan, Haryana, Maharashtra, Jammu & Kashmir and one in Kasur, Pakistan. These forests are created using Miyawaki methodology. The Guru Nanak Sacred Forests hold 60 native species including some rare species like karir, peelhu, tahli, roheda, jhand, malhe beri, lasoora, falsa, arjun, mahua, simmal, kair, sambhalu etc. Additinally, EcoSikh has conducted various Forest Training Workshops in Bhatinda, Ludhiana, Chandigarh and Rajasthan during the past 8 months where several dozen young people were trained in forest making and these workshops were conducted by Shubendhu Sharma, a legendary forest creator in the world. He has been planting hundreds of forests in 13 countries. The purpose of this training was to create a network of environmental leaders from all over Punjab who would plant sacred forests for the betterment of state’s worsening ecology. Today we have a team of 17 expert forest makers to help in making Punjab green and make a livelihood in this profession.

The “JUNGLE MAN” of India Shubhendu Sharma is a passionate, self-driven, and action-focused person. Shubhendu is working

towards changing the framework of urban landscaping and afforestation by influencing two key groups—government and corporations—to adopt methods that optimally use land to increase green cover. An industrial engineer who was working at Toyota in India when he met Japanese forest expert Akira Miyawaki, who’d arrived to plant a forest at the factory, using a methodology he’d developed to make a forest grow ten times faster that normal. Fascinated, Sharma interned with Miyawaki, and grew his first successful forest on a small plot behind a house. Today, his company Afforest promotes a standardized method for seeding dense, fast-growing, native forests in barren lands, using his car-manufacturing acumen to create a system allowing a multilayer forest of 300 trees to grow on an area as small as the parking spaces of six cars — for less than the price of an iPhone. Afforest has helped grow forests at homes, schools and factories. He’s seen improvement in air quality, an increase in biodiversity — and the forests even generate fresh fruit. Afforest is at work on a platform that will offer hardware probes to analyze soil quality — allowing the company to offer step-by-step instructions for anyone who wants to grow a native forest anywhere in the world. Shubhendu hopes in five years to create forests with millions of trees and to increase the number exponentially thereafter. Shubhendu Sharma creates afforestation methods that make it easy to plant maintenance-free, wild and biodiverse forests.

“ORGANIC LANGAR” at Golden Temple World’s Largest Community Kitchen at Golden Temple Will Serve Organic Langar The campaign launched by EcoSikh to promote organic food was successful. A kitchen that feeds 100,000 people daily, 24 hours a day and 7 days a week for free, is ready to raise the bar even further and set a benchmark for others to follow. Guru Ramdas Langar Hall at Sri Harmandir Sahib (popularly known as the Golden Temple) – one of the world’s largest community kitchens, will soon be serving organic food. Grains, fruits and vegetables like carrot, reddish, cauliflower, spinach and fenugreek (popularly known as ‘methi’) are now being grown at farms in Patiala and Gurdwara Gurusar Satlani Sahib near Amritsar, the official said, adding that they have now started receiving supply of 10 quintals of organic produce every 1-2 days which is being used to prepare nourishing vegetarian meals for the pilgrims. While applauding this landmark decision, Dr Rajwant Singh, founder and president of EcoSikh, a non-profit organisation working to raise awareness about environmental issues and inspiring farmers to focus on producing food through organic means, said that they are now hoping that around 25,000-30,000 gurdwaras in Punjab will follow suit to serve organic langar. “We need to respect the natural resources… the gifts given by our creator,” he said. “Just imagine, if all the gurdwaras, temples and mosques switch to organic food in consumption and distribution – the farmers will then see that there’s set market and they can start producing food for which they will not have to use chemicals and pesticides,” said Dr Singh. “Everyone today is aware of how badly chemically-grown food affects their lives and the environment”, Dr Singh told NDTV, adding that a clear message from the precincts of Sri Harmandir Sahib will certainly be an inspiration for all faiths to promote organic farming and take good care of Mother Earth.

Known for his singsong style of telling jokes, this Canadian-Punjabi septuagenarian has quickly become a household name in Punjabi cyberspace. An engineer by qualification, Mr. Chugh moved to Canada in 1981 from Chandigarh, and has become a social media rage with his jokes finding their way from family gatherings to the world wide web and resonating with almost every Punjabi family across the globe. “I’ve become so busy by just telling jokes that I’m busier at 75 than I was during my youth. I’m on a mission to make people laugh because there’s too much stress around us.”

Gurleen Kaur, a melodious singer from Ludhiana, is gripping the audience with her voice. She had training from Shri Gautam Mukherjee, who is the mentor of famous singers of the fame of Kavita Krishnamurthy, Sunidhi Chauhan, Shaan and many others. She also got training in Classical Vocal Music from Pr. Sukhwant Singh and at Ishmeet Singh Music Institute in Ludhiana. She is also trained in western musical skills. In addition to many accomplishments, Gurleen did playback in Pakistani Bollywood movie “Hotal”, music by Wajid Saeed, Producer Khalid Hassan; playback in Punjabi album, SophistaFolk by Intense, Universal Music, Canada; playback with Bollywood Singer Shurti Pathak; playback in a Punjabi album of Inder Singh Randhawa, USA. She has also recorded Punjabi Song “Searchan Da End” for Zimidar Records; Romantic Punjabi Song “Peyaara vale din” for Golden Waves Record and has been a top contestant on various realty TV shows. Gurleen has also done numerous live performance shows internationally.
